USA Cycling Increases License Fees IMO, we pay enough for our
licenses already. From USA Cycling: "Dear Valued Members of USA Cycling, I
wanted to communicate with you to discuss an important matter concerning the
license fees for 2005. We will begin to sell licenses for the 2005 season on
November 1 so we need to let everyone know where we stand and why we were
forced to make these decisions. We always strive to keep down costs to our
members and promoters while providing
as much support as possible to the membership. Further, we will not
compromise our commitment to provide the most comprehensive insurance
coverage for our members. As most of you know, insurance costs are rising
rapidly in every area. Insurance has been a widely discussed topic in the
recent campaign season for all levels of elected office, including the
presidential race. Bottom Line? -- The loss rate for injuries incurred
during the 2004 racing season exceeded our premium by more than 150%
resulting in an increase of approximately $500,000 in our insurance premium.
This increase is caused by a number of issues: - More claims - Higher
medical costs - An increase in the number of riders-members who use USA
Cycling insurance as a primary policy. Our policy is designed to be
secondary coverage.
In order to deal with this escalating issue, we will be taking the following
steps in 2005 to cover the cost of this dramatic increase to our insurance:
1. One-day license price will increase from 5 to 10 dollars. To not do this
would mean that our annual members would be subsidizing our non-members. 2.
The deductible for riders using the USA Cycling policy as primary coverage
will increase from 2000 to 5000 dollars. For members who use this policy as
secondary coverage, the deductible will stay at 1000 dollars. 3. The cost
for a primary license will increase from 50 to 60 dollars. Add-on licenses
will increase from 25 to 30 dollars. Other changes include the International
Licenses increasing to 150 dollars and the junior license will cost 30
dollars. While we regret having to increase our license fees, I hope you
understand that this decision is based solely on the ever rising cost of
insurance. I also hope that with the steps we have taken regarding one day
licenses and non-insured riders we can get this issue under better control.
The insurance provided by USA Cycling has never been intended to provide
primary coverage. We have been proactive in addressing this issue as well.
We are working with an insurance company to offer competitively priced
insurance that can be purchased by riders to protect them from experiencing
excessive personal costs and to help cover the majority of the deductible
under our policy. We hope
to be rolling out this new program in the near future. I appreciate your
understanding in this matter and commit to you that we will continue our
efforts to manage this in the best interests of our members. I hope to see
you all racing in 2005! Sincerely, Gerard Bisceglia, CEO USA Cycling, Inc."
Peter Wicker (L5 Flyers/Owner of Outback Bikes) forgets to unclip from his pedals before the first barrier at Sunday's Macon Cyclcoross race. Ride what you dig!
Macon Cross The Macon cyclocross race was fantastic! Rob DeRose and crew put on a great race with a fantastic course. It was a little bit of everything a cross race should--dirt road, pavement, grass as well as a barrier section, a running beach section, and the now infamous "Cereal Bowl Hill." My photos are up.
GAP Finale Thanks to Ed (Bicycle Outfitters Racing) for the feeds and for fixing a misadjusted rear derailluer 10 minutes before my start! The results for the GAP Finale are up. The temperatures were hot, but the competition was hotter.
11-2-2004 Airport Ride The Airport ride will begin Nov. 7 with a benefit for Drew Johnston, a local triathlete, who was recently diagnosed with chronic myelogenic leukemia. Details at www.tourdelife.org. The regular Airport ride will start on Nov. 14. Maps and a cue sheet are here.
Tony Serrano Memorial Ride The Tony Serrano Memorial Ride was held on October 31 at the Cycleworks in Duluth. Approximately 200 cyclists attended. Tony's widow spoke before the ride and told everyone how appreciate her family was for the support during this difficult time.

Jittery Joes Line Up From
Pez
Cyclingnews: "After signing a co-sponsor for the coming year, Kalahari
Red Tea, Jittery Joe’s looked set to make some announcements, and that they
did. After losing climbing senation and Lance-beater, Cesar Grajales to the
Navigators Insurance Team as well as standout Chad Hartley to TIAA-CREF, a
new addition, or perhaps a few had to be made. The monetary injection from
Kalahari allows now for a roster of 11, of which four are returning from
last year, Evan Elken, Jonny Sundt, Jeff Hopkins, and Jesse Lawler. There
are to be 7 new additions, of which two are official.
Returning to America from a stint on the Div I outfit, Saunier-Duval, Tim
Johnson will head the Jittery Joe’s/Kalahari team next year. Johnson will
definitely provide stage race power as a rider with experience, climbing
prowess, as well as good TT skills. Young gun, Thad Dulin will move from
Colavita on over to Jittery Joe’s/Kalahari as well, and looks set to make a
major impression in 2005. Five other riders are currently in the process of
signing, look for a finalized roster soon."

White/Bud Beware! This is an email I received from a friend of mine. This is the second or third report of tacks being tossed into the road on the White/Bud Plant route. Please be alert when riding up there! "On Sunday morning 10/31 while riding the 45 mile loop out of the Bud plant my group and two others discovered more tacks had been scattered on the road. This was in the same location as before, Spring Place Rd. starting about 1/2 mile before the church on Folsom Glade Rd.( about where the road used to be marked "Danger! Bad dog!". We had 2 flats, then started seeing the tacks. Someone is really going through a lot of effort to damage bike tires as we picked up handfuls of tacks in 4 spots over about 1/2 mile that had been carefully painted gray on both sides to match the color of the road surface. A lot of the direction markings have been painted over also. I would suggest anyone riding through that area make sure to have some patches and extra co-2 cartridges. I hope this will not continue, but it seems as the person or persons doing this are quite obsessed with disrupting our enjoyment of this ride."

GAP Finale Photos Michael McGee of the L5Fylers took almost 200 photos at the GAP Finale at Dauset last Sunday. They can be seen here. He got photos of most of the races.
11-8-2004 Monroe CX Everyone had a good time at the Monroe CX race on Saturday despite a slightly non-CX course with 5 dismounts/run-ups. I got some great shots! Click here to see the photos. I've been asked why I haven't taken any photos of the B race. The reason is simple! I'm racing during that time. More photos: Michael McGee (L5Flyers), Adam Jones (@ the Hub). My personal thanks got to Scott Hodge, coowner of Addictive Cycles in Braselton, for all of his help and support this weekend!
Bob Kuhn (GTC) and Dub Smith (NARC) fought to the very end in the Master 30+ race. Bob won the sprint finish.
GAP Tumbling Creek A large crowd came to the Tumbling Creek Mountain Bike Rumble at Gainesville College on Sunday. Perfect racing weather, sunny and 70 degrees, greeted riders. I could not get over the 50+ riders in several of the Beginner Men's categories. Hopefully, these riders will stick with it and fill the smaller Sport and Expert categories over the next several years. The venerable Bruce Dickson provided color commentary for all of the races.

Jittery Joes News Maxxis Rider Kabush to join the Bean Team for key
races
November 9, 2004
Athens, GA—The Jittery Joe’s-Kalahari Team announced today the signing of
Maxxis mountain biker Geoff Kabush to their roster for the 2005 season. The
recently crowned Canadian National Cyclocross Champion will still race
primarily for the Maxxis mountain bike team but will take to the asphalt for
some key road races with The Bean Team.
“I am really excited to get to do some racing with the Jittery
Joe’s-Kalahari guys next season,” said Geoff the day after his win at
Canadian Cyclocross Nationals, “They are giving me the chance to participate
in some big races like Dodge Tour de Georgia and USPRO Championships that I
have been wanting to race for years.”
“The Jittery Joe’s-Kalahari team has been riding Maxxis tires since they
first started making them five years ago,” says Micah Rice, team director.
“Adding some of their riders like Geoff strengthens our relationship with
Maxxis while adding strength to our team for the big stage races.”
Geoff Kabush races for Team Maxxis on the mountain bike and on the
cyclocross bike. He is the Canadian cyclocross national champion and was
part of the gold medal relay team at the Mountain Bike World Championships
this past year. He also won numerous NORBA National events on his way to
becoming the 2004 NORBA National overall champion.

George is a Daddy! From Hincapie Sportswear: "Please join me, and
everyone at Hincapie Sportswear, in congratulating George and Melanie on the
birth of their beautiful new baby girl, Julia
Paris Hincapie. The following announcement is posted on GeorgeHincapie.com
and on the HincapieSports.com BLOG page.

George & Melanie: Proud Parents of Baby Girl
America's premier Classics rider and 8-times Tour de France veteran George
Hincapie has a new accolade to add to his palmares - dad. Melanie gave birth
to the couple's first child, a baby girl named Julia Paris Hincapie. The
baby, weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces and 20.5 inches long, was born in
a Greenville, South Carolina, hospital Wednesday at 5:04 PM. Mother and
daughter were said to be doing fine. George met Melanie, a native of the
eastern French city of Dijon, during the 2003 Tour de France where she
was one of the models accompanying the race entourage. "I was mesmerized by
her," Hincapie said. "When I first saw her I thought, 'Wow, she's
beautiful!' and I wanted to ask her out on a date to have this beautiful
girl with me. But that was it; I didn't think it would go anywhere." Now,
nearly a year and a half later the two are the proud parents of a beautiful
little girl. Along with being a new dad at 31, Hincapie is entering the
period of his career where many male riders find their peak. He recently
signed a contract calling for him to ride with Lance Armstrong's new
Discovery Channel-sponsored team through 2007. And it's quite possible that
he'll compete in the Beijing Olympics in 2008, in what would be his fifth
Olympiad."

WBL Update From the WBL Board: " NOV. 7, 2004: GUTCHECK'S
GLORIOUS DAY! In the first event of the Official Unofficial WBL 2005, Jered
Gutcheck Gruber scored an resounding W (and that don't stand for George) by
getting dropped before the Attack Zone even began. Gruber and Junior battled
neck and neck for the last place honors with both apostles of the flesh riding
slower than two snails that have overdosed on fried turkey and Xanax. The first
event of the unofficial other season came in on the new and improved Jefferson
Riviera Road and gave the zealots a preview of the brand spanking new J. Riveria
Hump (no longer designated a "wall"). Many planned to be dropped on the former
wall and battle it out in a slow motion glide to the line. But, Junior and
Gutcheck pulled the rug out from under them as both riders fell off the pace,
which was a blistering 13.4 mph, while still cruising out Nowhere Road. After
the event - long after the event actually - when both riders finally arrived at
the press conference, Gutcheck smiled a $3 dollar grin befitting a whino just
uncorking a fresh bottle of ripple. Junior, who was just happy to be finishing
an event, much less podium, found himself grinning like a $4 dollar prostitute
who had been given a $5 spot...and didn't have change.
This weekend's event will again, as always, start at Sunshine Cycles at 10a.m.
on Saturday morning. This is an unofficial event, although it is sanctioned by
The WBL. 2 - 2.5 hours. Reminder: The First Official WBL event will take
place on Saturday, December 4, 2004 and will be THE DREWDINI CLASSIC! BEWARE!!
And also remember: No sprinting til January. Lord have mercy."

Gwinnett County Parks Info. From the Gwinnett County Parks Dept. "Good morning, I wanted to make sure that there was a clarification concerning the notes posted below regarding Gwinnett County Parks. At this time: 1. The Harbins property is closed to the public, please do not utilize the trails there as police are patrolling and citing for trespassing. As many of you know, there was a public meeting and a committee for this park is going to be established to determine usage and amenities.
2. The Mulberry property does not allow any bikes on its trails except for
the paved trail that runs the circumference of the meadows. Please do not
bike on the non-paved trails as police will cite you for it.
There are no plans at this time for bike trails to be installed at that
park.
3. Yellow River is under construction with limited accessibility. Upon the
completion of that parks construction, I would like to site down with reps
from SORBA concerning potential trail maintenance projects or schedules.
Until the park is further along though I feel it unnecessary to set up a
plan for the park. I expect the park to be completed sometime next year (
hopefully by summer).
4. Tribble Mill Park has a meeting scheduled with representatives for SORBA
at this time. I hope to identify a course of action regarding this park and
implement a plan to "fix" many of the issues we see out
there. We have also seen a new "free ride" trail developed at that park.
This was done without permission and will be dismantled this winter. Trail
construction in any of our parks is strictly prohibited
without GCPR authorization. Park Police have cited several individuals found
there. Please if you see anyone out in the parks building trails, feel free
to report it to us. There is a hope to develop safe trails that can be
maintained but this can only be done with cooperation from everyone.
As there is always a lot of questions and "rumors" about Gwinnett County
Parks, please feel free to direct questions to my office at the contacts
below. If we are unable to answer the questions for you, we
can direct you to someone who can I also would be more than happy to come
out to a meeting if ever needed to answer questions and give you updates (
time permitting). There are many exciting ideas we have towards the future
and I hope to establish a long term relationship of help and trust with all
of our
users. Mark A. Patterson Ph.D. Environmental Program Supervisor/Museum

Cross Photos Michael McGee (L5 Flyers) took another great batch of photos at the cross race at Dauset this weekend.
Dauset Cross The Bicycles Unlimited/Georgia Velo crew put on a great cyclocross race on Sunday at Dauset. Rain Thursday and Friday left the back side of the course very muddy and slow. The rest of the course was fast, and 3 well placed barrier sections left crossers happy. My race was not so great. I've been sick since early last week and still am. I showed up, I raced, I got points, my shin hit the barrier, I got some bruises. I've posted a few select photos here and all of them on Snapfish.
What happens to Trish's shin when they hit the barriers. Bruises, blood, and scrapes! Oh My!

WBL News From The Board: "Sat. 13 Nov.: The 3 Amigos Fluff Their
Tailfeathers! In what will surely go down as the slowest 35 mile ride ever
done, the 3 Amigos have crossed the line both last and together, thus
securing themselves their only win of the year. Yes, Junior the Punk,
MarKy-MarK Anderson and Horrible Hagner took over 5 hours to complete the
35-mile affair, while the remainder of the pack arrived at the finis in less
than half that time. An hour into the slow-motion affair, the three
pretenders were already two hours off the pace, and falling fast. "We knew
they were slow," the Lady's Man George Selgin commented. "We just didn't
know how slow." The pace, which at times quickened to 15.6 mph, was
apparently just too hot for the three love birds to handle. When asked why
the short distance trek had taken the triad so long, MarKy-Mark sang like a
songbird: "We love each other. We were preening each other's tailfeathers."
The three were then unceremoniuosly booted out of The WBL on a permanent
basis, no questions asked. Update: The WBL website should be up and running
shortly.
Ride: Saturday, Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. Depart from Sunshine in downtown Athens.
2.5 hours or thereabouts. Whereabouts? There, Be! (Unofficial event.) There
will be no preening of feathers allowed!
And don't forget: DREWDINI's SPECIAL: the first official event: Dec. 4, 04
at 10 a.m.
Be there!"
This Weekend This weekend is the State Cyclocross Championships at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta. Come on out and cheer--rain or shine! The course is being run backwards from last year. Waaah! I liked the long downhill!

Garrett Wonders Memorial Fund For those of you that may have known
Garrett, he was a rider on the SouthPark Cycles sponsored Carolina VW Team.
He was an excellent
cyclist and individual who was killed by a motorist while training for the
US Olympic Cycling Trials which were held in June. His wife Teri and close
friends have started the Garrett Wonders Memorial Fund - Share the Road
Campaign. We currently have magnetic Yellow Ribbons in his honor. The
magnetic ribbons are $5 and all proceeds go to the fund. The proceeds from
the fund will go to provide two annual scholarships for talented cyclists
attending Ohio State University (Garrett graduated
with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics, magna cum laude and a
Masters in Nuclear Engineering from OSU) and funding advocacy projects in
safety education, signage, zoning and legislation. For more info either stop
by the shop or check out

Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving I will be taking time off later this weekend for some non-cycling time (horseback riding!). SE Cycling will not be updated over the Thanksgiving holiday unless I get *really* bored. Take this time to be thankful for what you have. I'm thankful for:
My bikes, my horses, a job, my terrific friends, my great teammates, my family, and that I live in the best country in the world...the USA!
Thanks Boneshakers! As always, I am also thankful for my sponsors for helping to keep me and my bikes going for another year. This year Randy, Hamlet, and Charlie at Boneshaker Bicycles have helped me immensely. I look forward to riding for Boneshakers again in 2005!
Cyclocross State Championships Daryl Sawyer (Nalley/Roswell Velo) and crew put on a fantastic Cyclocross race on Sunday at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta. Thanksgiving Ride From the Webb Bridge ride folks: "Join Van Purser and
Barbara Gillman for a special Thanksgiving Day edition of the Saturday Ride.
Enjoy a little more sleep and a calmer pace while still being home in time for
your Thanksgiving Feast. The route will go out the same as the Yellow Creek
route but will turn right on Hwy 369 then come back via Heardsville Road. Expect
a moderate pace as this will be a combined ride instead of having 2. What: 45
+/- miles of fun in Fulton, Forsyth, and Cherokee County. When: Arrive at
parking lot by 8:45 for departure promptly at 9:00. Where: Meet in the parking
lot on the Northeast Corner of Webb Bridge Road and Northpoint Parkway.
Remember, the more calories you burn, the more you can eat when you get home!
(Trish's Note: This is not a casual ride. Expect a pace of 20+ mph.)

Tour De Georgia News 2005 Season Preview Served Up in Georgia
A hardy serving of cycling was the main course at a 2005 season preview
panel luncheon hosted by the Georgia Partnership for Economic Development
last Friday.
Moderated by renowned race announcer and cycling commentator Dave Towle, the
panel featured Jeff Corbett, director of HealthNet, presented by Maxxis;
Micah Rice, director of Jittery Joe's-Kalahari; and Nathan O'Neill,
five-time Australian time trial champion, who will ride with Navigators
Insurance in 2005.
The discussion began with tales of the 2004 Dodge Tour de Georgia, easily
North America's premier professional cycling event that featured 15
international teams and the legendary, eye-opening Brasstown Bald climb.
Race officials indicated that the 2005 route will be unveiled in early
January 2005.
Rice, whose Athens, Georgia, based team took the win atop the highest point
in Georgia, said the Brasstown Bald win was the biggest ever in Jittery
Joes' history, adding that its coffee sales spiked in the weeks following
the race.
Quickly the panel zeroed in on the level of competition and fortitude in the
American cycling scene. O'Neill, a recent Georgia transplant and a
continental racing veteran, commented that "racing in America superseded
what I expected. Chris Horner going to Europe is good for the American
riders' reputations."
Towle agreed, noting that in recent years American racing has produced a
number of general classification contenders who have made names for
themselves in Europe, among them Lance Armstrong, Bobby Julich, Chris
Horner, Tom Danielson and Levi Leipheimer. Corbett added that speed is
another growing aspect of American racing.
The panel concluded with door prizes, including a training ride with
O'Neill. Dodge Tour de Georgia race officials anticipate hosting similar
panel discussions in the future. (Thanks to Jennifer Vincenzo.)

11-28-2004 Wanna Help? Southeastern Cycling has been taking up more and more of my time this year. I've decided to rearrange some priorities in my life, and there are some cycling things that are going to have to be scaled back or go completely. This *MAY* include SE Cycling unless I get some help. Is there anyone out there that would like to coordinate road, track, or mountain bike coverage? This includes race dates, race reports, and photos. You should be able to send me updates 2-3 days per week and be somewhat timely with reports and photos (within a few days of the event).
I've *NEVER* had anyone respond to requests for help other than a few people (thanks, the 2-3 of you know who you are! They belong to the clubs whose news you often see here) despite the thousands that read this site weekly. If I don't get some help, SE Cycling may have to go or be scaled back extensively. It is simply taking up too much of my time that needs to be devoted to other things. Any takers? OR is there anyone out there that would like to completely take it over?
