August 2005
8-2-2005 Women's Race Clinic Don't forget the Velo Bella women's race clinic this Sunday at Cartecay Bikes.
ORAMM The Off Road Assault on Mt. Mitchell was held this past weekend. Namrita K. has a great report on her website. The route covered 66 miles and about 11,000 feet of climbing.
CX Nationals Yeah Baby! The Cyclocross National Championships are coming back to the East Coast--Providence, Rhode Island. They will be held Dec. 9-11. Mark your calendars now!
Marietta Crit There have been some complaints from the West Oak Business Park offices the last few weeks. Coming down the "finish" down the hill, stay to the RIGHT of the double yellow line until the corner. The majority of complaints seem to be coming from the offices right there near the corner. The big bushes that are near their driveway block their view coming out of the parking lot. It is dangerous for those riding and for the motorists if riders don't stay to the RIGHT of the yellow line. Also, be nice to walkers, joggers, spectators, office park "residents," etc. It is by the grace of the business park management that we are still there. Since it is private property, they can ask the ridres to leave. So please be courteous!

8-5-2005 Carrolton
Greenbelt Funding From the Carollton Cycling News: CARROLLTON GREENBELT
PROJECT FUNDING The multitude of extensions are finally over and the
Transportation Bill passed with the Carrollton Greenbelt Project on it! Thanks
to your emails, phone calls, letters and postcards, we were able to place and
keep our community project in the High Priority Project Funding list. We were
granted $280,000.00 over the next 5 years to jump start our 14 mile pathway. For
those of you unfamiliar with the Carrollton Greenbelt Project, please stop in at
Perpetual Motion Bicycles, Inc. and see the map of the proposed route.
In addition to your hard work, we owe a great deal of Thanks to our friends in
DC, Representative Phil Gingrey and his transportation staffer Jim Irwin took
the bull by the horns and submitted our project to the House committee. Then
Representative Lynn Westmoreland and his staffer Joe Lillis sat on the House
Transportation Planning Committee and fully backed the Carrollton Greenbelt
Project. Next, on the Senate Side, Senator Johnny Isakson and his transportation
guy Mike Quiello sat in the joint conference committee and protected the funding
the House initially submitted. And finally, Senator Saxby Chambliss and his
staffers Monty Philpot and Tyler Thompson were the first to congratulate us on
making the budget! Remember these friends of the bicyclist the next time you
vote.

8-8-2005 Lance is Coming to Atlanta From the GA Cancer Coalition: The GA Cancer Coalition has announced that Lance Armstrong is coming to Atlanta on Oct. 5, 2005, as part of his Cross-Country Tour of Hope. Festivities begin at Centennial Olympic Park at 11 a.m. Lance is scheduled to ride in at 12:44 p.m.
8-9-2005 GAP Arrowhead
Race Info. From SORBA-OMBA: Here are some changes that you will see at
Arrowhead for the next GAP
race.
1. Registration Please either print the form and mail it or go to the
sorbaomba.org website and click on the Arrowhead race in the events block. I
have setup registration on Active.com. DO NOT USE GOBIKE1.COM.
2. Consideration was given to changing the start schedule but the poll results
influenced our decision to keep everything the same since most people are
comfortable and familiar with the current start times.
3. Timing and Scoring (Trish's note: WOO HOO! David and Terri are among the best
promoters, scorers, and timers in the mtb racing industry.)
David and Terri Berger (Gone Riding/SERC) will be responsible for the Timing and
Scoring. We have listened to comments on this forum and are taking action. If
you like this idea then support us by participating in our race.
4. No T-shirts. T-shirts will be sold at the event in case anybody would like to
buy one. We decided to get away from the standard T-shirt thing and do pint
glasses instead. The pint glasses will have the SORBA logo on one side and the
OMBA logo on the other. Extras will also be available for purchase. This was a
big decision so give us your feedback. OMBA will host a major work party the
Sunday prior to the race. The majority of the course will be marked at that
time. If you still need Pay Dirt points, come on down to get a sneak preview and
help us out.
So anybody pre-riding the week of the race will know the route.
This route is not the same as the SERC race in June. This race will not cross
the main road. The course will be contained on one side of the park. The start
will still be in the playground area but will turn right on the gravel and
continue past the Dining Hall Pavilion, up the grass hill, up the paved hill,
left at the top by the restroom then down the paved road to the trailhead. The
paved road will be closed during the race but please be careful on your pre-ride
and look for cars before you let it loose.
The other difference is the new section will be included in this race. The
course is 5.2 miles with 640 feet of climbing.
Dreaming of Cross Thinking of cyclocross already? I am! I talked with one of the series organizers this weekend. He said they are busy working on the schedule and rule changes for 2005. I can't wait! Only about 2 more months til cross season starts! Keep an eye here and on the Georgia Cross Series website for updates.
But Trish! But Trish! You haven't written much lately, and where are the photos?. Daily updates to Southeastern Cycling seem a bit sporadic lately. I know...I know! I have been VERY busy this summer! Work--bah! Alas, my full time job pays the bills, not cycling. I've been working too many hours although I admit a few of the projects are pretty exciting. Between work, the house, and my own training and riding, the website has to take a back seat occasionally. Hopefully, things will settle down in a few weeks, and I can get the updates back to normal. If you have news, a story, photos, or just want to say hi, drop me an email at sttarlite at hotmail dot com.
8-10-2005 TransRockies The TransRockies is a 7 day mtb stage race in Canada. Former Atlantan Karen Masson is riding on the Cane Creek Women's Open team along with Trish Stevenson. They are doing quite well! You can follow their progress on cyclingnews.com.
Crit News This is regarding the Marietta Crit: "To all participants of
the weekly training crit at West Oak Business Park:
Please see the
attached PDF file. The PDF has an email attached to it from
the legal council of one of the tenants at West Oak voicing their concern for
the riders' and tenants' safety. Also, please forward this email to anybody that
you know that also attends the Tuesday night training crit. ecause we lack the
ability to stay in the right hand during the Tuesday night crit it seems that we
may lose our privilege (it is not a right!) of using the West Oak business park
as an organized training venue if our inability to stay in the right hand land
continues. The West Oak Property Managers may have to take more extreme measures
when it comes to protecting the tenants that work at the park as well as the
riders who participate in the weekly training crit from a serious accident. For
example, disbanding the organized ride [which they do not want to have to do!]
or Tuesday Night Crit Participants may have to pay to ride in order to pay for
police officers to marshal the corners. Common sense would tell us all that we
would not want to see this happen just because we cannot stay on the right hand
side of the double yellow line; which is easily doable with the
wide roads at West Oak.
Let us work together to keep on one of the oldest and best rides in Atlanta
alive and free of unnecessary fees! If anyone has 5-10 traffic cones please
bring them, it would be greatly appreciated. We will use them to remind riders
to stay in on the right hand side of the double yellow line.
Thank you for your help, John Allison"
24 HOA Date Change The 24 Hours of Adrenalin at the Georgia International Horse Park has been changed to Oct. 8-9. No explanation from the promoter was given.

Dauset Trails News From Dauset Trails: "We have had heavy rains just like everyone else. Our trails are slowly drying out but we have lots of damage. Some sections will be closed indefinitely. There were three creek crossings over Long Branch creek. One we refer to as the "3-Pole" bridge. It is constructed of three power poles as the base. This bridge washed 60+ yards through the woods. I don't know when it will be replaced. The other crossing was what we call the "Foot Bridge". It washed away as well. The high water cut the bank and we now don't have a span short enough to replace that bridge. We still have one crossing that is safe and still intact. We will repair/replace these crossings asap. In the mean time, be patient with us and please remember that we close the trails when they're wet." Trish's note: Remember to call their hotline at 770-755-6798 to get the trail status.

8-18-2005 Ride with
Jittery Joe's-Kalahari The Jittery Joe's-Kalahari team has announced that it
will be offering rides in its Mini Cooper team car during the Barclay Investors
San Francisco Grand Prix on September 4. The idea is a way of raising money for
the team, according to manager Micah Rice: "We have always been a team funded by
our fans with the sale of Jittery Joe's coffee and Kalahari FruitTrekkers. This
is taking this idea one step further and allowing our fans to see this race from
the perspective of the riders themselves, without having to ride up Fillmore
Street!"
The team will be 'selling' a total of six laps in the back seat of the orange
Hank Aaron Automotive Mini convertible. Each lap is a $500 donation to the team
and includes a can of Jittery Joe's Morning Ride coffee, a box of FruitTrekker
bars, and a team t-shirt. Those interested should email the team at
mail@thebeanteam.com.

8-19-2005 TdG News
Sorry, I don't know where the original source for this is. It is by Maria
Saporta. "Bicycle race to shift gears for 2006 Change is afoot for the
Tour de Georgia, the premier competitive cycling event in the United States. The
2006 event will have a new title sponsor, and it will have a new organization
putting on the six-day race. Dodge has decided not to renew its $1 million title
sponsorship of the Tour de Georgia. Also, the 3-year-old event, which had been
launched by the state of Georgia as an economic development initiative, will now
be licensed to Medalist Sports, a sports marketing firm based in Tyrone.
But the state will continue to own the Tour de Georgia through the nonprofit
Georgia Partnership for Economic Development — and a share of the event's
proceeds will benefit the Georgia Cancer Coalition. "The 2005 Tour de Georgia
was the most successful by any measure," said Bill Todd, president of the
Georgia Cancer Coalition and a GPED board member. "For the first time, it
produced an operating surplus, which provided $50,000 to the cancer coalition."
The race also attracted 800,000 spectators around the state and had a $36
million economic development impact.
Craig Lesser, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development,
said the race provides great visibility for the state and brings the spotlight
to several different communities. In fact, more than 25 cities and towns are
bidding to hold the event in 2006, and about a dozen will be selected. That
said, Lesser added: "I don't think the state should be managing and operating a
bicycle race. But we should continue to support it financially and in any other
way that helps make it successful."
The state gave $600,000 to the $2.5 million 2005 event, and Lesser expects the
public commitment to drop next year. Meanwhile, Medalist Sports is recruiting
sponsors. "We are near the end of exciting discussions with a new title
sponsor," said Chris Aronhalt, managing partner of the firm. What remains to be
seen is what happens to the Tour de Georgia now that champion Lance Armstrong
has retired from competitive cycling. The 2005 race was aided by Armstrong
changing his training so he could ride in the Georgia event. Todd is hopeful
Armstrong will continue to play some role in the Tour de Georgia. "This is the
only race that is the nexus of his two passions — cycling and cancer," Todd
said. "Since he still has a responsibility with the Discovery team, I would hope
he would be involved."
Tumbling Creek Race Date Change Because of the date change to the 24 Hours of Adrenalin, SORBA Gainesville has opted to change the date of the Tumbling Creek MTB Rumble to October 16. Details are on the Racing forum at www.sorba.org. Trish's note: Argh! This now conflicts with the Ft. Yargo CX race. I guess I will be skipping Tumbling Creek.
8-20-2005
Junior State Championship Crit Being Rerun From John Johnson: "
After looking at the results and consulting with the other officials we have
decided to move the championship race for the younger Jrs to Dog Days with the Cat V and older Jrs.
Since the promoter for John's Creek fulfilled their requirements and we did race
there won't be refunds for the race. The results will stand as posted. However
the results will not be for the championship.
My goal is to make the championship as fair as possible and give all the riders
an equal opportunity to do well. I realize this may make the race difficult for
riders who are back in school or out of town for the new date. I apologize in
advance.
Kim, if you will get your web site updated with this information.
George, Can you send a note out to your mailing list letting people know about
the JRs and CatV state championship races moving to August 28th."
Trish's Note: According to the information I have, the Cat. v and all Junior races will have their state championships at the Dog Days Crit Aug. 28th because of the weather conditions at Johns Creek.
Refunds from John's Creek Crit From AG Edwards Cycling web page: "Due to heavy rain and lightning, Roswell Velo (A.G. Edwards & TravelGirl teams) cancelled the final three races of the John's Creek Criterium. Roswell Velo will refund all riders who entered the Juniors 15-16, Juniors 17-18 and Cat 5 races. For more information click here."
Save Gas, Ride a Bike! A little rant. Gas prices are outrageous! I paid $20.00 to fill up my Honda the other day. $2.59. Today it was MUCH CHEAPER (NOT!) at $2.56. Want to save some money? Ride your bike to work one day a week or to run errands. Ride to MARTA or Cobb Transit. Also, combine trips if you are in the car, take public transit, or telecommute. I wish my company encouraged any of these, but they don't. The only thing they offer is MARTA cards at a very small discount. Of course, they subsidize the parking garage heavily. (um, yes, I take advantage of this.) We don't have showers or changing facilities if we ride in. Because I work in an office, I have to look (and smell) professional. Bikes are not allowed in the building although there is a rack in a deserted corner of the parking garage. Thankfully, I have access to the service elevators and can get my bike into my office stealthily. As soon as the temperature moderate, I plan to make the 40 mile commute by bike at least once a week.
Souce: Unknown. Borrowed from a freind's website.
NORBA National at Sugar? Rumor has it (again) the Sugar Mountain in NC may host a round of the NORBA National Series in 2006. The tenative dates are July 9-11.
8-25-2005 Bike Roswell
Ride Time Change From Bike Roswell: It is getting dark! NEW START TIME 6:00.
Come test your cycling skills for 25 miles on the flats and hills of Roswell and
join Bike Roswell's Thursday night ride. We leave Roswell City Hall at 6:00 for
all groups. Be sure to arrive 15 minutes early to have enough time to get ready.
What: Ride 25 miles
Where: Roswell City Hall - 38 Hill St, Roswell, GA 30075
When: every Thursday evening at 6:00
Asheville Riding I just got back from an extended weekend in Asheville with some friends. We did a bit of riding (me=not much because of my injured back). We were privileged to have TransRockies Challenge winner Karen Masson as our guide part of the time. We had a very interesting conversation about unequal prize money for men and women in cycling events. Karen and her race partner got about $150 Canadian each for winning the TransRockies. The men's winning team got $3500 Canadian. Can you believe that? $500 CAN lousy that were then taxed at 25% because they are "foreign." The promoter got a piece of both girls' minds, as rightly he should. The purse did not even cover their airfare. The riding in Asheville was great. Within 2 miles of leaving town, we were doing a 10 mile climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We got passed by only a handful of cars in 2 hours. I'll have more on the riding later.
8-26-2005 Rider Profile Krista Park, local mtb racer extroidinaire, was profiled recently in the Forsyth News.
Share The Road Century The Atlanta Bicycle Campaign is hosting the Share the Road Century on Labor Day, Monday, September 5. Tshirts and lunch are included. The start will be the Atlanta Cycling store on Cobb Parkway. Registration starts at 7:00 am, and the ride starts at 8:30. The route will combine Beyond Six Flags and Silk Sheets.
Women's Cyclocross Clinic From Lisa Randall: Want to learn all about
cyclocross? Here's the info on the cyclocross clinic... Sunday, Sept. 25th at
Blankets Creek from 9-12 - meet in the skills training area.
We will discuss the nuts and bolts of cyclocross racing, dismounts, carrying the
bike, barriers, race strategy, and specific training for cross. We will also
discuss the differences and advantages to a cyclocross bike versus a mountain
bike for racing cross. Please bring your bike (either mountain or cyclocross)
and helmet. Those with cross bikes, feel free to join me for a lap or two of the
Dwelling Loop after the clinic and see just how versatile and fun a cross bike
can be!
Trish's Notes: Keep an eye on the forum at www.georgia-cross.com for info. on the clinic and other CX news. If you have a mountain bike, it would be helpful to take the bottle cages off as it makes the bike easier to life over the barriers. Also, take off the bar ends for safety sake.
Multi Sport Calendars I've gotten a few emails lately about "Where can I find information on Triathlons, Duathlons, etc.?" Sorry, I really don't know. I'm not into triathlons or other multisport races. Maybe there is an equivalent for Southeastern Cycling for Multipart, but if there is, I don't know.

Greenville Cycling Classic News St. Francis Hospital Title Sponsor of the
21st Annual Greenville
Cycling Classic.
Greenville, SC-Four-time US Olympian and Tour de France Stage 15 Champion,
George Hincapie and TIAA-Cref's Craig Lewis will battle it out at the 21st
Annual St. Francis Hospital Greenville Cycling Classic presented by Hincapie
Sportswear in downtown Greenville on October 15th
for the winner's share of the $10,000 cash purse. Once again, Greenville will
host some of the southeast's fastest and most exciting bicycle racing action.
Hincapie and Lewis will join hundreds of
professional and amateur cyclists during fun-filled weekend of criterium
racing. "We are excited to have world class athletes like George Hincapie and
Craig Lewis racing in downtown Greenville again," said Rich Hincapie, longtime
Greenville Cycling Classic Race Director. "George and Craig
have both represented the US at various races in Europe this year, and they are
both wrapping up terrific seasons in Greenville. We're extremely pleased to have
St. Francis Hospital as the title sponsor of this year's race. They have stepped
up with some incredible support for our event, and we hope to have them involved
for a long time to come."
Greenville's very own, George Hincapie will be vying for his second straight
victory at the Greenville Cycling Classic on October 15th. Hincapie is one of
Lance Armstrong's most trusted lieutenants and the only Discovery Channel Team
member to assist Lance with all seven of his record-breaking Tour de
France victories. Hincapie is one of America's most accomplished one-day
classics riders, with victories in several prestigious European professional
races. The four-time US Olympian and former US Professional Road National
Champion is coming off one of his most successful seasons to date, with a huge
win on Stage 15 of the 2005 Tour de France and several stage victories at the
Dauphine Libere. "I love racing and training in Greenville," commented the
ten-time Tour de France participant. "It's a great place to live and there is
always a great crowd at the Greenville Cycling Classic."
Craig Lewis is one of the young cycling phenoms on the TIAA-Cref cycling team,
directed by former US professional Jonathan Vaughters. Lewis has been touted as
one of the most talented bicycle racers in the US under the age of 23. He has
competed internationally at races in France, Italy, Spain and the Caribbean, as
well as the Tour of Georgia in the US. Lewis shows great promise for the future
and will surely have his sights set on the winner's share of the prize money at
the Greenville Cycling Classic.
Race visitors will be treated to lots of fast-paced cycling action in the middle
of downtown Greenville. The one-mile course will wind its way around the
historic West End of Greenville, finishing near the beautiful Liberty Bridge at
Falls Park. Cycling fans can catch all the action up close by viewing the racing
from anywhere along the course. Prime viewing locations will be along Main
Street through the West End, especially at the corners of Main Street and
Camperdown Street and Main Street and Augusta Streets. October 15th and 16th is
sure to be an exciting weekend of bicycle racing action. Races start at 9:00am
on Saturday, October 15th, with the day concluding in a 50-lap pro race at
6:00pm for a $10,000 cash purse. The start and finish of all races will be
located on Main Street
between Camperdown Street and Augusta Street in downtown Greenville.
8-30-2005 Bartow
County Tack Update From David Crites, Georgia Bikes: "I have talked to the
Bartow County Sheriff. He has received letters from those of you who sent them
too. At his request today, I sent him a map of the 12/27 mile route (and
described the Georgia Games route) and I sent him descriptions of the locations
of the tacking assaults from your messages about recent and past episodes
including the pad lock and unknown object throwing incident from March. The
Sheriff noted that this is criminal behavior. He and his staff will look in to
it."
