December 2005

12-2-2005 Endurance Races May 20-21 will see two endurance mtb races in the Southeast--the 12 Hours of Tsali put on by the ever popular Bergers of Gone Riding. Granny Gear Productions will also be putting on a 24 hour race at the GA International Horse Park. Endurance enthusiasts will have a hard time choosing!

Prelim 2006 Race Calendar The VERY preliminary 2006 Race Calendar is up. The dates are VERY subject to change. Keep checking back if you don't see your favorite race listed. I'm adding dates as I see them. If you know of a date, drop me an email. PROMOTERS email me with your dates for next year!

12-6-2005 Georgia Cross Wrap Up Thank you so much to the Linders and the Joneses for putting on the 2005 Georgia Cyclocross series. If you want the BEST run series in Georgia (out of road, cross, and mountain biking), just look to this year's Georgia Cyclocross series. The results were up within 24 hours, most often the same night as the race. The standings were up shortly thereafter if not at the same time. The prizes absolutely ROCKED! The courses were great, the officials were pleasant and kept things rolling right along, and the crowds were enthusiastic.

Monroe CX Photos I have a few photos from the Monroe CX races and the series finale awards up.

Coach Steve Steve Hill has announced his foray into the coaching business. Atlantans may know Steve for his success on the track, including a Masters National Championship this year. He has a training article up here.

12-7-2005 Bikes Needed for Charity Atlanta (December 2, 2005) -- Atlanta bicycle and fitness retailer CycleWorks once again is playing Santa for children in foster care. Teaming up with the non-profit, all-volunteer Foster Care Support Foundation, Inc. (FCSF) for the fourth holiday season, CycleWorks is collecting donations of “gently used” bikes, fixing them up, and delivering them to FCSF for free distribution.

“Children come to our center and get to choose their bike,” said Rachel Ewald, FCSF’s chairman and founder. “The joy on their faces is so heartening to see. Most of these foster children were taken from homes where they had been abused or neglected. To them, a bike is a wondrous gift – something they could not even hope for at Christmas, or ever.”

CycleWork’s owner Mark Gernazian and his “elves” check over all donated bikes and select only those that are in good enough shape to spruce up and make mechanically safe for young riders. “We even get donations of brand new bikes from generous supporters,” Gernazian said, and added he expects to deliver at least 150 bikes to the FCSF center this month.

Word of CycleWorks’ holiday bike donation program is getting out with the help of three Atlanta cycling organizations, Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, Southern Bicycle League, and Gwinnett Touring Club. “They are reaching out to their members to promote the program, and we are beginning to see great response. We have sent 20 bikes to the center since Thanksgiving,” Gernazian said.

Bikes can be dropped off at any of the four CycleWorks stores: 3576 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth; 4880 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta; 1580 Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell; and 4969 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. The stores will accept donations and issue receipts for tax purposes between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. All donations are tax deductible. Deadline for holiday donations is December 31. (CycleWorks continues to take in bike donations for FCSF throughout the year.)

The FCSF center at 1240B Alpharetta Street in Roswell receives and stocks a variety of new and gently used items necessary for the care of children in foster homes. The bikes and all other items provided by FCSF are donated or bought with donated dollars, and given free to basic-care foster families. Among the items furnished by FCSF’s giveaway program are clothing, equipment for
infants, toys, and school supplies. (Monetary donations also are needed and can
be sent to FCSF, 3334 Trails End Road, Roswell, GA, 30075.)

FCFS is a unique organization. Founded by Ewald five years ago, it operates solely on donations and goodwill from Atlanta communities. “No one is paid,” said Ewald. “All of us, staff and employees, are volunteers. And while we work with DFACS within CycleWorks – 2 Georgia’s foster-care system, we are not affiliated with that agency, and we have no government funding. Our motto is ‘All Kids Count.’ And, our mission is to change the face of foster care in Georgia by dedicating ourselves to providing supplies and resources that enable basic-care foster families to be better able to sustain and promote the development of their foster children.”

12-13-2005 Cyclocross National Championships The Georgia Cross Crew just returned from the Cyclocross National Championships! Everyone did really well, especially Daryl Sawyer (22nd in Master Men 35-39) and Shey Linder (29th in Master Men 30-34). Both divisions had well over 70 starters. I wish I could say my races went great, but they didn't. I tore/pulled my left thigh on Saturday before the start of the Masters Women 30-34 race. I'm sure a lot of you have read the reports about CX Nats on Velonews.com and cyclingnews.com. It snowed about 7-8 inches on Friday. By Sat., the course was nothing more than an ice skating rink that we were riding on. No one could keep their completely upright. I managed to finish the masters race, but that is about all I can say. I had a much better race on Saturday in the Women's B despite a heavy fall on my right hip. I'll be off the bike a few days recovering from the fall. Nothing is broken, but I have a lot of deep bruising and can barely walk.

Congratulations to all the Georgia racers! Lamar Mauney (Siemens-Landrover), Bob Kuhn (GTC), Jamie Parr (Independent Fabrication), Trish Albert (OTR Cycling-Strenflex), Chris Hurst (OTR Cycling-Strenflex), Daryl Sawyer (Nalley-Roswell Velo), Kim Sawyer (Travelgirl), Shey Linder (Bikeman.com-GTC), Todd Mills (Addictive Cycles), and Christian Parrett (CycleYouth). I hope I didn't leave anyone out.

To read more CX reports including mine, check out the Georgia cross forum at http://www.georgia-cross.com.

CX Nats Photos I have well over 500 photos from cyclocross nats up. If you would like to buy a digital photo, email me for prices and payment options.

Meehans Ride Time Change The Cycleworks team has announced their Saturday ride from Meehans in Vinings will start at 10:00 until March because of the cold weather.

GAP Awards Cancelled The GAP series awards scheduled for Dec. 17th in Athens have been cancelled.

12-15-2005 Vino to Tour De Georgia? Thanks to Molly for this one! From Liberty's website interview with Vinokourov: "What are your objectives for the next season?
My main objective is clear, the Tour de France. What will change will be the run-up to the Tour, because I will make my debut in the Vuelta a Murcia and then I will ride in the Milán-San Remo and the Setmana Catalana. This year I will neither be in the Paris - Nice nor the classics, which have always motivated me, but that also means an added stress. On the other hand, I will probably do the
Tour of Georgia and, then, the Dauphiné Liberé."

Charlotte, NC Share the Road" From the Southpark Cycles Newsletter: "Share The Road Campaign" may be promoted by CATS Unfortunately I don't have all of the full details yet but it appears that CATS is going to assist in promoting a "Share The Road Campaign" to help promote bicycle awareness. In response to the death of fellow cyclist Todd Weaver, a month ago I attended the Bicycle Advisory Committee monthly meeting and recommended that the committee request that CATS promote a "share the road campaign" on the outside of the city buses. CATS was already working on some cycling initiatives to help promote cycling awareness and safety, and the accident involving Todd Weaver may have expedited these initiatives. The early word is that there will be some sort of Share the Road emblem placed on the back of city buses to help promote driver awareness. However safety for cyclists can not stop there. We must not rely on just CATS to promote our message. We must do much more to promote awareness and we must better
educate fellow cyclists on proper commuting and rules of the road while amongst traffic.. You can either be part of the problem or part of the solution. If you want to help make Charlotte a better place to cycle check out the links below: www.charlottebikes.org  B.I.K.E.S will be meeting this Tuesday about "Share The Road Campaign" - info on home page" (Trish's Note: CATS is the Charlotte Transit authority. It's like MARTA.)

Carolling at Northeast Atlanta Rehabilitation and Nursing Home

Brighten Someone's Day It is the holiday season, and many of us have a lot to be thankful for. Good friends, good riding, a nice house, a good job, good health. Giving back to the community does not have to be cycling related. Every holiday season, a group of people I ride with gets together to sing Christmas carols at a nursing home or retirement community. It brings a little bit of happiness and a smile to the faces of those that are less fortunate. We can't sing, we don't even pretend that we can, but we sing our hearts out to see the smiles on the faces of the residents. Thanks to Becky Grant (she's at the piano in the picture) (Team Cycleworks) for organizing this year's service project.

2006 Calendar The 2006 calendar is up. See the link on the left hand side of the page. The schedules are VERY preliminary and are subject to change. Promoters: Email me at sttarlite at hotmail dot com with any race information.

Boneshaker Bicycles. What can I say, Randy? You have been great to me for the past 4 years. Thanks! You and Hamlet are the two best mechanics in Atlanta. You've kept all 4 of my bikes rolling along wonderfully, and I thank you for it! If anyone needs a great bike shop where the guys actually ride and know what cycling is about, check out Boneshakers. Give them a call at 770-222-2663, and tell them Trish sent you.

I'd also like to thank Scott Hodge at Addictive Cycles for helping me out of a few mechanical jams at mountain bike races this year. Sorella Cycling and the BOD Bike Group for the fun times at races. STR License Plates Georgia SHARE THE ROAD Specialty License Plate from GEORGIA BIKES! & NGBDA -- December 18, 2005 The Georgia SHARE THE ROAD specialty license plate is finally going to happen... once the state receives 1,000 applications of $25 each. How do you apply for your plate? You can apply for the Georgia SHARE THE ROAD plate starting on Tuesday, January 3 at the local "tag office" in your county of residence (an apply-by-mail option is in the works
too). The application fee is $25. Be sure to receive and save your receipt. This receipt can be used later as credit toward each plate’s manufacturing fee. The fee will also be refundable in the unlikely event that fewer than 1,000 applications are logged by the end 2007. Can we reach 1,000 applications? Yes. Cyclists have a number of reasons for wanting the plate beside the obvious and direct "Share The Road" and "Thank You" messages. For example, the plates show that cyclists own
motor vehicles. They show that cyclists pay fuel and other taxes and fees. Cyclists will know that the extra funds will be directed to the Governor’s Office Of Highway Safety for use in motorist and cyclist safety, education, and awareness projects and programs. There are also lots of people who want to support safer roadways and cycling because they have friends and family that bike. Florida sold 9,500 of their Share The Road tags in 2004; their fifth year of sales. Georgia’s population is
roughly half of Florida’s.

How do you get your plate? Once the 1,000 applications threshold is crossed, the state will begin manufacturing the plates. These will be distributed to those county tag offices where applications were submitted. You can get the plate on your normal tag renewal date (or there is the option of getting it early for an additional $25). The fees will be a one-time, $25, plate-manufacturing fee which will be credited upon showing your application receipt and the annual, $25, specialty license plate fee. You are still responsible for your standard, annual, $20, registration fee and any of your applicable ad valorem taxes. Where do the extra fees go? In regards to the annual, $25, SHARE THE  ROAD specialty license plate fee, the state says that "subject to the general appropriations process, it is the intent of the General Assembly that all such funds shall be utilized by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program to provide for motorist and bicyclist safety and interaction  education and awareness programs and media campaigns; adult and child bicycling safety training, workshops, and educational materials; assistance in forming local bicycle advisory committees; law enforcement education and implementation programs for policing by bicycle and policing to improve bicycling conditions; and 'share the road/yield to bicycles/bicyclists may use full lane' sign installations."
What should you do? You should apply for your Georgia SHARE THE ROAD specialty license plate by going to your local county tag office with your identification and $25 on January 3, or one day soon after that. Help secure the future of this specialty license plate and assist in getting
of these important tags out "on the road" as soon as possible. Please go to www.GeorgiaBikes.org for more information and to register on-line for automatic updates including a forthcoming apply-by-mail option. Thanks go out to the North Georgia Bicycle Dealers Association
(NGBDA www.Bike4Fun.com) for their help in marketing this SHARE THE ROAD
plate.

E. Rivers Break In? I have heard rumors that several cars were broken into last Sunday at E. Rivers Elementary School in Buckhead during the Airport ride. Supposedly, at least one was left unlocked. Use common sense--hide your valuables in your trunk or leave them at home and lock your car door.

Aaron's Pro Women's Roster FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 22, 2005
Contact: Micah Rice, Manager, Phone: (706) 546-1826
Aaron’s Corporate Furnishings finalizes pro women’s roster
Atlanta, GA—Athens Twilight Criterium winner Shannon Hutchison will be teaming up with Roswell Criterium winner Candice Blickem to round out one of the strongest criterium squads in the North American women’s pro peloton. “We have a small team, but we are really excited about the horsepower we have put on this squad”, said Micah Rice, General Manager of the Aaron’s Cycling Team. “We plan on giving some of these larger teams a run for their money this coming year.”
Besides Hutchison and Blickem, Catherine Powers and Mackenzie Dickey give the team tremendous depth for such a small squad. Powers, already a strong presence on the NRC scene has had solid podium finishes at the Chris Thater Criterium as well as at Superweek. Dickey, who is quickly making a name for herself, has dominated the New England race scene, while proving she is a force on the NRC circuit as well with podium finishes at Stages of the Fitchburg Stage Race. While the team’s focus remains criteriums and one day events, they will have a solid presence at a good portion of the remaining NRC races as well. Joining the team for select national calendar races will be Jen McRae from Texas, Tracy Sproule from North Carolina and members of the women’s regional elite team based out of Atlanta, Georgia. The Aaron’s Cycling Team also has an elite men’s team and a club team and is sponsored by Hincapie Sportswear, Bianchi Bicycles, Hank Aaron Jaguar/Land Rover, Mavic Wheels, Rudy Project eyewear and helmets, Maxxis Tires, PowerBar and Outback Bike Shop.

12-30-2005 Walmart Bike Lawsuit A Mableton mother is filing a lawsuit against Walmart for cheap bikes that break. If she'd tightened the skewer on her son's wheel and had he been wearing a helmet, the accident probably would not have been so bad. Now, I don't think Walmart bikes are good. They do fall apart, and people could get hurt. Being a little smart and knowing how to work your equipment is part of cycling!

Demise of a Restaurant I've been going to Lupita's Mexican restaurant on South Cobb Dr. now for a few years. It's the one of best of the Mexican restaurants in Vinings/Smyrna/Marietta (I'm not talking high brow or classy Mexican restaurants like Nuevo Laredo or Taqueria del Sol. I'm thinking of the greasy beans, chips, cheese, and beer you crave after a long ride). Alas, the last 2 times I've been there have been disasters. I think the management changed, and they also changed the food. Last night the normal cheese was something I've never seen at a Mexican restaurant before. Los Bravos on South Cobb Dr. is pretty good, and El Ranchero near the Marietta Square is also decent. Have a recommendation in Smryna/Vinings/Marietta/Austell? Email me.

Restaurant Employees Wear Cycling Jerseys An interesting article about a restaurant in Greenville, SC. I love the line about the bathrooms being for customers and cyclists only.

Dalton Group Ride Credit Agricole rider Saul Raisin will be hosting a group ride in Dalton, GA starting from Dalton Bikes at 10:00 am on Jan. 8. Sorry, I don't have any more details.
