Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will join the team in Atlanta and at other points along the route. Centennial Olympic Park will be host to the Tour of Hope on Wednesday, October 5 at 11 a.m.. This will mean a lot of excitement in Atlanta from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as Lance Armstrong and the riders make their way across America to Washington, DC."
SORBA News An efficient organization, non-profit status and a
reputation for working successfully with a broad range of land managers have
contributed to the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association's growth. In the SORBA
board meeting, August 20, 2005, at the Nimblewill Festival at the Wahsega Camp
in Dahlonega, Georgia, the association accepted the petition of three new
chapters, three of which draw members from North Carolina, bringing SORBA
affiliates from fifteen in four states to eighteen chapters in five states.
SORBA Board inducted the Triangle Off-Road Cyclists (TORC) from
Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill Area in North Carolina. TORC brought some 100 new
members into the organization. Bill Camp, TORC President said, "this partnership
is attractive because of SORBA's established infrastructure and programs will
allow us to concentrate on advocacy." Joe Twaddel, President of the Piedmont
Area Single Track Alliance (PASA), a Charlotte-based group said of his club
approval as a SORBA chapter, "We wanted to be involved with the premier mountain
bike advocacy group in the Southeast. SORBA's excellent track record with land
managers will be a tremendous help to us." GATAR, Gwinnett Area Trail Riders, in
Georgia also were approved as a SORBA chapter. Sean Shivey, GATAR President,
stated that his chapter's primary goal was to enhance the quality and quantity
of trails open to mountain bike riders in the county and a local SORBA
organization would help build positive community relations to make this possible
In addition, the Northeast Georgia chapter, based in Clayton, County increased
its service area into Franklin County, North Carolina and changed its name to
MARC, the Macon and Rabun County SORBA. SORBA's Executive Director, Tom Sauret,
said that all the interest in our association is gratifying, but added, "now we
have to follow through and be able to benefit all of our members and support all
of these chapters. We have a lot of challenges ahead, but it is clear that
mountain bikers know they need a full-time advocacy organization in the South."
New Grants Propel SORBA's Trail-building Efforts
The Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association's on-going efforts to provide mountain
biking trails to the public throughout the southeastern United States has been
recharged by two new grants that SORBA chapters have received. SoFA, SORBA
Freeride Alliance, which opened the first public freeride facility in the nation
in Cumming, Georgia, in March 2005, was awarded a $500 grant by bicycle
manufacturer Kona. The money has been set aside for imporventes to Central Park
in Forsyth County, GA South of the gnat line, the SORBA chapter in Macon,
Georgia, OMBA, was awarded a tune-up grant from the International Mountain
Biking Association and the National Off-Road Bicycling Association. These grants
are awarded to organizations for work on trails that double as race courses.
OMBA will use the $500 to improve and expand the mountain bike ace course at
Arrowhead.
Fort Yargo's Mountain Biking Trails to be showcased in the Blockhouse Boogie
For the first time, all mountain bikers, from newbies to experts, can test their

season. Participants must hold a Georgia Association of Promoters' license (a
one-day license will be available at the venue). Racers will compete for medals
and prizes. Free children's races are offered for kids up to age 12. Children

Women's Ride Time Change The Women's ride in Atlanta that meets at Peachtree Bikes on Wednesdays will start leaving at 6:20 since it is starting to get dark out a bit earlier. Trish's note: This is a fun group of gals to ride with if you are looking for ride 15-16 mph with lots of climbing. The pack regroups at several places.
Intown Ride Time Changes Alas, the summer sun is starting to fade into the west earlier. From the Weekday World Cup:
The 2005 cycling season "baby" arrived in the Spring, sweet with innocence and
unfettered hopes for the year to come, swaddled in a new custom kit, straddling
the latest sub-16 lbs. wonderbike. Now, it is simply a grizzled, jaded,
road-rash laden Masters rider, sheathed in the tattered remains of a once-proud
uniform, astride a dented frame, who eagerly anticipates the advent of scotch,
cigar and tailgating season. The carbo-packed hopes of April must soon yield to
the flab-infused gloom of November, soon to appear as one of those awful "Old
Men Who Get Fat In Winter" cartoons from VeloNews we all hate. "To everything
(turn, turn, turn), there is a season (turn, turn, turn)". Tears in my eyes
.....
It is that time of year. Schools are back in session. The mornings and evenings
have a distinct "chill" in the air (if 78 degrees can be described as chilly,
but give me a little latitude for effect). The malls are filled with new stock
of coats, sweaters and mittens. Macy's already has Christmas ornaments on
display, and Publix has had Halloween candy on sale for two weeks. Lance is
already contemplating a return from "retirement". The Atlanta peloton is flush
with rumors of pending team changes, contract signings, sponsor presentations
and uniform designs. Soon we will all be hunting for the elusive missing arm
warmer.
75 days have now passed since the Summer Solstice on 06/21/05. There are now 54
days until Daylight Saving Time ends on 10/30/05. Here in Atlanta the sun now
sets at 07:57 PM ET, which is 55 minutes earlier than in late June / early July.
The sun is setting 1 - 2 minutes earlier each day. This is a long way of saying
that, regretfully, the time has come to adjust the start times for the In-Town
Classics.
Official U.S. Time is provided by the two time agencies of United States: a
Department of Commerce agency, the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST), and its military counterpart, the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO).
Readings from the clocks of these agencies contribute to world time, called
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The time maintained by both agencies should
never differ by more than 0.000 0001 seconds from UTC.
Therefore, after careful consultation with these official agencies, and by
virtue of the powers vested in me by the Bureau of Weights and Standards, I
hereby declare the following:
- Effective the week of 09/12/05, the start times for the Sandy Springs
(Tuesday), Peachtree Battle (Wednesday) and Chastain (Thursday) rides will move
up by 15 minutes to 06:15 PM ET. Hence, this will take effect on Sandy Springs
09/13/05, Peachtree Battle on 09/14/05 and Chastain on 09/15/05.
- Effective the week of 09/26/05, the start times for the Sandy Springs
(Tuesday), Peachtree Battle (Wednesday) and Chastain (Thursday) rides will move
up by another 15 minutes to 06:00 PM ET. Hence, this will take effect on Sandy
Springs 09/27/05, Peachtree Battle on 09/28/05 and Chastain on 09/29/05. In
addition, effective 09/27/05 the Sandy Spring ride will revert to the "short
option" used during the first four weeks in the Spring, therein eliminating the
illustrious "Three Hump" climb through Vinings.
- Effective 11/06/07, the start time of the Tucker Ride will move from 09:00 AM
ET to 10:00 AM ET. This will remain in effect until Daylight Saving Time returns
again. The Sunday Ride will continue to start at 09:00 AM ET sharp, because, as
noted previously, change simply is not tolerated by the Executive Committee of
the Sunday Ride.
Please consult with the leaders of any rides in the Atlanta metro area not
listed above regarding any changes to their respective start schedules. A
subsequent announcement will be posted in October regarding off-season ride
times.
An early, early reminder. On 08/08/05, President George W. Bush signed the
Energy Policy Act of 2005. This Act changed the time change dates in the U.S.
Beginning in 2007, Daylight Saving Time will begin on the second Sunday of
March, and end the first Sunday of November. Fortunately, we have 545 days to
prepare ourselves for change ......
A final reminder. There are two great centuries this month - the Wilson 100 at
08:00 AM ET on 09/11/05 (http://bikesbl.org/apps/wilson.pdf), and the Six Gap
Century on 09/25/05 at 07:30 AM ET (http://www.dahlonega.org/aboutus.asp?id06=124&par06=23).
There are also two events left in the Maxxis Georgia Cup, the LaGrange Autour de
Lac 0n 09/17/05 & 09/18/05 and the Aaron's Buckhead Grand Prix on 10/01/05 &
10/02/05 featuring the return of the former Tour du Town course - details can be
found at http://www.georgiacup.com/. I know this only touches the surface of
many great Fall events in the Southeast.
Best Regards,
Todd Curtis Fryburger

Junior Series in the Carolinas? There was an interesting bit in John
Lieswyn's diary about a
possible Junior series in the midwest and the Carolinas that he is trying to
put together.
Saul Raisin Best Climber Saul Raisin is currently in the best climber's jersey at the Tour L'Avenir, which is known as the "Young Rider's Tour De France."
Buckhead Bellyache Parking From St. Phillips Cathedral: The Cathedral
Parking Lot will have restricted parking on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 due to the
setup for the Banks and Shane concert the following night. Please use the lower
parking lot.
We'd love for you to join us for the concert on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 pm.
Please contact Mary Croft at 770-937-9701."
Trish's notes: We are free to park in the lower lot. St. Phillips is kind enough
to let us use their parking lot and bathrooms, so please respect their request
to use the lower lot. I've noticed a few things recently that have been bugging
me.
This is a CHURCH parking lot. Please respect the church members. Use a large
towel to change. There have been a few bare backsides seen recently. St.
Phillips is kind enough to leave the side entrance open, so that we can use
their bathrooms. Do not pee in the bushes. These are real bathrooms with
flushing toilets, air conditioning, and cold water fountains! Take advantage of
them!
Smile at the church members and say "hi" or ask "how are you" or "great weather
tonight." Smiles make people feel good. Happy church members=we get to keep
using their parking lot.
Park towards the back of the lot, not by the church's side entrance. Leave the
closer spots for church members attending church functions.
Didn't your mother teach you to watch your language around other people? This is
a church, so please show a little respect and lay off the bad language. That's
what going to dinner afterwards is for--boasting and bragging about the ride and
using whatever language you want. If you go into the church to use the
facilities, use your "indoor voice." Don't shout like you are outside. Some
rather crude language was used in the church the other week within my earshot.
This isn't the bloody neighborhood pub. Again, please show respect for the
church and its members.
9-12-2005 Pizza Ride Time Change The Pizza Ride in Avondale will start at 6:15 this week.
George Hincapie Day Saturday was George Hincapie Day in Greenville, SC. Riders rode and walked in a parade to honor the Tour De France Stage Winner. Read the full story here.

Junior Cyclist goes to the World Championships in Italy by Andy Johnston
Who would have thought a year ago that 17-year-old Snellville resident would
rise to such heights? Over the past year Mike Cummings has climbed through the
ranks to become one of the nations top junior cyclists. He rides off-road, not
the paved roads that Lance Armstrong speeds along, but the rugged backcountry
deep in the forest-mountain biking as it's called; a sport where the rider
pedals his way through all that nature has to offer. Race preparation takes him
across single-track trails, dirt roads, up 2,000-foot climbs, and over any
obstacle. Through the help of his coach and team he is now poised to become the
world's top cyclist.
Mike's goal for this season was to make the Worlds Team and go to Livingo, Italy
to race the World Championships as an American athlete on September 1st. Only 5
junior athletes were offered this chance. For Mike, this meant total dedication
to the sport. Cycling is a 24-7 job if one wants to be successful. Everything
you do affects your performance on the bike in some way. Mike's dad says that he
even skipped dessert at Thanksgiving last year because he wanted to do good at
the 2005 Worlds. Mike already had aspirations a year ago when he and his coach,
Andy Johnston, began planning the training program to take him to this point.
Andy is a professional mountain-biker, and
also manages Cycle Youth, the team Mike is on. "I couldn't do this without a
coach," said Mike. "I would always just go out and ride real hard, but my coach
showed me how to be scientific with training and how the body responds to
different forms of training." Mike spent the summer traveling to Utah, Idaho and
Colorado racing the qualifying events to make the team.
Having a team structure like Cycle Youth is a tremendous help for any athlete
trying to make it in the cycling world. There is so much that has to come
together at the right time to be successful. The first 90 percent of preparation
is easy enough, but it is that last 10 percent that takes the knowledge and
effort few have mastered. There is a lot to this sport that most do not realize,
even amateur racers are not aware of the depth of commitment there is at the
top. The Cycle Youth kids have an advantage. "Race strategy is one of the
hardest things to teach," Andy explains that it's just easier for the rider to
hang out and listen to the stories of his or his fellow pros' own racing
experiences. "If the kids are in a listening mode, then I will just start
talking and rattle off lesson after lesson of racing tips and secrets." At this
age the teenagers learn really fast. The parents are amazed with the progress
their child is able to make under the right guidance.
Mike has been lucky to have the right nurturing. "A kid with this kind of talent
you just can't let slip through the cracks," says Andy. "I have been able to
help him with training, but also through the team we have been able to put
together great industry support, which is vital to success." Mountain biking is
partly a marriage of man and technology, and you have to have good equipment to
win. Kenda tires has been a big help this year offering both product and
financial support. We do a lot of work through our local shop, Apalachee Cycle,
in Dacula, which sells the KHS bikes the team rides. The team has also been able
to set Mike up in a Colorado Altitude Mountain altitude tent for the weeks
leading up to the World Championships. This is the same tent top pros use to get
used to the
high elevation and to naturally stimulate red blood cell growth. Now he doesn't
have to worry about the ill effects of high elevation on his performance. The
tent will really be an asset when he competes at the National Championships in
Mammoth, California two weeks later. Mike's success this year will also motivate
his current sponsors to step it up next year, and bring recognition for Cycle
Youth.
Cycle Youth is a non-profit 501-C3 organization based in Georgia dedicated to
helping young cyclist in the southeast. Donations are welcome, please visit
www.cycleyouth.com for more information. We
still need help raising funds to pay for this trip.
Trish's Notes: 1. This article was slightly edited by me for length and clarity. The spirit of the content has not been altered. 2. Mike placed 59th in Livigno over Labor Day weekend. Congratulations Mike!
Photo Crazy I shot well over 100 photos this weekend. I'll post the best from the velodrome soon. I can't resist posting this:
Thanks Sport Ladies I have to say that I had more fun at Sunday's race than I have in a long time. Thanks to Cathy, Kari, Aimee, Lisa, Lisa, Jody, Norma, Kate, Ashley, and the rest of the Sport Ladies for the great competition, laughs, and chats!

DLV Festival of Speed Congratulations to OTR Cycling's Ryan Pumpian! Saturday night Ryan won the Cat. 3/4 men's overall at the Festival of Speed at the Dick Lane Velodrome. Ryan also won the final scratch race that saw the Top 5 riders facing off for a cash prize.
Legs of a National Champion A friend of mine asked me what does a "track racer" look like. I pointed him to National Champions Anton Quist and Steve Alfred, who were racing Saturday night at the velodrome. I can't remember who this is (either Anton or Steve), but this is what the legs of a National Champion track racer look like.
Track Photos I just put up my track photos.
9-15-2005 Northlake and Pizza Ride Times Both rides move to 6:00 starting next week.

Governor of SC Rides "Gov. Sanford Announces October Bike Ride BIKE RIDE
FROM AIKEN TO COLUMBIA CONTINUES SECOND ANNUAL FAMILY FITNESS CHALLENGE
Columbia, S.C. - September 14, 2005 - Gov. Mark Sanford today announced
plans for a Fall bike ride as part of his 2nd Annual Family Fitness Challenge,
an initiative aimed at improving the health of South Carolinians through
encouraging healthier decisions in their day-to-day
lives. This year's bike ride will take place on Sunday, October 9th, beginning
in Aiken and ending in Columbia. So far this year, the governor has participated
in several events as part of the Challenge,
including the Orangeburg March of Dimes WalkAmerica event, and a canoe trip
through Sparkleberry Swamp. "A big part of quality of life in our state goes
back to how we look and feel as individual South Carolinians, and the fact is
that too many of us don't get enough exercise and eat the wrong things, leading
to our state being near the top of the list for a whole host of health problems
due to unhealthy lifestyles," Gov. Sanford said. "This bike ride is all about
challenging folks to be just a little bit more active every day. Whether you
come out and ride five blocks, five miles or 50 miles, I'd invite all South
Carolinians to come join with me, Jenny and the boys and take this step toward a
healthier state." Further logistical details of the Governor's Family Fitness
Challenge will be posted on Gov. Sanford's website, www.scgovernor.com. The
Family Fitness Challenge is part of a larger initiative, the Healthy SC
Challenge, a results-oriented initiative aimed at motivating South
Carolinians to start making choices to improve health and well-being. The
Healthy SC Challenge will reward the county with the best overall improvements
in increased physical activity and decreased BMI statistics (weight) and
smoking rates. Stay tuned for additional details from the Governor's
Office regarding Gov. Sanford's Family Fitness Challenge. For additional
information please call 803-734-2100, or e-mail familyfitness@sc.gov.
Roswell Thursday Ride Info. From Bike Roswell: "I want to thank all of
you for your participation in the Roswell Thursday night ride. It has become a
great weekly ride. We are very fortunate to have a Mayor that is a cyclist and
rides the Thursday night when his other communicable duties don't interfere. I
heard the Mayor was on the Webb Bridge ride this past Saturday. We have three
more rides left. 9/15, 9/22 and 9/29. On Thursday Sep 29 we will start the LAST
Thursday night ride at 6:00 sharp. We will have police support at main

abilities to join us. There is a 20 mile option. My sons have been begging to go
on the ride and they plan to join us so bring your friends for a parade of

The Cat. 3/4 Men round turns 1 and 2 at the Festival of Speed at the DLV on Saturday.
9-16-2005 But Trish! Don't You Promote Events?? NO!!!!!!!!! In no way am I associated with any of the events I list in the calendar. I don't promote races, centuries, fun rides, or any cycling activities. I just list them here. The only exception is something my team may be doing, or you may see me volunteering at an event (just as a volunteer). Please DO NOT email me about events. I don't know when the Cat. 5 50+ Men start. I don't know why there is not a waiting list for the 10,000 foot Climbing Spectacular in EBF. I don't know why the ride doesn't have a corner marshall. That's why I put a link to the event website if I know it. Rant off.
I also do not list centuries (few exceptions), advocacy things (few exceptions. Lots of other sites do advocacy listings), etc. Why? I don't have time. This website is NOT my full time job. I work 40-50 hours a week at a job to pay my bills, ride 10-15 hours to train, race, do the occasional century, spend time with my friends, take care of a household, etc. So, don't bug me! :)
A note of thanks to CC for the kind words about my website tonight. They were really needed!

I've noticed a few things recently that have been bugging
me.
Creative Loafing Creative Loafing published an article about the Festival of Speed at the DLV last weekend. I have to agree with them about the band. The "Star Spangled Banner's" new lyrics were quite entertaining. "who brought stripes and bright stars," (whose broad stripes and bright stars) "the ramparts we washed," (the ramparts we watched) and "for the land of free" (o'er the land of the free). The one CL missed was "though the frerilous fight." I thought it was a perilous fight. Otherwise, the band was very entertaining and did a great job of filling in the "dead air" that is usually between track races.
Blockhouse Boogie The Gap race, the SORBA Blockhouse Boogie, made it into the Winder paper. Excuse their typos.

Track News From the DLV:
"DL Velodrome Racer News Wednesday Training Racing continues till the end of
September – our pace-line warm-up starts at 7:00pm and racing at 7:30pm –
followed by pizza and beer at OZ…. Sorry it's bring your own cash for pizza and
beer :) We need USABLE adult helmets and cycling shoes for the next phase of our
youth programs – so please clean out your closet and basement and bring them
down over the next couple of Wednesdays. Several riders have approached us with
a request to keep the track open during the winter for training – the catch is
of course money – the city requires Insurance if we ride on the velodrome. But
if we get enough people interested in training during the winter then the cost
should be about $35 to $50 per person –if you have an interest in winter
training at the velodrome then please let us know via email.
Thanks again for a great 2005 session – and I look forward to seeing all of you
at the velodrome!
Pete Antonvich, President, East Point Velodrome Association, Inc.

Athens MTB TT From SORBA Athens: September 29th 2005 Mitchell Bridge (Athens) Average Time Trial Start Time: 6:15 PM Hey everyone To answer all those who’ve been asking me when SORBA Athens is going to hold another one of our famous time trials: There will be a SORBA Athens Time Trial on Thursday evening, Sept. 29th at 6:15 PM at the infamous Mitchell Bridge trails. If you participated in either of the time trials we had there last year, you’ll remember what an intense course Mitchell Bridge can be, and what fun it is to ride. Will the fastest time take home the trophy?... NO! Will the slowest? NO! All the times will be recorded and an average time calculated. The rider whose time ends up being CLOSEST TO THAT AVERAGE will be declared the winner, and will take home 1st prize. That means that if you’ve been finishing on the podium in Pro/Expert races, you might want to slack it down a bit. If you’re on the beginner side of things, go hard and maybe you’ll come away with the win that’s been out of reach till now! This is one test where a C is better than an A, so come on out all you SLACKERS and gun for AVERAGE!!! WHERE: Mitchell Bridge Trails – Meet at Mitchell Bridge Road, parking lot opposite the river (across the bridge) from Ben Burton Park WHEN: Thursday, September 29 TIME: 6:15 PM ENTRY FEE: $3 for current SORBA members. If you join at the event your entry is waived. Multiple runs will be permitted as long as daylight permits. The course will be similar to last year’s courses, but as always the trailkeepers have cooked up some differences. Expect lots of climbing, lots of technical riding, and some screaming downhills. BYOB and make it a party, see you there! Charlie

9-26-2005 Hosting Fees Due! The hosting fees for Southeastern Cycling are due! :) as well as the domain name registration renewal, etc. If you like what you see and use this website often, please make a donation! Click below to make a donation via paypal or email Trish at sttarlite@hotmail.com for info. on where to send a check. With paypal, you can even use your credit card! I had one question about donations: Southeastern Cycling is not a non profit company, so you cannot deduct the donations on your taxes. All monies received go towards SE Cycling expenses such as hosting fees, domain name registration fees, and a few misc. expenses encountered every year. These add up to several hundred dollars. I (Trish) am a poor cyclist, too, so any donations are greatly appreciated! I don't get paid to do this website, and I do all of the work myself.
Weekend Happenings Sunday was the Six Gap Century ride I heard that all 2000 slots sold out and that there was waiting list. I'm sure a torturous time was had by all that attempted all six gaps. I went to the Women's Cyclocross Clinic. About a half a dozen women showed up, and by the end they were all hopping barriers like old pros. The Bad Lasses...I expect to see you guys at the next CX race! ! I'll have photos from the CX Clinic when I get around to getting them out of the camera.

New Mailing List The membership is being moderated for now. Feel free to post anything cycling related. Posting rules will remain loose for now. Post your sales list, race announcements, club announcements, mountain bike work parties, etc. Discuss the latest training techniques, Bubba's ugly socks he wore on Sunday's century, the great new product you tried, or the squirrely rider that took out out on the Bellyache. No commercial posts, though, at least for now.
9-30-2005 Cyclocross What is going on in the Georgia Cyclocross series? It starts Oct. 16 at Ft. Yargo near Winder. Come out and watch the action! Cross courses are like crit courses--you can see more than one part of the course from one vantage spot. The action is fast, the barriers like to take out riders or at least make their shins bloody, and it's a heck of a lot of fun to do, too! Think NASCAR on cyclocross bikes. Don't have a cross bike? Bring your mountain bike! Just take the bar ends off per USCF rules. There are divisions for everyone from C (beginner) to A (Cat. 1/2/Pro), to the Juniors, Master, and Ladies.
A great thing this year--the A Women and A Men have the same cash payout at all the races! Year end prizes are rumored to be fantastic! See http://www.georgia-cross.com for more information.
Practices are Wednesdays at Jim Miller Park in Marietta, which is off of Austell Rd. See the formums at www.georgia-cross.com for more details and additional practice times and locations.
Winter Rides As Daylight Savings time comes to an end, thoughts turn to winter training rides. I will update the Atlanta Rides page with more information when I have it. Also, watch here and on the Cycleatlanta mailing list.
Windtrainer Classes Shops and Coaches--are you offering a windtrainer/spinning/rollers class this winter? Email me with the details, so that I can put it up.
