Charlotte Article The Charlotte Observer has an interesting article on Neal Boyd of Charlotte Sports Cycling , which organizes many of the events in Charlotte.

8-4-2006 DUMB! DUMB! DUMB! DUMB! DUMB! I saw some very stupid things Thursday on the Bellyache this week. Some of you may remember that Mo was tragically killed by a car at the intersection of Paces Ferry and Woodland Brook several years ago. This has always been a dangerous intersection because of the speed cars come flying through and the semi blind curve up the hill towards the Vinings side. Thursday I saw someone turn right directly in front of a car coming 45+ mph down the hill. Personally it wouldn't hurt me to see this person taught a lesson as they tend to do a lot of stupid things on group rides, but getting smacked by a car is a little much for me to wish on anyone. The group waited until the car passed. Several people were also riding several FEET across the yellow line on Woodland Brook for about a quarter mile. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!?!?! There are blind curves and blind hills on that road. You CANNOT see the cars coming. Anyone that purposely rides across the yellow line is ASKING to get hit by a car. Why do you want to play chicken with your life and your safety?? I think it's time I reposted my "rules of group riding."

1. Hold your line. Do not wander into someone else's "ride space." To quote the movie Dirty Dancing, "This is my dance space. This is your dance space. You don't come into mine, and I don't come into yours." Do not ride all over the road. If you are going to change position, look around before "darting" to your new position. Be predictable! Don't be a squirrel.

2. Do NOT ride in your aerobars in a group. It is dangerous, and you could take out yourself and the rest of the group. You do not have as much control over your bike while in aerobars. If it is too much of a temptation, remove your aerobars for group rides.

3. Do not yell rude words or make rude gestures towards cars. They are bigger than you. You will lose the fight. Be nice to fellow road users even if they aren't.

4. When in a paceline, always pull off to the left. If you pull off to the right, you can hurt yourself by running into a curb, grass, gravel, and bus stop signs.

5. Do not take both hands off of the bars when riding in the pack. Drift to the back to take your jacket off, eat, whatever. If you run over something and lose control of your bike, you will probably go down.

6. Please point out pot holes and other road debris, but do NOT swerve around it. See #1-HOLD YOUR LINE.

7. If you are stopping or slowing down, yell "stopping" or "slowing down," so that riders behind you can safely apply their brakes.

8. Do not cross the yellow line. Cars are bigger than you, and you will get squashed. When you cross the yellow line, you cause the accident, not the car. There have been several people hit in Atlanta in the last year when they  crossed that magic line. Don't chance it. We want to see everyone week after week!

9. Do not cut out in front of cars. See #8. The car is bigger than you, and you will get squished.

8-7-2006 Hodge!?! Why'd you have to go slam into the tree? Get better soon, man!

Learn to Mountain Bike for Women
Saturday, August 26 from 9am to noon Sorella Cycling will be hosting a free beginner mountain biking clinic for women of all ages on Saturday, August 26 from 9am to noon at Big Creek in Roswell, Ga.

Perfect for the truly novice mountain biker wanting to play in the dirt in a friendly, all female environment, the clinic will be led by Sorella Cycling's cross-country mountain biker Tracey Woods and endurance mountain biker I Ling Matthews. We will offer hands-on instruction and guidance with respect to basic cycling gear requirements, pre-ride bike check essentials and general mountain biking safety. We'll follow up with a demonstration of on-bike riding basics and then hit the trail for a group ride. We'll end with a group discussion (Q & A session), provide a list of the great trails in the area as well as resources for meeting other like-minded women who love to ride. Participants should plan to bring a mountain bike, an approved cycling helmet and riding gear, lots of water and a snack.

Peachtree Bikes will be co-sponsoring the clinic and may have a limited number of mountain bikes (sizes may vary) to test ride at the clinic. The clinic is limited to 15 or so participants on a first come, first serve basis. Please feel free to forward this information along to any women who you may think would be interested. To reserve your spot, contact Tracey Woods at concreteblonde2004@yahoo.com.

Trish's note: This would be a good clinic for a first time mountain biker or someone that has been out a few times. This is NOT a clinic for those looking for race tips, experience/intermediate riders, etc.

NC RR Championships Cancelled  "I must humbly apologize and regret to pass on to you all the
following  notification. The North Carolina State Road Race Championship must be cancelled.
One of  our approvals to conduct the event on the Fort Bragg military installation was changed because of a conflict of military units in training on ranges and in areas surrounding the race course. Originally there was no conflict, but that has changed as of August 4th. Because of C4's other
commitments thru September, we will not be able to reschedule this event. All money received for current registrations will be refunded. We ask that you bear with us as we process your refunds. We will be refunding your registration fee as well as the fee charged by Active.com. Sincerely, Robert F. Havens, President, Cross Creek Cycling Club, (910) 987-1888"

Bad, Bad News for the TdG From cyclingnews.com: "Ford dealers decline 2007 Tour de Georgia
By Mark Zalewski, North American editor

The Tour de Georgia is once again shopping around for a new title sponsor after the Atlanta District Ford Dealers Advertising Association decided to not renew their title sponsorship for next year's race. "I think the indicators were out there," said Jim Birrell, managing partner of Medalist Sports, the owner of the race. "The state of the economy is a factor. They closed down a plant here right before the Tour, so that was an indication that their interests were changing."

Birrell said that the decision by the Ford dealers association was made before the Tour de France, and that the situation with Floyd Landis, the winner of the 2006 race, was not a factor. However,
Birrell acknowledged that the Landis question is out there as he and his partner court new potential sponsors. "The questions is certainly being asked, but I don't think it will affect the participation. They
know the event is not built off of one individual. The effect it has on the spectators and media is great."

Birrell said that he is optimistic about finding a new sponsor, and  that talks are already under way. "We are building some options for the 2007. We have had some very engaging conversations with some new title sponsors."

8-9-2006 SOUTHEASTERN CYCLING BACKS ITS FIRST POLICITAL CANDIDATE!

JOHN JOHNSON RUNS FOR THE USA CYCLING EASTERN SECTION TRUSTEE

Trish's Note*: I am fully backing John Johnson, our regional official, for the USA Cycling Trustee for the Eastern Section. Voting begins August 15 at www.usacycling.org. Please consider voting for John. He does a tremendous amount for cycling in Georgia and Alabama. John would be OUR voice in USA Cycling. This is John's candidate statement:

"Hello,

My name is John Johnson and I am running for USA Cycling Trustee for the Eastern Section. I have been active in the sport of cycling for well over 20 years as a racer, promoter, official and most recently the Local Coordinator for Georgia and Alabama. I am at races racing or officiating 35 to 40 weekends a year starting with the early season training racings and continuing through cyclocross in late fall. I have been and will continue to be readily available to the racers, promoters, officials and fans. Since I am constantly at races and training rides, I hear about what is concerning riders and promoters on a regular basis. Such as, the need for more support for grass roots grass roots and juniors racing. The need for more consistency in officiating state to state and most recently some suggested improvements for the National championships.

I have demonstrated a passion for the sport of cycling. I have also demonstrated a clear focus on what it takes to continue to grow the sport. I have worked with promoters to improve and expand races. I have worked with the USA Cycling staff to provide better transparency to rule making and the application of rules. I have worked with various teams to improve and enhance the level and accessibility of junior racing. I have worked with promoters and help support them with the various local government authorities to increase the availability good race venues.

It is important that whoever is elected to this position have more than just a bicycle racing background. The Board of Trustees is responsible for direction of the affairs of the federation (USA Cycling), as such it also take someone with demonstrated business acumen. I am a senior manager for a Fortune 100 company. I have demonstrated the ability to understand the nuances of decisions and am able to develop and implement a variety of strategies including improved customer service, lower costs, improved quality control, and more focused business models.

You need to ask yourself several questions: 1) Would you like to see more transparency in the rule and decision making for USA Cycling? 2) Should USA Cycling be doing more to grow the sport at all levels including master and Junior racing and possibly most importantly 3) Would you like your Trustee to be available to you and respect you and your opinions. If you answered yes to any of these questions, I would encourage you to vote for me.

I can not guarantee you will always agree with every decision I make. But, I can guarantee that each and every decision will be carefully evaluated to determine what is best for the sport at all levels of competition I look forward to getting input from riders, promoters and officials on what we can do together to continue to develop and grow the sport. For those of you I don’t personally know, I would encourage you to talk with someone who does know me.

Again, my name is John Johnson and I am running to be the next Trustee for the Eastern Division of USA Cycling."

*As always, my views and mine and my own only. They do not necessarily represent the views of Southeastern Cycling sponsors, advertisers, contributors, etc..

Linda Foti (Cycleworks) leads the sprint at Master's Track Nationals

Master's Track National Championships Linda Foti (Cycleworks) won the Silver Medal in the Match Sprints at Master's Track Nationals in Colorado Springs. Because Linda qualified 4th in the flying 200m, she had to claw her way through the quarter finals, semi finals, and finals... Her biggest obstacle getting to the Gold Medal round was Kim Nuffer (last year's National Match Sprint Champion). Linda took Kim 2 out of 3 rounds in order to advance to the gold medal round.

In all, Linda had to go through 9 Match sprints to make it to the Gold medal round. Once Linda got there she had to race against Julie Batista, who is several years Linda's junior, from Texas. Julie and Linda are almost identical in size and shape. In the end Julie took Linda 2 straight.

Both races were close, but Julie got the jump and held off Linda both times... the second match sprint win for Julie against Linda was less than one quarter of a bike length.

Steve Hill (EPVA) won two Master's National Championships (Kilo and 200 meter TT) and set a World Record in the 200 meter TT.

Way to go Linda and Steve!

Steve Hill (EPVA) on his way to a new 200 meter TT World Record and his second National Championship

8-27-2006 50-52 cm Cross Bike Needed Ok, we got Alison "Ms. Sorella Webmistress Godess" hooked on cyclocross! Let's help her find a 50-52 cm CX bike. This is from Alison

"....hooked on cross and i'm planning to race this season. but i refuse to do it on my full suspension mtb, too darn heavy!

so - I'm looking for a cross bike that's a 50 or 52...i'm not sure which I'd need. I ride a 52 road bike, but have heard that i want a cross bike to be a bit smaller. I demoed a cannondale bike this weekend and 50 seemed to be right on. Looking to spend about $1000 or less.

please email me at aknight00@gmail.com if you know of anyone selling something in this size/price range. Thanks, Alison"

Women's CX Clinic The Women's CX Clinic put on by Kari Linder that I assisted with went great! We introduced 13 women to the sport of cyclocross. Two are planning to do most of the series, and I think over half will come out for at least one race. Thanks to Kari for a successful clinic! I've been told there will be a "coed" clinic closer to cross season.
