Thursday Car Less Road Rides at The Coliseum on Tyvola Rd Jack Crouch, Tim Long, and Pete Brisette that work with us here at SouthPark Cycles have gotten permission to start a CAR FREE group ride at the Coliseum on Tyvola Rd. Apparently the speed bumps will be removed and the course will be ready to ride this Thursday afternoon at 6:00. For more info call SPC and ask for Pete. There apparently will not be any parking on the coliseum site so you will need to either ride there or park at Renaissance Park. The ride will start at the front entrance to the coliseum building.

SouthPark Cycles Sponsors Endurance Fest EnduranceFest Sports Event and Music Festival is a one day event on September 2nd, 2006 at the Coliseum that will leave you tired, smiling, and with a new sense of pride. The Coliseum, and 154 acre property's projected development plan includes removing the coliseum and erecting a multi-use complex which would include housing, retail and office uses. Not only will this bring new jobs and services to Charlotte but the plan is open to new
development of open walking/running paths, cycling routes and the preservation of the mountain bike trails now in existence on the land, all to enhance the well-rounded environment of the property.  An example of this healthy commitment and forward-thinking view is the hosting of the EnduranceFest Sports and Music Festival. Three events: Road Cycling Time Trial, Mountain Bike Race, and Running Race will take place throughout the day on September 2nd, 2006 with event management provided by Racescapes Events, Inc. Participants will have the option to race all three events and prize money and awards will be given to the top 3 overall IRONMAN and IRONWOMAN who complete all three events in the fastest combined time and all who complete the three events will receive a special commemorative finisher's medal. There is also prize money in each of the individual
events with trophies and medals as well, so entrants may participate in just one event if they choose and then enjoy the food, drinks, and music. For more info www.endurancefest.com.

7-6-2006  New group rides on the south side…. From Epic Bikes:

There’s nothing like riding and/or training on the open back roads of the south side. For those of you who live south of the Airport, or live on the north side but would like to try something different, come south and train on the gentle rollers through areas like Mcdonough, Hampton and Brooks Georgia.

Epic Bikes (sponsoring bike shop for the Pro Racing Team Myogenesis) is sponsoring several rides throughout the week, each with a ride leader, varying distances, pace and skill levels. Epic is celebrating its one year anniversary. Over the past year we’ve watched them evolve from “the new kid on the block” to the “been around the block…..and then some” team. They have an awesome shop and an excellent maintenance crew. They’re very customer focused and will bend over backwards to help you with whatever your needs are, whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been racing for years.

They have a ride every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Each ride splits into 3 different groups (A, B and C), beginner level (C group) with an average pace of around 14mph, intermediate level (B group) with an average pace of around 16mph and strenuous level (A group) with an average pace of 19 – 20+mph. All three groups have a “No Drop” policy, however the A group will increase the pace on the last 5 mile straight away, and if you drop off the pace line, it’s a straight shot back to the shop.

The Monday and Wednesday rides start at 6:30pm and are 25 to 30 mile rides, for all 3 groups. The Saturday ride starts at 8:30am. The B and C group does a 25 – 30 mile ride (can vary depending on what the groups want to do) and the A group will do a long distance ride of 60+ miles.

So far the group size (A,B and C combined) varies from 20 – 40 riders, both men and women (we’re really starting to see more women riders), racers and non-racers, and all ages. No matter what your personal goals are, there’s a ride here that can help you train for them.

All rides leave from the parking lot at Epic Bikes. They’re address is 1816 Jonesboro Road, McDonough, Ga 30253 and phone number is 770-305-9590.

Directions: I-75 south to Exit 221 (Jonesboro Road exit), turn right, go to the first red light and turn right, go through the 1st stop sign and Epic is on your left.

We really want to see these rides grow and build a strong cycling presence for the south, so please come and join us. We are certain that you’ll enjoy the ride.

7-14-2006 RACE CHANGES BELOW!!
Sandy Springs Crit
Cycleworks, promoters of the John's Creek race, have announced that John's Creek will NOT take place this year. The crit will be in Sandy Springs on August 13 and will be part of the Green Tour. Sandy Springs is trying to become very cyclist friendly. See their website for information. Kudos to this new city! I've heard the course will be challenging. There is also a fun ride for those not inclined to race.

Two Hours from Anywhere Has Been CANCELLED The Two Hours from Anywhere in Murphy, NC has been cancelled. I received the following from the promoter. "We are sorry to say that yes this years race will not be held at  Murphy. Due to road closures, construction and employee volunteer burnout and poor sponsorship response we are not having this race this year but
we are looking at evaluating it for next year. Thanks Linda."

7-17-2006 Random Thoughts It's been a while since I posted some random thoughts. Somehow I got on the Summer Dining Rewards for the Buckhead Life Group Restaurants. The premise is that you get a gift card for one restaurant, eat there during a specific month, and then get another gift card for a different BLGR for the next month through September. The first card was for Pano and Pauls, an Atlanta institution for fine dining that mostly serves traditional Continental cuisine. My other half and I decided to go ahead and try the restaurants this summer. Pano and Pauls met our expectations for fine dining. Service was impeccable. When I didn't see any vegetarian items on the menu, they were more than happy to "whip something up" for me. (I don't eat meat other than occasional poultry, and I HATE seafood; never liked it). The vegetarian dish was delicious. My favorite part of the meal was the molten chocolate cake, a cake with semi-sweet dark chocolate sauce inside. I've heard Pano and Pauls is an "old man's pick up joint."

July's restaurant was Bluepointe, which is supposed to be American-Asian fusion, heavy on the fish. The "Bluepoint Salad" was a $10 wedge of lettuce with 2 small--very small--pieces of cheese and a little dressing. My dining partner's salad was a little better. They had one chicken dish--a chicken breast with some kind of tomato risotto. Although the entree was good, I could not quite tell what flavors were in there other than the tomato. The garlic mashed potatoes were a little too garlicky. I tried the vanilla ice cream for dessert, and it was light and flavorful. Service was a little slow, which may have been because our server appeared to be new. Once someone started to help him out, service was better. Next month is Kyma, which is a "contemporary Greek tavern." I am not a fan of Greek food at all, so I will probably wind up with a generic salad.

My favorite BLGR is Veni Vedi Vici in Midtown. My other half agrees with me. Of all the BLGR we have been to, it is his favorite as well. I love Italian, so I'm a little biased towards Italian cuisine. I will leave a review until I go there again as it has been a while since I ate there.

My other half and I decided to try Muss and Turners in Smyrna for lunch Saturday after the ride. Holy Moly! The food was really good, organic, and very gourmet, but we spent $27 for a side, 2 sandwiches, and 2 teas. I think we'll stick with the cyclist friendly (and budget friendly) Vinings NY Deli on Paces Ferry Rd. The average price is $7 for a side, sandwich, and a drink.

New Roswell Sat. Ride There is a new ride called the "40+ Ride" on Saturdays in Roswell. Meet at 7:30 am at the Roswell Park on Woodstock Rd. in Roswell for a moderately paced 20-25 miles. While not a no drop ride, I've been told that the group is courteous for newbies and regroups at several points. Information will be on Bike Roswell in a few days.

Thanks ATLBike! Thanks to Chris of ATLbike.org for organizing a great 60+ mile ride on Sunday from Cedartown out to Piedmont, AL and back. Some of you may recognize the names as towns on the Chief Ladiga trail and the Silver Comet. We only went on a short portion of the Chief Ladiga and none of the Silver Comet. There was a little gravel, some cyclocross, and some great rolling roads! See ATLBike.org for some of the best Atlanta west side riding!

Big Creek Breakins There have been several reports of car break ins at the Big Creek trail in Roswell this week. Don't forget to always put your valuables out of sight in your car.

To Sponsors and supporters of Cutters/L5 Flyers:

Cutter, Joey Rosskopf, is a member of the Southeastern United States Team competing at the Tour de l"Abitibi, an international 8 - stage UCI race in Val-d'Or, Quebec, Canada. The race is for 17 -18 year - old men. There are 25 six man teams equaling 150 riders at the start line.

There are three stages remaining.

Joey, racing age 17, is holding his own, having a good time trial, and finishing all mass start races in the peloton. Results are at: http://www.tourabitibi.qc.ca/, and at
http://www.cyclingnews.com/road.php?id=road/2006/jul06/abitibi06/abitibi064.

Crashes and mechanical problems are common. The Southeastern team had some mechanical problems in an early stage that knocked them from 10th to 22nd in the team standings, but nothing serious and they continue to climb up in the team standings.

This is a fantastic experience for these men. They are getting a glimpse of European style racing and meeting the top riders from around the world.

It would not be possible if you all had not laid the groundwork with your support and encouragement. Thank you for everything you have done to make this happen and for your continuing good wishes for the safety of the young men racing.

I will get some photos to you soon.

7-24-2006 L5 Flyer Cutters News From the L5Flyers Junior Team, the "Cutters."

Update 2: Today was so exciting. Joey got in the winning break and finished 9th. He moved up 23 places in the GC classification to 19th (out of 156 riders that started this event) The team moved from 17th place to 13th place. Joey went for King of the Mountain points on the second climb to prevent anyone else from getting points that would give them an advantage over Joey`s teammate, Andy Baker, who was to go for the points. (Unknown to Joey, Andy had crashed and was out). The break materialized from those KOM contestants. Joey won an interim time bonus sprint too. The initial break was 5, joined later by 2 and caught at the line by 6. They had over a minute on the peloton. Joey knew they had to keep the pace up to keep the peloton away. He said that he and a Japanese rider did most of the work. The team did not look too beat up and should be good to go tomorrow for a 98 km road race ending in a criterium. Andy was taken by ambulance from the course, was treated at area hospital and released. He has road rash on face, elbow, hip and probably elsewhere, but is taking it well and has returned to the school where the riders are being housed and fed.

Update 3: Today was 98 km road race ending in a three lap criterium. It came down to a peloton sprint. Joey and Chris Hong of the Siemens Team finished in the peloton with same time as winner. Joey moved up to 18th in GC. Our team, the US National Team and a Canadian team worked to keep pace high and preserve the GC of their respective riders. The tactic worked. The SE team dropped from 12th to 13th in team standings because a couple of riders were behind the peloton. Our rider injured yesterday is fine, just abrasions, some nasty, but if he had a choice he would have raced today. Instead, he rode in the team car with Coach John Kelly, Mechanic Ryan Walsh and me. The car caravan is not so bad. You get frequent radio updates of the action at the front of the peloton.

Tomorrow is the last day and is an afternoon criterium in downtown Val-d`Or. There are thousands of spectators. They beat on the sponsor`s signs hanging from the fencing each time riders come through the start-finish.

Crowds are in the thousands.

Joey is a bit apprehensive about tomorrow. He usually loves crits, but the huge number of riders and the aggressiveness of the riders has shaken his confidence. I will be glad when it is over and all are safe. It is not easy being a parent here.

I don`t recall mentioning to all that Joey was selected for Olympic Training Camp in Colorado Springs, August 6 - 11. They will test him there to see if he has potential to continue or should take up croquet.

Ken Rosskopf, Cutters/L5 Flyers Racing

Dog Days Crit Cancelled From Chad Strickland with L5Flyers Management: "We regretfully announce that the Dog Days Criterium in Grant Park is being canceled. An unfortunate mix of circumstances has lead to the cancellation of the event this year. We know that this is a special race to many and we sincerely apologize for the late notice. We have been working up until what we feel is the last moment to make the event happen, but it is simply not possible.

We are committed to bringing the event back next year and plan to make it bigger and better than ever before.

All racing for the weekend is not lost however, the Sandy Springs Cycling Classic, presented by Team Cycleworks, will be held on Sunday, August 13 in Sandy Springs. This is a new race with a great course and large payout. For more information: www.teamcycleworks.net

Thank you for your support.

Rome Georgia Cup Photos I was at the Rome GA Cup Crit on Saturday. I got several hundred photos of the Women's and Cat. 5 crits. I'd intended to do the rest of the crits, but very dark conditions and rain forced me to put the camera away.  You can see the photos here. As always, photos are available for purchase. :)

Before the Cat. 5 race in Rome. I don't know, so don't ask me.

OTR Cycling debuted the Strenflex Racing Golf Cart with bike rack at the Rome Georgia Cup.

7-25-2006 GIHP Celebration The Georgia International Horse Park will have a celebration of its 10 year anniversary on Saturday Aug. 5th in the Special Events field. "Dreamer" starring Dakota Fanning will be shown at dark. I didn't see any cycling events on the schedule.

Gaps Service Project From Becky Grant: "Hello Cyclist Friends - It's that time again! Time for some biking in the beautiful mountains that we are so fortunate to have access to, plus a chance to show our appreciation for the use of those roads by a litter pick-up for our specified section (adopted by "Atlanta Bicyclists" -- see attached picture) near the Rockpile. Here's the details...
Who: Anyone looking for some great exercise, plus an opportunity to give back to the local mountain community
What: Ride from the Rockpile, then roadside cleanup for ~1/2 hour afterward.
For the ride, people may choose alternate routes, but the proposed ride is the ALS 50-mile route backwards (see map:
http://alsride.org/Map_FabFiftyWithRestStops.pdf)plus Woody's up and back for a total mileage around 65 miles. There is an optional "add-on" of 12 miles if Craigs Gap and Booger Hollow are added (I can provide more details if interested).
The cleanup can occur whenever people finish riding --We'll make a plan before the ride starts as to who will cover which section so that it gets done as quickly as possible. Free cookies for all that help with the cleanup! (and beer if you get there before it runs out - the ultimate bribery) Then we can celebrate afterward with a post-ride meal in Dahlonega.
When: This Sunday, July 30th, rolling from the Rockpile at 9am. There will be no ride if it's raining - If that happens, we'll schedule for another day.
Where: The Rockpile, a.k.a. Stonepile, north of Dahlonega at the intersection of GA-60 and US-19.
Why: To enjoy some beautiful scenery, while at the same time getting a great workout (plus guilt-free food/beverages afterward!)
If you have some extra gloves that you could bring for the litter pickup, that would be helpful. Our previous cleanup outing had an article written up in the Dahlonega Nugget newspaper! I'll share it with you this weekend. Hope to see you Sunday, Becky hillseeker@gmail.com.

Southside Rides From Epic bikes: New group rides on the south side….

The Saturday ride starts at 7:30am for Group A, and 8:30am for Groups B and C. The B and C groups do a 25 – 30 mile ride (can vary depending on what the groups want to do) and the A group will do a long distance ride of 60+ miles. The start time for the Saturday ride will change during the Winter months.

7-26-2006 Wired To Win Does anyone remember that IMAX movie that was being shot at the Tour De France around Tyler Hamilton? When he got busted at the Olympics, they switched the focus to other riders. I've heard that it is scheduled to open at Fernbank on April 14, 2007.

Jennifer Ewing--In Memorium A fellow cyclist was murdered on the Silver Comet on July 25th. There are too many details. www.11alive.com, www.wsbtv.com, and the other local news outlets have stories on their website.

Jennifer, may you rest in peace. My heart goes out to your family and friends.

Everyone, please be careful out there. Be aware of your surroundings. Carry your cell phone on your person, not in your seatpack. Let someone know where you are going and what time you will be home. Tell them to call the police if they don't hear from you. Not everything can be prevented, but we can try.

7-27-2006 Injured I crashed Thursday night before the Bellyache pretty hard. I hurt my hand, and it is hard to type. Don't know if it's broken. I have a few submissions waiting for publication. It will take me a few days. No typing for me for a few days. Appreciate the understanding.---Trish

Sandy Springs Crit News I have heard a confirmed rumor that the special guest starter for the Sandy Springs crit will be SAUL RAISIN!

Trail work parties typically last about 4-6 hours. Plan to hike in unless otherwise posted (or check with coordinator if in doubt), so wear comfortable but sturdy boots. 7-31-2006 Sandy Springs Crit News The Cycleworks team will be making a contribution to the Shepherd Spinal Center between the men's and women's pro races at the Sandy Springs crit. Raisin Hell bracelets to benefit Shepherds will be available at the event, and donations can be made starting early next week. I'll have a link up when I get it from Team Cycleworks.
