Bear Creek/Mountaintown Work Party From SORBA EMBA: "Bear Creek and Mountaintown Creek Work Party Saturday September 8th at 10:am Meet on Gates Chapel Road at the bottom of Bear Creek EMBA will be there with Larry Thomas the land manager that controls Bear Creek and Mountaintown Creek. This is an important work party in that we are to show Mr. Thomas we care about the trails they have and want to help keep them up and OPEN. We are hoping that if enough people show we can try and split work between Bear Creek and Mountaintown Creek. As a lot of people know Mountaintown Creek is in jeopardy of being closed and we need to show some solidarity to the rangers that we love those trails. Mr. Thomas has stated most of all the work parties he has had, the only ones showing up to work are HIKERS and EQUESTRIANS. We need to make a statement with this work party that the MOUNTAIN BIKERS count"

8-8-2007 Saul Raisin to Return to Competition From Medalist Sports: GREENVILLE, S.C. (August 7, 2007) – Over 150 of the country’s best professional cyclists will compete for two national titles in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains this Labor Day weekend. One of those professional cyclists has already won the race of his life and will use the 2007 Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championships as his comeback from a life-threatening injury.

Medalist Sports announced today that Saul Raisin, a 24-year-old native of Dalton, Ga., will return to professional cycling after a 16-month absence and compete in the first day of the dual championships, the USA Cycling Professional Individual Time Trial Championship presented by The Cliffs. It is yet to be determined if Raisin will enter the field for Sunday’s USA Cycling Professional Road Race Championship. Raisin received medical clearance on July 19 to resume bicycle racing.

“My official return will be when I pin on my number and line up (for the ITT). It will make me feel great,” said Raisin from his home in Dalton, Ga. “I am working very close with my coaches doing very specific training (for Greenville).”

Raisin began racing at the age of 13 on mountain bikes. He later switched to road cycling and signed with French-based professional cycling team Credit Agricole in 2005. That first year as a professional, Raisin finished 13th in the Tour of Austria and won the GE Best Young Rider award jersey at the top-rated Tour de Georgia. The Georgia native started strong in the 2006 campaign by winning a climbing stage of the Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia and finishing 17th in the Amgen Tour of California.

On April 4, 2006 in the first stage of the Circuit de la Sarthe in France, he crashed three kilometers from the finish, landing on his head and breaking his clavicle and hip. Two days later, Raisin suffered bleeding around his brain and lapsed into a coma. The brain damage caused significant weakness on the left side of his entire body and temporary brain damage. He then spent time at the Shepherd Spinal Center in Georgia for therapy, where he regained the ability to perform basic functions such as eating, talking and walking.

“Before his crash, Saul was on the road to becoming America’s next cycling phenomenon. Now he’s one of more than 5.3 million people in the United States who are living with disability as a result of traumatic brain injury. That hasn’t stopped him from believing he can win the world’s toughest bicycle race, the Tour de France. Now others are starting to believe him, too,” said Dave Shields, author of a new book about Raisin’s life.

Tour de Life: From Coma to Competition is a book written by Shields and Raisin, which will debut to the public the weekend of the Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championships. The 278-page hardback book recaps Raisin’s battle to recapture his promising career as a professional cyclist. In March 2007, Raisin returned to his bike to lead the inaugural Raisin Hope Ride. Over 500 cyclists joined Raisin in his hometown of Dalton to raise money for The Shepherd Center, Camp Twin Lakes, The Brain Injury Association of Georgia and the USA Cycling Development Foundation. Last year Raisin and his parents traveled to Greenville to help promote the Palmetto Peloton Project.

“It means more than words can describe,” Raisin added about returning to Greenville, but this time to compete in the Championships. “(Last year) I gave a speech before the ride (Palmetto Peloton Project) telling everyone how much it meant me. Everyone including myself was crying. It meant a lot to everyone. It was my first organized group ride after my accident, definitely a bench mark.”

Top-ranked athletes expected to join Raisin at the Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championships will be announced soon, with rosters for both events posted at the official website (www.usacyclingchampionships.com). Close to 70 athletes are expected for the 18-mile USA Cycling Professional Individual Time Trial Championship, presented by The Cliffs, and a field of over 100 is expected for the 110-mile USA Cycling Professional Road Race Championship. Professionals will compete for over $60,000 in prize money. The events are sanctioned by USA Cycling, the governing body for the sport of cycling in the United States, and managed by Medalist Sports.

8-10-2007 Roswell Ride From Eric Broadwell/Bike Roswell  "To All,
The biggest complaint I hear no matter where there is a ride is the public urination. I received an email from the City Administrator that she is receiving complaints about people peeing before the ride on Thursday night at City Hall. I also requested that we work proactively and asked that the bathrooms in City Hall be available until 6:30. Remember the police station is the red brick building that you see on the other side of the street from city hall and they have a good window view of the parking lot.
Sincerely, Eric Broadwell"

8-13-2007 Cyclist Attacked on the Comet From Trailexpress.com: "MAN ATTACKED ON THE TRAIL" Cobb County Police reported that a lone male cyclist was mugged (beaten up and robbed) at about 4:15 PM Sunday, August 5th, on the Trail where it crosses Anderson Mill Road (approximately the 5 mile mark). The reported assailants were three young black men; one of them was later caught and arrested. The injured man apparently was treated at a local hospital and released."

OTR Cycling My team finally had our 2007 photos this weekend. Thanks to our team prez, Bridesmaid, for hosting the summer pool party!

OTR Cycling Team 2007

Century Review I did the Chattooga Century on Sat. It was really, really hot! A few smaller groups left as early as 6:45 to beat the heat. Since I was doing the metric, I left with the mas start at 8:00. I have been feeling terrible all week, and Chattooga was no exception. I got dropped by the A group as soon as the hills started about mile 5. Of course, there were only about a dozen people in the A pack; the racer types were in Dahlonega. I got picked up quickly by the "B" pack and hung with them until the second rest stop, where hot, homemade chocolate chip cookies and Gatorade snowcones awaited. The B's were doing the 100, so I rolled out by myself and got picked up by the Velo Vixens and their Vixen groupies a few miles later. I rode with them til the finish.

This century is very well supported, probably among the best 2-3 of any I've even done. Each year just gets better. They have rolling SAG trucks with plenty of room for riders and bikes. The rest stops are well stocked. Like I said, at the second rest stop at a church there are always hot chocolate chip cookies and Gatorade snow cones. There was also plenty of ice to cool riders off at each rest stop. The route is beautiful and very low traffic. There is only one major climb, a 3 mile gentle climb up the GA side of Lookout Mountain at about mile 40 on the century route. There is only 4500 feet of accumulated climbing on the century. On the metric I'd guess there is about 3100 feet of climbing. Pizza and cold drinks await you at the finish.

8-14-2007 Cross News From the Georgia Cross Series: 2007 Georgia Cyclocross Schedule

The Georgia Cross Series is back again in 2007 and expanded to include two new venues: Blue Ridge and Dahlonega. The series of Sunday races will again include 9 race categories including Womens, Masters, and Juniors. The schedule for the 2007 cross series is tentatively as follows:

10-21-2007 Conyers - GIHP
10-28-2007 Winder - Fort Yargo
11-04-2007 Monroe - Criswell Park
11-11-2007 Macon - Sandy Beach
11-18-2007 Augusta/State - ASU Complex
12-02-2007 Blue Ridge - Fannin County Park
12-09-2007 Dahlonega/Finale - High School

For more information check out www.georgia-cross.com.

8-16-2007 New Team for O'Neill From Cyclingnews.com: "The eight-time Australian time trial champion Nathan O'Neill confirmed to Cyclingnews on Sunday that he has signed with the BMC team for 2008, just after winning the Tour of Elk Grove overall with a blistering opening prologue. This comes with the news that Tony Cruz will be riding for the second-year team as well.

The addition of O'Neill should vastly improve the general classification and time trial potential of the team, which has failed to make much in the way of appearances on the steps of major US podiums this year. O'Neill has netted multiple titles this year, including the Tour of the Gila and a repeat at the Mt. Hood Classic. He also rode strong on the tough Brasstown Bald stage at this year's Tour de Georgia, finishing fourth.  Not having the fire power of a team like Health Net-Maxxis will make his leadership role more difficult, but the Aussie, who makes his home in Georgia, seemed excited about the new prospects for 2008. And if he keeps his winning time trials like he has this year, the prospects for his new team should be exciting too"

Saul Book Signing Trish's Note: This will be in Dahlonega.  "Saul Raisin will be at the Bear Creek Bicycle Company (Old Dalton Bicycle) on August 29th, 4-8 p.m. to sign his new book
Tour de Life. He would love to see everyone. It is at 402 North Park Drive, phone number 706-260-2733. Look forward to seeing you there."

8-17-2007 More Winter Rides From Team Cycleworks: "For those interested Team Cycleworks will again be organizing and leading the KSU/Beyond Allatoona ride. This ride will commence Saturday November 3rd at 9 am and, due to last year's response, efforts are in place to make this ride year round.  There may be slight changes in the parking situation and a slight route adjustment as well. Stay tuned to www.sadlebred. com and the southern bicycle league's website for details. See y'all out there! Tim Smith, President-North GA Cycling"

CYCLOCROSS CLINIC!!! Kari Linder and I will again be teaching several cyclocross clinics this fall. This is the first. Watch for another one in Sept.

Co-ed CX Clinic - Sunday Aug 26th!!

When: Sunday, August 26
8:30 am - 11:00 am

Where: Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers. Meet in the gravel parking lot at the MTB trail head

Note: This is Co-ed so everyone is welcome, we will split into groups to work on skills, the clinic is free, but parking is $5.

Are you wondering what this Cyclocross stuff is all about? We have the perfect clinic for you!!

Please join Kari Lindner & Co. for a beginnners cyclocross clinic and learn to dismount, hurdle barriers, carry your bike and remount. (Yes! You can do all of this!) We will discuss cyclocross bike setup and rules for the races. You may practice and compete on a cyclocross bike or a mtb bike, as long as there are no bar ends. This is all set in a co-ed environment that is relaxed and full of encouragement. This is also a great clinic for second season cyclocrossers to 'brush up' on 'merging with the bike'. We will have knowledgeable racers to help each group work on these skills and Trish Albert will give an in depth review of cross frames and set-up. So, bring your questions.

Come join us and see what all the buzz is about! CYCLOCROSS RAWKS!!!!

(please bring mtb or cyclocross bike, helmet, plenty of water to stay hydrated and a snack in case you get the munchies)

Tips: Remove bar ends before the clinic

Removing bottle cages before the clinics will make it easier to lift your bike. (we are always near water)

Pick your hardtail over your full suspension if you have a choice. (if you don’t ....who cares! We’ll have a blast anyway!)

Wear mtb shoes instead of road shoes and lycra instead of baggies if you have them. (so you don’t get caught on the seat)

(don’t let any of this scare you, as tennis shoes worked just fine for a couple people last year!)

Sunday Silk Sheets Parking  The Campbellton United Methodist Church (Silk Sheets) has their homecoming celebration this Sunday (August 19) from 10-2:00pm. Please don't park there during that time.

They emphasized cyclists are welcome to use their lot any other time. Normally their Sunday service runs from 11-12:30 and they don't mind a few cars their even then, especially after the service starts.

If you are planning on riding there Sunday good alternatives are the recreation center on Rico Rd or Cochran Mill Park.

8-20-2007 Breaks in at GIHP From the SORBA forum. Be careful at the GIHP and don't leave valuables in the car.  "**** and I were riding Conyers (Horse Park) this afternoon somewhere between 4 and 6 pm and our car was broken into. They broke the front door window, as well as punching in the lock. The only things they took were our bags (with some clothes and riding stuff) and ****'s wallet. Not really high dollar value on anything, but the outcome is a terrific pain. (You know the drill... cancel everything, replace everything, call the insurance company, get to a body shop.)

The police that responded stated that they hadn't had an incident like this at the Horse Park before, but there had been a string of car break-ins in the Conyers area in the last month or so. Just a friendly warning to anyone who rides out there."

US Pro Rumors You heard it here first! I heard a rumor that Tyler Hamilton will be racing at the US Pro TT and Road Race in Greenville, SC Labor Day weekend.

Intown Ride Schedule From Todd Fryburger:

Recognizing that Summer is fleeting, and the days are getting shorter, it is with heavy heart that I set forth the official Fall schedule for the “In-Town Classics”.

Be advised that, as 2007 marked the advent of a new schedule for Daylight Saving Time (DST), the clocks will “fall back” one week later than in past years. Hence, DST will end at 02:00 AM ET on Sunday 11/04/07 - this is when you will set your clock back one hour. DST will return again in the Spring at 02:00 AM ET on Sunday 03/09/08, meaning the “off-season” will now only be 18 weeks.

When setting the schedule, we’ve always tried to maintain at least 90 minutes between the start of a given ride and sunset. Last night, the sunset was at 08:26 PM ET, the same as it was during the second week of May, and sunset is about one minute earlier each evening going forward.

As such, by the powers vested in me by the tribal elders, I hereby set forth the following decree:

Week of 09/10/07 - Start times for the Sandy Springs (Tuesday), Peachtree Battle (Wednesday) and Chastain (Thursday) rides move from 06:30 PM ET to 06:15 PM ET. The Sandy Springs ride moves to “short options”, meaning the ride will no longer traverse the Vinings “three humps”.

Week of 09/24/07 - Start times for the Sandy Springs (Tuesday), Peachtree Battle (Wednesday) and Chastain (Thursday) rides move from 06:15 PM ET to 06:00 PM ET.

Week of 10/08/07 - Start times for the Sandy Springs (Tuesday), Peachtree Battle (Wednesday) and Chastain (Thursday) rides move from 06:00 PM ET to 05:45 PM ET.

Week of 10/22/07 - Start times for the Sandy Springs (Tuesday), Peachtree Battle (Wednesday) and Chastain (Thursday) rides move from 05:45 PM ET to 05:30 PM ET, and will remain so until the end of DST.

Week of 10/29/07 - This will be the final week for the Sandy Springs (Tuesday), Peachtree Battle (Wednesday) and Chastain (Thursday) rides - all start times remain at 05:30 PM ET.

Sunday 11/04/07 - DST ends at 02:00 AM ET - set your clock back one hour.

Saturday 11/10/07 - The Tucker Ride (Saturday) assumes “Winter hours”, hence the start time moves from 09:00 AM ET to 10:00 AM ET.

Sunday 03/09/08 - DST begins at 02:00 AM ET - set your clock forward one hour.

Saturday 03/15/07 - The Tucker Ride (Saturday) assumes “Summer hours”, hence the start time moves from 10:00 AM ET to 09:00 AM ET.

As always, the “Secret Handshake Sunday Ride” led by Gregg Limbird will start at 09:00 AM ET, regardless of season, because “the Sunday Ride changes for no one”.

I will leave it to others to set forth decrees with respect to the Fall schedule for the “Buckhead Church Ride” and “Stone Mountain Pizza Ride” on Thursday nights, as well as the Sunday “Airport Ride” and weeknight rides during the Winter.

8-21-2007 Northlake and Pizza Ride Schedules Summer days are sadly becoming shorter. Please save this email for reference…. Daylight Saving Time (DST), the clocks will “fall back” one week later than in past years. DST will end Sunday 11/04/07. DST will return again in the Spring on Sunday 03/09/08, shortening the winter season to 18 weeks.

In order to have enough daylight to ride Tuesdays and Thursdays- approx 90 minutes is needed. The sunset will be 8:19 tonight, and will continue to set a minute (or more) earlier per day.

Week of 08/20/07 Start times for Northlake (Tuesday) and Pizza (Thursday) will be 6:30 PM. The Northlake ride will be shorter- we will do one small counterclockwise 4.75 mile loop and one intermediate counterclockwise loop (normal 7 mile loop that we typically do 2 times). The Pizza loop will be one large clockwise 8.75 mile loop (normally we have been doing almost 2 of these loops)

Week of 09/10/07 - sunsets 7:40s- Start times for Northlake (Tuesday) and Pizza (Thursday) will move to 6:15 PM. The Northlake ride- we will do one small counterclockwise 4.75 mile loop and continue with one intermediate loop. The Pizza loop will be one large clockwise 8.75 mile loop.

Week of 09/24/07 - sunsets 7:20s- Start times for Northlake (Tuesday) and Pizza (Thursday) will move to 6:00 PM. The Northlake ride- we will do one small counterclockwise 4.75 mile loop and continue with one intermediate loop. The Pizza loop will be one large clockwise 8.75 mile loop.

Week of 10/08/07 - sunsets 7:00s- Start times for Northlake (Tuesday) and Pizza (Thursday) will move to 5:45 PM. The Northlake ride- we will do one counterclockwise intermediate loop. The Pizza loop will be one large clockwise 8.75 mile loop.

Week of 10/22/07 - sunsets 6:50s- Start times for Northlake (Tuesday) and Pizza (Thursday) will stay at 5:45 PM. The Northlake ride- we will do one counterclockwise inside small loop (4.75 miles). The Pizza loop will be one counterclockwise inside small loop (4.75 miles). .

Week of 10/29/07 - sunsets 6:40s- This will be the final week for the Northlake (Tuesday) and Pizza (Thursday) rides - all start times and ride routes remain at 5:45 PM.

Cycling Study Subjects Needed "The results of this study to date have been promising so I have
received funding through the fall. If anyone is interested in participating in this study please contact me via email darren_triplett@yahoo.com Georgia State is currently conducting a study investigating how 2
different carbohydrate beverages affect cycling performance. The study is looking for male subjects, aged 18-44 who ride 60 miles at a time on a consistent basis. The study requires that you come in on four separate occasions. First visit - VO2max test and body composition. You will be given
your  VO2max results so you can apply them to your training. Second visit - 30 mile simulated ride during which you will receive only water. 3rd and 4th visit - 60 mile simulated ride during which you'll be given one of the CHO beverages. This type of protocol has been done quite often in the past.

online registration agent. You can see the cup listed here: http://www.racelistings.com/register/events/flyer.asp?ID=604
Sponsorships are still available and encouraged. A special sponsor paddock with reserved seating and lunch will be held at the finish line race day. The collectible race program will be printed and available
online as a pdf file. Contact me if you would like to be a supporter, large or small! Once again this Carolina Cup promises to be another memorable classic; an exciting bike race, a day in the beautiful park and a reunion of all the folks who have made this event their own over the many years!

8-29-2007 Bicycle South Ride From Bicycle South:  Please join us on our FINAL RIDE of the season. Our last Bicycle South Ride to Stone Mountain is Sunday, September 9th, at 9 AM. Invite your friends and family for this relaxed group ride out to the mountain and back. There will be
free refreshments after the ride featuring our famous Black Bean Dip and Brian’s wonderful Spinach Dip. There are two options – ride the PATH trail with Fred at a very easy pace or opt for the slightly faster pace riding on the streets. This is a great ride for folks just starting out or someone new to the area. Good for kids, too – as long as they ride a bike with 24-inch wheels. Anything smaller and they won’t be able to keep up. Come ride with us on September 9th; there won’t be another store ride until March 2008!
