12-1-2007  Blue Ridge Cyclocross This Weekend! Game on in Blue Ridge this weekend. After a great race in Augusta for the State Championships, GA Cross moves on for the sixth race of the season in Blue Ridge GA. The Augusta race saw a record turnout for Augusta , up over 40% from the year before, and some great racing including GA Cross racers showing up on local newscasts. What other bicycles race can you do and be on television? Major thanks go to all the guys in Augusta for putting on a great event.

Chicopee Ticketing Warning From a post on Sorba.org: "With Winter deer culls occurring the center is concerned about riders being out there during hunting. Of course, we’re all aware of the issue where the gate was torn down 2 years ago. This put SORBA on notice. The park commission finally decided to only allow night rides that are organized by SORBA. While these have been going well, efforts by SORBA to get the word out about illegal night riding have been futile. Mainly because many of these riders are not members and therefore have little incentive or concern for the park. Unfortunately, this puts even our organized rides in danger. The police have been asked to start writing tickets to illegal riders. This means anyone seen illegally riding will be ticketed even if they don’t park in the park. The automatic gate at the front of Elachee Drive has been reset for Winter hours and now will close at 6:30pm. If you are seen with lights on you will probably be assumed to be night riding. Please try to plan your afternoon rides to get you off the trail before dark. Do not carry lights with you “just in case” as you may be construed to be night riding. Additionally, the police will also monitor the park for rain closures and will assist the Gainesville Chapter with closing the trail during inclement weather. We as a chapter welcome the ticketing of illegal riders. We’re confident that SORBA members will not be among those ticketed and Elachee is aware that those illegally riding are not likely SORBA members."

12-4-2007 Georgia Tech Lab Needs Wheel  The cycling lab here at Georgia Tech still has no funding but still requires parts so we can make progress into using cycling as a possible rehab tool for amputees. We need a good quality 700c rear wheel that can be trued and stay true. We have been attempting to use something of lesser quality but this really hasn't worked out well. The wheel is used in a stationary trainer and drives a resistance unit. Turns out, if the wheel isn't true or falls out of true during an experiment, it sets up a vibration in the system that creates variability in the resistance while completely obliterating quality
data from our force pedals. If anyone has a spare rear wheel somewhere that will accept a 9speed cassette that we could borrow or have, please let me know. Or, if anyone has a 32 spoke rim that I can have, I can build up a new wheel on one of my spare hubs. Any help would be appreciated. 12-5-2007 Bean Team Roster The Bean Team/Jittery Joes has announced their 2008 roster. The Jittery Joe’s Professional Cycling Team has finalized its roster for next season by keeping six riders from 2007 and adding five new riders. Headlining the returning squad is Aussie captain Trent Wilson and American Neil Shirley. Neil surprised the cycling world at the end of the 2007 season by out sprinting Freddy Rodriguez for the last podium spot at the USPRO Road Race Championships behind winner Levi Leipheimer and runner-up George Hincapie. Also returning to the squad is Oregon’s powerhouse Evan Elken, Australian sprinter Cody Stevenson, Durango native Matt Shriver and Georgia’s young talent Tim Henry. Returning to the team after spending a few years with TIAA-Cref and BMC is Chad Hartley from the Chicago area. Chad raced for The Bean Team in the first Tour of Georgia in 2003 where he was second by only 5 seconds to Saul Raisin for the Best Young Rider’s jersey. Jonathan Cantwell and Ryan Sullivan continue the Australian tradition on the Jittery Joe’s squad—Jonathan spent a bit of time racing for the LaGrange team in California this year and Ryan (brother of Toyota-United’s Sean) spent his time honing his racing skills in Europe.
Two American neo-pros round out the roster. Jared Barrilleaux from San Luis Obispo, CA and Ben Kneller from Durango, CO will bring youth and strength to the team.

12-6-2007 WBL News

1.) We are in need of a sag driver this weekend. If any takers respond to this email. Benefits: Guaranteed $50 minimum, we provide the sag car and gas, free entry fee for a friend, many rewards in heaven.

2.) The interactive map and a text map with exquisite (best ever) directions are on the site on the home page. Print the text directions and put them in yo pocket. It's a guaranteed safety measure. This week's adventure, the Rongway to Monroe Route, is 80 miles. There are no sprints, and a store stop 1/2 way in Monroe. Please read the ride outline at www.winterbikeleague.com

3.) This week's sponsor, www.jbrownco.net, will give away $25 bucks to 4 lucky souls before the ride. Sign in, get a number, and the drawing will be before the ride. Jess brown is our web wizard, and he should be yours too.

4.) Parking - more parking is available in the 4-story building at the corner of Hancock and Pulaski. This is directly across the street from the front of Snow Tire.

5.) Peeing - There is a bakery at Hot Corner, 1 block up Washington Street from Sunshine. Go buy and coffee or baked item and pee in the bathroom before ride. Snow Tire folks are complaining about us peeing outside. I wonder how early man solved this riddle? Probably peed in the pool.

6.) Average speed last week was a comfortable 19 mph. The WBL will strive to keep it around 18-20 mph. Please work on your smoothness in the back half of the pack. A sudden acceleration in the middle will increase tenfold by the time the ripple reaches the rear. A pack drover will always pedal, fast down the hill and will let up on the uphill. We may sail along on the flats. The point is to be smooth and steady. This is always a work in progress. Remember to stay 2 abreast at all times, especially when departing Sunshine, and especially when cutting through small cities, which we love to do.

7.) we head out of town on Prince Avenue this week. If we split, the back group does not have to hammer. Once we are free of the lights, the front group will slow or stop until we are all as one.

Georgia Riders Representing!! (Apologies to Bdickman) The Georgia Riders represented our state with class, dignity, and SPEED at this year's Cyclocross National Championships this past week in Kansas City, KS

Me- I finished well in the Women's B race and 23rd in the Master Women 30-34. I had a great ride in the B class and was thrilled with my performance. Anyone that has been reading the reports on Velonews and Cyclingnews knows that it was snowy and icy, something we don't see that much here in Georgia. This was my last race for OTR Cycling. Thanks for all of your support this year guys!!

Natasha Cowie (Velo Bella), now living in Boulder, CO, finished 4th in her group u23 and 35 overall out of 70 in women's Elite Race.

Rob Kuhn (HUP United) was 6th in the Men's B 40+ with a fantastic race. He also recovered nicely from an early rolled tire in his Master's race.

Kim Sawyer (BMW-Bianchi) finish 7th the Master Women 35-39 in her highest placing ever in Master. Kim also had a strong ride in the Elite Women.

Daryl Sawyer (Van Dessel) was 17th out of over 170 riders in the Master Men 35-39! Daryl spent the rest of his weekend in support of the other racers. Thanks Daryl!

Jansen Linder (GTC) in his finish 14th in Junior 13-14. Watch out for Jansen in the future!

James Behning (GTC) & Brendan Sullivan (E-Mag Solutions) for their finishes in the 45+ category in epic conditions.

Oscar Clark (FFCC) was 16th in a huge and competitive Under 23 field as well as 32nd in an even larger Collegiate Men's race.

Jed Schneider (Sonic/Jittery Joes) on his 7th place finish in 30-35. David Howe (Camp Highland) raced strong and ended his race with a quick trip to the beer tent. Amen! Thank heavens for the beer tents at cyclocross races!

Torre Smitherman (GTC) in the Master Men 55-59 on this Podium placing of 5th! Great job, Torre! We are so proud of you! Dan Coy in the same age group was crashed out by another racer shortly after the starts but rallied and finished strong.

Men's Elite Tim Barrett, Nathan Wyatt, Lucas Livermon, and Charles Pendry. You guys had a tough race. Way to go!

Thanks to the Georgia Support Crew--Kari and Shey Linder. Kari-your cheers were the best and really helped me through my injuries in the masters race. Shey--you pitted for so many riders. Thanks! Adam--thank you for dragging the tents and the heater to Kansas City. You know we love your heater! :) It saved us from hypothermia during Saturday's wind and snow storm.

Bicycle Bandit The Bicycle Bandit has struck again! He uses a bicycle to get away from the robberies.

Stealing is Not Cool Stealing is not Cool. I have noticed a few of my photos popping up on the Internet on various cycling websites and blogs. All photos are copyright Trish Albert/Southeasterncycling.com AND MAY NOT BE USED WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. I charge a very nominal fee for my photos for web use. (It's $5--really cheap! Other photographers charge $25 or more and give you a low resolution copy. I give you the original photo!)

Why do I charge? I have expenses associated with taking photos--the Smugmug site, gas for my car, batteries for my camera and flash, other equipment expenses, my time standing around for hours taking pictures, etc. I don't do cycling photography to make a living (I have a day job for that), but I do need to recoup my costs. If you want to use a photo on your website or on your blog, please contact me at sttarlite@hotmail.com to obtain permission. Please note that fees for commercial use such as a bike shop, bike manufacturer, and other commercial uses are higher than blog fees.

12-23-2007 2007 Thanks! I have to thank my wonderful sponsors for 2007! To OTR Cycling and Ace Industries, thanks for the last 3 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed riding for the team and wish you the best in the future. (Of course, I'll still be involved since I'm on the club's Board of Directors).

To Boneshaker Bicycles, Thank you Randy and Hamlet for keeping all of my bikes going in 2007. Without you two, I would not be able to race as much as I have. You are the best mechanics out there! Randy--thanks for sponsoring me for the last 5 years. I look forward to 2008!

To Gu: Thanks for keeping me fueled in 2007! There is nothing like a Vanilla or Orange Gu to boost my energy during a race.

Brake Issues I have to thank Bear Creek Bicycles in Dalton for rescuing me on Saturday after the Snake Creek Gap TT preride. They were able to fix my rear brake after the spring and brake pads popped out. Check them out if you are in Dalton.

What Did YOU Get for Christmas? Anything bike related? I have to thank my wonderful husband for getting me a navigation GPS for my car. No more getting lost going to races, a new trailhead, or to meet my friends for lunch in a different city! I really could have used it in Kansas as I got lost a few times! They do not believe in street signs out there. I also got a book a sports photography, a new mini digital camera (yes, I have 3 now), and some other stuff. The best thing was--a Christmas at home without traveling! I've been riding a lot and getting started on my base miles for next year.
