Salisbury Community Park, Salisbury NC This is an event for anyone that has never done a cyclo-cross race but wants to give it a try. I have a full time job, train, race, run a team, have a husband I like doing non-cycling things with, etc. in addition to this website. Cyclocross Clinic Sept. 15 When: Saturday, September 15th 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Where: International Horse Park gravel parking lot at the MTB trail head

Note: This is Co-ed so everyone is welcome, we will split into groups to work on skills, the clinic is
free, but parking is $5.

Are you wondering what this Cyclocross stuff is all about? We have the perfect clinic for you!!

Please join Kari Lindner, Trish Albert & Co. for a beginnners cyclocross clinic and learn to dismount,
hurdle barriers, carry your bike and remount. (Yes! You can do all of this!) We will discuss cyclocross bike setup and rules for the races. You may practice and compete on a cyclocross bike or a mtb bike, as long as there are no bar ends. This is all set in a co-ed environment that is relaxed and full of encouragement. This is also a great clinic for second season cyclocrossers to 'brush up' on 'merging with the bike'. We will have knowledgeable racers to help each group work on these skills and Trish will give an in depth review of cross frames and set-up.  So, bring your questions.

Come join us and see what all the buzz is about! CYCLOCROSS RAWKS!!!!

(please bring mtb or cyclocross bike, helmet, plenty of water to stay hydrated and a snack in case you get the munchies)

Tips --Remove bar ends before the clinic
--Removing bottle cages before the clinics will make it easier to lift your bike. (we are always near
water)
--Pick your hardtail over your full suspension if you have a choice. (if you don’t ....who cares! We’ll
have a blast anyway!)
--Wear mtb shoes instead of road shoes and lycra instead of baggies if you have them. (so you don’t
get caught on the seat)
--(don’t let any of this scare you, just come as you are and learn something new)

Promoters Promoters, if you send me your race to list in the calendar, please have some details for me such as a website for flyer. If I don't have any information on your race, how can potential racers get the details?

Cross Races I have posted the Cross schedules for Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama. It almost looks like there are more cross races than road races this year!

Ride Time Changes The following rides will start at 6:15 for the rest of Sept. and will begin at 6:00 in October: Vinings Monday Night Recovery Ride, Vinings Wednesday Silver Lake Loop, Thursday Buckhead Bellyache.

Fruschi Retiring My favorite cross country racer of all time is retiring after next year. From Velonews.com: "Swiss Thomas Frischknecht raced his 17th consecutive world championships. Frischi finished in 30th place, his worst-ever finish at the world championships. He said he would retire after 2008. "I want to ride one more," Frischknecht said. "I hope I can qualify for next year's team, even now I have to be happy to be on the team because we are so strong. I finish my career at the end of next year."

Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joes) and Emile Abraham (Priority Health) go for the field sprint at the Buckhead Grand Prix Pro/1/2.

Kennesaw Mountain Update From the National Park Service: "Mountain Road Users, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park held a public meeting on January 21, 2007 to discuss safety and visitor use concerns regarding the mountain road. A total of 61 people attended this meeting. Input from this meeting was used to develop a set of alternatives that were released at a second public meeting held on March 26, 2007 and attended by 42 people. This meeting was followed by a 30-day public comment period. The alternatives were made available in the visitor center and were posted
on the park web site. The park received 178 written comments. The park has not yet completed their responses to these comments. The University of Georgia has been conducting a visitor survey and
study of mountain road users since January 2007. This study will continue through September 2007, after which they will compile and evaluate the results. The park expects to receive their report in October.

Superintendent Dan Brown will be out of the park for the next 3-4 months serving as Acting Superintendent at Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Completion of the response comments and selection of a preferred alternative will be deferred until Superintendent Brown's return to Kennesaw Mountain NBP. Until that time the park will continue to seek visitor compliance with established laws and posted signage. Pedestrians are required by law to walk on the road shoulder where it exists, and to the far outside of the road where no shoulder exists. Vehicles including
bicycles are required to abide by the posted 25 mph speed limit.

During Superintendent Dan Brown's absence, Chief Ranger Lloyd Morris will serve as Acting Superintendent. He can be reached at 770-427-4686 ext. 228, or email lloyd_morris@nps.gov.

Thank you for your input, patience, and cooperation.  Sincerely, Daniel R. Brown Superintendent

Outback Ride Time Change The Outback ride on Wednesdays will start at 6:15 beginning this week.

9-11-2007 Brookhaven Parking From the SBL Boards:  "It was bound to happen sooner or later. We've been parking behind Mellow Mushroom for many years. Now the owner has called the police to inform them about our parking situation. If we're not using the restaurant at the moment we arrive, then we're at risk of having our cars towed or booted. Now he has hired a police officer to monitor the lot for any violators. I was a good samaritan and stayed behind to alert the joggers of this disheartening issue. In the meantime, the owner phoned the police and unfortunately, one of the cyclist got into the Deputy's face and was arrested." Trish's Note: Park elsewhere. It is the property owner's right to restrict parking on the business property. Just be forwarned if you park to ride in Brookhaven.

Please join us on Saturday, 9/15 at 9:00 AM in the Chicopee MTB parking lot or meet some of us at Curt's in Oakwood for breakfast at 8:00. Wear hiking/work boots and bring enough water and snacks for 4 hours of work. Lunch will be provided. Bring your bike too if you want to ride afterward and check out the advanced trail that's being cut."

Central Park Work Party From RAMBO: "If you live in the Roswell, Alpharetta, Forsyth county area please join RAMBO for a workparty at Central Park on Sat Sept 15th 9am. We will meet at the trail kiosk, and our objective is to finish the work on the back hill reroute in order for SOFA to then complete the work on their new 4 Cross track. Tools & lunch will be provided. Please bring gloves, water, and closed toe shoes or boots. There is also talk of us caravaning over to Chicopee after lunch to ride, so bring you bike also."

Cops Ticketing in Martins' Landing in Roswell From the Bike Roswell email list: "Last night we had a fairly small turnout. There was one person of note who came out; a City of Roswell police officer. He was on duty, but came by to tell us that his assignment that evening was to watch
us through the Martin's Landing area and specifically to ticket any bicyclist who failed to completely stop at a stop sign. This is apparently going to be their focus for the next few weeks. They are
targeting the Thursday night and Saturday morning rides as that is where most of the complaints are focused. From the fact that he was kind enough to alert us that they would be "hiding in the bushes" in
the ML area and that this order is apparently coming down from offices other than the Mayor's, I would strongly suggest that we give them absolutely no occasion to ticket us. By demonstrating to the
authorities that we do in fact ride responsibly and are in the right it will be easier to push back against future complaints as well as to tackle the issue of rude motorists."

9-19-2007 Festival of Speed From the Velodrome: Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that this weekend we will have two nights of racing at the Dick Lane Velodrome. The weather is supposed to be great and we have brought in some of the best riders in the US. This will be by far our fastest Festival of Speed in the 13 years that I’ve been promoting the velodrome. Our velodrome has one of the best programs in the country and you the fans have helped make it that way. I hope this weekend will be no exception. So mark it on your calendar!

We have discount tickets at OZ Pizza, The Baker Group, Turning Point Chiropractic, Outback bikes and pretty much every other bicycle shop in Atlanta. So make sure you stop by any of them before heading over.  You can get more information on the races at http://www.dicklaneveldrome.com.

The weekend Events include:
Friday night sprints: Qualifying starts at 6:30 with racing starting at 7:00. Sprints are the fastest events at the track. In fact Steve Hill just hit 45 mph’s this morning while training! And that was after a full workout.
Festival of Speed: Saturday night. Amateurs and women start racing at 2:30 with Pro Qualifiers at 4:30. Pro Racing gets officially underway at 6:00.

Our plethora of local kids start racing at 6:30. Come see just how good they’ve all become. They’re excited to have fans to watch them race so don’t disappoint them.
The show stopper will be the Pro “Chariot Race” 5 guys, one lap, all out sprint from a standing start. EXTREMELY fun to watch.
Then there’s the Madison where teams of two hand sling each other in and out of the race, while 15 other teams are doing the same thing.

This will be the last race of the season and we’re throwing out all the stops to make sure it’s the most exciting event going on in Atlanta. So bring your family and friends and head down to the velodrome for great night of food and entertainment. If you’d like, bring a picnic and blanket and hang out on the infield for a truly amazing experience.

Please spread the word... And I hope to see you all at the velodrome. Thanks, Wayne

9-25-2007 Sopo News  "Contact: Rachael Spiewak, Email: rachael@sopobikes org

RACHAEL SPIEWAK NAMED FIRST PAID SOPO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

September 24, 2007 -- This weekend, Sopo Bicycle Cooperative organizers named Rachael Spiewak as the organization's first paid Executive Director. "This is nothing but good for Sopo," said Volunteer Coordinator Amy Plasman. "Rachael has been there from the beginning, volunteering her personal time. She's the cornerstone of the organization."

Spiewak, who earned a Master's degree in social work from Georgia State University in 2006, and a Bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology from Emory University in 2003, is a co-founder of Sopo and has been serving as volunteer director since the organization's inception. She has both nonprofit management and bicycle advocacy experience. She previously served as a volunteer mechanic and board member of Decatur Yellow Bikes, and as GirlsBike! Club Leader for the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign. She has interned and worked for DeKalb Rape Crisis Center, Turner Middle School, and Jones Boys and Girls Club. "What's so great," about Rachael's background said Organizer Jes Gearing, "is that Rachael is personally involved in the programs--designing them, working with people and not for people."

As full time Executive Director of Sopo, Spiewak will raise money to fund herself and other paid positions, including volunteer coordinator and shop manager. She will work with the Sopo community to develop existing and new special programs, including: youth services like Youth Night and after school programming; Alternative Life Cycles, an alternative bicycles project for people who are disabled; and services in partnership with the International Rescue Committee in Clarkston. She will ensure Sopo representation at community and regional transportation planning meetings, neighborhood festivals, and bicycle events. "Being an all volunteer organization was nice," said Plasman, "but this is what we have been working towards so our organization can grow and reach more Atlantans."

9-27-2007 A Friend-Lee Ride  There's nothing like mountain biking with friends. You take turns following each other down the narrow, single-track trails. You
encourage each member of the group to ride over the obstacles, to keep
going forward. And when all is done, you reward yourselves with good
food and good company.

However, one of our friends is facing a huge obstacle with her health.
Lisa Lee has been a member and friend to the mountain bike community
in North Georgia for many years. Her dedicated service to the
Gainesville SORBA chapter, as a member and officer, is priceless. Over
the years, she has helped with several mountain bike events including
the TNT series, Tumblin Creek MTB Rumble and countless work parties at
Chicopee Woods and Gainesville State College. Lisa has also raced in
the beginner and sport categories in the GAP series. She is a
Gainesville native, a graduate of Johnson High School and has been
employed by Hall County Judicial System for more than 20 years.

Recently, Lisa has been in and out of the hospital with several health
problems resulting from a stroke she suffered a few years ago. She's
made many trips to Emory and several more to Texas for treatment. Some
of her expenses are covered but things such as gas, parking and most
importantly prescription medications are not. It has been a difficult
time for our friend Lisa both physically and financially, but you
never hear her utter a single negative word about her situation. And
through it all, Lisa has still been a huge supporter of our mountain
biking community.

To show Lisa just how much we appreciate her, and to express our love
and concern for her, we ask you to join us for a Friend-Lee Ride on
Saturday, September 29, 2007. Get all of the details here!

Steel Magnolias Ride The Steel Magnolias Cycleworks ride on Tuesdays will start at 6:00 beginning Oct. 2nd.

9-28-2007 Fouche Gap RR Cancelled From Rome Velo: Road Race on Sunday Cancelled. TT is still on for sure! Sadly we had to cancel RR. Full refunds will be given for RR. Very sorry for all who were looking forward to it. We suggest 6 Gap Century.

Riders Injured From Geoff, who was on the ride: "Just when you think you may have "seen it all", on tonight's Reality Bikes group ride, a large (40-50 ft) pine tree snapped off and fell across the road on Tribble Gap road, just past the summit (just north of Sawnee Mountian Preserve).

Unfortunately, the tree fell directly onto a rider (it hit his handlebars and wheel), and another rider rode directly "into" the fallen tree. This happened 10-20 feet in front of me.

The rider the tree fell on (Tim M.) was initially unconscious (he went xxxx over teakettle and landed on his neck, still clipped in), and breathing poorly. The other rider (Valerie O.) was shaken and scraped up after she went headlong into branches at speed.

Forsyth County sheriffs and fire responded quickly to our 911 calls. Both riders were transported to the hospital via ambulance strapped to backboards. After we got the road closed and the EMTs arrived, I rode back to Reality (in a full redline sprint.....) to retrieve Valerie's car (her husband was with us) so we could get their bikes home.

It was amazing to see, all in slo-motion. If Tim had been riding a nanosecond faster, the tree would have landed on his head......if the tree had fallen 10-15 seconds sooner, it would've chain-reactioned 25-30 riders (we were at the back end of the group)." Trish's note: I have read both riders have been released from the hospital. Both are just very bruised but have no major injuries. This was a freak accident that happened on Wednesday's Reality Bikes Ride.

Rickshaws in Athens An Athens resident has started a rickshaw business. This is a very neat article

9-29-2007 Six Gap Fundraiser From Nanimals' Tom Cross: We will be hosting an "Unofficial" 6 Gap Rest Stop at at our house at Miller Gap, the lesser known 7th Gap. Miller Gap is strategically located about 6 miles past Wolf Pen Gap and about 4 miles before Woddy Gap.

The rest stop will be run as a benefit for the Capital Fund Drive of the Suches Fire Department. If you ever are in an accident near Suches, the brave and well trained EMTs and first responders from the Suches Fire Department are the ones who will most likely be first on the scene to help you.

This rest stop is an effort to create goodwill between the cyclists who ride the mountain roads and the people who live and work in Suches year round. We all need to learn to "Share the Mountain Roads" better when riding up there. Please plan to stop at our rest stop and consider making a generous contribution to the Suches Fire Department.

Thank you in advance for any contributions you can make. Even if you can't make a contribution, please stop by for a drink or snack and say hi to our volunteers.

Ride safe and please don't forget to share the mountain roads. Have a fantastic 3 Gap Fifty or 6 Gap century!
