8-11-2008

Mountaintown Work Party From SORBA:  Work party starts at 9 a.m., Saturday, August 23rd, and ends at 1 p.m. EMBA is providing a great lunch for the volunteers. And, I mean a GREAT lunch!!! Meet on FS 90b (Stillhouse Road), which is off Gates Chapel Road, outside of Ellijay, Ga. The work to be done is trimming and slingblading. Other trail needs will be accomplished by means of a contract. SORBA's objective will be to create a trail clear of brush and vegetation at least 4 feet wide and 8 feet high, more is better than less. The more people, the better. Mountaintown is important, and a lack of volunteers for this effort will not look good, as the FS is considering what to do about mountain bikes on the trail.

8-12-2008 Central Park work Party From RAMBO: RAMBO will be having a work party this Saturday 8/16 from 9am to 1pm at Central Park in Forsyth County. Lunch will be provided. The Free Ride park needs a majority of the work and most of that work is cutting back the grass and bushes. If you can please bring gas powered weed eaters, trimmers, garden rakes and shovels. Anything that can be used to clean out the Free Ride Park so it can remain open. Any weed sprayers would help as well.

Address:
2300 Keith Bridge Road, Cumming, GA 30040 or 400N to exit 17. Take a left off the ramp. Park is just down the road on the left. Trail head is straight to the back of the park.

8-18-2008 Share the Road Century Trish's note: I usually don't cover centuries, but this is a worthy cause for ALL metro Atlanta Cyclists. My family will be there! Labor Day morning kicks off an important effort benefiting all road cyclists. I hope you will make every effort to attend this ride by sending your registration dollars in support of the effort to add Georgia to the growing list of states that have passed legislation requiring motorists to provide a 3 foot minimum passing distance. Please consider a donation even if you are unable to attend.

Will having such law on the books stop motorists from passing cyclists in a dangerous or harassing manner? This is like asking if motorists will stop running red lights. However, having a specific, enforceable, safe passing law on the books will advise motorists that it is their responsibility to pass other and all road users in a safe, responsible manner – share the road. Find out more about this effort by participating in this ride or by contacting ABC or GA Bikes.

Anyone riding from that area should park across the street. Neil Fleming" Please respect the churt this Sunday and park across the street or in the field across from Charlie's store.

Georgia Cyclocross Clinics We will hold the clinic rain or shine!! Yes! Here they are! When: Sunday, August 24th 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Where: Conte’s bike shop, Conyers, GA (less than 2 miles from the International Horse Park)
1927 HWY 138 NE
Conyers, GA 30013

Note: This is Co-ed so everyone is welcome, we will split into groups to work on skills. (we will have several volunteers there to work with men, women, juniors, and all skill levels) The clinic is FREE.

Are you wondering what this Cyclocross stuff is all about? We have the perfect clinic for you!!

Please join Kari and Shey Lindner and Trish Albert for a beginnner's cyclocross clinic and learn to dismount, hurdle barriers, carry your bike and remount. (Yes! You can do all of this!) We will discuss cyclocross bike setup and rules for the races. You may practice and compete on a cyclocross bike or a mountain bike bike, as long as there are no bar ends. This is all set in an co-ed environment that is relaxed and full of encouragement. This is also a great clinic for second season cyclocrossers to 'brush up' on 'merging with the bike'. We will have several knowledgeable racers to work with you on your skills, and Trish Albert will give an in depth review of cross frames and set-up. So, bring your questions.
.
THERE WILL BE A LARGE FLEET OF DEMO BIKES FOR THE CYCLOCROSS SERIES, THIS YEAR. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TRYING A DEMO BIKE DURING THE CLINIC PLEASE EMAIL ME TO SEE IF WE RECEIVED THEM AND ANY ARE AVAILABLE.

Come join us and see what all the buzz is about! CYCLOCROSS RAWKS!!!!

(please bring mtb or cyclocross bike, helmet, plenty of water to stay hydrated and a snack in case you get the munchies)

Tips: Remove bar ends before the clinic
Removing bottle cages before the clinics will make it easier to lift your bike. (we are always near water)
Pick your hardtail over your full suspension if you have a choice. (if you don’t ....who cares! We’ll have a blast anyway!)
Wear mtb shoes instead of road shoes and lycra instead of baggies if you have them. (so you don’t get caught on the seat)
(as tennis shoes worked just fine for a couple people last year, so come as you are!)

There are several places to eat that are close to Conte’s and the International Horse Park it right down the road. One awesome burrito place is Mad Cactus on Salem Road! (directions available at the clinic) If you have any questions please email Kari at klindner1@bellsouth.net  or Trish at sttarlite@hotmail.com

*Trish's note: There will be a second clinic Sept. 13th. It will offer a Juniors and Coed Clinic. Details to follow.

8-25-2008  Think you know bicycle law?  Take the Bike Roswell! quiz online! It is only 7 important questions. Takes less than a minute (unless you don't know the answers). After you take the quiz pass it on to your non cycling friends so they learn also.

Cyclocross Clinic Seventeen new riders came out to the first Georgia Cyclocross clinic on Sunday. The clinic was held in the field at Conte's Bikes of Conyers, a series sponsor. Women's A racers Kari Linder and Trish Albert put clinic participants through a series of skill drills focusing on dismounting, remounting, lifting the bike, and shouldering the bike. Shey Linder assisted the Juniors with proper technique while Adam Jones made adjustments on the day's loaner bikes. After practicing, participants tested their new skills on a mock cyclocross course including a barrier section and a run up.

The Georgia Cross Series welcomes all levels of riders to race. There are races for all experience levels from C (Beginner) to A (Expert/Professional).

Another clinic will be held at Contes on September 13th. Demo and loaner bikes will be available. Details will be coming soon!

Kari has some photos up on her blog.
