Kudzu Elite U23 Team FFCC Announces the Kudzu.com Elite U23
Team
Atlanta, GA—Kudzu.com has offered the backing necessary for an elite U23
team under the umbrella of the Fulton Flyers Cycling Club (FFCC). The team
continues where the junior development program left off by bringing together
a core roster of some of the strongest U23 riders in the southeast. All of
the riders have a demonstrated ability to be competitive at top national
events.
The team’s younger riders are Joey Rosskopf and Oscar Clark, both of whom
finished in the top 10 at junior road nationals in 2007 and were part of the
powerful Southeast Regional Tour de l’Abitibi team. Joey also spent part of
the season in 2007 riding for the national team while Oscar is fresh off a
top 20 finish at the U23 Cyclocross nationals in Kansas City. The team has
more experience in Jafer Beizer and Thomas Brown, who are both former
members of the FFCC junior team. Jafer is the Georgia State Cat 2 RR
champion while Thomas earned a top 5 placing at Collegiate Criterium
Nationals in 2007.
“I really look forward to working with these guys”, said Jeremy Hutchison-Krupat,
Director of the Kudzu.com U23 Team. “I have long been impressed with their
talents as individuals, but I have been even more impressed to see the
extent to which each of these guys will lay it on the line for one another
as team members. Look for great things from these guys!”
The team’s focus is on the southeast regional Pro-1-2 races as well as a
number of National Calendar events. The Kudzu.com Elite U23 Cycling Team:
Jafer Beizer, Thomas Brown, Oscar Clark, Joey Rosskopf, Jeremy Hutchison-Krupat

C4 Base Rides Resume The Covington Conyers Cycling Club (C-4) winter
base mileage rides
start this Saturday at 9 am from the Georgia International Horse Park in
Conyers. These rides are focused on building aerobic endurance, so we will
be riding long distances at a low to moderate intensity level.
This week's ride will be 51 miles, and we will increase the distance each
week by roughly 10%, culminating with a 100+ mile ride by the end of
February. If you haven't ridden the low-traffic, highly scenic roads
east of Atlanta, you've missed a real treat. And, winter is the best time to
take a long ride through the countryside. Come join us! For more
information, visit the C-4 Yahoo Group site at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CCCycling/ (Trish's note: Expect a pace of
at least 16 mph. This is not a relaxed/no drop ride, just good steady base
miles.)
Snake Creek This weekend is the first Snake Creek Gap Time Trial held by Northwest Georgia SORBA on one of the toughest trails around. Get the dirt on the race here.
Blanket's Creek News and Workparty From SORBA Woodstock: Happy New
Year! With the start of a fresh new year, I'm sure a lot of new years
resolutions were made. We at SORBA Woodstock are hoping one of those is to
help continue our trail building project to finish the new advanced loop.
Even if you haven't made one yet, just the simple goal of coming to one work
party will make a world of difference to this project. Even just one.
We will be starting the 2008 construction schedule with a Work Party this
Saturday, Jan 5th from 9am to 1pm. Lunch provided afterwards! We will be
continuing the hand finishing of the new advanced loop. While the volunteers
have taken a 3 week break, Charlie and Stephen have been continuing the
effort. They have completed over 3.5 miles of the 4 mile loop. The last half
mile is quite the challenge since it's located on steep grade hillside. The
last construction party of 2007 ended up completing another half mile of
finish work bring the total finished trail to be around 3 miles. We are 3/4
of the way there!
Also, we have headed into Freeze/Thaw Season for the trail, which means the
trail is subject to more closures due to rain followed by freezing
temperatures. Please be sure to check the site or better yet program your
cell phone with Blankets Creek Hotline - 770-621-5015 and be sure to call
before you head out. Riding on the trails during freeze/thaw cycles creates
extensive "tacky" mud that destroys the trail bed and causes us to take
attention off the new trail to fix the old ones. Please help us educate
other users who think riding during these times or "jumping the gate" is OK
and won't hurt anything. It ends up hurting the volunteers.
Finally, We ask to please stay off the new trail during this part of the
season, the rain and freeze/thaw has cause a lot of extra work for Charlie.
He has had to redo some "fresh cut" sections because of extensive tire ruts
from riding in the soft dirt.
Thanks for listening and we look forward to having you help us make SORBA
Woodstock a great asset to your family and the community. Sincerely, Jay
Wilkes

Silk Sheets Parking Cyclists, please remember to NOT park at the church on Sundays if you are riding Silk Sheets. They have Sunday services, and the church members need to be able to park there. Park in the lot across from Charlie's store or at Cochran Mill Park a few miles up the road. Also, remember to put a few dollars in the donation box when you park at the church. They are kind enough to let us park there, and we should support them.
Snake Creek TT I heard there were over 200 entries at the Snake Creek Gap TT and another job well done by Northwest Georgia SORBA. Results are up.

Mason Mill Park From a post on a local
forum: Mason Mill Park has been a popular in-town ride (also know as the
Waterworks trails), and the Atlanta Chapter has so far been unsuccessful in
convincing DeKalb County Parks to establish a relationship with SORBA. Now,
the County and the PATH Foundation plan to build a half-mile concrete trail
through the middle of the Park. This has sparked a lot of controversy with
community members, and Dekalb County Commissioner Jeff Rader has announced a
meeting to address community questions and concerns. If you are interested
in these trails, you should attend this meeting to get informed and to
clearly state your interests as a local SORBA member.
The meeting is scheduled for THIS THURSDAY, January 10, 2008, 6:00PM, at the
North Decatur Presbyterian Church. A great deal of information about the
Park and the PATH plan is posted at http://www.3forksalliance.org/ The
organization behind the web site is determined to defeat the PATH plan.
Personally, I'd like to hear what the plan's supporters have to say. Judging
from the maps and drawings posted on the 3forks site, it looks ugly.

Ronnie Thomson Dead FROM SORBA: Yesterday
Ronnie Thomson passed away. LH Thomson is renowned for their incredible
seatposts and stems and Ronnie is renowned in his support of cycling.
Tom Sauret, Executive Director of SORBA, said, "Ronnie was a true friend of
cyclists and very kind supporter of SORBA. We will miss him very much. This
is indeed sad news."
SORBA shows its appreciation each year by honoring Ronnie with an
appreciation day and birthday celebration. Thomson Appreciation Day has
grown from a day of thanks to a weekend of festivities. This event will
continue, at the request of his family, again next weekend. In stead of a
birthday card, however, please bring a condolences wish for the family.
Also, there will be no factory tour as well. Thomson Day
will still be a celebration of life for a man who has meant so much to
cycling!

Extra Intervals I do a windtrainer class every Thursday night and
teach it every few weeks.
Oh, the Lettuce Surprise You after windtrainer
class is so good! It has so many good for you veggies, fruits, and fresh
stuff. Sitting off to the side is the muffin bar. To tempt you--Apple
Cinnamon, Low Fat Pineapple, Corn, and.....Chocolate Chip muffins.
Oh, I had to have the second serving of salad. I walked past the muffin
bar....just as the muffin man was putting fresh, hot chocolate chip muffins
in the basket...straight from the oven. Oh, the smell--that heavenly smell.
I got the salad and stopped off for 2 muffins. Everyone at my table
stampeded over to get some of their own.
I quickly ate the second helping of salad. Sitting before me on their regal
throne (ok, small white plate) were two warm muffins. I could see the semi
melted chocolate chips adorning their crowns. Oh yes! They were calling my
name.
I broke one in half and watched the chocolate chips come gently apart as the
chocolate split. I bit into one half. Heaven! Warm chocolate chip
muffins......oh you taste so heavenly!
Warm chocolate chip muffins....worth doing that extra last interval set for.

Memories of Kansas City I had flashbacks to Cyclocross Nationals in Kansas City, KS last month as I looked out my windows on Saturday. With all the snow, I thought about getting my cyclocross bike and doing laps around my back yard just for the memories. Then I came to my senses and set up the trainer instead.

the snow. Cyclocross anyone?

Teen Cyclist Killed In Hit-And-Run; Driver Arrested POSTED: 6:09 am EST
January 22, 2008
BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Authorities in Glynn County say a man was arrested after a
bicyclist was struck and killed by car in a hit-and-run. Corporal William
Nease of the Georgia State Patrol says 18-year-old Mikeal Hodges was riding
a bicycle on U.S. Highway 17 around 12:30 Monday morning when he was hit by
a car.G lynn County Coroner Jimmy Durden says he died later at a hospital.
Nease says 24-year-old Enrique Martinez was stopped just minutes after
Hodges was hit
when a state trooper saw that one of the headlights on Martinez's car was
out and then noticed front-end damage. The trooper also heard a Glynn County
police alert about the hit-and-run. Nease says Martinez has been charged
with first-degree homicide by vehicle, hit-and run, driving under the
influence, driving with a suspended license and having an open container of
alcohol in his vehicle. He was jailed without bail at the Glynn County
Detention Center.

New Listserv From Joe Seconder Hi All, Please take the opportunity to
join a new Yahoo! Group that I have just created, "Cobb Cycling". The
purpose is to start, maintain and sustain a grassroots movement to promote
all forms of bicycling in Cobb County, Georgia. Please use this area to
inform others of events and to participate with local government, business,
civic and other organizations to make Cobb County a better place for
cycling.
This group not structured to organize rides. We want to act as a change
agent for the county to steer it towards being more bicycle friendly.
Instead of putting your bike on a rack and driving somewhere
to ride, wouldn't it be great to ride with your family from your home?
We're family, commuter, recreational, touring and competitive cycling
friendly. All folks are welcome, from street bikes, mountain bikes, road
bikes and kids with training wheels to someone who hasn't ridden a bike in
years.

1-29-2008 SEW Series Clarifications Based on several emails I received privately this week regarding an email that was widely distributed this week, I just wanted to clarify that the Georgia Cup is NOT putting on the SEW series although a few of their races are part of the series. The SEW series is an independent series of several races in the Southeast. No promoters are involved in the organization of the series, just a group of women that want to encourage and foster women's road racing. The Chattanooga and LaGrange Georgia Cups will be part of the SEW series along with many other races that are put on by various promoters. As part of the SEW series, promoters are required to put on 1/2/3 and 3/4 races. The tentative calendar is up. More details will be posted soon.

skills clinic in North Georgia to pass on some of her trail riding
knowledge. The clinic will be exclusively for women who are just getting
started in the sport of mountain biking. Laurie is a 20 year veteran of
mountain biking, she has watched the sport evolve from its rigid roots of
the 1980's to the now-a-day era of full suspension. Over the years and
through all the changes in technology she had honed her skills from riding
the trails here in the North Georgia Mountains. Along the way, she has given
encouragement to the many new faces of the sport. She loves the sport and
loves to help new riders achieve their goals!

Georgia Cup News From
The Georgia Cup Blog:
GC WOMEN'S SERIES WILL HAVE 7 RACE WEEKENDS
We had some miscommunication but now we have agreed to the following for
2008 GC Women! The GC apologizes for it's role in this miscommunication. Per
our conference call today women have asked for the following and we will
happily provide this for them.
7 Races beginning with Albany, Gainesville, Chattanooga, Athens, Cumming,
LaGrange and Atlanta will be the women's series.
2 categories: Pro123 and CAT 34 - Separate events, jerseys, points, podiums,
etc for those events.
There will be NO payouts for either division - instead the women want lower
entry fees.
Early - $50 for stage
Regular - $60 for Stage
Late - $70 for stage
TT- $25 all the time
RR - $35 'race day'
Crit/circuit - $35 'race day'
These two women will be key contacts for women in the GC and we communicate
directly with them.

We are VERY excited and really look forward to a great women's series!!
Trish's Note: My understanding is that "Early, Regular, and Late" fees will
apply to all categories. Price varies according to category. Some ladies
voiced their opinion that they race for the competition and not payout, so
there are lower entry fees for the women and no payout. Keep in mind that
promoters have expenses they have to meet, so they need to charge a minimum
fee.
From what was said, both Women's divisions will have leader's jerseys according to the GA Cup rules (MAR, KOM, etc.). Between the SEW Series and the GC, I think women's cycling is going to flourish this year!
Of course, don't forget the great mountain bike events by
Gone Riding! Gone Riding has
supported women's racing for years, and mountain bike race organization
doesn't get better than Dave and Terry!
