8-4-2009 But, TRISH!!! But, Trish! Why won't you list all those great centuries, charity rides, running events, triathlons, bike tours, and baseball games on your website?? Oh! Oh! and my kid's birthday party is this weekend? Can you put that up, too? We are having mini bike races.

TIME! I need to keep the focus of Southeastern Cycling on the content you see here now--Local News, mountain bike happenings (come on, it's easy cut and paste!), Weekly Group Ride listings, Maps, The Race Calendar, and the misc. stuff I post. But, you should have TIME! Why don't you!? You find time to update the site a bunch of times a week anyway.

I work full time--and silly you, you thought the website paid my mortgage, my power bill, and bought me that new Titus X I'm building up! Full time means 40-50 hours a week, sometimes more at my "day job," which I enjoy--oh, and sometimes those silly servers require reboot at 2:00 am, so I could work nights, too,  (No, really! I enjoy what I do and work with some great people!). I also train and ride MY bike about 10-15 hours/week, my loving husband and family enjoy seeing me and doing things with me occasionally that don't involve a bike (Imagine That!), I have a house that needs to be cleaned, I have a yard that needs to be cut, I have noncycling friends I enjoy getting together with, and (the horror!) some night I don't do anything and sit on the couch watching Versus and HGTV. Southeastern Cycling is done in my spare time--usually about 5 hours a week, sometimes more, sometimes less.

3:00PM Lane Positioning and Negotiating with Motorists - Learn "Best Practices" of riding with motorists. After this clinic you will view "Share the Road" in a completely new light, be it behind the wheel of a car or on your bike, with Robyn Elliott, Bicycle Tours of Atlanta.

Along with clinics, we will also have a cycling and health related EXPO on Saturday, Aug 8th! ome by, learn and share the fun! Trish's Note: Please contact Roswell Bikes if you are interested in the clinics. I am not affiliated with them.

"B" Group will start at 6:30 18-20 mph Gather at Bottom of Martin's Landing to go through stop lights together

8-18-2009 Grant Park Crit This Weekend! From Jeff Blau, the race director: The Grant Park Criterium is this Sunday, Aug 23rd. Spread the word! It's been a challenging year to put on a bicycle race but we've managed to put together great primes, super payouts and awesome prizes. The beginner races were created for those cyclists who want to try criterium racing without the intimidating environment or cost associated with a licensed, sanctioned event. If you know anyone who may be interested, pass the info along!

Congratulations to you both! Details on www.cyclingnews.com  and www.velonews.com.

Southeastern Cycling also wishes Tina the best in her upcoming retirement from cycling. It has been a pleasure watching you race and win since 1996. You've done so much for women's cycling!

Problems Uploading to the Site I've been having problems uploading some things to Southeastern Cycling the last week. I think I have a work around that will be in place by the end of this week. The index page isn't affected, but some other pages are. Thanks for your patience!

8-15-2009 New Trails in Marietta Marietta City Council at their August 12 meeting approved creating hiking and family-friendly mountain-biking trails at Wildwood and Burruss parks off South Cobb Drive and Cobb Parkway. To help prevent injuries on the trails and ensure long-term trail sustainability, directional signs will be posted to let bicyclists and pedestrians know which way to go. Trails will be opened to the public August 24, Marietta Parks and Recreation director Rich Buss said.

Trish's Note: Dan Thornton posted this on the Bike Cobb email list regarding the trails: "These trails are family friendly and NOT another Blankets Creek. The slopes are mild and most are very smooth. Those that are looking for aggressive off road trails it's not going to be for you. We have that further north. In my opinion it's exactly what this area needs! A great place to take the kids or anyone that's learning what mountain biking is all about."

Heritage Work Party From SORBA Athens: No work this Tuesday but we will be out there on Saturday 08/22. We'll meet in the parking lot at 10:00 AM. We need all the help we can get as we are on a tight schedule. The county would like us to be ready for mapping and ordering signs by Oct 1. and I can't do it all myself. It gets lonely out there. We will be working on clearing a corridor on the rerouts and other prep for bench cutting. So come on out and help build some sweet new singletrack. Call me if need be 706-296-7288. Youth Crit Practices From Eric Broadwell: To All with future tour de France riders at home, Last night we went to the Lebanon Baptist Church on Crabapple just north of 92 for a crit ride with our daughters, 10 and 12 yrs old. This was the first practice and the location was top notch. Off road parking, a loop of .49 miles around the church, no speed bumps, no cars, flat as a pancake and very safe.

We rode clockwise as this made the turns very safe. We will be doing this every Monday evening as the Roswell based Fulton Flyers Development team practice. You don’t have to be on the team to practice this is an open practice.  We will ride and have instruction time on techniques and etiquette. We encourage and invite parents to join in. The ride is best suited for beginner riders from the age 9 to 16. Road bicycles are preferred and some team bikes will be available. The goal for the team is to go to the State Championships and National Championships next year. There is also a SE regional series that is forming. Age divisions are 10-12, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 divided by gender. Ages are based on what age you will be on Dec 31 of that year. So if you are 10 years old on Dec 31 2010 your are racing age legal. Call me for more information. Eric Broadwell 678.520.7337 eric@atlantapro.com

8-21-2009 Central Park Work Party From RAMBO: Central Park needs a big cut back this weekend. We plan to work Sunday morning starting at 8 am. If you can’t make it that early then just show up when you can. If you come in later call me and I’ll let you know what is up. We are renting 1 or 2 walk behind mowers to make quick work of the back hill, out and back, and below the ball fields mowing. We will need strong grass rakes for the back hill, Weed eaters for the other sections of the trail, and lopers to cut back any tree or brush growth. Please remember CP has a lot of poison ivy so cover-up and wash up immediately once you get home.  Lastly Warren said helpers can stop by his new Ice cream shop at exit 12 off 400 The Ice Cream Social if you’re really hot when we are done. I’m pretty sure I could get our RAMBO Pres to spring for lunch some place too if the volunteers want to go. Please spread the word that we need help. Please PM me if you can help, with when you’ll arrive and what tools you might be able to provide. Thanks, Joe Baker RAMBO Events Coordinator 678 481 1252

Charlotte Sports Cycling is joining forces with the gang from First Flight Bicycles and the Tarheel Trailblazers to host the 2009 Cackalacky Cup. The Cackalacky Cup is a three-day vintage-themed mountain bike festival with a little something for everyone. Mountain bike racing and riding....you never know who might show up. Some of you may or may not know Bob Karriker. Bob and his family live in Statesville, NC. Bob has been instrumental in developing and building many of the mountain bike trails here in the piedmont of North Carolina. He has dedicated an enormous amount of his life to building and maintaining the mountain bike trails we all ride every week. Recently, Bob, a talented machine operator, was working with a Trailblazer crew at the US National Whitewater center when the Ditch Witch rolled over, crushing his ankle. Things have been a little tight for the Karriker family so with the help of the Trailblazers, we decided to dedicate a portion of the proceeds to Bob and his family. We hope you will all come out and support this event. Friday: Open house at First Flight Bicycles and The Museum of Mountain Bike Art & Technology. Trace the history of mountain biking with over 250 vintage mountain bikes to admire. From Klunkers to Carbon!

Saturday: Mountain Bike Time Trials at Lake Norman State Park. Awards will be based on cumulative time of a technical time trial with obstacles on the Itusi Trail and all out speed on the Monbo Trail. There will even be separate categories for those brave soles on their vintage steeds Lunch and special guest presentation will follow the two mountain bike time trials. From 5pm to 8pm, join Jeff, Wes and the gang for open house at First Flight Bicycles and The Museum of Mountain Bike Art & Technology

8-24-2009 Al Burress MTB Trails Opening I went to the Al Burress Park mtb trails opening today. I rode the entire trail--some parts twice--in about 10 minutes. It reminds me of Mosquito Flats and the Mosquito Loop at Blanket's Creek. It's great for kids and families, definitely not a "mountain biking destination." There is also a nice pavilion in the middle of the park that you can eat a picnic lunch at. It's nice to see a beginner trail so close in Cobb County! Photos are here.  The Marietta Daily Journal has an article as well.

PedalRight Fit Studio Welcome to our new advertiser, PedalRight Fit Studio!

A New Concept in Bicycle Fit & Performance
PedalRight Fit Studio is an exciting new concept in individualized bicycle fitting services for any type of cyclist - professional racers, elite amateurs & recreational racers, tri-athletes, mountain bikers, fitness cyclists and weekend riders. Located in Vickery Village in Cumming - the northern heart of the Atlanta metropolitan area’s best riding, PedalRight Fit Studio is a unique environment.  Available on an appointment-only basis, the studio has been specifically designed for bike fitting and analysis, and will host professionally-led trainer-based spin classes and indoor group “rides” this fall and winter. Boutique bicycle studios have existed for many years in other parts of the country, in fact bicycle studios were recently featured in Bicycling Magazine. PedalRight now brings the specialized philosophy of the studio to the Southeast, with a slightly different approach than any other studio or fitter. Simply put, our philosophy is to offer the best fitting services possible, and fit you to the bike you have, regardless of type or brand. This brand-agnostic approach insures that our only priority is that you are able to achieve your personal cycling goal, whether it be the top step of the podium, a new personal best, completing a century pain free, or simply staying in shape.

Technology & Team
PedalRight Fit Studio combines the cutting-edge Retul fit system, the leader in motion-capture biomechanical analysis - adopted by organizations including the Garmin-Slipstream Professional Cycling Team and Carmichael Training Systems - with a team of expert fitters with years of experience in bicycle fit, exercise physiology, bicycle mechanics and set-up (and all are serious riders and racers, too) in a stress-free gallery-like environment.

The PedalRight Difference
Our fitting services include the motion-capture technology of Retul and CycleOps power analysis, so we can insure that your fit combines comfort with performance. Unlike fitting done in a Local Bike Shop, there are no distractions and no pressure to buy or try different bikes, components or accessories. PedalRight does not sell bikes, components or accessories, in fact we partner with many of the leading local bike shops to provide custom fitting services for their customers.

Location, Location, Location
Our location in Vickery Village is nearby many of the best ride routes and group rides in North Georgia, including the Vickery Thursday ride, Reality Bikes Calzone ride, Webb Bridge ride, Jittery Joe’s ride, Alpharetta Sunday ride and less than 1-mile from the just opened Forsyth County extension of the Big Creek Greenway. This enables our fitters to ride with you on frequently-used roads to observe your style, analyze your fit on-the-road (before and after) and insures that fitting done in the studio translates to the road or trail.

Hunting Change at Bull Mtn. From SORBA:  For those of you who ride on the Bull Mtn and Turner Creek trails at the Jake/Bull Mtn trail system outside Dahlonega, there's been a significant change that you need to know about.  Please spread the word to your non-SORBA friends (why aren't they members?) and others you meet out on the trail. The Bull Mtn & Turner Creek trails (to the north/west of forest service road FS28) have been in The Blue Ridge WMA for a very long time - where hunting was only permitted on specific dates during the fall & winter.  So, from Sept thru December it was safe to ride those trails (except on those specific dates), knowing that no one was hunting in those woods. However,  The Blue Ridge WMA has officially been dropped by Georgia DNR (budget cuts), and the National Forest land that was in the WMA will now be managed for hunting like other general forest areas, - - i.e., it will be open for the entire season for whatever species, with no special "hunt dates".   What this means to you as a trail user is that from mid-September thru December (and March thru May in the spring for turkey) there will be hunting on those trails just like there has always been on the Jake Mtn trails (south/east of FS28).  As a courtesy to the other user group (hunters) SORBA recommends that you do not begin riding on any Jake/Bull Mtn trail during those months until 10:00 a.m.  Remember, those trails are designated multi-use - - and that includes hunters too.
Another suggestion is that when you do ride during hunting season (no matter where that is) is that you wear blaze orange - (the more, the better) and bells are good too so you are making noise. Take care this fall and have fun riding!
