Charlotte News From Charlotte Sports Cycling: Sunday, January 4
We have a trail work day planned for the infamous short track course at
Renaissance Park. We plan to start working this Sunday, Jan. 4th at 9:00am.
We will meet by the dumpsters on the softball side of Renaissance Park. The
plan is to make some improvements to the existing course, but mainly we are
extending the course to include the first part of the Figure 8. This will
add a little more fast singletrack to the course and break the climb up into
a few parts with more passing room on the gravel road section. This should
be a nice change for those who have raced the Winter Short Track before, and
it will make the laps a bit longer, maybe 45 seconds or so.
Come out and bring a shovel if you have one to help move gravel. We will
have the Ditch Witch loader and 2 ATV's with dump trailers, so the work
should go fast. Oh yeah, we plan to provide Topper's Pizza for all
volunteers at lunchtime.
If we have enough people, we will add a few more features to the course.
This is the time to add input.
Thanks and we'll see you there.

Mountain bike museum opens in North Carolina
By Gary Boulanger, BikeRadar
The sport of mountain biking is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2009,
and leading the celebration is the Museum of Mountain Bike Art & Technology
(MOMBAT), a new museum created to preserve and chronicle the evolution of
the sport, its personalities and products, located in Statesville, North
Carolina.
The museum's collection contains over 400 bicycles, including more than 250
mountain bikes. Displayed alongside the bicycles at MOMBAT are hundreds of
vintage parts and accessories and thousands of pieces of literature,
including period catalogs and magazines that follow the evolution of the
sport.
"With our location near the intersection of two major interstates, the
museum is convenient for anyone traveling in the area, and we've had
visitors from all around the US and overseas as well," said Jeff Archer, the
museum's curator. Archer told BikeRadar the museum is split between two
floors of 5,000 square feet each, with 14-foot ceilings.
"The online shop history tells quite a bit about how we got to where we are
now," he added.
In the mid 1970s, the mountain bike sprang to life as a grassroots effort by
a small group of riders in Marin County, California, who converted
balloon-tired cruisers into trail bikes by removing superfluous equipment
and installing knobby tires. The first purpose-built off road bikes were
made in the late 1970s when the term "Mountain Bike" was first used to
describe them, and the sport grew rapidly worldwide in the following years.
The original mass produced mountain bike, the Specialized Stumpjumper,
arrived in stores in 1982. An example of this model now resides in the
Smithsonian Institution, and a similar model is displayed at MOMBAT.
Technological innovation is evident in the bicycles featured at MOMBAT, with
the evolution of front and rear suspension designs, hydraulic disc brakes
and the progression from five to 27 gears over the life of the sport. Frame
materials also evolved, from basic steel tubes to wildly shaped and
extremely lightweight composites and metals. Artistic design and
construction is also found on bikes and components as some of the best
examples of bicycle fabrication are on display at the museum, including
details ranging from experimental to innovative and artful.
The museum also sponsors the Cackalacky Cup, an increasingly popular
vintage-themed mountain bike festival that takes place each summer.
MOMBAT is located within First Flight Bicycles in historic downtown
Statesville, NC. Admission is free and the museum is open to the public
Monday-Friday, 10-6 and Saturday, 10-5. Visitors are welcomed and encouraged
to take their time to view the exhibits.
Those unable to visit the museum in person can view much of the collection
at www.mombat.org.

Women's Seminar From 55Nine Performance: Atlanta, GA. (January 9,
2009) - Following the lead of USA Cycling's Enhancing Women's Leadership in
Cycling seminar is a new seminar coming to Atlanta, GA on February 7, 2009.
Presented by USA Cycling, USA Triathlon, Georgia State University, and
55nine Performance, Enhancing Women's Leadership and Performance in
Endurance Sports aims to educate and empower women and those that work with
women on how best to enhance participation, leadership, and performance in
endurance sports (running, cycling, triathlon). The intended audience is
male and female coaches and trainers that work with women athletes, club
directors, event organizers, and the women athletes themselves.
"The Leadership seminar offers women a great chance to learn and also
develop contacts with other coaches and endurance enthusiasts. The
presenters are top notch and should increase the knowledge of the
participants. USA Cycling appreciates the efforts of the organizers in
bringing together women interested in promoting cycling," says Sam Callan,
USA Cycling's coaching and education manager.
The previous women's leadership clinic, brainchild of Kristen Dieffenbach,
assistant professor of athletic coaching education at Western Virginia
University and Lynda Ransdell, professor and chair of kinesiology at Boise
State University, saw 32 female leaders from all levels of cycling converge
to share experiences and resources. The pair, along with Sam Callan, used
the session to help empower more women to enhance the sport of cycling and
to get out and do something in their own communities. Namrita O'Dea of
55nine Performance in Atlanta, GA, is joining with Kristen Dieffenbach to
bring the same type of education and empowerment to endurance coaches,
trainers, and women athletes in the Southeastern US. "Cycling has a rich
history of empowering women. I am very excited about the growing energy in
the world of women's endurance sports and all the wonderful things that are
being done to provide education and networking in the field. The Enhancing
Women's Leadership and Performance in Endurance Sports conference will
provide an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in working with women
and enhancing the area of women's endurance sports," states Dieffenbach.
Topics will include Sport Physiology and Training Female Endurance Athletes,
Sports Nutrition and its Current Issues in Female Athletes, Sport
Psychology, and an Elite Athlete discussion panel with leaders such as Donna
Garcia, Tina Pic, and Stephanie Herbst-Lucke. Michael Engleman of the USWCDP
will also be present as a panelist. "Most women athletes come into cycling
on an entire different path then the men as so many of the athletes we work
with came from other sports. They also are very educated so it takes a
special approach and relationship to work with women athletes who are
postponing working careers with real incomes to try and reach the most Elite
levels in a sport where the monetary reward will never be high. It is the
same work ethic and drive to be the best as the men, it is just that women
find different driving forces. It is important as coaches and support staff
that we understand those compromises," he said.
The seminar will also count for Continuing Education hours (CEUs) for both
USA Cycling and USA Triathlon coaches. Registration is online at
www.bikereg.com

me...send me yours and maybe I'll include them.
There is a new posting format for Charity and Challenge Rides & Events. The
format makes it easier to post the highlights. You can then follow a web
link if you're interested in more. Keep in mind that many ride sites won't
be updated until the actual ride gets closer.
The 2009 "Assault on Morrow Mountain Series" is posted. Seven rides are set
from March thru September.
Currently rides posted include:
19 Weekly Rides
9 Charity Events
31 Challenge Events
7 Morrow Mountain Rides
Plus much, much more.
I still have a lot to post and as the season gets closer the weekly rides
posted will increase.
Check it out and let me know how it works on your end. Good, Bad, or
Ugly...I need to know.
I'll look forward to your comments...until then,
Ride Safe,

Cobb County Bike/Ped Open House I went to the Cobb County Bike/Ped
Open House tonight. They had the proposed Bike/Pedestrian plan out for
public comment. One thing I was glad to see were some specific
recommendations for Silver Comet extensions/connectors going towards
downtown Atlanta. This will make riding into Atlanta much safer. The best
one for access to downtown was along Atlanta Road from the current Silver
Comet Connector to the Atlanta Rd. Bridge and the Fulton County line. For
more information,

New Georgia Racing Series (Strangely, SE Cycling is not on their
email list....hmmmmm) From a press release: New Racing Series For Georgia!
Georgia Cycling Gran Prix: TopView Sports and Swagger.us Create New Georgia
Points Series.
Athens, GA - Two of the most experienced event producers in the southeast
have joined forces to bring a fresh perspective to racing in the state of
Georgia. TopView Sports, Swagger.us, and the Gwinnett Sports Commission are
pleased to announce the creation of the Georgia Cycling Gran Prix, a
year-long series that will take professional and amateur racers across the
state.
The Georgia Cycling Gran Prix is excited to bring racers in the region great
venues, fast results reporting, friendly registration staff, and most
importantly, fun and safe racing. Other features of the series include an
overall points competition and prize money and an end-of-season awards
banquet to recognize the winners of each category.
Anchored by the 30th Annual Athens Twilight Criterium, held the last weekend
of April, and the Third Annual Gwinnett Bike Fest to be contested in July,
the Georgia Cycling Gran Prix will boast ten events.
The Athens Twilight Criterium has been steadfast in its mission to not only
provide the highest caliber of racing for professional riders, but to
increase involvement in the sport among amateur riders, as well as to grow
community initiatives. The Twilight weekend includes amateur category bike
racing, kid's events, festival activities, the UGA/Twilight Jazz Festival, a
5k run, and a cycling participation ride. Within its 30 year history, the
Twilight has heralded such accolades as "The Criterium Not to Miss" by
VeloNews Magazine, "The Best Road Cycling Race of 2008" by Blue Ridge
Outdoor Magazine, and will appear in the March issue of Outside Magazine as
"One of the Best Races in America" feature .
The 2009 Gwinnett Bike Fest has expanded to seven stages in six days,
starting on July 21 with the final race on July 26. The Bike Fest will begin
at Road Atlanta on July 21, followed by the Gwinnett Center Criterium on the
22nd. Two road races will take place on the 23rd and 24th. On Saturday the
25th, a time trial will be held in the morning, followed by a criterium in
historic Downtown Norcross. The final day of racing will take place on a 2.5
mile loop in the Gwinnett Progress Center.
Georgia cycling is thriving throughout the state, inspite of the
discontinuation of the Tour de Georgia, and participation and spectator
appeal is blossoming. "The events that comprise the Georgia Cycling Gran
Prix have been around for several years, with the Athens Twilight hosting
its 30th year of racing, as well as the 3rd Annual Gwinnett Bike Fest," Pete
Sherrard of the Gwinnett Sports Commission noted. "We are extremely excited
to bring racing to all skill levels across the entire state."

1-28-2009 Old Memories A few years ago, I rode for Boneshaker Bicycles race team. I'm still a loyal customer! One of my current teammates found a Boneshakers Team Jersey at the Beef O Brady's in Grayson, GA and shared a few photos with me. It brings back some great memories! I'd say the picture and jersey are from about 2003 or 2004. Remember the old Zaxby's team from the early 2000s? I still see a jersey in some of the older Zaxbys franchises when I'm on the road.

Harbins Work Party From GATR: GATR’s and Friends of GATR,
We have a work party scheduled for Saturday Jan 31, 2009 from 10-3. We have
had a great deal of support from a core group of GATR’s and have
accomplished a lot. We would like to have a lot of folks involved in the
building of this trail system, so COME ON OUT and JOIN in the FUN....it is a
PARTY atleast that is what the name says. This work party will focus on
section MB3 ~2.5-3 miles. Steele and Associates has done a great job of
clearing the corridor and rough cutting the trail. Our focus will be on
creating Back-slope (where appropriate), cleaning the trail bed and creating
the out-slope.
GATR will provide all the necessary tools (mccleods, pulaskis fire rakes,
and loppers). If you have a favorite tool you want to bring feel free to do
so. Also you will need to wear appropriate clothing for outdoor work. Sturdy
shoes / workbooks are a must. Also bring snack and water for the day. Since
this is the only work party this weekend the time is extended, if you cannot
be there for the entire time please let Dave Greenwell know when you will be
arriving. We will make sure you have directions to the worksite. You can pm
Dave or you can reply to this post. PS… if we don’t get too much rain this
week and the trails are dry, we may try to put some wheels on the trail
 …so bring your bike! NO PROMISES trail conditions will dictate
whether we ride or not.

Team Terrapin Beer Terrapin Beer team ready for second year
Undergoing a metamorphosis over the winter following its first year, The
Terrapin Beer mountain bike team will emerge in March with a stronger team
and renewed passion. Two key riders, Maria Carrelli and Wild Bill Lanzilotta,
will return to lead the squad while new to the team are Chris Janiszewski,
Anna Kelso, Jeremy Edge, David Hall and Shey Linder.
Of the old guard, Carrelli is a two-time Georgia singlespeed state champion
while Lanzilotta remains the senior member of the team and returns as the
current Georgia State Champion (men's expert 40+).
Janiszewski, a native to the southeast, comes to the team from Gainesville
Florida, and is a regular on the National Ultra Endurance (NUE) series while
Kelso is making the move from the DCMTB after winning the Terror of
Teaberry, finishing second at the Tour de Tykes and third in the Fool's Gold
50 miler. Edge is a local rider who impressed management at 24-hour event
last season, and Hall is an established roadie who had collected two road
race state championships (North Carolina), four criterium state
championships (South Carolina) and two cyclo-cross titles (South Carolina
and Georgia). Finally, former SoBe-Cannondale rider Linder is a veteran of
the sport who runs the Cycleyouth Development and FFCC Development teams. He
consistently finished in the top ten in the National Ultra-Endurance Series.
Former team member Rebecca Tomaszewski, who won the US 24 hour national
championship in the duo pro co-ed category and two collegiate national
titles, leaves the team for 2009.
