6-1-2009 Bump N Grind
Dear BUMP,
You know we racers love BUMP N GRIND! The 15 year anniversary was this weekend, and it's one of the longest running races in the Southeast. The course is one of the last long, epic XC courses in the Southeast. It's always in great shape, and it's just plain fun. BUMP does a wonderful job of maintaining the trails. The volunteers are always awesome and friendly. The neutral feed near the top of the hill is great and makes a unique part of the race (Really, you guys think of everything! Gatorade, water, and water sprayers...). Registration is well organized and goes quickly. The prizes are awesome (love cash for Sport!)...BUT
SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE ABOUT THE TIMING ISSUE!! It's never been great, but we waited over SIX HOURS for the awards on Sunday. Maybe it's time to consider hiring a different timing company. I know you hire one to do the timing for the race. They had people in the wrong classes, wrong age groups, and in a few cases the wrong category (experts racing sport and such). It was hot, people had their children out there the entire time, we were hungry & thirsty, and some of us drive a long way to race including a time change not in our favor going home. We don't want to get home at midnight as we have to be up very early for work on Monday. Please, Please, BUMP, fix the timing issue. There are plenty of other races in the Southeast (Ex. Gone Riding) that have results ready and awards done within an hour of the finish of the race. Consider talking to the other promoters to see who they use for timing. There are several timing companies other than said one that screws it up.
BUMP N GRIND is too good of a race to have such horrible timing issues. Thanks for listening.
Trish Albert
(Trish's note: This is my opinion only. It does not represent the views of the rest of Southeastern Cycling or its advertisers.)
6-2-2009 BUMP Response I got two emails from BUMP members; I think one may be a board member as well. They and the club were both disappointed with the timing and how long it took to get everything resolved with the race on Sunday. Apparently the timing company said all of the prior year's problems had been worked out. (Where have we heard that before with this company??) The original plan was to have awards done by 1:30 to make sure everyone could leave early or stay and watch the pros.
Here's my problem. They have had problems with this timer for YEARS! Why not find someone new?? I've made suggestions, others have made suggestions. They have a starting point, now someone needs to act on it. The easy way out is to bring the timer back year after year. Is it price? Is it ease of hiring the same one? I don't know.
It is such a shame for an otherwise great (and I mean every other aspect of the race is something other promoters could emulate) race to be marred by such a large problem. I know BUMP and its members work very hard to put on the race. But guys, this problem isn't like running out of a size of tshirts. This is a big deal! You WILL lose racers. I already know several people that will not be coming back. I'm going to give Bump N Grind one more chance, but if stand around for more than 2 hours after my race next year, I won't be back.
6-3-2009 Macon MTB Clinic From OMBA: OMBA is hosting a beginner's mountain bike clinic June 7th at the Georgia Industrial Children's Home (Pig Trail) at 4 p.m. We will talk about some things, practice some basic skills, and then go for a ride. If you would like to participate, please bring a bike, helmet, sturdy shoes, and water. Bud Plant Parking From Joann Powell This Friday the Anheuser Busch
Brewery in Cartersville is celebrating Bring Your Child To Work Day. The
south parking lot will be closed to provide activities for the employee’s
children. Cyclists must park in the north lot this Friday.
Also, it's a good time to consider how grateful we are to have such a
wonderful, safe place to park while we enjoy riding on the beautiful rural
roads of Bartow and surrounding counties. Please respect the Anheuser Busch
Brewery and the employees by following a few common sense rules:
* No peeing in the parking lot or behind bushes on the property.
* Change clothes discreetly.
* No dropping trash or hanging clothes to dry on the fence.
* Make eye contact, smile, and wave when appropriate. Not a bad rule on the
road as well.
* Leave optimal, close to front door parking places for the employees.
* Limit riding around the parking lot as you wait for a ride to begin.
Employees coming to work don't want to worry about dodging cyclists as they
look for a place to park.
Please pass the information along to any cyclists you know that may not be
on the Brewery Rider list, but enjoy the privilege of parking at the
Anheuser Busch Brewery.
Silver Comet Warning From the webgeek: A large buckle has form in the concrete at the west end of the ramp for the tunnel under Mt Olivett Rd. It's fairly large, similar to the two others which formed a few years ago. It's especially dangerous when approaching form the west as it drops of very quickly onto the approach ramp for the tunnel.

Beat the Heat Challenge at Brasstown Bald to Fight Childhood
Obesity, Support Tour de Georgia’s Return Unique Tour de France Viewing
Party at Race’s Conclusion
Atlanta (June 2009)— Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is presenting
competitive cyclists with a seemingly irresistible challenge: race 4,784
feet to the top of Brasstown Bald Mountain to help raise awareness about
childhood obesity and create excitement for the return of Tour de Georgia.
Beat the Heat, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, will take
place the weekend of July 18 and 19 at Falling Waters, a mountain retreat in
north Georgia. The event kicks off Saturday with events for cyclists of all
levels and includes a myriad of physical activities, including cycling, time
trials, criteriums, mountain biking and duathlons.
Beat the Heat’s signature event, the Georgia Natural Gas Beat the Heat Ride,
is a 100K challenge bicycle ride that starts at Falling Waters and finishes
at the top of the world-famous Brasstown Bald Mountain on Sunday. Notable
professional riders will participate in the ride and set the climb time to
beat. After traversing an elevation of 4,784 feet, riders will join
spectators for a one-of-a-kind Tour de France viewing party atop Brasstown
Bald Mountain. The Tour de France will be taking place at the same time and
at the same elevation.
Last year, the Tour de Georgia raised more than $400,000 for Children’s
Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service. With the support of the
Tour de Georgia Foundation, Children’s launched Beat the Heat this year to
continue generating support for its wellness initiatives from multi-sport
and cycling enthusiasts.
"We applaud Children’s for the organization's proactive work to reduce
childhood obesity and support the Tour's return,” said George Hincapie. "I
encourage all cyclists and tri-athletes in the Southeast to come to
Brasstown to support both Children’s and the return of the Tour."
True to its mission, Beat the Heat’s two-day itinerary seeks to educate and
engage both the athlete and the athlete's family.
Guests are invited to visit the free Fit Families Expo, where exhibitors and
sponsors will share tips for leading healthier lives. Other signature events
include:
• Falling Waters X-Country Challenge—Cross-country mountain bike race with
more than 3,000 feet of climbing (and descending) with single track trails
and short distances on either gravel or pavement
• TTs (Time Trials) —Challenging bike run for professionals, featuring an
8.24-mile loop that climbs out of Falling Waters with a 1,000-foot elevation
gain and fast descents
• Kids Duathlon—For children ages 6 to 17, this ride takes place in the deep
conservation areas of Falling Waters
• Streets, Creeks and Sneaks 7-mile Trail Run—Challenging, uphill mountain
run
• Streets, Creeks and Sneaks 5K—Exhilarating run with modest elevation
changes

Augusta to Host IMBA World
Summit The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA)
has announced that Augusta, Georgia, will host the 2010 IMBA World
Summit (May 5-8). Mayor Deke Copenhaver proclaimed, “It is truly an
honor to host the IMBA gathering in Augusta. Our city continues to
grow in its reputation as a bicycling destination, and this event
will showcase our region to a worldwide audience of trail
enthusiasts.”
The event, expected to be the largest yet in IMBA's history of
hosting international summits, is open to the public. Topics will
include destination and urban trail networks, land conservation and
sustainable trails, youth outreach and new programs designed to grow
local capacity for the 700+ clubs and patrols in IMBA’s global

advance information on everything to do with mountain biking and
trail-based recreation,” states IMBA Executive Director Mike Van
Abel. “We will bring leaders in trail design together with land
managers, the bicycle industry and IMBA’s thriving grassroots clubs.
These are the key influencers that shape the sport, and only an IMBA

4th ANNUAL CYCLE FOR PARKINSONS-June 27-28, 2009
Benefiting Georgia Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease
Association
(Gwinnett County, GA) – During the weekend of June 27th and 28th,
bicycle racers from around the southeast will converge on Gwinnett
County with two thoughts in mind, first and foremost to help “ease
the burden and find a cure” for those suffering with Parkinsons
Disease, and to claim a portion of the over $3,000 prize purse.
Frazier Cycling, with the Gwinnett Sports Commission and Top View
Sports will join forces to host the two days of bike racing. Top
View Sports will produce the Saturday, June 27th road race in Barrow
County. Day two will take place on the beautiful campus of Georgia
Gwinnett College, which has been a venue of the Allgood Cycle For
Parkinsons all four years. The Sunday race at Georgia Gwinnett
College in Lawrenceville is also a very spectator friendly venue to
view bike racing, up close and personal, as cyclists will wiz by at
speeds between 25 to 30 miles an hour on the 0.8 mile criterium
course.
In the past three years, Frazier Cycling has raised over $10,000 for
the Georgia Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association
through the Allgood Cycle For Parkinsons event. This year’s event is
included in the Georgia Cycling Gran Prix, Georgia’s newest bike
race points series which includes 12 events between February and
August. “We have two objectives, put on a top quality race event for
local and regional cyclists and raise awareness and funds for the
American Parkinsons Disease Association,” states Cathy Frazier of
Frazier Cycling. “And while it may seem that cycling and Parkinson's
Disease are not related, there is currently, an innovative research
study that proves that cycling does indeed reduce the symptoms of
PD.”
An estimated 1.5 million Americans have Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's is a slowly progressive brain disorder resulting in the
loss of dopamine production. Dopamine is the neuro-transmitter
responsible for aiding in body movements. Symptoms include slowness
of movement, tremor, muscle stiffness, and postural instability. To
date there is no cure.

will lead rides and scavenger hunts on the trails. Throughout the
week-long camp the girls will improve their skills at avoiding
obstacles and using teamwork to solve trail puzzles. The girls will
also practice using GPS equipment and spotting wildlife such as
salamanders. Campers meet every day at Elachee at 9:00AM and ride,

The Roswell Department of Transportation is
installing Roswell's first bike box. (Trish's Note: It's on
Riverside at the intersection of Dogwood)
What is a bike box?
The bike box is an intersection safety design to prevent bicycle/car
collisions, especially those between drivers turning right and
bicyclists going straight. It is a green box on the road with a
white bicycle symbol inside. It includes green bicycle lanes
approaching and leading from the box.
Why are bike boxes being installed? The main goal is to prevent
collisions between motorists turning right and cyclists going
straight. It's all about visibility and awareness. At a red light,
cyclists are more visible to motorists by being in front of them. At
a green light, the green bike lane
through the intersection reminds motorists and cyclists to watch for
each other.

Pacesetter Steel News From Pacesetter Steel: Chris Brown won the Avery Trace Pro,1, 2 race this past weekend! Brown had some good competition with teams such as Myogenesis, Warp9/ Tristar, Krystal, and Texas Roadhouse, but in the end, he wound up claiming the number one spot. Brown got in a breakaway with three other riders from Krystal, Myogenesis, and Warp9/ Tristar. On the last climb of the day, Brown attacked for a final time and dropped the rest of the break to take the heroic solo victory! Nice job to Chris!

6-25-2009 Cycle for Parkisons Race Note The Saturday, June 27th Cycle For Parkinsons road race will take place in Gwinnett County, not Barrow County/Winder as was originally advertised. Start/Finish for Saturday will be at Alcova Elementary School - 770 Ewing Chapel Road, Dacula, GA 30019. The change was made a few weeks ago, but evidently there are still some older race flyers out there. Thank you. Pete Sherrard, Gwinnett Sports Commission. Trish's Note: Please support this great race for a great cause!!
Warning at the Brewery! If you ride from the Bud Plant in Cartersville, Listen Up! Employees have recently seen people "dropping trou" along Busch Drive and near the brewery late. If you need to heed the call of nature, please stop at one of the gas stations or fast food places before the brewery. If you just have to go, do it way, way away from Busch Dr. and the brewery. We don't want to lose the privilege of parking there. No one wants to see your naked backside, especially the general public! S
Cycle for Parkinson's Wants The Ladies to Register! Don't forget that Cycle for Parkinsons in Gwinnett County is this weekend. Cathy Frazier, the promoter, says that very few women are registered.
