October 2009

10-1-2009 2010 Calendar I've already had some inquiries about the 2010 calendar. I will usually start posting races around Nov. 1 and update again around Jan. 1 and Feb. 15.. The calendars will change drastically between now and then, so I don't put them up until they are somewhat stable.

Last Roswell Ride TONIGHT From Bike Roswell:  Come ride with Bike Roswell and the Thursday Night Crowd for a FREE (donations accepted) police supported ride. That's right the traffic lights will be manned to allow us to ride through and get back before dark. The ride leaves from Riverside Park 575 Riverside Road, Roswell, GA 30075 at 6PM sharp! There is a cost. So your support $5 or
whatever you can give makes a big difference. We will roll out and tay together until the climb up Eves. The RPD will be manning the
stop lights to let us through and man the return light at HWY 120 and Willeo on the downhill. So pack the bike tonight in the car for a joyous final ride of the weekly rides of 2009. This is a great ride after 6 GAP or Augusta Half Ironman or a great way to enter the off season. If you're not riding you're ....

Beautiful 21 and 26 mile options along the River flats and up the hills with 1500+ ft of climbing. Beautiful neighborhoods and scenery.

King and Queen Ride The Dunwoody King and Queen ride will not be held again this year because of the fading daylight. It will resume in the spring.

10-2-2009 CVV Autograph Session From Roswell Bikes: Autograph Session with Christian Vande Velde
One of the world's top cycling talents and Garmin-Slipstream team leader Christian Vande Velde, along with pro cycling commentators Robbie Ventura and Joe Silva, will be at Roswell Bicycles on Saturday, Oct. 10th at 12:30PM for an autograph session! Christian, Robbie and Joe are flying into town to participate in the AT&T Beat the Heat Challenge, a multisport extravaganza in Ellijay, GA and to show support for the 2010 Tour de Georgia. Christian and Robbie are picking up their Felt bikes for the event at Roswell Bicycles and will stay a short time with us to sign autographs and spend a little time with their fans. We suggest you get here early on Saturday for the autograph session.

Arrowhead Work Party From SORBA OMBA: The first major work party for the new trail system at Arrowhead will be on Saturday, Oct. 17th at 9 a.m. The corridor has been flagged and we will be clearing the path. The place is currently a massive jumble of downed trees and underbrush so this is a big undertaking. Please come help us get this project started right. Please bring water, gloves, sturdy shoes, bug spray, water, and any appropriate tools that you might have. The OMBA chapter will supply food and drinks.

This is the first of several work days that will occur throughout the winter, so if you can't make this one you will have other opportunities. We plan to have the first loop of the new system open for riding before summer of next year. Bike Tech of Macon will also be hosting a beginners and advanced riding clinic on Sunday at the Georgia Industrial Children's Home.
Don't forget about the Middle Georgia Mountain Bike Festival and the Dirty Dauset Duathlon on Nov. 14th and 15th.

10-8-2009 Beat the Heat Cancelled?? Roswell Bicycles is reporting on Facebook that the Beat the Heat ride has been cancelled. I cannot confirm this as their website is still up. "The Christian VandeVelde Autograph session and Beat the Heat Ride have both been cancelled this weekend. Sorry if any of you have worked your schedules around this, but we were just informed a moment ago that the ride was cancelled and the Pro's would not be coming to town as a result."

Trish's note: I have gotten several reports from reliable sources that this ride has been cancelled. Maybe the organizers will put something up on their site---or take it down.

10-9-2009 Blanket's Creek Improvements From SORBA Woodstock: Blankets Creek to get better parking lot amenities via County Commissioners/Park Bond
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2009 AT 8:01AM
Thanks to the park bond referendum that Cherokee County voters approved last November and with help of Karen Bosch - County Commissioner, Blankets will have better amenities. The county commissioners approved this week the purchase of the land next door to Blankets. This is the 5 acre tract located between Blankets Creek Parking Lot and Sixes Presbyterian Church. This will allow parking lot expansion, permanent bathrooms, pavillion, etc... A big thanks to Karen Bosch for making Blankets Creek even better!

Here is the original Cherokee Tribune Article.

Chris Baker Memorial Ride From Outback Bikes:  It has been a year since our good buddy Chris passed after being hit by a car. In his honor we are meeting at the Little 5 Points store on Sunday October 18th at 9am for the Sunday Ride that he lead.
Chris had another passion other than Cycling and that was rescuing feral cats. A donation to the Atlanta Humane Society would be welcomed.

SCT Partial Reopen From atlbike.org:  According to details provided by the Chain Station, the SCT is now open from Weddington Rd to the East.  Bypassing the current detour is easy.
From the caboose, head south to Oak St. ~1blk
Rt to Traffic Light, cross GA92, descend hill (watch speed) to bottom.
"T" into Dallas St, Rt merges w/ Weddingto to the left.
Short climb to the Silver Comet Trail.
The Brushy Mtn tunnel is probably still very muddy. Use caution, slow speed in this area. Slow speed will save on cleanup time too.

Don't forget that you can always purchase photos including the original high resolution digital download from my site at http://sadlebred.smugmug.com. If I can say so, these are some of the best cyclocross photos I've gotten--Ever--beautiful venue, great natural light!

Lost Wheelset at 3 Gap Email Christian Leask cleask@gmail.com (Trish's note: The wheels were lost on Saturday near the Rock Pile/3 Gap in Dahlonega. " Went to the gaps this morning and got throttled by a pretty darn cold rain storm, which I naturally hadn't packed
for. Long story short, got back to the car, which was parked just up from the rock pile and in a hypothermic state, forgot to put the front wheels in the trunk. We left them right around 11:00 am on Saturday morning. One  was a Campagnolo Scirocco G3 and the other was a brand spanking  new Edge 45 Clincher with a DT 240s hub, black spokes and a Maxxis  Re-fuse tire. Both of them front wheels.

Paulding SORBA News Hello volunteers, Let me start by saying I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. We here at Paulding SORBA sustained a lot of damage from the storms that occurred on 9/21-22. We are going to need a lot of assistance digging out over the next few months. This is where all of you come in, we are initiating the process of rebuilding the damaged trails along with continuing our regular trail building efforts. We'll be meeting Saturday, 10/24/2009 at 4 p.m., at the Hiram trail head of the Silver Comet. We plan on dispersing from there in groups to start rebuilding 3 different bridges and one natural creek crossing. The plan is to car pool to the work sites to prevent having too many vehicles parked in the remote areas along the Comet.

Please stay tuned to our Facebook page for more details over the next few weeks. If you're able to attend your assistance is deeply appreciated as we suffered an overwhelming amount of damage.  Scott Martin - Trail Director Paulding SORBA 770-820-9201
P.S. The dirt on the missing dirt:
Silver Comet Side Trail
The section between Hiram and Weddington will remained closed until the county is able to rebuild this section where the landslide occurred. The creek crossing just past the sewage treatment facility, (Turd Creek), was completely washed out and we will replace it with a reroute that is more sustainable. 3 separate bridges, (Sweet Nothing, Broke Nose and Buster's Revenge) were all uprooted and will have to be replaced.

Sara Babb About 1/3 of this beautiful trail was submerged when the dam for Braly Lake burst which caused a land slide along the sewage right of way behind the park. Approximately 30' of sewage line washed away releasing raw sewage into the park and adjacent area. Think parts per million folks, the entire park was submerged and the sewage line was repaired quickly. Once we're able to get in there and rebuild it'll be safe.

Mt. Tabor All I can say WOW! No damage so it's open for business, get out and ride. Scott Martin - Trail Director Paulding SORBA
Dig, Ride, Smile

Silver Comet Car Breakins There was a car broken into the morning of 10-18 at the Tara Drummond trailhead. Be careful! Put your valuables in your trunk, and take your wallet with you!

Ft. Yargo CX Cancelled No word on why, but the Ft. Yargo CX race has been cancelled. :(

Greenville Named Bicycle Friendly City Prestigious award honors City’s efforts to promote bicycling

GREENVILLE (SC) The League of American Bicyclists has honored Greenville with its prestigious Bicycle Friendly Community award. Greenville joins Columbia and Spartanburg as South Carolina's only Bicycle Friendly Communities. The League of American Bicyclists’ mission is to promote bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation and work through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. Greenville was granted the bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation for four years and the League of American Bicyclists will provide the City with feedback on what it can do to make Greenville even more bicycle-friendly. Announcement of the Bicycle Friendly Community designation comes at an ideal time as the City plans to begin a comprehensive Bicycle Master Plan study in January 2010.

The City began its Bicycle Friendly Community initiative, named Bikeville in 2006 with a City Council resolution endorsing the League of American Bicyclists Action Plan for Bicycle Friendly Communities. Bikeville is a committee of volunteers comprised of City staff, engineers, planners, retailers and advocates who collaborate on efforts to encourage and educate bicyclists, and the plan established specific goals that ranged from installing bicycle racks on all Greenlink buses to celebrating National Bike Month every May.

Over the past five years, the City has installed eight miles of bicycle lanes and there are currently 10 miles of paved bicycle trails throughout the city. The City plans to install an additional five miles of bicycle lanes on the following streets within the next year: Spring Street, Falls Street and portions of Broad Street; Washington Street, from the Amtrak Station to the McBee Avenue intersection; Church Street, from Augusta Road to University Ridge and Fairforest Way, from Laurens Road to Mauldin Road. The City also has a Bicycle Parking Ordinance that requires most new developments which provide vehicular parking to also provide bicycle parking and in 2008, City Council passed a Complete Streets resolution which ensures that all roadway users are accommodated in new road construction projects.

The City submitted its Bicycle Friendly Community application in August 2009. The application was carefully reviewed and scored by a committee, which also consulted with local cyclists in the Greenville community. Communities are judged in five categories, which the League of American Bicyclists refers to as the Five Es: Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement and Evaluation & Planning. A community must demonstrate achievements in each of the five categories in order to be considered for an award.

According to Bill Nesper, director of the Bicycle Friendly Community Program for the League of American Bicyclists, the award is presented only to communities with remarkable commitments to bicycling and is a national recognition of the City’s “tremendous efforts to create a truly Bicycle Friendly Community.”

If we start at noon, we should be finished by 12:30 - plenty of time for Juniors to make final prep for their race. Can spend more time with folks racing other than Juniors. Oriented to beginners, but all are welcome. If you are not sure of your techniques you may just learn something! Lamar
