September 2009
9-1-2009 Outback Rides Start Times From Mark King: The
Outback Ride from Little 5 Points has announced the fall start
times: /2 - 6:30pm, 9/9 - 6:15pm, 9/16 - 6:15pm, 9/23 - 6pm, 9/30 -
6pm,10/7 thru 10/28 - 5:45pm, 10/28 will be the last ride until DST
2010. It will be sad.
Yellow River Work Party From SORBA GATR: We will have a GATR
work party at Yellow River on Saturday Sept 26 from 9am until noon.
The plan will be to remove sand from some corners, cut back foliage,
and clean up limbs and such from tree fall.
Its VERY important that we have as much turnout as possible. A large
turnout goes a long way in our lobbying with the county for the
opportunity to do club trail work at ALL of the parks. So even if
you are only available for a portion of the time - please show up,
30 minutes of volunteer effort is better than zero.
9-2-2009 Looking for a Massage Therapist? Are you looking for
a massage therapist? Look no further than Kelly Kennedy, a
Southeastern Cycling advertiser! She is great! I had a massage with
her, and she really understands cyclists' troublespots. She was able
to work the kinks out of my bad back as well. I already have another
massage scheduled for next week! I'll report back. You can schedule
your massage with Kelly by emailing
kkmassagetherapy@gmail.com or calling her at 770-714-6019.

9-10-2009 Sope Creek Warning From SORBA and the CRNRA: To all
shop owners, forum mods (here and elsewhere), team members, members
of other clubs: Please help me get the word out that trail riding in
the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) is not
permitted except at Sope Creek -- on the Main double track trail. As
long as letters like the one below continue to pour into the NPS
office, we will NOT get additional access at Sope Creek or anywhere
else in this NPS unit or any other in the Southeast. YES-- it's THAT
important! Please pass my contact info to anyone who has any
questions about where they can / cannot ride. If they kick back and
say they don't care, then please find out where they ride and approx
time of day and forward that info to Daniel_R_Brown@nps.gov and
Scott_Pfeninger@nps.gov. We HAVE to stop this rogue activity and if
folks are not going to listen to the warnings from us, then they
obviously need additional encouragement from the Rangers.
Email from Dan Brown, CRNRA Superintendent (who is pushing increased
mtn bike access in the CRNRA) to me this morning and letter from a
concerned resident near Hyde Farm (Hyde Farm is NOT open to ANY
bikes presently):
"As you can see from the message below, we need your help getting
the word out that mountain bikers need to stay on authorized
trails. It makes it difficult to consider expanding bicycle
access elsewhere in the park. Thanks for working with us on this.
Dan Daniel R. Brown Acting Deputy Regional Director
National Park Service - Southeast Region Atlanta Federal
Center - 1924 Building
100 Alabama Street, S.W. Atlanta, GA 30303
Folks, My husband Dan and I were hiking last Thursday down Mulberry
Creek, a tributary of the Chattahoochee, along a beautiful
little footpath from Hyde Farm that crosses the creek in several
places before running into the River. We were astonished and
surprised over how many bike tracks we saw on that little path,
especially since we had a torrential rain just the Sunday
before. There must be lots of
mountain bikers illegally using the existing walking trails at will
(nobody to stop them) in the Johnson Ferry North Unit of the CRNRA,
and then they continue up the tributaries wherever they can find a
semblance of a path. If these mountain bikers will so blatantly go
where they are definitely off limits, whatever can possibly stop
them when there are hundreds of bikers allowed to build and
play on trails on Johnson Ferry North? There is no way that the NPS
has enough law enforcement to "Preserve and Protect" and
police this environmentally sensitive and historic area. And the
notion that the bikers will police themselves is laughable, since
they can't do it so far.
Thought you'd like to be aware of these incidents."

flooding out there! www.ajc.com,

good coverage. Use common sense and ride the trainer! Hopefully, we
will be able to put our kayaks and canoes away later this week!

9-23-2009 Tour De Flood My husband and I did a 20+ mile ride
around Smyrna, Buckhead, and Vinings today.
I
took lots of photos. The flooding and destruction was amazing
and sad. Be VERY careful riding out there! Some streets are still
blocked, have trees across them, or are slick from being flooded.
A truck and car are under water on Woodland Brook in Vinings. The
Buckhead Bellyache, Six Flags ride, and several other rides use this
road.
SILVER COMET CLOSED IN PAULDING! By order of the Paulding
County Sheriff's Office,
The Silver Comet Trail (and the side trail) are hereby closed until
further notice from the HIRAM TRAILHEAD to the TARA DRUMMOND
TRAILHEAD. This has been done due to the significant damage and
potential safety risks caused by the recent floods.
Trish's Note: RESPECT THIS AND DO NOT RIDE OUT THERE! SORBA
Paulding reported that there are major mudslides and that part of
the trail is buckling from the water. It's NOT SAFE!
Big Creek Work Party From RAMBO: RAMBO is having a Work Party
this Saturday to clear debris and trees and do whatever is needed to
help re-open the trail system. 9am at front parking lot. Hoping no
rain or very little between now and then so we can get out trails
back asap! thanks for your support! Bob Grieco RAMBO DUDE
9-24-2009 Avoid Columns Dr. This is from Cobb County
Commissioner Bob Ott: All,
Please pass along to everyone that Columns Drive suffered severe
flooding and most of the homes along the river side and the golf
course side suffered damage from the flooding. The county evacuated
about 100 people Monday night. The bridge over Sope Creek was
finally passable around 7 Tuesday morning. The county is continuing
cleanup so it would be in everyone's best interest if folks stayed
away until we are done. The Park is closed at the Columns Drive end
until the cleanup is finished. While I have been out both on Columns
and over in Vinings helping folks in the District recover they have
asked that we try to keep people off the streets so they can get
cleanup and repair crews in to speed their recovery. The county has
placed barricades on Cochise in Vinings to help over there. Since
there are so many residents off of Columns we have had to keep the
street open.
Please pass along to the cycling groups that I would appreciate
everyone's help in letting the folks along Columns get their lives
back together before coming back to use the road for training or
rides.
Thanks, Bob Ott Commissioner, District 2
Chicopee is Open! From SORBA Gainesville: The trails at
Chicopee will be opened Thursday morning, 9/24! There are a couple
of trees still down on Copperhead and one tree down on the Coyote
Loop but the trail tread is in good shape and is ridable. A couple
of the bridges were under water but are still intact. The boardwalk
coming off the powerline crossing before the first high bridge was
washed about 10 - 12 feet from where it should have been but it has
been moved back into place. There are still some small limbs and
debris scattered about so if you're out there riding please help out
by removing a few of the them. If everyone that rides will take the
time to remove just a couple small limbs off a section of trail then
the whole trail system should be cleaned up in a day or two. A big
THANKS to Scott Beam, Fast Norma Rainwater and Robi Johnston for
helping to get the trails open again! Steve Johnston Secretary -
Gainesville SORBA
Mt. Tabor Trail Paulding SORBA reports that the Mt. Tabor
trail is open.
Sope Creek Closed Charles Myrick, the CRNRA trail steward,
reports that the trails at Sope Creek are closed, and the National
Park Service has locked the gates. That area experienced significant
flooding.
Blankets Creek is CLOSED Yes, Blanket's Creek is closed for
the forseeable future (maybe a month??). It's under--yes under--Lake
Allatoona right now, and the lake hasn't hit its highest point yet.
Silver Comet Update The Paulding County Sheriff has said that
the Comet will be closed from the Hiram Trailhead to the Tara
Drummond Trailhead for 3-4 days until they can clear the mudslides
off of it.

I highly recommend Kelly Kennedy of KK Massage. I had a sports
massage with her on Monday, and it felt so good to get all of the
knots worked out of my back and legs! You can reach her at
