Cobb Bike and Pedestrian Plan The Cobb County Department of
Transportation has completed its 15-month planning project the
Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvement Plan which identifies where Cobb
County can improve conditions for bicycling and walking and identify
a strategy for investing in those improvements over
time. Bicycling and walking are important modes of transportation in
Cobb County's future. Whether to help beat the high price of gas, to
enjoy the benefits of physical exercise or just for fun, more and
more people are seeking safe places to walk or bicycle in Cobb
County.
The plan examines the need for physical infrastructure, including
shared use paths, sidewalks, and on-street bike lanes. It also
examines Cobb County's existing planning policies, ordinances, and
development regulations to understand how these practices assist or
impede bicycling or walking in Cobb County. A portion of the study
is dedicated to developing a Safe Routes to School Program for Cobb
County. This county-wide program provides individual Cobb County
schools with a tool-kit to enable more students and parents to walk
or bike to school safely from nearby neighborhoods. In
addition, the plan considers options for an extension of Cobb
County's popular Silver Comet Trail toward the Chattahoochee River
and a connection to Fulton County's trail system. Such a connection
could be a link in a trail of over 100 miles, stretching from
Alabama to Stone Mountain. The plan develops three potential
alignments for the trail extension and recommends a preferred
alignment for more detailed development.

Car Free Day in Atlanta From a mailing list. Sunday afternoon
May 23 could be one of the biggest cycling events Atlanta has
organized. Atlanta Streets Alive (http://www.atlantabike.org/atlantastreetsalive)
is a street festival where cars are excluded from the streets, and
turned over to the people. This is modeled on Bogota's Ciclovia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciclov%C3%ADa)
where a couple of million people come out each Sunday to exercise
and socialize on 70 miles of city streets closed to motor traffic.
The cycling community has long sought to gain political support for
cycling. This event seems to be the opening of that door: both the
mayor and our city council president are excited about what Atlanta
Streets Alive could do for quality of life in Atlanta. On the
website, you can find a video of Ciclovia and the proposed route
map. This ride is free and open to all whether on bike or not, but a
bike is probably the best way to experience this.

USA Crits Athens, GA – The USA CRITS Speed Week Series begins
in Athens on April 24 and showcases bicycle racing in three states
ending up in Sandy Springs, Georgia on May 2. This year’s series
will host the best criterium racers in the world with a solid line
up of USA CRITS Division 1 Teams in attendance.
THE RACES
Athens, Georgia – April 24 – The series kicks off at one of the best
criteriums in the nation, the Terrapin Twilight, on Saturday, April
24. Now in its 31st year, this event has received numerous
accolades, most recently named by Outdoor Magazine as one of the
“Best Outdoor Events in the Nation.” As the home to REM, the B-52’s,
and Widespread Panic, the Athens culture is also cultivated by being
the home of the University of Georgia.
Roswell, Georgia – April 25 – From Athens the series heads to
Roswell for the Historic Roswell Criterium in the heart of old
Roswell and a cycling tradition in the south for 14 years. Racers
come to Roswell with some of the same ambitions as the first
settlers of this town north of Atlanta on the Chattahoochee River,
to take home some of the areas gold, first mined in 1928.
Beaufort, South Carolina – April 27 – After a travel/rest day the
event races to this picturesque coastal town for the Beaufort
Memorial Cycling Classic . This city has served as the backdrop for
films such as Forrest Gump, The Great Santini, The Big Chill, GI
Jane, Platoon and Forces of Nature – to name just a few! Beaufort
offers an old world back drop to the fast paced excitement of
racing.
Walterboro, South Carolina – April 28 – A short drive from Beaufort,
Walterboro has become a favorite USA CRITS Speed Week stop for
cyclists and event staff. From a rich history, to being the artistic
center for South Carolina, to an appreciation of natural treasures,
the City of Walterboro is where the Lowcountry begins and cyclist
reach the high point of the Speed Week series. The race finishes
down the long narrow downtown street in this diverse community that
is a melting pot of culture and history.
Spartanburg, South Carolina – April 30 – From the southern
Lowcountry feel of Walterboro to the bustling foothills of the Blue
Ridge Mountains, Speed Week is hosted by the first city in South
Carolina to receive the designation as a “Bicycle Friendly
Community” by the League of American Wheelmen. As a part of Spring
Fling, one of the Upstate’s largest outdoor street festivals, the
crowds increase as the night rolls on.
Dilworth Community of Charlotte, North Carolina – May 1 – Hosted by
the Dilworth Community, Charlotte’s first streetcar neighborhood and
voted as the Best Neighborhood in Charlotte, the Dilworth Criterium
is the oldest event of the Speed Week series celebrating 37 years in
2010. As the only Speed Week race not in a downtown setting, and
held in conjunction with Dilworth’s “Go Green Festival” this
Saturday afternoon race is no walk in the park for the cyclist that
compete on this very challenging course around Latta Park.
Sandy Springs, Georgia – May 2 – The Finals of Speed Week is a Race
to the Arts in the Global BMW Sandy Springs Challenge. Set in the
heart of Sandy Springs, Georgia’s seventh largest city and located
just north of the thriving metropolis of Atlanta, the Race to the
Arts festival allows you to enjoy a fantastic Spring day. Bringing
together outstanding artists from all over the country with the
enthusiastic art buying community of Sandy Springs and her
neighbors, the Race to the Arts features dozens of the region’s
finest painters, photographers, sculptors, leather and metal
craftsmen, glass blowers and more! The final art of Speed Week is
drawn on this 6 corner course that is a true test of criterium and
cycling skills.
THE TEAMS
The 2010 edition of Speed Week has attracted teams focused on
American criterium racing- teams strategically designed to produce
results. As a group they represent the most tactical racers in the
world, pitted against each other in a high speed chess game on
wheels. With the removal of two way radio communications to team
managers for 2010, riders will be forced to communicate between
themselves and team management the old fashion way. This strategical
side show of 2 second instructions every lap (or minute) may prove
as important to winning as going fast. No more hiding behind the
clip board to call in the plays, the playbook may be open source
verbal commands between riders and managers or secret coded messages
or nods among friends. Whatever the tactics, the 2010 Speed Week
teams represent the best head to head criterium racing athletic
tacticians to take to southern streets.
Team Mountain Khakis fueled by Jittery Joes -With 2009 USA CRITS
Champion, Mark Hekman, and a well recruited supporting cast of young
faces and wiley veterans, the team will, of course, be planning to
beat the pants off anyone not dressed in Mountain Khakis. In
“shorts”, this year with some added go from Jittery Joes Coffee this
team that placed second in 2008 and won the 2009 USA CRITS Team
Competition has no plans to relinquish this spot.
United Healthcare Pro Cycling Team presented by Maxxis – This new
squad for 2010 has some old and new favorites on their roster. With
horsepower from Tasmania in Karl Menzies, USA CRITS U-25 superstar
Jake Keough (of the Keogh clan), and flamboyant Californian
speedster Eric Balevav along with a group of 8 riders, this team has
insured that they will be able to take care of the competition.
Jamis/Sutter Home Men’s Cycling Team presented by Colavita – Several
individual riders from this team have more criterium wins than most
teams. With the international racing abilities of Alejandro Borrajo
from Argentina and Frank Travieso from Cuba (the 2007 USA CRITS
Champion),plus the addition of two Argentinean strong men, this team
will leave no breakaway safe, with or without a team member. Having
raced the early season in South America, the team will help redefine
hard-fast Spring time criterium racing in America.
Kenda Pro Cycling presented by Geargrinder – Presenting a
experienced maximum pressure filled squad of 8, Kenda has the
experience in Chad Hartley, the speed in Luca Damiani, and a bit of
the unknown in Nick Keough (from a family with enough talented
racers to field a basketball team), to blow out the competition.
Team Hotel San Jose – With the 2009 Twilight and Texas Tough winner,
Heath Blackgrove, the return of Sean Sullivan, and Carlos Vargas –
winner of 2009 Superweek, this amateur team may have more room keys
to wins than most PRO squads. As another team covering the odds with
8 riders, check out time may be early for the competition.
Richmond Pro Cycling – As a city based team, Richmond Pro Cycling is
a bit different to its approach to elite American racing. The team
operates as a Civic Leadership Corps that develops young, educated,
elite-level cyclists into community ambassadors, mentors, and role
models over a 7 month season. By channeling their energy towards
others they develop community leaders for the future. This community
team work has paid off as the team consistently finds its way into
top finishing positions.
Team Haymarket – Tucked away in northern Virginia, far enough from
DC to have some of the best bike riding areas in America, but close
enough to DC to develop leaders in the sport of cycling, this
bicycle shop based team has ambitious plans to crack into America’s
elite cycling circles in 2010.
TEAM CRCA-Foundation The Century Road Club of America is the largest
and oldest cycling club in America. Started in 1895 the club based
squad has dealt with the poor road conditions (“roads need
scraping”) of Central Park in 1898 and now intends to take on the
American racing roads. With the largest pool of amateur talent in
America, the CRCA team can squeeze out some wins for the big apple.
Other men’s teams to attend include – Team Type 1, Bahati Racing,
and two Georgia based elite amateur squads – Locos Cycling Team and
Ion–United Healthcare
WOMENS
Top American women’s teams attending Speed Week include Colavita,
BMW/Bianchi, Team Type 1 and Vanderkitten, plus the USA CRITS
Division 1 team Treads.
Treads.com-Defined Fitness Training – What began as a small women’s
cycling club in 2006 in Kansas City has grown to a Denver-based
organization which includes a 14-woman pro/1/2 squad elite American
cycling team that also supports entry level cycling programs.

4-8-2010 WE Race It looks like the Carolinas are starting a
women's racing initiative. I haven't found a website for it, but you
can look for it on Facebook. It's called WE Race.
Sorella Women's Ride Deconstructed From Sorella
(Trish's note: This ride is for women only. Please leave your fellas
at home!) Have you been too shy/intimidated/ nervous/scared to come
out and try the Sorella Wednesday night ride out of Peachtree Bikes
in Buckhead? Join Sorellas Linda Demma and Leslie Shapiro as we
deconstruct the infamous Wednesday Night Women's Buckhead Ride.
We'll be meeting on Sunday afternoon, 4pm, April 11th in the parking
lot behind Peachtree Bikes.
We'll be heading out on the route used on the Wednesday night ride
and discussing all the sections of the route - tricky turns, where
to watch for traffic, where to ride single-file, where to watch out
for the sprint, and discussing the climbs and descents before we get
to them. We'll be stopping and regrouping often. This is a
terrific opportunity to learn the route and check out the hills
without the pressure of a group waiting for you or fear of being
dropped or getting lost. For people who are very familiar with the
ride, this is still a great opportunity to come and check out the
route. I recently rode some sections and noticed some new potholes
on the descents that you can check out on this ride since we'll be
going slow. We'll have time for questions and answers afterward, and
if there's interest, we'll grab dinner afterwards at either
Fellini's or LaFonda. This ride is open to all women - helmets and
road bikes required.
MTB Demo Day This Sat, April 10th, Outspokin Bikes will be
out at Big Creek with their demo fleet from 9am till 4pm. Come out,
enjoy the weather and the trails, as well as testing out a new ride.
The demo is free, but dont forget to bring your ID, shoes, and
helmet.

MTB Trails in Cobb County! Trish's Note: Oh yeah!!! Over the
last couple of years, several people in SORBA leadership have been
working with Cobb County Parks & Rec on a potential project located
off Mars Hill and Old Stilesboro. This is USACE property that the
county has a 25 year lease and plans to make it a park with up to 15
miles of hiking / mtn biking trails. This could be less than 15
miles and it all depends on things that are still dynamic with the
county and USACE and involve the creeks and roads on one side of the
property.
Trails have been flagged and we've been given the go order to start
corridor clearing. Al Brown is going to be the Trail Steward for
SORBA on this and thus will have lead on the work parties and day to
day stuff. Atlanta and Paulding chapters are collaborating on this
effort due to the location.
The first work party will be on May 15. Registration is required and
can be found at
http://www.sorbaatlanta.org/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=11
Please do not go ride on the property and explore unless you are on
the PERMITTED TRAIL ONLY, which is not very much right now and is
basically an open field with a couple very short sections in the
woods. We want to be responsible in our workings with Cobb County as
this is the first major project we've had with them and a few can
ruin it for all of us.
The one-hour women’s pro race is scheduled to start at 6:20 PM CT
and the 60-lap men’s pro event will roll off at 7:30 PM CT. Racers
will complete laps around the flat four-corner, .7-mile rectangular
downtown circuit that finishes with a slight uphill rise.
4-17-2010 Hogpen Update From the GA DOT:
HIGHEST ELEVATIONS OF STATE ROUTE 348/RICHARD RUSSELL SCENIC PARKWAY
CLOSED THROUGH MAY 14TH
White and Union Counties
GAINESVILLE — The Georgia Department of Transportation announces 0.6
miles of SR 348 is now closed to traffic due to pavement damage.
“At Hog Pen Gap this year’s wet, cold winter damaged the asphalt to
the extent that traffic cannot use the roadway at all. Because of
this damage, Georgia DOT closed part of Richard Russell Scenic
Parkway. Georgia DOT Engineers have assessed the damage and
developed a repair plan. DOT Maintenance Crews are scheduled to
begin repairs May1. Weather permitting, the repair work will be
finished by May 14 and the roadway will reopen to traffic. Our
preliminary cost estimate is $30,000 for the repair work. Until we
remove the broken asphalt and see the damage to the base that
supports the road we won’t know the extent of the damage or the cost
to repair it,” explained DOT Interim District Engineer, Todd
McDuffie.
SR 348 will be open to traffic to provide access to the trailhead at
Raven Cliff’s and to the Appalachian Trail on the White County side
of the state route. SR 348 in Union County will remain open to
traffic to Tesnatee Gap. The apex of the mountain remains closed.
Traffic cannot cross the mountain.
Hog Pen Gap’s elevation is 3,800 feet. It rates among one of
Georgia’s highest roadway elevations.
Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information
about this or any other construction project on interstates and
state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides
real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic
conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement
weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request
assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
More information is available at www.511ga.org.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a
safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports
Georgia’s economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its
environment. Additional transportation revenues are imperative to
grow and sustain Georgia's economic vitality and quality of life
through the 21st Century. Georgia is the 3rd fastest-growing state
in the nation, yet 49th in per capita spending on transportation.

Georgia Resident Selected for Nature Valley Pro Ride
Congratulations to Nancy!!!
The first four of the 12 riders on the Nature Valley Pro Ride men’s
and women’s teams have been selected, with the next two to be
determined in Oregon this weekend.
Women’s qualifiers are Kristen Meshberg of Lyons, Ill., from the
Hillsboro-Roubaix Road Race near St. Louis and Monroe, Ga.,
resident Nancy Jones, from the Rock Hill Spring Bicycle Classic
in South Carolina.
Jones, riding for Subaru Gary Fisher Road Cycling Team, is a past
Georgia state time trial champion who finished third in that
discipline at last year’s USA Cycling Masters Road National
Championships. Meshberg rides for the Flatlandia Cycling Team and
said she is “super excited” to be part of the Nature Valley Pro
Ride. “What a cool race and what a cool program” Meshberg said. “I
also am very appreciative for the opportunities that the Nature
Valley Grand Prix provides for women's cycling. Having a filled
women's field is fantastic.” Men’s qualifiers are Zach Garrett of
Sumter, S.C. and Lawrence, Kan., resident Joseph Schmalz of the
Mercy Cycling Team. Garrett races for U.S. Military Cycling. To
accept the Nature Valley Pro Ride invitation, he first had to
receive permission for time off from his commanders at Shaw Air
Force Base. “Once I told them how prestigious the Nature Valley
Grand Prix is, they were all ears and really happy for me,” Garrett
said. “I’m really excited about the opportunity. It’s just
incredible to allow a composite team to be formed and give amateurs
the opportunity to race against the pros.”
Nature Valley Pro Riders who are invited to compete in the Nature
Valley Grand Prix earn free entry to the race, generous travel
stipends, team clothing, housing, ground transportation, and staff
support for their composite teams. They also receive pro-level
recognition before, during and after the events, including pre-race
call-ups and participation in promotional and media appearances.
This weekend marks the next stop on the Nature Valley Pro Ride
national tour. The Cherry Blossom Classic presented by Waters Edge
Health and Wellness Center takes place Friday through Sunday in the
Portland, Ore., area. Qualifiers will be based on the final overall
standings in the three-day event that includes a road race, circuit
race, time trial and criterium. The other remaining Nature Valley
Pro Ride events are: Barrio Logan Grand Prix/Mark Reynolds San Luis
Rey Cycling Classic (May 1-2) in California, Bear Mountain Spring
Classic (May 16) in New York and Mt. Hamilton Classic Road
Race/Memorial Day Criterium (May 30-31) in California.

The Aussies invade Alabama and Fly away with the Sunny King
Criterium win
Anniston, AL: An Australian invasion flew through the streets of
Anniston, Alabama Saturday night (April 17) as cyclists from Down
Under finished 1st, 2nd and 5th at the Sunny King Criterium with the
powerhouse Fly V australia team placing riders in 1st and 3rd in the
men’s pro race. Ben Kersten (Fly V australia) piloted to victory
after Utah native Nicky Wangsgard (Roosters presented by Edge
Composite Wh) won the women’s pro event from a three-rider break.
The third of twenty-five races that comprise the National Racing
Calendar (NRC), the Sunny King Criterium was held under near perfect
weather conditions in front of more than 4,000 spectators that lined
the flat four-corner, .7-mile rectangular downtown circuit that
included a slight uphill rise before the finish. Amateur races were
held throughout the day prior to the men’s and women’s marquee
events that featured international fields boasting some of the
fastest sprinters in the domestic peloton. Entry fees were donated
to Relay For Life, a local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
For the first time, the Sunny King Criterium was streamed live on
the official race website, which was viewed by cycling fans around
the globe.
The sun was still shining brilliantly when the pro women rolled off
for their one-hour race and finished at twilight. Colavita/Baci
presented by Cooking Light, Team Vera Bradley Foundation and Team
Type 1 along with a sole rider from Team TIBCO/To The Top, U.S. U-23
(under age 23) criterium champion Samantha Schneider, animated the
race by launching frequent attacks that spawned short-lived moves in
addition to pocketing primes along the way. With ten laps to go, a
three- rider break – Wangsgard, Carla Swart (Team Vera Bradley
Foundation) and Jackie Crowell (Team Type 1) – escaped the field and
were not to be seen again. With five laps remaining, Team Vera
Bradley Foundation tenaciously blocked any pursuers. Having missed
the move, Colavita/Baci led the chase with three laps left. Two
riders from the field, including Schneider, tried desperately to
catch the trio ahead with two laps to go, but it was not to be.
Wangsgard made the first move into the final turn. Swart reacted and
nearly nailed back a fading Wangsgard, who was able to hold on for
the win. Crowell completed the podium.
The men’s sixty-lap race took place under the lights with solo
attacks starting after the opening lap, but never getting far from
attentive squads including Bahati Foundation, Kenda presented by
Gear Grinder, Jamis/Sutter Home presented by Colavita, Team Type 1
and the Fly V australia unit, the latter of which has dominated the
early season results. After a number of solo attempts failed, five
riders got a gap and were bolstered by four more men around twenty
laps into the race, but they were reabsorbed. Another break formed a
couple laps later containing last year’s Sunny King Crit winner,
Karl Menzies (United Healthcare presented by Maxxis), but it
shattered during a prime lap as did the field. The break reshuffled
after riders accessed who was in the move and a revitalized group
marched on. Further back, the pack seemed uninterested in the chase.
Even though more than half the race remained, with all the major
teams represented in the reformed fifteen-rider break, the gap
doubled from twenty-five seconds to fifty seconds.
Luis Amaran (Jamis/Sutter Home) and Alessandro Bazzana (Fly V
australia) leapt from the break with twenty-four laps remaining and
lapped the field with twenty-one laps to go. The rest of the break
caught the field a lap later. Although Amaran & Bazzana went off the
front again, they were hauled in. Kenda presented by Gear Grinder’s
Chris Monteleone opened a gap and dangled in front of the field for
nearly ten laps while his team manned the front. Mercifully, he was
reeled in with eight laps left. Slight gaps would open, but they
were swiftly negated.
With three laps to go, Ivan Dominguez took monster pulls for Amaran,
his Jamis/Sutter Home teammate. Again Dominguez was on the front
sacrificing himself when the bell rang signaling the final lap.
During the ensuing pack gallop, Kersten received a perfect lead-out
from Bazzana to take the win ahead of 2008 Sunny King Crit winner
Hilton Clarke (Bahati Foundation). Bazzana managed to hold on for
the show position.
“Once we took the lap, I was motivated for a sprint finish and Baz (Bazzana)
and I worked well together to ensure we arrived with the group. In a
testament to how well Baz is riding right now was that not only did
he lead me out perfectly, but he also held on to finish third,” said
Kersten. “There was a great atmosphere and I loved racing here. I’ll
definitely come back.” The Alabama Department of Tourism & Travel
selected the Sunny King Criterium as a top 10 event for the state of
Alabama for 2010. In addition to being an NRC event, the race is
part of the Southeast Women’s Cycling Series, Alabama Cycling
Association Points Series and The Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic
Road Series. Additional information is available at

sensation Matt Baranoski who will surely take on the big guys and do
himself proud. Our own Charles 'The Chaz' Rossignol and the East
Point Outlaw himself, Billy Santana will do battle with the big
boys.
Food will once again be provided by Cake Hag and will be as
wonderful as ever. No beer this year unfortunately, but we'll have
coffee brewing(our own 'Brakeless Brew'), and are working on brewing
our own iced tea. Racing kicks off at 3pm for racers, the main
program kicks off at 6pm for spectators. $5 Spectator entry $10 for
families
Morgan Falls Meeting Trish's Note: This is the only info. I
have on this.
Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area will conduct an
informational public meeting on May 12, 2010, regarding the proposed
Morgan Falls bridge and connecting trails. The meeting will be from
7:00 - 8:45 p.m. at the East Cobb Library in the Kroger shopping
center at the corner of Johnson Ferry Road and Lower Roswell Road
(4880 Lower Roswell Road, suite 510). The purpose of the meeting is
to provide information on the proposed project, the Environmental
Assessment process, the alternatives being considered, and the
Choosing by Advantages process that will be used to select the
preferred alternative. At this time a preferred alternative has not
been selected. A question and answer period will follow the initial
presentation. Public comments will be allowed as time permits, but
will not be recorded or compiled. The meeting is primarily
informational, to assure that interested parties have an opportunity
to understand the alternatives being considered and the process
being used to select the preferred alternative. The next
formal public comment period will occur when the draft Environmental
Assessment is released later this year. Sincerely,
Daniel R. Brown Superintendent
4-28-2010 Roswell Ride To All, What: Roswell Thursday Night
Ride (awesome flats on the river, challenging climbs 1500ft,
beautiful neighborhoods [you pass Chipper Jones’s house]) Where:
Riverside Park 575 Riverside Road, Roswell, GA 30075
When: 6:30 PM until September
Who: A group riders, B group riders, C group riders
Attention: Lake Charles is still closed go left at High Tower and
Pine Grove to Shallowford
Benefit: Fitness and discounts at Diesel Pizza on beer and food
We will start tomorrow’s ride at 6:30 with some changes – A Group
will continue on the same route we have been riding this year (left
from the parking lot and up the big climb in Martin’s Landing and
down Eves). The B Group will go right and start along the flats and
continue with last year’s route returning via Norcross and Grimes
Bridge.
The C Group will also go right to Martin’s Landing just minutes
after the B group BUT separate.
We NEED RIDE LEADERS! A ride leader is there to answer questions
provide guidance to riders that may be damaging the ride reputation,
but mostly to be a point person for the other riders on the ride.
Please step up and give some time to helping. If you are riding any
of the rides and see someone you don’t recognize then ask them if
they have a buddy. We need to insure that we are encouraging a buddy
system. We don’t want riders dropped and left to be lost. This is
the biggest complaint and the main reason new riders are
discouraged. Not everyone is inspired by being dropped. C group
needs to make sure they stop and gather slower riders before
proceeding. Any questions? If so call me. Eric Broadwell
