Meet the Performance Women's Team Meet Members of the
2010 Performance Bikes Women's Race Team Wed., Aug. 11.
As a bit of background, if you've surfed around the
PerformanceBike.com website, perused a recent catalog, or found
yourself in your local Performance Store this summer, you may have
noticed that Performance is sponsoring an Elite Women's race team
here in the Southeast in 2010. The goal for the team is to provide
Performance with a great way to expand their support for, and to
help to grow the cycling communities (especially women!) where they
are located. We encourage you to take a peek out at
http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Content_10052_10551_-1_Racing
for more info.
There are nine women on the Elite squad, four of whom currently live
in the Atlanta Metro area. On Wednesday, August 8th, 2010 several of
the team in the Atlanta area are going to be joining Roswell's
Performance Bikes Wednesday night ride as a chance to get to know
the North Georgia cycling community a bit better.
The ride will definitely NOT be a hammerfest!! :) We're coming out
to meet lots of folks and have fun! The ride is FREE of charge and
is a rolling 22 mile no-drop route. The ride starts from the
Performance Bikes Shop in Roswell (10502A Alpharetta Highway
Crossville Village Shopping Center, Roswell, GA 30076), meeting up
at 5:30 p.m., and on the road at 5:45. Post ride, we'll be doing an
informal Q&A and Meet & Greet. Topics could include questions on
racing, equipment, nutrition, fitness, balancing life and cycling,
or anything else of interest. We’d love to see lots of women there,
but also want to make sure that men know they are definitely welcome
too! Please feel free to call the Performance Shop at 770-587-5072

Assault on Brushy Mountain Cancelled From Paulding SORBA:
This event has been cancelled! Several factors have initiated this
decision:
1. Lack of interest (we only have 3 registered riders) 2. Lack of
access to specific portions of the course. The flooding from last
year destroyed several sections of the SCST resulting in Pauding
County having to depend on FEMA funding to repair those
sections.Instead of this event we will host Take a Kid Mountain
Biking and Festival at Mt. Tabor Park on October 2nd. There will be
more details announced soon.
Mountain Biking Basics Clinic From REI: Join Eddie and
Namrita O'Dea of the Topeak-Ergon racing team as they give an
introduction to the
basics of
mountain biking. They will share tips on equipment selection,
essential trail skills, nutrition, building fitness, and more.
Whether you're just thinking about getting into riding trails or are
looking to upgrade your gear, this course will cover what you need
to know before getting on your bike. This is a classroom course and
no riding will take place.

DESCRIPTION: A mountain bike race through the Long Cane Ranger
District of the Sumter National Forest that connects the Modoc,
Turkey Creek, Wine Creek, and Horn Creek trails using a combination
of paved and gravel roads. There are approximately 28 miles of
singletrack. Due to new start/finish location total mileage is just
under 70 miles this year. This is a low key, no stress fun event.
FOOD: Hot dogs/hamburgers will be provided after the race.
SWAG: If you register before Sept 6th you're guaranteed an SMC hat,
after Sept 6th you may or may not get one.
LIMIT: Race is limited to 125 racers! If the race does not sell out
early then day of registration will be allowed, with a $10 price
increase for each class.
CLASSES:
Male Under 30

Female 30-40
Female 40+
Singlespeed
Clydesdale
Cyclocross (UCI rules apply for a bike to be eligible)
AWARDS: Custom engraved pint glasses awarded to top 3 racers in each
class
SAG STOPS: There are three SAG locations approximately 15-20 miles
apart. Racers will actually hit SAG #2 twice, before and after
riding the 6 mile Horn Creek trail. SAGs will be stocked with water
and sports drink as well as some food. Racers will be given 3 large
ziplock bags to send items ahead to the SAG locations.
RAIN POLICY: There is no alternate date. If the trails are too wet
to race on without damaging them an alternate route will be used
which will bypass the trails using paved and gravel roads.
IMPORTANT TIMES: Check in/registration will open at 7:00am, and the
race will start at 9:00am. For safety reasons there will be cut-off
times at each SAG to ensure no one is on the course after dark.
OTHER INFO: Race will start with a controlled group ride out of
Hamilton Branch State Park. Once all racers are out onto the main
loop, the racers will be turned loose to ride their own pace. Racers
are REQUIRED to check in at each SAG (just make sure someone writes
down your number as you roll through). Failure to do so will get the
racer disqualified. This is a safety measure to ensure we know where
everyone is on the course.
All of this information will be posted on the SORBA-CSRA website in
the coming days. Questions can be directed to sumtercentury@gmail.com
A map and full route details with turn by turn directions will be
posted later tonight.

Atlanta Cycling Sidi
Sale (Trish's note: I'm a Sidi girl and wish I were in the
market for new Sidis right now....!!)
It's the first-ever SIDI Summer Sale, letting you slip your feet
into SIDI performance and comfort for 20% off the regular retail
price. It's never happened before, it may never happen again. And
it's for a very limited time. Visit either Atlanta Cycling store
between August 13 and August 22, 2010, and step into the best
upgrade a cyclist could want-one that will pay dividends with every
pedal stroke. That's something you can take to the bank. And keep
right on going to the finish line.
Ken Bike Law From Ken: I am the principal of KenBIKElaw.com.
I represent injured bicyclists. My law practice evolved from my love
of the bicycle as transportation, as art, as a recreational vehicle,
for fitness, for fun and for competition. The friends and culture
surrounding the bicycle have enriched my life. Too often, the
bicycle rider is treated unfairly by police, insurance adjusters,
judges and juries. By advocating for bicyclists, I get satisfaction
knowing that I am working to protect and increase their rights and
the rights of their families.
My experience includes writing and lecturing on bicycle law. I wrote
“Representing Injured Bicyclists” for the Georgia Trial Lawyer and
contributed to The Georgia Law Enforcement Pocket Guide and Georgia
Bike Sense. I co-founded a national association of bicycle lawyers
and accident reconstruction engineers.
As a community activist, I founded of Decatur Yellow Bikes, Inc., a
community bicycle program that recycled over 750 bicycles for free
community use. Fresh out of law school, I worked to establish
Bikeways along the Southern California coast. I am a member of, and
advisor to Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, Southern Bicycle League,
BikeDecatur and BRAG. I belong Adventure Cycling.
I am an international level masters road bike racer, and have
several national and state road racing championships. I ride Atlanta
and Georgia streets and roads daily.
I encourage cyclists involved in an accident to promptly call me for
a free consult concerning the legal issues, their rights, the claims
process, and the terms of employment.

Hunting/Riding at Bull Mtn. and Jake From the SORBA Forums:
For those of you who ride on the Bull Mtn and Turner Creek trails at
the Jake/Bull Mtn trail system outside Dahlonega, there's been a
significant change that you need to know about. Please spread the
word to your non-SORBA friends (why aren't they members?) and others
you meet out on the trail.
The Bull Mtn & Turner Creek trails (to the north/west of forest
service road FS28) have been in The Blue Ridge WMA for a very long
time - where hunting was only permitted on specific dates during the
fall & winter. So, from Sept thru December it was safe to ride those
trails (except on those specific dates), knowing that no one was
hunting in those woods.
However, The Blue Ridge WMA has officially been dropped by Georgia
DNR (budget cuts), and the National Forest land that was in the WMA
will now be managed for hunting like other general forest areas, - -
i.e., it will be open for the entire season for whatever species,
with no special "hunt dates".
What this means to you as a trail user is that from mid-September
thru December (and March thru May in the spring for turkey) there
will be hunting on those trails just like there has always been on
the Jake Mtn trails (south/east of FS28). As a courtesy to the other
user group (hunters) SORBA recommends that you do not begin riding
on any Jake/Bull Mtn trail during those months until 10:00 a.m.
Remember, those trails are designated multi-use - - and that
includes hunters too.
Another suggestion is that when you do ride during hunting season
(no matter where that is) is that you wear blaze orange - (the more,
the better) and bells are good too so you are making noise. Take
care this fall and have fun riding!
Georgia Bike Summit From the GA Bike Alliance: On Saturday,
October 9th in Savannah the Georgia Bikes Alliance will be
conducting the first annual statewide Bike Summit. Would you please
consider joining us in Savannah to help take bicycling advocacy in
Georgia to the next level? For the first time, advocates, business
leaders, recreational cyclists and commuters, elected officials and
staff from across Georgia will meet in a state-wide forum, setting
the stage for bicycling gains. We will network, collaborate,
educate, and empower advocates and attendees; identify common issues
in our local communities; and set priorities for Georgia Bikes
Alliance in 2011. Our Keynote Speaker will be Andy Clarke, President
and Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists. For
more information and to register, please go to
www.gban.org/GASummit2010.
