1-10-2010 CX Weekend & Photos I was really disappointed that I could not get to Cross-A-Nooga in Chattanooga, TN on Saturday. I heard the course was great both Sat. and Sunday and that everyone had a lot of fun. The roads in Cobb weren't the best, and I did not want to risk them at 7 am. I went to the Rome CX race on Sunday put on by the guys at Cycletherapy. A small but enthusiastic group of racers bundled up and did either the 60 or 45 minute race. Congratulations to Krista Eckhart-1st place Women's, Bob Kuhn (HUP United)-1st place Men's A/B, Josh Frank (Peachtree Bikes)-1st place SS. Two Sorella riders--Beth Gearhart and myself rounded out the Women's podium for 1st place. Beer was had by all after the race! Photos are up at http://sadlebred.smugmug.com.

Ronnie Bratcher (Aaron's) remounts and chases after Josh Frank (Peachtree Bikes) and another rider in the Rome CX Men's A/B race.

Blanket's Creek Closed til Further Notice From SORBA Woodstock:  Blankets Creek: Trails are closed due to freeze/thaw until further notice Now the big wait starts. This long freeze stretch we just had is finally coming to an end (fingers crossed). They say this has been the longest extended cold snap since the 1880s. Crazy I tell you. With the temps going back into the 40s, the big long dry out is going to take time. I predict it is going to take a couple of weeks to dethaw and dry out. Please be patient. Riding these trails when they are drying out from a deep freeze will severely damage them. We have a long list of cool trail projects in the pipeline for 2010. Please don't ruin it for us by making us fix the existing trails instead of building new ones. We all want to ride too...Thanks for your support, Jay Wilkes
President - SORBA Woodstock

Bump N Grind Out of ProXCT From Cyclingnews.com: Just when the US Pro XCT calendar seemed to be finalized, the six-race national-level series shrunk to a five-race series on Wednesday. The Bump 'n' Grind, in Birmingham, Alabama, which was to be round four on June 5, decided not to pursue UCI categorization, and because all US Pro XCT series events must be UCI-sanctioned, the race will no longer be part of the Pro XCT series in 2010.

"It was a surprise to me. It's not the end of the world, though, as the calendar is really packed," said USA Cycling's National Mountain Bike Development Director, Marc Gullickson to Cyclingnews, referring to the compilation of six World Cups, five US Pro XCT races, three Triple Crown events and the US National Championships that many of America's top cross country pros will attend throughout the season. "It's still going to be a great series."

The US Pro XCT has undergone several evolutions in the past three months. Originally slated for six rounds, the 2010 series was headed into its second year under the guidance of then-organizers the US Cup, who had licensed the series from USA Cycling.

In early December, the US Cup stepped down from its series organizing role, leaving USA Cycling with full responsibility for the series. Even with the two organizations seemingly headed in different directions, the US Cup agreed to maintain its UCI-categorized Fontana round as the season opener for what then became a four-round US Pro XCT. At the same time, the US Cup announced a new three-round, non-UCI sanctioned Triple Crown series designed to offer pros more prize money and additional opportunities to race.

In early January, USA Cycling added two more events to the US Pro XCT - the Mellow Johnny's Classic and the Sea Otter Classic - taking the total briefly back to six rounds.

USA Cycling's Mountain Bike Events Coordinator Kelli Lusk said that the Bump 'N Grind race is still going to occur on its scheduled date although it will be run without UCI points and therefore with no US Pro XCT affiliation. The race may instead be part of the National Mountain Bike Calendar or the American Mountain Bike Calendar (AMBC) - two other USA Cycling series that do not require races to be UCI-categorized.

"There will be a few less UCI points available in the States, and the East Coast will not be represented in the series. The latter is a bigger concern. Every year, there will always be some area that's left out," said Gullickson to Cyclingnews of the consequences of the news. In 2009, Windham, New York, and Mount Snow, Vermont, both hosted rounds of the US Pro XCT.

The East Coast will still host some top racing since Windham has stepped up to host a round of the UCI World Cup in August.

"I'm sure we'll make getting to the East Coast with the US Pro XCT a priority next year. At this stage, I think it's too late to submit a new race to the UCI. I don't think it's likely we can add another race this year," he said.

Organizers of the Bump 'n Grind have not yet been reached for comment.

Ride the Nature Valley Pro Races! Trish's Note: One of the qualifiers is Rock Hill, SC. Nature Valley Pro Ride Is Amateur Cyclists’ Chance Of A Lifetime Minneapolis (Jan. 13, 2010) – Six races sprinkled throughout the United States will comprise the 2010 Nature Valley Pro Ride, the qualifying events for amateurs to earn a trip to compete against the country’s top men and women professional bicycle racers at the Nature Valley Grand Prix. The Nature Valley Pro Ride will select the top amateur men and women to become part of a pair of composite Nature Valley Cycling Teams for the 12th annual edition of the premier stage race on the 2010 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar. The 2010 edition of the Nature Valley Grand Prix, held in East Central Minnesota and Western Wisconsin, runs June 16-20.

Rider invitations will be issued following the six stops on this national tour: Hillsboro-Roubaix Road Race (April 10) in Illinois, Rock Hill Spring Bicycle Classic (April 10-11) in South Carolina, Cherry Blossom Cycling Classic (April 23-25) in Oregon, Barrio Logan Grand Prix/Mark Reynolds San Luis Rey Road Cycling Classic (May 1-2) in California, Bear Mountain Spring Classic (May 15) in New York and Mt. Hamilton Road Race/Criterium (May 30-31) in California. Nature Valley Pro Riders who are invited to compete in the Nature Valley Grand Prix earn free entries to the race, generous travel stipends, team clothing, housing, ground transportation, and staff support for their composite teams. They will also receive pro-level recognition before, during and after the events, including pre-race call-ups and participation in promotional and media appearances.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an amateur to receive a ‘battlefield promotion’ to compete with the top professionals,” Nature Valley Grand Prix Executive Director David LaPorte said. ”Since its inception 11 years ago, the Nature Valley Grand Prix has emerged as the top women’s bike racing event and one of the top men’s races in the U.S.. The Nature Valley Pro Ride gives top U.S. amateurs a chance race in front of huge crowds, to be noticed by pro team managers and potentially to receive a pro contract.”

The Rock Hill Spring Bicycle Races, Cherry Blossom Cycling Classic, Barrio Logan Grand Prix and Mt. Hamilton Road Race/Memorial Day Criterium are all new to the Nature Valley Pro Ride for 2010. Hillsboro-Roubaix and the Bear Mountain Spring Classic return from the 2009 Nature Valley Pro Ride calendar, as does the San Luis Rey Road Race, which is partnering with the Barrio Logan Grand Prix to add a qualifying criterium this year. Rock Hill Spring Races Promoter Kim Deacon said becoming part of the Nature Valley Pro Ride marks a high point in his 30 years of organizing the event. “The prestige of being invited to affiliate with such a prominent event as the Nature Valley Grand Prix enhances not only our racer draw and participation, but also the recognition and importance of our race in the Southeastern U.S. racing calendar and in our local community,” Deacon said. “We have always prided ourselves for putting on a first-class and tough bicycle race. The recognition we are receiving from the Nature Valley Pro Ride is a nice confirmation of our work."

More details on the qualifying process can be found at: http://www.NatureValleyProRide.com

Silver Comet Status I rode the Comet on Monday. Other than the usual winter debris like pine straw and leaves, the trail was in good condition. The trail is closed at mile 14.5 in Hiram, but the detour is marked. Look for the paint markings and chevrons that say "detour." The detour is under 2 miles. It will take you back to the Comet before the Paulding Water Treatment Plant.

1-23-2010 Charlotte Happenings From  Charlotte Sports Cycling: 2010 Winter Short Track Mountain Bike Series

We had great turnout at the first race of the Winter Short Track Series. It was really fun seeing many new faces trying mountain bike racing for the first time, especially the junior boys and girls. Special thanks to all of the Dirt Divas, Chris and Isaiah, Paul, Santana, and other volunteers who came out to help. The course was a little muddy but held up well during the event. Amazingly, cyclo-cross bikes went first and second in the Super Sport race. I think that's the first time a cyclo-cross bike has taken home the gold at the Winter Short Track Series. Results from the first race are posted on www.charlottemtnbike.com . Great job to everyone who came out. Looks like last year's winning team, Revolution, under their new name, De Maine Cycling, has the lead for the team competition. Who will have the lead after race #2 this weekend?

As we get closer to the season, we are steadily locking in our programs and racing for the 2010 racing season. And first cab off the rank is Tuesday nights. We do have some changes, so be sure to take note of those :
Women's First Tuesday's - Held the first Tuesday of every month, Women will be the feature event of the evening. Thanks to Leigh Hopkins of Southeastern Women's Cycling (SEW) for hosting this event every month. The night will also be open to Masters and Beginners(D) category racers.
Steve Hill's Sprints - Held every second Tuesday of every month, Steve Hill will be around to host his sprint night, which was formerly held on Friday night. Racing is open for ALL categories.
Masters Third Tuesday's - Held every third Tuesday, masters night will be open for Master's, Women and Beginners racing categories. Thanks to John Dowd for continuing to host this event.
Pursuit Night - Held every fourth Tuesday, come down and get your pursuit on against the clock. Thanks to Tim Gallagher, who will once again be present to put ALL category racers in the pain cave.

There are a couple of 5th Tuesday's that are unaccounted for and at least one of those Tuesday's will include a brand new special event, which should be announced later on next week once we have the details finalized, and the thumbs up from the powers that be.

SEW Cycling Series Another race season is almost upon us, and we're gearing up to give women's racing a boost here in the southeast with the Southeast Women's Cycling (SEW) series! If you're not familiar with us, SEW is a grass-roots effort for women to grow the sport of women's cycling by providing an environment that is both challenging and fun. By working with promoters directly to increase their prize purses in exchange for providing a fair racing environment for women, we can show promoters that women's racing is strong in the Southeast, and that we deserve a place at each and every race.

Making its debut for 2010 is our Facebook Fan Page where you can follow the series, RSVP to races (and see if your competition is going) check out our new sponsors and upcoming programs. Of course we're still on Twitter and have an RSS Feed, so that's another way you can stay in touch with SEW-on-the-go throughout the year! The 2010 schedule is confirmed with six races throughout the southeast. To be considered part of the series, promoters must adhere to SEW's race criteria that's in place to make women's racing stronger and more competitive. Check out the new schedule here: http://sewcycling.squarespace.com/2010-calendar/  So get those base miles in, and we'll see you out on the road.

Race Clinic (Trish's note: This will probably be in late Feb.; no date has been set)  If you think you might be interested in attending this event, or have feedback on what you'd like to learn, please post here or email me at Carol at carolm@gmail.com. We are trying to see what interest there is out there for this event.  Jeff Hopkins is among the GABRA members who are putting this together. The clinic is open to men and women and is shaping up to cover the following (see below). Part of the clinic will be an actual mock race (men and women will be separate). We are planning on having this clinic up where the Tuesday night crit practice takes place in Marietta. Check back for further details!

To: Georgia Racers and Promoters

Thank you for a wonderful "ride" over the years. As most of you know, I have had the opportunity to be Head Official, Moto Official, Upgrade Coordinator and a racer in Georgia for many years. I have enjoyed working with riders, promoters, and helping to develop the sport both at the state level and regionally. It has been a pleasure to see riders develop from beginners to exceptional racers and from juniors into outstanding young men and women. Over the years I have joked with, yelled at, hopefully motivated, and, probably at one time or another, infuriated most of the racers and promoters in Georgia. My primary goal was always to improve the riders, improve the racing, and at all times to provide for the safety of the racers.

Some of the best times I can remember are at the races, standing on the sidelines, on my motorcycle watching the race from best seat in the house, or on the saddle of my bike. I count a good number of you as personal friends and I think it is time a share a decision I have made and try to explain why I have made it.

I have decided to not renew my USA Cycling official’s license. Coincidental with that I am no longer qualified to my GABRA board seat as the Officials' Representative and I have resigned my board seat. Since upgrades are GABRA’s responsibility I have also abdicated my responsibility as upgrade coordinator.

The catalyst for this decision was a couple of new requirements instituted by Shawn Farrell, Technical Director for USA Cycling affecting motorcycle officials beginning in 2010. The net effect of the two new requirements was virtually every moto official in Georgia was disqualified from officiating on a motorcycle. I personally feel the moto crew we have in Georgia has done an outstanding job and by virtue of their efforts have made the races substantially safer than officials in passenger vehicles. I can list time after time when we could have had major occurrences except for the presence and sometime heroic efforts of a moto official. By virtue of the crews constancy, riders also know how rules are applied and can race knowing the rules will be applied to everyone. I think this makes for better racing.

I have been working with Stuart Lamp, the Southeast Regional Coordinator and through him with USAC's headquarters in Colorado to try and get these rules modified and or at least phased in so we can field what I believe to be adequate official crews. I also penned a letter directly to Steve Johnson, CEO of USA Cycling. Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful in my efforts. Given the lack of motorcycles, I feel the races will not be as safe as they have been for the riders or for the officials personally. . As such, I have decided to not renew and to step out of a leadership position in Georgia racing.

I wish Dan Coy, GABRA President, and the other remaining board members the best during 2010 and hope you give them the support you have given me over the years. Dan will be assigning a new upgrade coordinator as quickly as possible. Because I love cycling, you will still see me around on my bicycle so please say hello and share a draft.

Thank you all for some very good times
John Johnson

Host Housing Needed for Roswell The Historic Roswell crit in April needs people to provide host housing for racers coming in from out of state. Email Tim Renfroe at trenfroe@mac.com.

1-31-2010 Message from Stuart Lamp USA Cycling representative asked me to post this:

"I would like to take a moment and address a comment by Mr. Johnson in his letter to racers posted on this site. In his letter, he expresses his opinion that “the races will not be as safe” without the moto officials that Georgia has been accustomed to. The racing will be as safe as it has always been, and we will have motorefs at USA Cycling sanctioned events in Georgia. We have a Level C motoref clinic scheduled for February 21st in Georgia, and there will be more educational opportunities this year to expand the officials base in the state. If anyone has concerns, then please feel free to contact me at slamp@usacycling.org .

I appreciate John’s efforts as an official, and member of the GABRA board. I wish him nothing but the best in all future endeavors.

Regards,
Stuart Lamp
USA Cycling Southeast Regional Coordinator"

Moto Officials Clinic There will be a moto officials clinic in Tyrone, GA on Feb. 21. Details are here.
