Working Mans Madison Report

Earlier this week we ran our first ever Working Mans Madison over a Tuesday and Wednesday evening. the event was a hit with our racers who got to duel it out over the two nights, and also the spectators who got to come out and watch some excellent madison racing. In the Madison category, it was Mountain Khaki's riding away with the victory winning the event after taking atleast 2 laps on the entire field. Oscar Clark and Joey Rosskopf made up the Mountain Khaki's team that took the victory from the Sultans of Sling, James Brookshire and Valentin Todorow. Relative new comers to the Madison and maybe the surprise of the event was Justin Barber and Jim Hodgson who ahd named their team, Man Hands. they were able to ride strongly over the two nights to hang onto 3rd place. The battle for fourth place came down to the last madison session. It was the Faster Mustache team of Chris Kelly and Jason Atwood who held fourth place after day 1 of racing, but in the final madison session is was "Sneaky" Pete Antonvich and what the crowd had begun to call "Mini Pete" Cameron Kennington who had taken the first day to get their legs warmed up, and came out firing in that last madison session to gain a lap on the Faster Mustache duo to finish the two days in fourth place. The Fulton Flyers father/daughter combination of Lamar and Rose Mauney rounded out the placing with sixth. In the A/B non-madison category it was Brian Tester and current Rider of the Year leader, Daniel Banks taking the win from Team Type 1's Joe Eldridge and Vassili Davidenko(yes the former twilight winner!) with Tony Scott and Wayne Whitesides rounding out the podium. the C category was a tight competition with team Race Riot! winning by a slim margin over the Stem Humpers and Old + Young rounding out the podium.

Junior Track Classic, Sunday August 1sth

On Sunday August 1st 2010 we will be running our first ever Junior Track Classic. Racing will kick off from 4pm, we'll have juniors of all ages racing. The event will be open for any junior who has previous track experience, and aged from 10 to 18. We'll have a full gamut of categories and an event list similar to each categories National Championship events. We don't have full details locked in for the event quite yet, but should have those nailed some time within the next few weeks, so keep an eye on the Junior Track Classic web page: http://www.dicklanevelodrome.com/pages/juniorclassic.html

Regional Championships

We're still working on the race flier and schedule for the event, but on Saturday the 14th of August we'll be resurecting our Regional Championship event. it's beena few years since we've run this events so we're glad to be bringing it back. The Elite categories will not only be racing for southeastern glory, but also for a chance to compete at the Elite natioanls championships in California later on this year. Categories will include Elite Men, Elite Women, Masters and we'll also be having some Cat 4 group races thrown in for good measure. Should be gerat day of racing for the racers. More info here:http://www.dicklanevelodrome.com/pages/regional championships.html

7-8-2010 SORBA Woodstock News If so, then please join SORBA Woodstock and attend a trail and bridge building work party at Olde Rope Mill Park on Saturday, July 17th, from 8am to noon. Lunch will be provided for volunteers. The more volunteers we get, the faster you will have new trails to ride. Meet in the parking lot at Rope Mill at 8am. Wear closed toe shoes and long pants and bring lots of water and an epi pen if you are allergic to bees. Directions to Rope Mill can be found here http://www.woodstockga.gov/index.aspx?nid=307.

There is also a chapter meeting on Monday, July 12th, at 7:00pm, at Blankets Creek. Please attend if you would like to find out about all of the activities that are going on with SORBA Woodstock, and you will be able to hear about many exciting events that are being planned. Bring a lawn chair and meet us at the kiosk in the parking lot at Blankets Creek.

Thanks to the persistent passion of our Rope Mill Trail Director - Charlie Shultz, we now have 4 miles open on the first loop - The Avalanche Trail. With the 40+ hour weekly work schedule of both IMBA Trail Solutions and SORBA Pro-Trails, they have together powered out another 2+ miles of machine cut trail at a jaw-dropping rate. Not only machine cut, but groomed into a great ridable condition. So come check them out! We need the tire tracks to create the line and concrete the path. It also gives you a good preview of the trail - designed to be a race course. Intersections are temporary flagged to avoid getting lost. Also, as Malanda said in the previous post, we need an army of folks (like 70 people) on the work party on July 17th to backcut and clean up. If that many folks show, we could have the entire 6.5 mile trail open by the end of July! Come show your support for more trails on the I-575 corridor! Jay Wilkes Pres - SORBA Woodstock

7-20-2010 Brushy Mountain Tunnel on the Silver Comet From Mike Harmon: As most of you are probably aware, the Brushy Mountain Tunnel on the Silver Comet Trail (Mile Post 30) has had a severe problem over the past few years with standing water, improper drainage, mud & silt, etc. All of these things have made the tunnel difficult to traverse, and also pose a significant safety concern for those that do pass through it. And what is particularly sad is the fact that the Brushy Mountain Tunnel is touted as one of the highlights of the Silver Comet Trail. However, it is now seen as an obstruction, not an attraction.

Over the years, people have contacted Paulding Co., but no action has been taken to correct this problem. Some cyclists have recently taken it upon
themselves to help alleviate the problem, with some degree of success, but the magnitude of the problem really requires that Paulding County take the
action necessary to restore the tunnel to its previous condition.

I'm reaching out to all of you with a request that you publish/distribute the contact information I have listed below to your respective groups, and /
or pass this information along to anyone & everyone & ask them to contact Paulding Co. & the Dept. of Natural Resources with a request that they
correct this problem that affects so many.

More from MTB Nationals From USAcycling (Trish's note: This is STXC): In the men’s 19-29 contest, Jafer Beizer (Conyers, Ga./Niner) won the national title and dedicated the win to his father who is fighting pancreatic cancer and was unable to witness the victory in person.

Crossing the finish line for the silver and bronze medals were Mark Parmelee (Waterford, Mich.) and Stevie Cullinan (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Racelab U23 Cycling Team) while Peter O’Donnell (Boulder, Colo./Mafia Racing) and Amar Mannina (Boulder, Colo.) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

“It was a great course today. Climbing is one of my best strengths,” Beizer explained about his race at the finish line. “Yesterday in the cross country, I crashed out half way through, but I was leading the race so I wanted to make up for it today. I like to go from the start. I wanted to stick it as hard as I could and see if I could hold on.”

Also out there was one of Georgia's "First Families" of mountain bike racing. Jansen Linder was 14th in the Jr 15-16 XC, and dad Shey was 14th in the Cat 1 35-39.

DLV Car Break In From the DLV: "Just wanted to let everybody know that we had a theft from a vehicle last night during our Wednesday night racing. A broken window and a missing purse was the result of the break-in. Just want to let folks know to please be aware of any valuables that are in your car, and if at all possible, please do not leave them in there. Secondly, we've swept up the glass as best we could, but please be aware of any residual glass that may be in the area. The break-in occurred by the light pole on the velodrome side of the carpark, so definitely don't ride your bike through that area, and carry it even if your walking through there. We are looking into our security options to try to prevent this from happening again."

Trish's note: Always take your valuables with your or put them out of sight whether you are at a group ride, the velodrome, or the trail. Don't give a thief a reason to break into your car. If it happens, be sure to report it to the police. They really do track breakins.

As usual, please bring or wear: 1) water & snacks 2) gloves
3) closed-toe shoes or bootslso as usual, we'll meet in the North Lot and tools and lunch will be provided. To get to Big Creek: Hwy 400 to Exit 7 (GA Hwy. 140/Holcomb Bridge Rd, eastbound). 7-28-2010 Trips For Kids From SORBA Atlanta: SORBA Atlanta recently worked with Gainesville and the SORBA Trips 4 Kids coordinator, Collier Cato, on a 6 week program with the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation. We led the kids on rides at Big Creek and Sope Creek. We're very happy to have been a part of this effort to help expose the kids to mountain biking but also provide our members a great opportunity to get involved. During one of the sessions, we had the chance to ride with ATL Falcons General Manager Thomas Dimitroff who really enjoyed being out there in the woods on his custom DEAN softail. He spent time helping the kids ride a log pile and work on other skills but also spent a few minutes talking with them about hard work and the importance of staying fit. The 11 Alive video is here.
