6-2-2010 Update on Rider I got an update on Basil McKinley
from a rider that has been in contact with his wife. Basil is the
rider that crashed out of the Marietta Crit last week and was
transported to Grady Hospital. He is still in the ICU. They have
stopped sedation, but he is still not awake. He has responded to
stimulii No one is sure of his prognosis. Keep Basil in your
thoughts during his recovery.
There have been several riders hit in the last week, including two
other racers. Someone was hit on Tucker when a car pulled out in
front of him. I understand he is fine except for some road rash.
Another rider was hit in the Clarkston area. I have no details other
than they are alright. Be careful out there! Exercise your right to
the road, but always remember that a car is bigger than someone on a
bike.
Cherokee Co. RR Info. From NGCA: Greetings, Saturday 06/05 is

after the high school parking lot on the right. The finishing
stretch is very long and wide open with at least two lanes given to
racers. And, best of all, in addition to cash, we've go prizes-Lot
of 'em!! Roswell Bicycles has stocked us up right for prizes on the
"1st lap Sprints". Come on out and test your legs for prizes from

6-3-2010 No Covington Century Trish's Note: Wow....From
Project Adventure Kids: Unfortunately... we have some very sad news
to share with you .....Project Adventure Kids (located in Covington,
GA) closed their doors as of May 28, 2010. To explain a little more,
Project Adventure Kids (PAK) was under an umbrella of another
non-profit located in Beverly, MA called Project Adventure, Inc. It
is a ropes course & team building program with offices around the
world working with corporations and schools.
In 1981, Project Adventure, Inc. started a therapeutic group home
program (Project Adventure Kids - located in Covington, Georgia).
This was their only therapeutic group home program and it was rated
one of the best in the state of Georgia, housing up to 100 teens per
year. Sadly, due to the economy crunch and the changing direction of
Project Adventure, Inc. (in Beverly, MA), they have decided to close
the PAK Covington campus. This has been extremely hard for the PAK
Staff (Covington) to see this program end. We saw the difference the
program made with these kids!!! But we have to stay positive and
remember all of the wonderful accomplishments that our kids were
able to make over these past 30 years....and we will be forever
grateful to the outstanding PAK Staff who helped these kids achieve
their goals. We have worked with the state case workers to
help the kid's transition to other group homes throughout the state.
We can only hope and pray that the kids will move on and remember
the great lessons they were taught in this program. We want all of
our volunteers and donors to know how much we appreciate your help
and support! YOU really made a difference in these kid's lives and
gave the kids so many happy memories of their childhood!
Covington Century
After 21 years of hosting the Covington Century Bike Ride, Project
Adventure will no longer be associated with the ride. We do want to
thank all of the riders and volunteers, who came out each year to
support our kids! This ride was not just about cycling or raising
money but also about spreading awareness to the community about
group home kids. It was an opportunity for the riders to see that
these were not "bad kids" but merely kids who needed a second chance
- they were just born into a bad situation and it could have been
any of us! Our kids loved working at the ride! For so many of
these neglected teens, it was the first time they felt needed....it
also gave them some great memories! They would talk about the ride
for many days afterwards!
We are turning the ride over to the Tourism Department of Covington,
GA . They will be assisted by the Covington Conyers Cycle Club
(C-4). There will be no 2010 ride. Plans for the 2011 ride will be
announced this fall. You can also visit
www.c4cyclingclub.org
We wish the Tourism Department of Covington and the Covington
Conyers Cycle Club much success with the ride in the future!!! The
Staff & Kids of Project Adventure Kids
Jackrabbit Group Ride RAMBO is having a group ride at the
Jackrabbit Trail just north of Hiawasee. This is a great system that
can live up to a phrase like "fun for everyone". Beginners to
hammerheads will enjoy the smooth, flowing trails (one forum regular
stated that, if a race were held here, he'd ride his 'cross bike) at
their own pace; scenic Lake Chatuge isn't bad either.
The details:
* Everyone is welcome, IMBA/SORBA/RAMBO member or not.
* 10:30 AM RTR at Jackrabbit; we had a carpool caravan leave Big
Creek at 8 AM last year and we arrived with time to spare.
* RAMBO is providing the meat, bread and condiments of the cold-cuts
lunch. Please bring a side, chips, etc. to share.
* BYOBs
* We think we have some swag laying around and hope to have a raffle
to give it away.
PLEASE: we want to sure we have the right amount of food so if you
plan to attend, let us know on this thread.
More information about the trail can be found at

I'm bringing my "beginner to hammerhead" family and you should, too.
I know you'll enjoy the day.

hosting a mid-week 2-day Madison on Tuesday June 29th and Wednesday

mid-week time slot. The two days of racing will feature 3
categories. The Madison category will be open to all teams who are
competent madison riders, and limited to 10 teams. We will feature a
combined A/B category for those A's and B's who aren't in the

regular madison style, but they will be racing as teams to compete
for points to become the champion team. The C category will be run
in the same vein as the A/B field with riders teaming up to collect

6-6-2010 Zombie Movie at Silk Sheets Disclaimer: Someone sent
this to me, and I have no clue if it's true.
AMC is filming the movie Walking Dead in the church parking lot,
Charlie's lot and they will be using the grassy lot across from
Charlie's tomorrow. A man who owns land around there showed me where
we could park tomorrow. If you are coming down Campbellton-Fairburn
Road/92 from Douglasville turn left at the Red Light (in front of
Charlie's) onto Cascade-Palmetto Hwy 70 and you can park in the
first driveway (Fountain Index Services) on the right or in the
field which is the second driveway on the right. He would like us to
fill up the field (second driveway) first and overflow into Fountain
Index Services. Below is a link to google maps where we can park.
Please spread the word.

July Paulding SORBA Work Parties From
Paulding SORBA:
Start Time: Friday, July 23, 2010 at 8:00am
End Time: Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 9:00pm
We will be working about 6 hours each day.
Location: Mt. Tabor Park and Austell MTB Trails
Who and What: Paulding SORBA and Engage Atlanta are partnering up
again for the 3rd annual Community Makeover. We are asking Engage
Atlanta for close to 350 volunteers.
Crew Leaders are ENCOURAGED to attend because we'll need you!!
Both days will be catered and I believe Sunday will be our
traditional Mexican Fiesta. $5 donations are requested for the food.
Description: Community Makeover is back and growing like never
before. Over 60 churches have signed up to this point, and we are
picking up steam. Volunteer registration will begin at all of our
church partners beginning at the end of June.
We will let you know when the registration website opens and
volunteer registration begins! Once the website has gone live I will
post it on this thread and send everyone an update. Please advise
once you have registered on the Paulding SORBA FB wall.
Work Description: We will focus primarily on finish work on the 3rd
and final loop at Mt. Tabor and Austell parks. Our intent is to have
the corridor clearing completed prior to the actual CMO weekend so
we can do nothing but focus on tilling, finishing and bridge
building.
Mt. Tabor: There are about 5-6 bridges to be built and if tradition
follows suit they will be completed within the 1st 1.5 hours. There
will be about 4 tillers here focused on the 3rd loop which consist
of of approximately 6 miles of single track that flows through
beautiful Paulding County's hardwoods and pine thickets.
Austell MTB Park: Alot of the same here, the corridor is completely
open and ready for some attention. We intend on having two tillers
here on Saturday and close to 100 volunteers to complete the finish
work.
Silver Comet Hazard From a forum: "There are two areas on the
Comet where the pavement has buckled and heaved upward. One is just
east of mile marker 41 and the other just west of MM41 (west of
Rockmart on the part that parallels Hwy 278) These make a sharp rise
of maybe a foot vertically, and on one, the edge of one slab is
several inches below the edge of the other."

6-20-2010 Update on Injured Crit Rider I've heard a lot of
rumors about the rider that was injured at the crit. I'm happy to
report that he is doing better. Basil is conscious, taking, and
breathing on his own. He was able to get out of the ICU for a week
but had to go back in earlier this week for pneumonia and renal
(kidney) problems. I've been told by a family friend and fellow
cyclist that he does not have health insurance. There will be a
benefit ride for him at some time late this summer or in the fall.
6-22-2010 DLV Century Update From Jeff Hopkins: "First off,
the DLV would like to thank all of the riders who came out on Sunday
for our first ever Century ride. The turnout was better than we had
expected and the tremendous support for the velodrome was great to
see and definitely much appreciated. Thanks also to our volunteers
on the day, it was a hot one and to everyone who braved the heat to
help out, and huge thanks.
We know that there were several areas that could have been better in
planning and implimenting the ride and that more than several people
didn't have a great experience on Sunday. We do apologize to those
folks who didn't have the ride meet their expectations. Please know
that as part of our organizations goals, we hope to run great events
that people will enjoy, and return to because of that. For next
years ride we will only be moving forward with it if we will be able
to gaurantee that we'll be able to run the event in a way that will
provide not only a positive experience, but one that will have the
riders hoping to do it again soon."
6-23-2010 GA CX News

long way to go, but it looks like he will be fine! There are several
people working on setting up a benefit ride or a fund to help with

place in Georgia's Premier Cycling Venue, the Six Gap Century &
Three Gap Fifty boasts many of the same roads and mountain climbs as
the elite Tour de Georgia. Come ride the Ride of the Pros!
The Six Gap Century’s ultra challenging route takes you up and down
six of the steepest climbs in the North Georgia Mountains. Test your
stamina with more than 11,200 feet of vertical climbing over the 104
mile course. Elevations for the six gaps in this ride range from
1,400 feet to 3,460 feet. The toughest climb, Hogpen Gap, will test
even the strongest riders, averaging a 7% grade for seven miles,
with sections as steep as 15%.
The Three Gap Fifty’s alternative route offers half the gaps and
half the distance, but is nevertheless a demanding and challenging
course at 58 miles. Elevations range from 1,400 feet to 3,364 feet.
We are also pleased to announce the 3rd Annual "Valley Route" Bike
Ride. This 35-mile valley option is a great introduction to the

look of a champion without all the extra training. Limited-edition

Cycling Team that is based out of Georgia, will be available during
the month of July at Reality Bikes and Skateboards in Cumming. There
are 30 short sleeve Carbon Ion jerseys available (European sizes 3,
4, 5) and a small quantity of long sleeve jerseys and vests.
A special Meet and Greet session with pro cyclist Cesar Grajales, a
Georgia resident and Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling team climbing
specialist, will be held at Reality Bikes and Skateboards on
Wednesday, June 30, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Following the Meet
and Greet, Grajales will participate in the Wednesday Night Ride
from Reality Bikes. The Shop offers four ride options, from 18-34

winning the Brasstown Bald Mountain stage (Stage 6) at the 2004 Tour

classification at the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling
Championship and finished second at the Sunny King Foothills Classic
Road Race.
The Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling Team jerseys will be unveiled for
public sale on June 30 as well, with retail prices from $85. The
Carbon Ion jersey by Louis Garneau is one of the lightest on the
market (126 grams). Made of 95% polyester and 5% Resistex Carbon
Fiber, this jersey is super lightweight and amazingly breathable,
with the carbon fibers helping to reduce static and facilitate upper
body circulation. Each jersey has a full-length zipper, an elastic
hem, three angled back pockets and is rated SPF 50.
Reality Bikes, which has been in business in Forsyth County for 15
years, is an official retailer for Louis Garneau cycling apparel.
The shop is located at 20 Tri County Plaza in Cumming, Ga. For

6-26-2010 Spring Road Multi-use Trail This project is a joint
effort between the City of Smyrna, The Cumberland Community
Improvement District, Georgia Department of Transportation and Cobb
DOT. This project connects the multi-use trail that the City of
Smyrna constructed along Spring Road with the Mountain-to-River
trail behind the CCT Transfer Station on Cumberland Boulevard.
The project begins at the current end of the city-built trail
located at the intersection of Spring Road and Carolyn Drive and
runs east along Spring Road and south on Cumberland Boulevard to
connect with the existing pedestrian bridge over Interstate 285. The
eight to 10 foot concrete trail picks up again at the intersection
of Cumberland Boulevard and Cumberland Parkway and runs next to the
CCT transfer station behind Cumberland Mall to connect with the
existing Mountain-to-River trail. These trail projects are a part of
a larger initiative to ease road congestion, encourage healthy
lifestyles and promote local businesses. Construction is currently
underway with completion expected before the end of the year.
More National Champions Phillip O'Donnell added to his
