To get to Big Creek: Hwy 400 to Exit 7 (GA Hwy. 140/Holcomb Bridge Rd, eastbound). Turn left onto Old Alabama Rd.; the park entrance is 1/2 mile on left. The North Lot is down the gravel road. Thanks! Mark McCabe RAMBO Events Coordinator

Roswell Ride Start Time From Roswell Bikes: Make sure everyone knows the ride starts at 6PM Sep 2 Come join us in Roswell where it is the only bicycle friendly
community in Georgia. Beautiful flats along the Chattahoochee coupled with spectacular homes along climbs that can challenge the best rider. We even ride past Chipper Jones' house/neighborhood. Three groups to choose from  A Group 20-23 mph average - 25 miles B Group 18-21 mph average - 20 or 25 miles C Group 16-18 mph average - 20 or 25 miles no drop Our goal is to have a safe, friendly and challenging ride for all.  . We support those with mechanical problems and flats. B & C groups. We do not use Aero Bars unless riding in the rear or front of the pack. We do not use ear phones or ear plugs. We obey traffic rules and try at all times to be courteous to motorist. We always wear helmets. The new route for the A group worked well. With the B riders coming up behind several riders made the A jump. I was concerned when I heard several riders rode through the RED LIGHT at Dogwood and Riverside at the bottom of the hill before the finish. This WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.  This communication is merely a way of notifying those interested in
our Thursday Night ride. It does not reflect any responsibility for the care or safety of those participating. All riders, ride at their own risk. See you on the road. Eric Broadwell

Pizza Ride/Stone Mountain Notes From Mark Linenberg: Please Read- Northlake and Pizza Ride- St Mt Police Update
Reminder- 6:15 PM ride start this week

After a couple lengthy and amicable discussions with the Stone Mountain Park Police, by one of our seasoned riders- the ST MT Park Police WANT us to ALWAYS do the following or they will ISSUE TICKETS:

1- Act as a motor vehicle does
2- Obey all traffic laws- especially STOP signs (if you are 1st, 15th, 30th or last in the paceline- you too must STOP when you get to the STOP sign) and double yellow line law
3- Do Not Pass Cars- by crossing the double yellow lines or if you are on a single lane road (ride is neutralized- during these periods)

Three side notes.
1- Try to ride towards the right hand side of single lane roads- do not ride 3 or 4 abreast at the front/middle of the group, which ultimate blocks those behind and prevents others from pulling through.
2- The police asked for and know our ride schedule and will most likely be monitoring our rides- at intersections and follow vehicles.
3- The police will NOT stop traffic for us- as they are afraid of liability issues. The Cop that did stop traffic on a previous ride was reprimanded by his superior.

Win for Mountain Khakis From Team Mountain Khakis: Joey has a huge weekend! What a Birthday weekend for Joey. In between 2 big wins Joey celebrated his 21st birthday, but these victories were no gifts and he won them in dramatic fashion. On Saturday September 4th, Joey Rosskopf won in Anderson, SC at the Tour de La France (Named after the La France Elementary School). The team brought a strong squad to the race which drew some of the US’s top criterium squads including United Healthcare, Fly V Australia, and Aerocat Cycling. The team rode well all day and was represented in a number of key moves. In the closing minutes Joey put in a solo bid with 5 laps remaining. His super effort paid off as he came up big with the win. Myerson finished 7th and Howe 10th – leaving Team MK with 3 riders in the top 10 spots of the $10,000 purse.

On Monday Joey followed up his win in Anderson SC with another big victory in Atlanta at the 10K Classic. The race was aggressive with many attacks that were all covered by the team. Oscar Clark covered the first dangerous move and represented the team in this dangerous move. The breakaway was chased down by powerhouses George Hincapie, Craig Lewis, and Ben Kersten. With these riders doing so much work the team made sure that as soon as the escapees were brought back that there would be a flurry of counterattacks. Joey got into a the next move and without a determined chase their advantage swelled to over 3 and half minutes. When confident that the break would succeed Joey once again showed his tactical savvy by increasing the tempo and reducing the size of the break. In one of the fastest downhill sprints anywhere Joey bided his time, although admittedly he took off a little late, he was still able to come around his breakaway companions for the victory. A victory made even sweeter by the fact that he is from Atlanta and this race has been a goal since he started racing.

Joey had a big weekend but so did the team. 3 in the top 10 on Saturday and 6 in the top 20 on Sunday!

Sunny King Crit News SUNNY KING CRITERIUM DATE CHANGED FOR 2011 The NEABC has been forced to change the date of the 2011 Sunny King Criterium, Foothills Road Race, and Cheaha Challenge. The previously scheduled 2011 date was April 17. The new dates are Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10. The reason for the change is related to the Talladega Speedway NASCAR races. Talladega recently announced that it has shuffled it's fall and spring schedules for 2011, which involved moving their spring races earlier to April 16/17---right on top of the SKC and Cheaha weekend. We looked at all surrounding weekends and considered other cycling events, Easter, and hot temps and came to the conclusion that April 9/10 weekend was the most reasonable option. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause those who have already planned their 2011 riding schedules. The Noble Street Festival, complete with all of the restaurant and bike race events will again take place the day before Foothills RR and Cheaha--on Saturday, April 9th. Please mark your calendars and help us spread the word by forwarding this email to your cycling lists and bike clubs for inclusion on their calendars. Thank you!
NEABC and the SKC and Cheaha Crew. Best Regards, Curtis Cupp Technical Director Sunny King Criterium www.sunnykingcriterium.com

Six Gap Two Weeks & Fewer Than 600 Spots Remain for Sept. 26 Bicycle Event

DAHLONEGA, GA. (Sept. 13, 2010) - The countdown clock at www.cyclenorthgeorgia.com  reads “12 Days” until the start of the 22nd Annual Six Gap Century & Three Gap Fifty, organized by the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce. Registrations are still available for all three ride options on Sunday, September 26, 2010. Fewer than 600 spots remain for the popular bicycle tour of the North Georgia Mountains, from the ultra-challenging century, to the 58.4 three gap ride, and the 35-mile Valley Ride. The event is expected to reach its goal of 2,500 registered riders.

To commemorate one of the largest and oldest single-day bicycle tours in the Southeast, organizers have introduced two new souvenir jerseys created by Hincapie Sportswear. There are a total of six different jersey designs from Hincapie for sale on the event web site. All jerseys are $65 online, and all registered riders receive 15% discount for an online purchase. Official Six Gap socks will also be available this year, available at the Bike Expo.

The 2010 Mountain Sunburst Six Gap and 2010 Blue Mountain Map Six Gap jerseys were specially designed by Hincapie Sportswear for this popular event. Both designs incorporate elements from the event logo on both sides of the jersey. Using the SmartDry® performance fabric, this jersey incorporates exclusive moisture management technology to wick perspiration away from the skin, keeping you drier and more comfortable. Hincapie's exclusive SunSmart technology provides a 30+ Ultraviolet Protection Factor to help protect the skin from the harmful effects of UVA and UVB radiation. And Hincapie™ Gel-Grip waist keeps the jersey in place and prevents it from riding up in the back for superior comfort. Each short sleeve jersey has a full-length zipper and three roomy back pockets.

“We are very pleased to be the official jersey and sock provider to the Six Gap Century,” said Rich Hincapie, president of Hincapie Sportswear. “I’ve done the ride before and it’s a fantastic route. I think six Gap was one of our first century ride custom jersey customers, and we’ve seen the ride grow quite a bit over the years. This year there are multiple jersey designs available, so there should be something that appeals to everyone.”

Blue Mountain Map jerseys are available for men in sizes small to 2XL in race cut and in sizes medium to 2XL in club cut. Women's jerseys are available in sizes x-small to medium in club cut. Mountain Sunburst jerseys are available for men in sizes small to 2XL in race cut and in sizes small to 3XL in club cut. Women's jerseys are available in sizes x-small to large in club cut.

Hincapie Sportswear also creates the special award jerseys presented to the King of the Mountain and Queen of the Mountain competitions this year. Four individuals (two age groups for males and females) will be crowned as the top climbers in the Six Gap event, using a combined time for climbing Hogpen Gap and Wolfpen Gap. Of the two climbs, Hogpen Gap, on Georgia SR 348, rises to 3800 feet over 9.6 miles, and has a two-mile section with gradients of 12-14%.

The Six Gap Century covers a total of 11,200 feet of climbing over 104 miles. The Three Gap Fifty option covers almost 6,400 feet of climbing on a 58-mile route. And the new 35-mile Valley Ride has 2,900 vertical feet along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The majority of participants are “Six Gappers”, with 86% being male and living in the Southeast. A total of 35 states and countries were represented last year on all rides, including California, Minnesota, and Texas. Proceeds from the event help fund community initiatives for the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce, a 501 c (6) not-for-profit organization. The Six Gap Century has become one of the largest events for the chamber.

Online registration is $50 per person for any of the three ride options until September 23. After that date, participants can register in Dahlonega for $55 per person at the Bike Expo on Saturday, September 25. The Bike Expo will be held on the Historic Dahlonega Square and it is free for all visitors. All participants are encouraged to attend the Bike Expo on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to pickup registration packets and visit sponsor exhibits. Sunday event registration will near the start line at the Lumpkin County High School, two miles north of downtown Dahlonega, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

9-22-2010 Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Teams Up With BikeAthens and Other Bicycling Advocacy Organizations Through ‘Share the Road’ Tag Grant From Bike Athens: Thanks to the popularity of Georgia’s “Share the Road” specialty license plates, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) is proud to support statewide and local bicycle advocates in reducing bicycle-related injuries and fatalities in Georgia. GOHS is awarding a $164,000 grant, using funds collected from the specialty plates, to Georgia Bikes!, the statewide bicycling advocacy organization. Partner nonprofits in Atlanta (Atlanta Bicycle Coalition), Athens (BikeAthens), and Savannah (Savannah Bicycle Campaign) will also receive a portion of the grant award. Recipient organizations will use grant funds to engage in comprehensive surveying of motorist and cyclist behaviors and attitudes, to coordinate a statewide media campaign encouraging road sharing and safe cycling behaviors, and to distribute funds to county governments for the installation of “Share the Road” signage and street markings.

According to the 2008 Georgia Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, bicycles
comprise less than one-quarter of 1% of all traffic related crashes, and yet comprise 6 times that percentage of traffic fatalities. Over the past five years, bicycle crashes have been on the rise in Georgia. More than half of all bicycle-related crashes occur in just nine counties (out of 159): Chatham, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Muscogee and Richmond. Each of these counties experienced at least 100 crashes over a three year period (2004 – 2006). In addition to the official crash records, surveys conducted by the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition have indicated that many incidents go unreported and that nearly half of motorists in the metro-Atlanta area are unaware of cyclists' rights and how to safely interact with them on the road.

With increasing numbers of cyclists on Georgia’s roads, as recreational riders and as commuters, the Department of Driver Services and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety recognize the urgent need to reduce bicycle injuries and fatalities in the state. To accomplish this goal, these agencies made available a “Share the Road” specialty license plate. Through the “Share the Road” tag grant, fees collected from these plates will fund: increased awareness of bicycles on the road; programs that improve safety through bicyclist/motorist educational and awareness programs; public safety media campaigns; bicycle safety training and workshops; law enforcement programs; local bicycle advisory committees; the purchase and installation of bicycle signage.

While BikeAthens has coordinated a number local bicycle safety campaigns, there has never been a well-funded, coordinated effort to address driver and cyclist education. This grant will connect existing local campaigns and increase their effectiveness by spreading a cohesive, coherent message to improve bicycle safety across Georgia. BikeAthens Chair Nina Kelly attests that "GOHS funds will increase BikeAthens' capacity for implementing educational and outreach programs to promote safer roads for all users, and BikeAthens looks forward to working with the Athens community to make this happen."

“Thanks to the GOHS “Share the Road” tag grant,” says Georgia Bikes! Executive Director Brent Buice, “bicycling advocates around the state now have a meaningful opportunity to increase safety for all of our road’s users and, hopefully, positively impact the transportation culture of our state.”
Georgia’s cycling advocates and transportation officials will meet to celebrate the awarding of the GOHS grant and to discuss strategic plans for outreach and education efforts at the first annual Georgia Bike Summit, being held in Savannah on October 9, 2010. 9-24-2010 3rd Annual Rally Ride From Frazier Cycling: Please put October 16th on your calendar for the 3rd Annual Ride For Rally. This event is held in honor of Russell Tindol, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor April 2008. Russell, then 14 yrs old, went through 4 rounds of intense chemotherapy followed by 6 weeks of radiation. The cycling community rallied around Russell and his family with an overwhelming display of encouragement and support. He is in remission now and so we celebrate Russell's determination and strength in his fight to return to good health.  Frazier Cycling is a sponsor of this event. Russell and his family have strong ties to Frazier Cycling. Russell is a member of the Elite Race Team and has been racing with Frazier Cycling for 7 years. Russell's father, Mike Tindol, is an 11 year member of Frazier Cycling Partners. Mike's company, Allgood Pest Solutions, has been a major sponsor of the junior program since its inception.  "The ride was started by Frazier Cycling to honor our son Russell Tindol in his battle against cancer. Russell has been blessed with good health in large part due to the support from family and friends. This year Frazier Cycling and the family would like to honor and continue our support for all those children fighting their own battle with cancer."

The ride has a 30 mile and 50 mile option. It will begin and end in Duluth at the Allgood Pest Solutions and BodyRich parking lot.

KK Massage Therapy Special (Trish's note: I highly recommend Kelly! I've been going to her for about a year, and she really understands cyclists.) Despite the recent temps, Fall is here and there are many great races/rides/activities in which to participate! In celebration of the changing season, I am offering a special BOGO sale! Buy one session at regular price (either 60 min or 90 min) and get $20 off the second session of your choice! Ordinarily, you have to buy 4 sessions at once to get this value, but I am offering it in packages of two for a limited time only. Here is how it works; purchase the two sessions up front and schedule whenever you like! Remember, the sessions are sharable with family and friends! The BOGO sale will only last through October! GA CX Demo Bikes! Want the chance to demo a cross bike in your race? Steve Wiley of Cannondale will have 4 cross bikes for demo. Demos will be available at all races
with the only question being the Augusta race (but working on a solution to get them there). They are Cannondale CAADX bikes and the sizes are 48, 51, 54, and 56. If you would like to use one please email me at crossdemo2010@gmail.com. This will be first come first serve. He will email you back letting you know that you have the bike for your particular race. We would like as many people try this as possible so once you secure a demo for a race you will go to the end of the line for any future races.
