April 2011

4-1-2011 Alpha Bikes Rides Alpha Bikes is hosting several rides every week in Alpharetta.

If you have a road bike and like group rides, and bagels, and Sunday mornings, this ride may be for you. We'll leave the shop at 9:00am wheels down and head north into Cherokee and Forsyth counties. Plan for a 40 mile ride at an average pace of about 17 mph. You must bring a road bike and have some group riding experience. We will stop a time or two to regroup. Maps and cue sheets will be available. The fine folks at Bagel Boys (right next to Starbucks) are offering us $1.00 coffee fill-ups for our travel mugs. Check out the Nitro Bagel. Perfectly shaped biking food. Just tell them you're from Alpha Bikes.

It is 'Retta Ramble Time! Thursday April 7 6pm Year #3. This is going to be huge. Yes, the Dips of Doom await, but as always, the winter wonder workers have been busy in the off-season cutting fresh dirt. We can't tell you where; like Fight Club, we don't talk about 'Retta Ramble. Just clip in and enjoy the ride. We need to be ready to roll at 6:00p to catch as much daylight as possible. We will need to bring lights -- fore and aft -- for the first few weeks. Bring your MTB -- or CX bike if you dare. Intermediate to advanced riders only. This ain't golf.

4-15-2011 HB 101 with 3 Foot Amendment Passes!!!!!!!!!!! From a post on the SBL:

HB 101 Approved 150-9 w/ 3 Foot Passing amendment! A GREAT day for bicycling in Georgia and for GA Bikes!
The House originally passed a simple Better Biking Bill, 93-73. The bill was amended and passed in the Senate on April 12, 47-4, with three Significant amendments:
- An amendment defining the minimum safe passing distance as three feet (introduced by Sen. John Albers of Roswell)(aka the Three Foot Bill!)
- Removal of language prohibiting parking in bicycle lanes (In some areas, bicycle lanes have been inappropriately installed in on street parking areas. Georgia Bikes! plans to work on this issue.)
- Removal of language requiring children under the age of 1 year to wear a helmet (no helmets are manufactured for this age group)
Because of the amendments, the House had to re-pass the measure. it did so today, 150-9! (Lots of cyclists called their legislators on Wednesday!)
It now goes to the Governor for signature. For more info, go to http://www.georgiabikes.org/index.php/blog
After it takes effect, be sure to thank GA Bikes. Join next year's Ride to the Capitol, give them money, and support their efforts.

Senoia Crit Change The Georgia Cup has had to change the Senoia crit to a circuit race. There is no change to the Time Trial or parking for either event. They are also requesting that any racers that did the Dalton Omnium take a survey about the race. The City of Dalton looks at the survey to see if the race will be invited to be held next year.

Typically, riders wear an armband -- black if you are riding in memory of someone killed; or red if you are riding to honor someone who has been struck and survived, or if you have been struck yourself. The route in Marietta will start just off of the square in Marietta at the parking deck located at 190 Lawrence Street. We hope you will join us for dinner afterwards at a local merchant on the square (Dutch Treat). If you would like more information on the ride, please e-mail celestehburr@yahoo.com.

The Fat Tire Crit is open to anyone regardless of category. The Fat Tire Crit rules are simple; no bar ends and no slicks, 30 minutes of racing. As always you must wear a helmet. USA Nationals News From the organizer:  With the USA Cycling Elite/U23/Juniors Road National Championships and US Paralympics Cycling Championships just two months away, the city of Augusta and our partner communities are gearing up for a great event. We look forward to hosting the best amateur cyclists in the country this June, and we hope that everyone enjoys their experience in our community. We have some outstanding race venues, and we think everyone will appreciate the southern hospitality. We know that cyclists are interested in checking out the venues. You can find course maps for the road races and time trial at USACycling.org.  The criterium course map will be provided once we receive the race permit, which should be within the week. For riders planning to come to Augusta to check out the courses please take note of the following:
Fort Gordon
• All vehicles entering the gates of Fort Gordon are subject to search. Everyone must have a picture ID.
• Drivers must NOT use cell phones while driving on post.
• Obey all traffic laws. Speed limits are strictly enforced. Be mindful of crosswalks. Pedestrians have the right-of-way.
• Don’t litter! Fort Gordon has been a friend of Georgia and national cycling for over twenty years. Please respect the grounds.
• On weekdays the Range Road circuit is often closed to non-military traffic until after 5pm.
• Weekends are best for training.
• Driving directions and parking information for the long course and short course will be posted on the USA Cycling website within the week.
• There are post barricades on the long course. Cyclists may pass through, but vehicle traffic cannot get through. The posts will be removed prior to the national championships.

Time Trial
• Paint markers on the road identify the turn-around points for the various categories.
• SR-221 will be closed to all traffic during the race. Unfortunately we must share the road in the interim. SR-221 is a popular route for lake traffic. Obey all traffic rules and exercise caution when riding the route.
• The start line is located on the South Carolina side of the dam, adjacent to the parking lot that faces the lake.

We are indebted to a number of agencies for use of the venues. If you happen to bump into anyone from Fort Gordon, the Army Corp of Engineers, the Georgia DOT, the South Carolina DOT, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, or McCormick County Sheriff’s Office, thank them profusely. This event would not happen without them. If you have questions please contact Randy DuTeau at randy@augustasportscouncil.org.  Please note that while we have authorized the Georgia Time Trial Championship to be run in conjunction with the nationals, we are not the promoters. Please contact the Georgia Bicycle Racing Association for questions about the state championships. The 2011 USA Cycling National Championships are dedicated to Major Matthew P. Burke, M.D. Dr. Burke was an orthopedic surgeon at Eisenhower Medical Center on Fort Gordon. He passed away in February from injuries he suffered after being struck by a car last October. The infamous Range Road circuit being used for the championships will be named in his honor. Matt was a great friend of the Augusta cycling community and he is greatly missed.

4-27-2011 Buckhead-Trees Down Buckhead took a beating in Monday night's thunderstorms. Ridgewood Road is passable, but there are trees down everywhere. Crews have left some large pieces of tree trunks in the road. There is also a lot of smaller debris like branches, sticks, and such all over the road. Be VERY careful when riding around Ridgewood this week.

4-28-2011 RealCyclist.com Releases USA Crits Roster USA CRITS Speed Week is a series of seven criterium races over eight days across Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, starting with the Terrapin Twilight Criterium in Athens, Ga. this Saturday. This event is also the first race on the USA CRITS Championship Series. Races conclude on May 8 with the Global Imports Sandy Springs Cycling Challenge near Atlanta, Ga. Two of the Team members racing at this event are past champions of the USA CRITS Championships Series: Yosvany Falcon in 2008 and Frank Travieso in 2007. The RealCyclist.com Pro Cycling Team at these races will include:
• Oscar Clark (USA)
• Matt Crane (USA)
• Yosvany Falcon (USA)
• Mike Midlarsky (USA)
• Frank Travieso (USA)

The RealCyclist.com Pro Team won three of four races at the Sea Otter Classic presented by SRAM, April 14-17, in Monterey, Calif. and team captain Mancebo won the overall title. Also in the Top 10 overall were teammates House (5th on G.C.) and Grajales (10th on G.C.). In all, the eight riders in the Monterey, Calif. omnium-style event recorded 14 Top 20 finishes. Mancebo won two events (time trial and road race) and House won the criterium. This follows an overall win for Mancebo and an individual stage win for House at Redlands Bicycle Classic earlier in the month at Redlands, Calif. “We really should have Loius Garneau make us some custom yellow team shorts at the rate (Paco) Mancebo is racing. At Sea Otter, he extended his lead in G.C. with a win in the Time Trial. It’s refreshing that even a 35-year-old veteran and a grand tour contender like Paco can show elation and even surprise. Veteren riders Grajales and Rabou rode very well and Cole would finish the omnium in 5th. High fives all around for the RealCyclist.com Team,” said Directeur Sportif Gord Fraser. 4-29-2011 Paving at Silk Sheets GA70 (Silk Sheets) is getting REPAVED this weekend, be aware it will be closed and have a lot of construction traffic! It will be between Roscoe and Cochran Mill.

Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic Bicycle Races May 14-15, Blowing Rock, NC Pirate Race Productions is proud to announce the Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic. Consisting of three distinct cycling events across the weekend of May 14 and 15, it is a unique opportunity for cyclists of all ages and abilities to challenge themselves to face everything the High Country has to offer. Thanks to the generous support of Reynolds Blue Ridge in Blowing Rock, the events will provide a much needed funding boost for the Mountain Alliance outdoor leadership program at Watauga High School. Registration for all three events is available online at Pre-Reg.com, with special early bird discounts for signing up before May 1.

The three events that make up the Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic are the Lenoir Rotary Club’s Cycle to Serve Challenge 100 kilometer road ride in Lenoir and the Reynolds Blue Ridge Criteriums benefiting the Mountain Alliance in Boone on Saturday May 14, and The Ascent of Reynolds Blue Ridge in Blowing Rock on Sunday May 15. Cyclists in each of the seven skill and age-group categories who complete all three events will be eligible to win almost $3,000 in cash and prizes. All three races are in close proximity to downtown Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and participants and their families can save big by taking advantage of special rates being offered by the Meadowbrook Inn and Suites. This event follows on the success of High Country Tour Du Life, which in 2010 attracted 445 racers from 18 states who spent over $75,000 dollars while in the High Country, raising over $2,500 for the Seby B Jones Regional Cancer Center.

The Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic kicks off at 8:30AM Saturday May 14 with the 5th Annual Cycle To Serve Challenge. This rural route travels travel in and out of the valleys of Caldwell and Wilkes counties, beginning and ending in the renovated downtown of Lenoir, a 2008 All America City. While only the 100K results count toward the Classic, there are also fully supported 40-mile and 25-mile rides cyclists may participate in.

Saturday from 2:00 to 8:00PM will be Reynolds Blue Ridge Criteriums at the new Watauga High School in Boone. Cycling’s version of stock car racing, ‘crits, as they are usually called, are fast and furious races, with packs of riders shoulder to shoulder as they tear around a circuit that only takes one or two minutes per lap. Races last from 20 minutes for the kids category to 60 minutes for the pros. The event will be a fundraiser for the Mountain Alliance: a community of individuals committed to providing Watauga County high school aged youth with opportunities to explore and develop their leadership potential through experiential learning.

Sunday at high noon will be The Ascent of Reynolds Blue Ridge. The hardest bicycle hill climb ever staged in the Southeast; the new pavement of Reynolds Road serpentines 9.25 miles from Ferguson climbing 3,200 verticle feet before cresting above the Blue Ridge Parkway in Blowing Rock. With a 5.9% average grade and a maximum altitude of 3,842 feet above sea level, this climb dwarfs the Southeast’s notorious slopes like Beech Mountain, Roan Mountain, Mount Mitchell, and Brasstown Bald.

Following The Ascent will be an awards ceremony and post-race party at the stunning Watson Gap Pavilion in Reynolds Blue Ridge, where spectators are encouraged to gather all day to cheer on cyclists as they make their way to the top.

Online registration for the Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic is $25 online for each event before May 1. On May 1 registration increases $10 for Cycle to Serve and $5 for the Crits and The Ascent. On-site registration is available on race day for an additional $5. Insurance requires participants in the Criterium races to have a USA Cycling license; a one-day license costs $10, and annual licenses are $60. Fields will be limited, so register early to guarantee your spot.
