Using Mathematics to Model the Unique Dick Lane Velodrome and Optimize
Pursuit Performance Presentation From Lee Childers:
Tim and I have been doing a bunch of nerdy science stuff with the DLV and
since Pete lent us some equipment for our little experiments and folks at
DLV may be interested, I've decided to present what we've worked on to
anyone interested. This talk is geared for the users of DLV to help explain
how the "unique" qualities of our track affects performance. It will involve
a little math but I promise to keep this to a minimum.
Using mathematics to model the unique Dick Lane Velodrome and optimize
pursuit performance
W. Lee Childers PhD & Timothy P. Gallagher
Thursday, July 21, 2011
7:00 pm.
Auditorium, School of Applied Physiology, Georgia Institute of Technology
555 14th Street, NW
Atlanta, GA 30318
The Dick Lane Velodrome is unique in several ways, 1) it is 1/5 mile, 2) it
has tight corners, 3) it has a hill, and 4) it has bumps, lots and lots of
bumps. These unique features affect an athlete’s pursuit performance. The
individual pursuit is a time trial event in which the athlete tries to
achieve the lowest time to go a fixed distance (normally 4km). Factors
affecting performance for this event include, the cyclist’s ability to
produce power, the aerodynamic drag of the bicycle/rider, rolling resistance
between the bike and the track, the pacing strategy selected by the athlete
and the geometry of the velodrome. This presentation will discuss a
mathematical model that can predict performance by accounting for these
factors.
The presentation will last about 50 minutes and begin with a review of
forces acting on the cyclist related to aerodynamics and rolling resistance.
There will be a discussion on the effect of different aerodynamic
improvements on performance. This will be followed by an introduction to how
the cyclist uses different physiological systems to produce power on the
bicycle and how those systems can be used as a pacing strategy for a
pursuit. The presentation will continue with the effect of the geometry of
the Dick Lane Velodrome. Finally, this information will be used to calculate
pursuit performance using a forward integrated mathematical model (Childers
et. al., 2011) and answer the questions; 1) what is the effect of the tight
corners, 2) the hill, and 3) the track surface? What can be done to improve
performance at this velodrome and what to expect at different velodromes?

Sky Loop Newbie Ride From
ATLBike.org: For anyone wanting to see what the infamous Sky Loop is all
about but afraid of being dropped or getting lost, I will be happy to ride
the 40 mile standard loop at your leisure. Or if there are several of us, we
can form a group of Sky Noobs for a no-drop ride. I think these are
reasonable criteria you should be able to meet to survive and reasonably
enjoy your Sky Loop experience:
Can you pedal for three hours with two 10 minute breaks?
Have you ridden at least 200 miles in the past 30-days?
Do you have gear to fix a flat should you have one?
Can you average 15 mph for 40 miles on the Comet?
Why do I do this? Because I believe in this ride and I have benefited
greatly from the efforts of Chris and atlbike.org in the past three years. I
think there should be more like me there. You don't have to be in the lead
group to have fun on this route. I believe it is one of the safest and well
marked road rides in Atlanta. See the thread on
ATLBike.org for more information. The Sky Loop starts at 8:00 am on
Saturday from the Racetrac Gas Station on Wendy Bagwell Parkway in Hiram
(5882 Wendy Bagwell Parkway Hiram, GA 30141). Park around back by the empty
building and look for the cyclists.
Freedom Ride From their
website: September 11th, 2001—the worst attack on our nations homeland.
Everyone can remember exactly where they were and what they were doing as
they saw the tragedy unfold in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington
D.C. One Atlanta firefighter was working the first shift at Fire Station 21.
He recalls his profound sense of loss for not only his fellow firefighters
but for all of the lives lost and the surviving families whose lives would
be forever changed.
Eight years later, while working the same shift in the same firehouse, the
idea to bike from Atlanta to New York City was conceived in an attempt to
commemorate the lives of the firefighters and first responders who died that
day. But what started out as a simple journey by two firemen on their
bicycles with only their backpacks, quickly swelled into a brigade of 20+
passionate “Freedom Riders”, a well-organized operation and the very heart
of why we are here today.
Join us in supporting these men as they journey across the country to pay
tribute to the fallen heroes and the courageous survivors.

7-22-2011 Decatur Cyclists-Police Need Your Help Decatur/Dekalb
County Cyclists, Police need your help! This was originally posted on the
Decatur Metro Blog. “I have been researching Robert McKenzie for the
past several months as we were made aware of discussions and warnings
circulating via email, mostly due to McKenzie’s interactions with local
cyclists. However, most of the information I have was third party from
someone who heard about an incident or concerns regarding McKenzie. I am
reaching out to ask anyone who has had direct contact with McKenzie of a
harassing, threatening or intimidating nature to please send me an email
explaining the incident. Please provide the approximate date, location and
circumstances. I am aware that incidents with McKenzie are not contained to
Decatur but span through Atlanta, Dekalb, Decatur, Avondale and Stone
Mountain. I am asking for information on any incident with McKenzie, not
just those in Decatur. I am also still trying to locate the father and child
from the recent incident at Glenlake Pool and ask that if you know how to
contact this family, please ask them to contact me. Thank you.”

Alpharetta Greenway News From the Alpharetta Greenway site: The City
of Alpharetta announces plans to temporarily close a small portion of Big
Creek Greenway at Kimball Bridge Road near Rock Mill Park so that
construction can continue on the new vehicle bridge near the park. Public
access to this section of the trail system will be restricted beginning
Tuesday, July 26, 2011 through September 30, 2011. This project involves the
development of a passageway underneath Kimball Bridge Road for future
Greenway use. Alpharetta’s Greenway will be accessible from Rock Mill
Park north to the end of the Greenway at Marconi Drive (Windward Parkway),
and from just south of Rock Mill Park to the connection point to the City of
Roswell’s trail system. Signs regarding the closure will be posted at all
Alpharetta Greenway parking areas. City officials apologize for the
inconvenience that this temporary closure will cause our citizens.

Curious about road or criterium (crit) racing? Want to learn more about race
tactics that can get you to the finish line first? Join us for a race
clinic, Saturday, August 13th to help you grow your skills in both crit and
road racing. Open to riders at ALL levels, we'll talk about and practice
topics specific to crits such as pre-race prep, positioning, cornering,
sprint tactics, and "team" tactics. But, you'd be surprised at how
applicable crit skills are to road racing, and vice versa! So, we'll also
learn and practice how those same skills apply to road racing, along with
more road specific tools like pace lines and breakaway tactics.
This clinic is perfectly timed for you to take your newly tuned skills to
race at the Grant Park Crit (aka "The Dog Days of Summer Crit") on Sunday,
August 21st (www.grantparkcriterium.com).
This race is perfect for beginning racers, as they are part of the
WE RACE: Women's Racing Initiative,
host a women's 3/4 category race , and for the 3rd year in a row, are
offering a women's beginner level race that does not require a race license
to ride! So, let's practice our skills and then go show our Sorella Strength
on the course!
