This race will be one just for the kids, and the kids alone. It will be a great opportunity for the kids to take to the track in their respective age groups and see how they stack up against the competition. All of the race information including the flier and schedule and all relevant information is posted on our website, http://www.dicklanevelodrome.com/pages/juniorclassic.html.  Please let me know if you have any questions about the event! jeff@dicklanevelodrome.com.

6-3-2011 National Trails Day Work at Harbins Park From GATR: Come out and join GATR Saturday June 4, 2011 for National Trails Day. We will be conducting trail work at Harbins Park on MB2 and MB3 trails. These trails have been open for a little over 2 years now and over time the center of the tread has compacted leaving a berm on the outside downhill edge of the trail. We will be knocking this berm off so that the trail will not hold water. We will also be clearing the trail corridor from encroaching vegetation and possibly elevating the tread at the big intersection between MB2 and MB3. We will keep the work short enough so you will have enough energy to go for a ride after the work. Please wear close toed shoes and bring work gloves, water, and snacks for yourself. GATR will have tools, but we could use extra shovels and loppers.

Harbins Park, 2295 Luke Edwards Rd, Dacula, GA 30019
8:30a – 9:00a: Sign in and safety brief.
9:00a – 11:30a: Trail work on MB2 and MB3.
11:30a – 12:30p: Lunch.
12:30p – ?: Group rides.

GATR has the main pavilion reserved from 9:00a – 12:30p and from 3:30p-5:00p. After the group rides you are welcome to hang out at the pavilion again and bring something to grill for your dinner.

A page with answers to a number of important FAQs regarding the event has been created on the GBRA website. The event director took a few minutes to address some common questions he has received from participants.

Thanks to Magic Cycles, Black Cat Burrito, Mountain Times Publications, and the Town of Beech Mountain Department of Parks and Recreation, mountain bike racing is returning to the High Country!

Pirate Race Productions is proud to announce the Magic Cycles AMBC Race Weekend. One of the only three-race American Mountain Bike Challenge events in the country, we are offering Short Track and Super-D races on Saturday, June 18 followed by Cross Country racing on Sunday, June 19. On July 30 we are staging the Mile High 6 & 9 Hour Mountain Bike challenge - where teams of up to three see how many laps they can handle at 5,000 feet above sea level. All events take place on the incredible trail system in the Town of Beech Mountain's Adventure Trail Park.

The Short Track course is a fast and spectator friendly course that still rewards quality bike handling over pure power (e.g. this ain't a dirt crit), with a course split equally between gravel road and twisty rooty double-track.

The Super-D is is part of the new North Carolina Super-D Championship Series. The epic course is over two miles in length with 1,000 feet of descending and almost no climbing on a course designed to be fun and safe for beginners on hard tails, while incredibly rewarding to skilled descenders on five and 6-inch travel bikes.

The Cross Country race is also part of the Maxxis Southern Classic Series. The course features tight, twisty single track on a rolling course set between 4,800 and 5,300 hundred feet above sea level. There are no long climbs or hairy descents, just fun, old-school mountain bike riding.

Pro and Expert racers are competing for cash, including over $1,400 for the Short Track, Super D, and Omnium. Winners of every Sport race take home gift certificates for Cane Creek 40-Series headsets, with Sport omnium winners getting Uvex helmets or sunglasses from MaguraDirect.com, along with all the prizes awarded by the Maxxis Southern Classic Series. Beginner racer winners take home medals.

The Mile High 6 & 9 Hour Challenge gives mountain bikers a chance to team up with their friends or family, or face the ultimate test alone, on the only high altitude endurance race on the East Coast. Racing kicks off at 9:00AM on Saturday July 30, making this the perfect opportunity for first-time enduro riders without having to worry about lights. We are offering categories for one, two, and three person teams, with the winners of each taking home a gift certificate for a Cane Creek 40-Series Headset

For prospective course maps, video, directions, and schedule, or to volunteer, go to www.beechmtb.com.

Sign up to race in the Magic Cycles AMBC Race Weekend online at http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=13389 and the Mile High 6 & 9 Hour Challenge at http://www.BikeReg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=13650 There is no cost for spectators.

6-18-2011 Look for the Southeastern Cycling Ad! Southeastern Cycling is doing a little advertising. Look for us in the July issue of Freewheelin and on the Southern Bicycle League website!

Cyclist Tornado Relief Raises over $10,000! This is from the coordinator, Margaret McDaniel: (Trish's note: My family contributed, and it's not too late for you to contribute!) A huge THANK YOU to all who contributed to my effort to raise money for the Anheuser Busch employees who were affected by the recent tornado. With your very generous contributions, the cyclists raised $10,323.00!!!! The AB Credit Union also raised money making the total amount raised $12,743.00!! A committee made up of myself, a credit union representative, and several AB employees made a decision to distribute the money evenly between the 10 employees who were affected. The remaining $2743. has been donated to two local churches - Crowe Springs Church and Friendship Baptist Church. We unanimously voted that while we certainly wanted to promote goodwill from the cyclists to the AB employees, wouldn't it be great to share with folks in the community? After all, we are cycling on their roads almost daily now. For those of you who aren't aware, Crowe Springs Church was totally devastated - as in GONE. Our donation is just a minute sum of what it will take to rebuild, but those folks have true heart and faith and so appreciate our generosity. I can assure you that everyone in the community knows that the cycling community has stepped up and shown them the love.

A banner will be posted at the entrance of the Brewery thanking cyclists for their generosity soon. Also, an employee of AB has offered to hang a thank you banner from his fence on Cass Pine Log Road - be sure to look for it! Thank you all again for your very generous support and donations. On a more personal note: many of you have thanked me for organizing this effort. I am just the person who felt something should be done and put it out there to YOU, so again THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU - you all made me look good! Happy Cycling and see you on the road. Margaret McDaniel
P.S. This fund raising effort is not over - there is still a great need for donations - these folks lives have been affected for years to come. If you haven't contributed and are so inclined info:
check payable to: ABE Credit Union Mail to: Margaret McDaniel 616 Inglis Drive Marietta GA 30067

Accustomed to riding on the track, Comer used her strong sprint to out kick silver-medalist Ann Weigel (Clermont, Fla./Orlando Road Club) and bronze-medalist Isabella Brookshire (Hendersonville, N.C./Velosports Racing Asheville). Moriah Swan (Alpine, Calif./Strive Racing) and Annalise Oestreich (Powder Springs, Ga./Fulton Flyers) rounded out the lead group that was able to build a gap on the course’s rolling back stretch on the final of two laps.

The 28 starters rode mostly together for the five-lap affair with a lead bunch of heavy hitters separating themselves with around a kilometer remaining. Huang found herself second-wheel after the final turn and was able to punch it up the slight incline to take home the Stars-and-Stripes just ahead of Corrie Osborne (Mequon, Wisc./Nova Cycle Sports Foundation Inc.-ISCorp Cycling Team) and Michelle Blake (Orlando, Fla./Colavita Racing). Last year’s silver medalist Laurel Rathbun (Monument, Colo./Chipotle Junior Development Team) and Zoe Frazier (Suwanee, Ga.) of Atlanta’s powerful Frazier Cycling Team rounded out the top five.

Racing will continue at the USA Cycling Juniors, U23, Elite and Para Road Cycling National Championships tomorrow with the time trial competition for all divisions at the J. Strom Thurmond Dam & Lake.

6-24-2011 Collegiate Track Camp The DLV will be hosting a collegiate track camp Sept. 3-5. Sessions will be headed up and coached by DLV's Jeff Hopkins and Lees-McRae Head Cycling Coach, Luke Winger.

Rope Mill Trails The Cherokee Tribune has a good story on the trails at Rope Mill Park in Woodstock. $22,000 in funding has been acquired to build a 2 mile beginner trail. The article reports that Rope Mill sees 2700 laps per month.

Milton Ticket Fines A cyclist was recently ticketed for running a stop sign in the city of Milton in North Fulton County (Georgia). The fine was $178. Just a warning to come to a complete stop if you are up there. (We should always obey traffic laws when riding!)

Stolen Bikes Recovered This is a really cool story of how a Georgia resident's bike was stolen and recovered in SC.

US Nats Day Two  From USA Cycling: In all 675 riders raced the clock and dodged raindrops in search of national titles in each category, including various para-cycling divisions, on the beautiful, rolling course at J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake on the South Carolina side of its border with Georgia.

Hans Vandenberg(Saint Augustine, Fla./VeloBrew Cycling Club) finished 46 seconds behind Jorgenson to place second in junior men 10-12. Samuel Kophazi (Fort Mill, S.C./Carolina Break) placed third, ahead of Jackson McNear (Louisville, Ky./Red Zone Cycling) and McElroy.

Courtney Comer(San Marcos, Calif./San Diego Bicycle Club), a track rider, continued to excel on the road as she paired Wednesday’s win in the road race with the spot in the junior women 10-12 time trial with a time of 16:29.54. Ann Weigel (Clermont, Fla./Orlando Road Club) was runner-up with a time of 17:24.4. Sophia Broadwell (Roswell, Ga./Fulton Flyers Cycling Club) took the bronze ahead of Veda Gerasimek (Transfer, Pa./Young Medalists-Team Rothrock) and Mackenzie Collins (Clermont, Fla./Orlando Road Club).

Abigail Aldridge(Duluth, Ga./Frazier Cycling Juniors) topped the junior women 13-14 with a time of 15:15.54, edging Amelia Tanner (Irvine, Calif./JET Cycling) by 1.3 seconds. Emma White (Delanson, N.Y./Capital Bicycle Racing) earned the bronze medal while Zoe Mullins (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Colavita Racing Inc.) placed fourth and Ciara Hopkins (Clermont, Fla./Orlando Road Club) finished fifth.

Earning his first national title with a five-second margin was Jack Maddux (Fresno, Calif./Team Specialized Racing Juniors) with a time of 13:35.57, topping the junior men 13-14. Adrien Costa (Los Altos, Calif./San Jose Bicycle Club) won the silver medal while Michael Hernandez (Clermont, Fla./Orlando Road Club) took the bronze. Broderick Hartley (Lilburn, Ga./Fulton Flyers Cycling Club) and Jonathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./TriStar Cycling Team) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

6-28-2011 Heritage Park Closure The trails at Heritage Park near Athens will be closed beginning in August and will not reopen until sometime in January 2012. Signs will be posted in the upcoming weeks at the park Because of the construction of Hard Labor Creek Reservoir there has to be some water mitigation work done on the tributaries that feed into the reservoir. Creeks at Heritage Park are affected. Mike Riter is overseeing the new trails that will be moved away from the creeks. More details are on the SORBA forum.

Six Gap News Six Gap Century The Six Gap Century has expanded registration  to 3000 riders this year.

Cross Clinic I've had some inquires as to whether or not there will be a cyclcross clinic in Georgia this year. Yes! The Sorella cross clinic is in the works. Look for an announcement in a few weeks. It will most likely be the 2nd weekend of Sept. in Cobb County. We will only be doing ONE clinic this year. Everyone that wants to learn about cross will be welcome! (I know that not everyone will be able to make it on the date we choose, but we have to choose what works for the instructors and the venue.) Exact details are still being worked out.

Bike Cobb Three Feet Day Ride From Bike Cobb: he new 3 feet when passing cyclists law goes into effect July 1. We will be ride at 8 a.m. from Free-Flite Bicycles at 4177 Roswell Road, Marietta, Ga. 30062. Please join us for a nice ride to show our numbers and help raise awareness of the new law. Tickets Near the Brewery On the ATLbike.org forum, it was reported that cyclists were ticketed for running a stop sign near the Brewery at Richards Rd. Dog Days Lunar Ride From the CVCA: "Our "Dog Days Lunar Bike Ride XVII" will be on Friday, July 15th from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. The ride takes place at Mt Berry Mall--same place as the old start of our Up the Creek ride. One lap around the mall is one mile. You can ride as many laps as you want and stop at anytime for pizza, watermelon, ice dream (donated by Chick-fil-A), snacks, and drinks. A DJ will play a variety of music. This is a great family event despite the late hour. The kids love the freedom of being able to ride without traffic. Some of the parents just come and sit in lawn chairs, listen to the music, visit, and eat while the kids wear themselves out. Of course, many of the parents ride also and there is usually a couple of pace lines going in the outer lane. The riders are separated in different lanes according to age and speed. The lights will be on and the restrooms will be open. Mall security and police will be present to direct traffic on and off the course. Registration form is available under "special events" www.cvca.org.  We have just lost our web master, so the form is from last year, but is still valid except for the date changed to July 15. You can also register that night. Prices are low to allow almost anyone to be able to afford to participate."

6-30-2011 Tour De France Ride Cartecay Bikes is hosting a 70 mile ride/fun race on Saturday to help celebrate the start of the Tour De France. It will start at the Big Creek Fire station number 4 in Ellijay Georgia off of Big Creek road, 9 miles off of GA Hwy 52 East. The start time is 9:00 am. 1) Team with the first 10 riders across the line at the fire station wins! 2) Winning team takes home the race trophy to display until next year’s race when it may or may not change hands. 3) One mandatory store stop late in the race (~50mi maybe?) where many riders will regroup. Real “race” will be from there back to the fire station… the part of the route with some tough climbs. How long you stay is based on your strategy at the finish. Remember it’s over 70 miles with a high near 90 and clear sun forecast for Saturday. 4) There will be a roaming sag motorcycle and more support may develop through the week. 5) High quality food (organic/natural burgers and buns, salsa, etc.) at the finish and a high quality keg of beer (We’re supplying the beer! Need donations for the keg). The map is here.
