3-5-2011 Dekalb County Incident Brody Hartley was assaulted while on his bike on Thursday in Dekalb County. According to the email I was sent, Brody was riding his bike and was buzzed by a truck. He yelled at the truck.  The 45 year old and his 18 yr old daughter got out of their truck and kicked the bike out from under him. They pushed him into traffic. The man also allegedly went after the Brody with a Maglite flashlight. Witnesses helped Brody, who had hurt his shoulder that was still healing from another recent injury. The witnesses also helped ID the car. The alleged perps were charged with assault and have since bonded out of the Dekalb County jail. WSB-TV had an interview with Brody and the rest of the story. Thanks to WSB-TV for covering this important story.

Trish's rant: What gives any adult the right to beat up a kid? Even if he was walking or doing something else, the adult should have just minded his own business. What kind of sick individual assaults a kid? I know the Junior, and he's a sweet teenager! Who gets out of their car to push a kid on a bicycle? I think this guy and his daughter are really messed up and probably need mental health intervention as well as incarceration.

3-7-2011 Welcome Alpha Bikes! Welcome to our new advertiser, Alpha Bikes! Coming up on March 12, Alpha Bikes will be hosting a Niner Demo Day at Blanket's Creek from 9 am to 3 pm. Come out and try a 29ner mountain bike and see what the hype is about! March 11-13 they will also have a huge winter sale with up to 30% off all winter merchandise!

GREENVILLE, SC. (March 3, 2011) – WE RACE Women’s Racing Initiative announced today its 2011 schedule for the WE RACE Points Series, featuring five race weekends in five southeastern states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.

“The inclusion of races from five neighboring states in 2011 allows WE RACE to offer more diverse racing opportunities and deeper field of competition for our ladies,” series co-organizer Catherine James said. “The quality and timing of the races we’ve selected provide a well rounded race experience for our racers and teams.

Upcoming GA Cup Events From the Georgia Cup:  Perry Roubaix - Is next weekend and one of the most fun RR's in the SE.
Union City Mayor's race- March 19-20. Featuring the Cancer Walk 9am before the TT.
Dalton Grand Prix - March 26-27. This is the first time since 2008's ToA that there has been Sprints. Downtown Dalton will host Friday night under the lights sprints. If you have never participated in Sprints - don't miss the fun.
Here's how it works:
We will begin at 7pm - Reg at 5pm. Chips required.
Each CAT will go separate from the others and the top 2 from each (excluding Cat 5's) will advance to the GC Sprint Championship. Which is one finial sprint for the glory.
We will begin at 7pm with the CAT 5's then Women, 4's, 3's, M45, M35 & ProAm.
There are 3 rounds per field. Each round can have multiple wave of up to 10 sprinters.
To begin, the group is staged behind the start line and are assigned a # based upon the wave they will race. Example: if there are 60 sprinters in round 1 there will be 6-8 waves of 7-10 - Top 3 in each wave will advance to R2. Using same example there will be 18 to 24 sprinters that advanced to R2. We want this round set up to have R3 at around 6- 9. With 3 advancing from each wave. So, 7-8 sprinting to advance to R3.  R3 is 1 sprint. Top 3 in each wave get points and Top 2 Advance to GC Sprint Champion.

Group Ride Etiquette Trish Albert

If you are a beginner, please practice handling your bike before coming to a group training ride. It isn't safe for anyone if there are people that do not have basic bike handling skills riding in a large group. The Southern Bicycle League offers many
wonderful beginner group rides to hone your pack skills. Remember to be prepared for the ride. Bring water, food, and a pump and spare tube(s). Bring your cell phone. Riders don't mind helping one another, but it is always safest to come prepared. Don't
forget your clothes. Local bike shops carry extensive lines of  clothing. Most riders don't "loan out" clothing.

Group ride etiquette:

1. Hold your line. Do not wander into someone else's "ride space." To quote the movie Dirty Dancing, "This is my dance space. This is your dance space. You don't come into mine, and I don't come into yours." Do not ride all over the
road. If you are going to change position, look around before "darting" to your new position. Be predictable! Don't be a squirrel.

2. Do NOT ride in your aerobars in a group. It is dangerous, and you could take out yourself and the rest of the group. You do not have as much control over your bike while in aerobars. If it is too much of a temptation, remove your
aerobars for group rides.

3. Do not yell rude words or make rude gestures towards cars. They are bigger than you. You will lose the fight. Be nice to fellow road users even if they aren't.

4. When in a paceline, always pull off to the left. If you pull off to the right, you can hurt yourself by running into a curb, grass, gravel, and bus stop signs.

5. Do not take both hands off of the bars when riding in the pack. Drift to the back to take your jacket off, eat, whatever. If you run over something and lose control of your bike, you will probably go down.

6. Please point out pot holes and other road debris, but do NOT swerve around it. See #1-HOLD YOUR LINE.

7. If you are stopping or slowing down, yell "stopping" or "slowing down," so that riders behind you can safely apply their brakes.

8. Do not cross the yellow line. Cars are bigger than you, and you will get squashed. When you cross the yellow line, you cause the accident, not the car. There have been several people hit in Atlanta in the last year when they
crossed that magic line. Don't chance it. We want to see everyone week after week!

9. Do not pass on the right. Always pass other riders on the left.

10. Do not talk on the cell phone while on a group ride. It is safest to stop and pull off the road if you need to make a phone call.

Allatoona Work Party From SORBA Atlanta: Calling all Northwest Atlanta area riders.. Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, Woodstock, Cartersville! We need MORE riders to help make a bigger dent in finish work for this trail! The short term goal is to complete finish work on the first 4 mile loop. The longer term goal is to construct (and finish!) up to 15 miles of total trail for this system. This will be the first purpose-built mountain bike trail in a Cobb County park so we need your positive support to show that riders care about the resource and desire sustainable mountain bike trails in Cobb County. Surrounding Paulding & Cherokee Counties are well on their way with Blankets Creek, Mt Tabor, and more. Help us create a hub of great riding in the Northwest!

Century/Fun Ride Listing Just a reminder that I do not maintain a calendar of century/fun/charity ride listings. I offer a one time mention in the news section. Of course, promoters and non-profits are always welcome to purchase an ad! Email me at sttarlite@hotmail.com for more information.

Action Cycling Ride From the promoter: On two days this May, you can be among a group of cyclists and volunteers who are challenging themselves and changing the world. The AV200 200 begins on the beautiful Emory University campus in Atlanta and winds through scenic Georgia countryside to arrive at Camp Rock Eagle in the Oconee National Forest. Along the way you will have the opportunity to make new friends and see parts of Georgia in ways that you have never seen it before... from a bike! And at the same time you will be raising much needed money for Emory Vaccine Center, which is at the forefront of AIDS vaccine research. Completing back-to-back centuries (200 miles) is a very rewarding endeavor. Building public awareness for HIV/AIDS is challenging. Raising money for an AIDS Vaccine is difficult. And making the commitment to accept these challenges is a serious one. The decision, the commitment, the training, the sweat, the pain, the accomplishment of your impossible dream, the knowledge that YOU have made a significant contribution through your individual efforts that make a big difference in the world is a sense of great exhilaration that have made grown people weep with joy at the end of the ride. What you will have accomplished will be felt around the world!

The registration fee is $100 but will be discounted $25 if a team of five or more registers. The fee includes two t-shirts, accommodations Saturday night and all meals/drinks for the weekend, including a post ride dinner/ceremony on the campus of Emory University. The fundraising minimum is a low $500. For more information, visit us at www.actioncycling.org, send an email to info@actioncycling.org or call us a (404) 954-CYCL (2925).

HB 180 Update From Eric Broadwell: After watching Rep Wendell Willard pass on his turn to read bills into the house rules committee and feeling deeply disappointed like I had let down my peloton mates, I wasn’t sure what to do. The Governor is speaking at the ride to capitol so what will he talk about? I hope and pray the potential 3 ft law. I have a bit of business that was going into the Sandy Springs City working session this evening, so I went to the city council meeting to monitor the progress. Wendell Willard is the city attorney. I had a moment to speak with him and he told me he was told to bring his bills before the Rules committee meeting tomorrow morning at 9AM. I didn’t know there was another meeting tomorrow. He also mentioned that HB101 is in the senate and he was going speak to Roswell Senator John Albers to see if the senator could offer an amendment to that bill to add the definition of safe distance to be 3 ft. So we have two options at this point. Next update will be tomorrow after the morning rules meeting and before the session begins. http://www.bebikefriendly.com

Sunny King Crit News  Top sprinters ready to race for the crown at NRC’s Sunny King Criterium, April 9th races will be streamed live on the VeloNews website

Anniston, AL (22 March 2011) – Some of the domestic cycling peloton’s fastest sprinters will head south for the ninth Sunny King Criterium, the second stop on USA Cycling’s prestigious National Racing Calendar (NRC) and the first of fourteen criteriums throughout the season. Pro and amateur cyclists will speed through the closed streets of downtown Anniston, Alabama as part of the Noble Street Festival 2011 in races being held from 11 AM-9 PM CT that will be streamed live on the VeloNews website (www.velonews.com/live) as well as on the official race site, www.sunnykingcriterium.com

Taking place in the shadow of the nearby Talladega Speedway, over 5,000 adrenalin junkies are expected to line the streets to watch the cyclists compete NASCAR-style – meaning it’s all about speed, thrills and spills in unpredictable bike races where anything can happen at any time. The entry fees from the Sunny King Criterium will again be donated to Relay For Life, a local chapter of the American Cancer Society, to which the event has donated over $60,000 since 2005. The goal for 2011 is to raise another $10,000. Starting with the juniors, continuing with the amateurs, and headlined by the pros, the riders will pedal counter-clockwise on a flat four-corner, .7-mile rectangular circuit with a slight uphill finish. Racing under the lights, the one-hour women’s pro/1/2 event is scheduled for 6:20 PM CT followed by the men’s pro/1 sixty-lap affair at 7:30 PM CT.

Back to defend his Sunny King Criterium victory from last year will be Fly V Australia’s Ben Kersten, who will be joined by teammates Jonathan Cantwell and Australian Criterium Champion Bernie Sulzberger. Also expected to take the start in the men’s pro race are reigning USPRO Criterium Champion Daniel Holloway, who will be supported by Andrew Bajadali, Reid Mumford and their Kelly Benefits Strategies-OptumHealth teammates, former USPRO Criterium Champion Rahsaan Bahati (Slkz presented by Pista Palace), Frank Pipp and Kyle Wamsley along with a contingent from Bissell Pro Cycling Team, an eight-man Kenda Pro Cycling presented by Geargrinder outfit led by Chad Hartley and Luca Damiani, Cole House and a crew from RealCyclist.com, and talented young development squads from Team Type 1 and Chipotle Development Team.

The women’s race will be powered by the powerhouse TIBCO/To The Top outfit featuring 2009 NRC champion Alison Powers, 2009 U.S. National Road Race victor Meredith Miller, and last year’s U-23 (under age 23) U.S. National Criterium winner Samantha Schneider. They’ll clash with riders from the highly respected Colavita/Forno D’Asolo featuring Kelly Benjamin, and Team Type 1.

Sunny King Criterium race director Mike Poe said, "We are excited about partnering with VeloNews to provide live coverage of the full day of racing at the Sunny King Criterium. We had a large online audience last year when we streamed the races live on the official race website and we’re utilizing better technology to improve the video stream this year. Adding the power and reach of the VeloNews site will enable us to provide far greater exposure for the teams and their sponsors while allowing the amateur riders a chance to race in front of a global audience."

Billed as “The Journal of Competitive Cycling,” VeloNews is the established pack leader in the coverage of cycling via its monthly print magazine and website.

To complete the racing weekend, on Sunday, April 10th, many of the pro and amateur cyclists will test themselves further on the challenging rolling hills in nearby Piedmont during the 65-mile Foothills Classic Road Race. Additional information is available at www.foothillsroadrace.com. An entertaining day for the family, the Sunny King Criterium will also be the scene for a wide array of children’s activities including races, Bike pARTS, which is a sculpture exhibition and competition made from recycled bike parts, and over a dozen local restaurants will be serving scrumptious snacks and delicious meals. In addition to being designated as an NRC event, during which individual riders and teams compete for points towards the season-long series titles, the Sunny King Criterium is part of the WE Race Series, Alabama Cycling Association Points Series and The Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Road Series. Further information for spectators as well as registration information for participants can be found at www.sunnykingcriterium.com.  Follow the race on Twitter @SunnyKingCrit and on facebook at the Noble Street Festival.
