Chicks at Chic Chicks at Chic!! Please join Norma Rainwater and Joy
Bolt for an intermediate women's clinic and ride at Chicopee in Gainesville,
GA on June 11th, 2011.
This clinic is open to any women ages 16 and up who have been mountain
biking for about a year or so. (Not a hard and fast rule. We just want to
make sure you know how to work your bike and can ride on a singletrack trail
for an hour or so.) We'll meet at the parking area at 10:00 am for some
skills and drills. Learn how to use balance and vision to handle your bike
fluidly and efficiently. Also, learn how to properly set your seat height
and your tire pressure. After having some fun in the parking lot, we'll set
off on the trail for a fun ride on the singletrack at Chicopee. We'll
practice our skills and stop for some well deserved snacks provided by "the
guys" along the trail. We should wrap up by 1:00. Limited to the first 20

Cyclists for Tornado Victims The devastation near the Bud Plant from
the tornados is really bad! I saw it first hand today on my ride Saturday,
which took us by the Crowe Springs area (disclaimer, this is a route we
normally do, we didn't go to see the devastation). Entire stretches of
everything are just GONE. Several Bud employees were affected. Please see
below to see how you can donate directly to the Bud Credit Union. Remember
how generous Budweiser is in letting cyclists use the parking lot to start
our rides. My family has made our donation.

Ride of Silence From the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition: Ride of Silence
Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph) in honor
of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public
roadways. Why does this ride exist? To HONOR those who have been injured or
killed, to raise awareness that we are here, to ask that we all share the
road. In May at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence™ will begin in North America
and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent
procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling
on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road
with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and
sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. In 2003, Chris Phelan
organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry
Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. To learn more
about this ride and its history please visit:

Covington Century is Back! (Trish's note: There is no website yet.)
22nd Annual Covington Century Bike Ride Saturday, August 13, 2011
The 22nd Annual Covington Century Bike Ride (CCBR) is back and will be
bigger and better than ever before! Through the high visibility within
Georgia's cycling community, the Covington Century has become the most
talked about century in the state - with over 1400+++ cyclists riding the
2009's 100 mile course. This year we will have a 100, 62, 25 mile ride.
While the Covington Century is a lot of fun, it has always served a greater
purpose - to raise money to improve the lives of teens. This year's ride
will benefit the students at the Challenge Charter Academy (a 501(c)3
non-profit) located in Covington, Georgia. All donations are tax deductible.
In 2009, over 1,400+ cyclists joined us to ride 30, 50, 80 or 100 miles.
While many cyclists are from local communities, participants came to
Covington from 116 cities in the state of Georgia, and eight nearby states.
This event appeals to casual cyclists as well as avid recreational athletes
looking to achieve the coveted distinction of finishing a century (100 mile
route) in less than four hours - in 2009 over 525+ signed up for the 100
miles! The ride's youngest participant was 8 years old, and our oldest
cyclist was 77. The Covington Century continues to be a fun family event for
cyclists of all ages and abilities. This year's ride will be even better
with a new start location, more parking, and a new route to highlight the
scenic back roads of beautiful Newton-Jasper-Morgan-Walton counties. We also
welcome you, your company, or cycle team to become a sponsor of this
landmark event that has supported teens for the past 21 years. So mark your
calendars and spread the word that the Covington Century has returned! More
details to follow (including registration info) in the coming weeks! For
questions, please call 770-895-3301, or email to

Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic Bicycle Races May 14-15, Blowing Rock, NC
Pirate Race Productions is proud to announce the Reynolds Blue Ridge
Classic. Consisting of three distinct cycling events across the weekend of
May 14 and 15, it is a unique opportunity for cyclists of all ages and
abilities to challenge themselves to face everything the High Country has to
offer. Thanks to the generous support of Reynolds Blue Ridge in Blowing
Rock, the events will provide a much needed funding boost for the Mountain
Alliance outdoor leadership program at Watauga High School. Registration for
all three events is available online at Pre-Reg.com, with special early bird
discounts for signing up before May 1.
The three events that make up the Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic are the Lenoir
Rotary Club’s Cycle to Serve Challenge 100 kilometer road ride in Lenoir and
the Reynolds Blue Ridge Criteriums benefiting the Mountain Alliance in Boone
on Saturday May 14, and The Ascent of Reynolds Blue Ridge in Blowing Rock on
Sunday May 15. Cyclists in each of the seven skill and age-group categories
who complete all three events will be eligible to win almost $3,000 in cash
and prizes. All three races are in close proximity to downtown Blowing Rock,
North Carolina, and participants and their families can save big by taking
advantage of special rates being offered by the Meadowbrook Inn and Suites.
This event follows on the success of Boone-Roubaix Deux on April 23, which
attracted 225 visitors from 10 states who spent over $18,000 dollars while
in the High Country. The Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic kicks off at 8:30AM
Saturday May 14 with the Lenoir Rotary Club's 5th Annual Cycle To Serve
Challenge. This rural route travels travel in and out of the valleys of
Caldwell and Wilkes counties, beginning and ending in the renovated downtown
of Lenoir, a 2008 All America City. While only the 100K results count toward
the Classic, there are also fully supported 40-mile and 25-mile rides
cyclists may participate in.
Saturday from 2:00 to 8:00PM will be Reynolds Blue Ridge Criteriums at the
new Watauga High School in Boone. Cycling’s version of stock car racing,
‘crits, as they are usually called, are fast and furious races, with packs
of riders shoulder to shoulder as they tear around a circuit that only takes
one or two minutes per lap. Races last from 20 minutes for the kids category
to 60 minutes for the pros. With the generous support of Black Cat Burrito,
the event will be a fundraiser for the Mountain Alliance: a community of
individuals committed to providing Watauga County high school aged youth
with opportunities to explore and develop their leadership potential through
experiential learning.
Sunday at high noon will be The Ascent of Reynolds Blue Ridge. The hardest
bicycle hill climb ever staged in the Southeast; the new pavement of
Reynolds Road serpentines 9.25 miles from Ferguson climbing 3,200 verticle
feet before cresting above the Blue Ridge Parkway in Blowing Rock. With a
5.9% average grade and a maximum altitude of 3,842 feet above sea level,
this climb dwarfs the Southeast’s notorious slopes like Beech Mountain, Roan
Mountain, Mount Mitchell, and Brasstown Bald. Following The Ascent will be
an awards ceremony and post-race party at the stunning Watson Gap Park in
Reynolds Blue Ridge, where spectators are encouraged to gather all day to
cheer on cyclists as they make their way to the top. Shannon St Clair of
Brushy Mountain Bicycles in North Wilkesboro will keep the party going,
DJing the post-event festivities and pouring Blowing Rock IPA. Online
registration for the Reynolds Blue Ridge Classic is $30 for the Criteriums
and the Ascent. On-site registration is available on race day for an
additional $5. Insurance requires participants in the Criterium races to
have a USA Cycling license; a one-day license costs $10, and annual licenses
are $60. Fields will be limited, so register early to guarantee your spot.

5-13-2011 11 Alive 3 Foot Law Coverage 11 Alive sent reporter Keith
Whitney to cover the 3 Foot Law at Thursday's Atlanta Cycling Vinings ride.
He interviewed Jack Easter and Mike Harmon. They are both good spokesman for
cyclists! The coverage is here:
http://www.11alive.com/news/article/190824/40/New-Bike-Law-Changes-The-Rules-Of-The-Road.
I think it was a fair and balanced piece. (Look, and you might catch several
people you know.)
(Trish's Note: I already made my donation!) Cyclists Helping Tornado
Victims From the organizers: In addition to a Wednesday ride
starting at 9 a.m. from the Brewery parking lot, please see 2 very important
notes below on how you can help the community and ABB employees that were
victims of the tornado.
We are all aware of the recent tornadoes in the South. What you may not be
aware of is the total devastation "in our own backyard" - wiping out many
homes very near the Cartersville Budweiser brewery - in the Crowe
Springs/Gaines/Law Rd. neighborhood. Many of you are not familiar with these
street names, only by "route markers" you follow. These hard hit areas are
on routes we all ride on a regular basis. Folks say all the time that these
are some of the best roads for riding anywhere - and we go along on our
bikes never giving a thought to the communities or the families who live on
these roads. Now is the time we can think of them - and show them how much
we care for them and appreciate the tolerance they have shown us for years -
allowing us free access to their community and roads.
Many of you have expressed interest in helping out and we have a plan. We
would like to make donations to directly assist Anheuser Busch employees -
specifically from the cycling community - as we feel it is important to let
the folks know that we care and want to help them out. We have been in
contact with the folks at Anheuser Busch and they have graciously embraced
our plan and will assist us in directing the funds. Donations are being
coordinated through Margaret McDaniel (NARC member) - and she in turn is in
touch with the folks at the brewery. With the hundreds of riders who come to
the brewery and ride we are hoping to give back - showing our support to the
community and building more goodwill for the cyclists. While there is a need
for material items such as diapers, bottled water, canned goods, clothing
and much more, monetary contributions are encouraged and welcomed and easier
for us to coordinate. We don't have a suggested amount for your
contribution, but ask that you consider how often you ride these gorgeous
routes and pay nothing. Every dollar has meaning to a family - whether you
contribute $5, $10, $25 or a larger amount.....it all goes to a great cause.
In order to streamline the process and make it easier on the ABE Credit
Union (they will be handling the donations) your tax deductible
contributions should be sent to: Margaret McDaniel 616 Inglis Drive
Marietta GA 30067 Your check should be payable to: ABE Credit Union
Any amount you contribute is greatly appreciated - large or small - it will
help.
5-16-2011 Newton County Omnium The
Newton County Omnium will be June 11-12 in the Covington area. Saturday
will be the TT and crit with a RR on Sunday. Please support this independent
promoter!
DLV Pictures I'm not sure who's photos these are. They were posted to
Twitter on Friday. They show the
DLV being torn up a
few years ago when it was closed for repairs. Amazing stuff!
Three Foot Law Coverage Here is some more
3 Foot Law coverage from Augusta. Also,
the Patch has a story about
Smyrna Bikes owner, Tom Butler, and the 3 Foot Law.
5-17-2011 Cartersville Century From the promoter: Thank you for over
12 years of support for the Boys and Girls Club of Bartow County through
your participation in the Cartersville Century.
As you know, our community was hit hard by the recent destructive tornadoes.
We have been working to help many of our local residents who lost
everything. It has been a sad experience, but watching Georgian's come from
every part of our state to lend a hand has been encouraging. Despite all the
damage, the 2011 Cartersville Century is ON and we hope it will be bigger
than ever. However, several of the Churches that have provided SAG support
for many years have been destroyed. While we have made plans for alternate
SAG locations, we hope to give back to those Churches for all the years they
have supported us. Therefore, we have set up the option for an additional
donation for the Churches that were destroyed when you register. Just
signing up to ride and making a small contribution for our Churches would go
a very long way towards helping our community rebuild. To register, please

FOR RIDERS Please note that GBRA has been working hard to ensure that
results and standings are collected and posted as quickly as
possible. At times, however, there have been difficulties in
reaching a point at which the information is complete and
correct enough to post. We appreciate your patience as we work
to bring you the most accurate and updated information.
We ask that all riders confirm that information on the USAC
database is correct in order to assist in making the calculation
of points move more efficiently. Also, please be sure to
provide the correct information during registration for each
event.
If you have questions about results or standings, please email gcs@gobike1.com.

How to Promote a Good Century, As Seen By A Cyclist by Trish Albert
I've been doing a lot of centuries this year and thought I'd
share some observations on how to put on a good century from a
rider's perspective. This is representative of several rides and not
a specific one.
1. Have adequate bathrooms at the start. Do not
tell the women they cannot use the one open bathroom. We will use it
anyway.
2. Make sure the volunteers are not rude to the cyclists.
Volunteers are there to assist the riders and help with the ride. A
smiling face is always welcome. I'm not expecting the red carpet,
but outride rudeness is not acceptable. (...and I thank those
friendly volunteers who give up their day to help!)
3. Have pens
at registration. Spend an extra $10 at the local mega-office supply
store for 2 boxes of pens. Riders should not have to wait to use the
two pens that are available, and volunteers will appreciate not
having to hunt for pens to use.
4. Print plenty of maps. Riders
should be able to take one of each of what they want. Maybe the
rider does not know if they want to do the 45 or 60 and will decide
when they are on the bike. They want a map of each course.
5. Make sure the guy on the PA is talking about useful things. If
not, just play the music.
6. Have police support at major intersections. On a recent ride,
we had to cross a major road with a 55 mph speed limit and lots of
traffic with no one manning the crossing. It was very dicey.
7.
Have good food at the rest stops. Potato chips and "Little Debbie"
snacks aren't enough. Add in fruit, cookies, nuts, and PBJ
sandwiches. Bonus for homemade, fresh, hot chocolate chip cookies!*
8. Make the PBJ sandwiches ahead of time. Have them cut up into
quarters and ready for the cyclists to grab and go. This will also
keep the young volunteers busy and keep them from getting bored.
9. All water should be very cold.
10. Offer some kind of sports
drink like Gatorade at all rest stops.
10. Make the course well. There need to be at least 3 markings at
every intersection where there is a turn--about 75-100 feet before
the turn, at the turn, and after the turn to confirm the riders are
going the right way. There should also be marks at any intersections
that are or confusing. If the course will be on the same road for
more than 5-6 miles, mark an intersection to let the riders know
they are still going the correct way. Riders should be able to
follow the course without having to consult the map.
11. Have "real" bathrooms or at least 2 porta-potties at each of
the rest stops.
12. At the end, make sure there are plenty of cold drinks. If we
want one to go, there should be plenty. We are very thirsty,
especially if it is hot!
13. If the AC can be turned on in the building where the century
ends, please turn it on!
14. If pasta is offered as the post ride meal, make sure there is
plain marinara and meat sauce available. Vegetarians cannot eat the
meat sauce. Bonus points are given for salad dressing that is not
prepoured over the salad.
Century, Charity Ride, and Fun Ride promoters would do well to
attend and ride such Georgia classics as
Up the Creek Without
a Pedal (CVCA), Beautiful
Backroads (NARC, et. al), and the
Cartersville Century
(Boys and Girls Clubs of Bartow County) as out of state rides
like 3 State, 3
Mountain and the
Cheaha Challenge. These rides have all aspects of promoting a
century down!
*These cookies can be found at rest stop #2 on the
Chattooga Century.
They are fresh and hot, right out of the oven!

National Trails Day Work at Harbins Park Come out and join
GATR Saturday June 4, 2011 for National Trails Day. We will be conducting
trail work at Harbins Park on MB2 and MB3 trails. These trails have been
open for a little over 2 years now and over time the center of the tread has
compacted leaving a berm on the outside downhill edge of the trail. We will
be knocking this berm off so that the trail will not hold water. We will
also be clearing the trail corridor from encroaching vegetation and possibly
elevating the tread at the big intersection between MB2 and MB3. We will
keep the work short enough so you will have enough energy to go for a ride
after the work. Please wear close toed shoes and bring work gloves, water,
and snacks for yourself. GATR will have tools, but we could use extra
shovels and loppers.
Harbins Park, 2295 Luke Edwards Rd, Dacula, GA 30019
8:30a – 9:00a: Sign in and safety brief.
9:00a – 11:30a: Trail work on MB2 and MB3.
11:30a – 12:30p: Lunch.
12:30p – ?: Group rides.
GATR has the main pavilion reserved from 9:00a – 12:30p and from
3:30p-5:00p. After the group rides you are welcome to hang out at the
pavilion again and bring something to grill for your dinner.

5-25-2011 Cyclist Dies at Stone Mountain Trish's Note: Be careful out
there! My thoughts go out to Mr. Amestoy's family and friends. The AJC has
coverage here. This is from a mailing list I'm on: "All- Stone Mountain Park Police
will, at times, erect baricades across the street, put up large signs in the
middle of the streets (which become instant dangers to cyclists)... etc. Be
careful out there!
Subject: Rider at Stone Mountain- this past Saturday The gentlemen's name
was Martin Amestoy Info from his daughter: Dad died Saturday morning as a
result of head trauma from a bicycle accident at 7:55am in Stone Mountain
Park. According to witnesses on the site, he came down a hill with his head
down and never saw the plastic barricade he ran into which had been set up
by the park for a walk that morning. My dad knew this loop at the park like
the back of his hand. He had been either running or riding this exact path
for over 25 years from the time we lived in Redan Park. He probably already
passed by this place once or twice earlier that morning on his bike before
the barricade was set up and had no reason to believe anything would be in
the road way the next time he came around the loop. He was wearing a helmet
which got pushed back on his head on impact with the ground. He was
unconscious from the point he hit the ground until he passed at Grady
hospital a few hours later when his heart stopped.
5-26-2011 SORBA Paulding Silver Comet Super Side Trail Work Party
Who: We need you all!
When: June 18th 2011 0800-1200
What: Folks the plan is to host a work party where we have 4 start
locations. The plans is to completely clear or opens the corridor and remove
any debris. I’d like to see (7) 4 person crews each armed with 2 sets of
loppers, 1 fire rakes and a Rogue Hoe (for de-berming).
Where: We'll need (1) 4 person crew to begin in Hiram going east and (1) 4
person crew at the sewerage plant going west and work towards the oncoming
crew.
Then (1) more 4 person crew at the sewerage plant headed west with (1) 4
person crew at Tara Drummond heading east working towards the oncoming crew.
Then (1) more 4 person crew Tara Drummond headed west with (1) 4 person crew
at Rambo Nursery headed east towards the oncoming crew.
The final 4 person crew will also begin at Rambo and head west towards the
Pumpkinvine Trestle Bridge.
Why: 28 people are what we need to open this trail back up and make it
passable for everyone to enjoy. The trail is on the ground already the
corridor just needs to be cleared and the tread cleaned up a little, so
simply show up. We need your help to make this happen.
Lunch will be provided at 12:30 at the Hiram Trailhead

course but we removed the "stick" of the Lolli Pop making it very easy to
navigate!

Monday, MEMORIAL DAY, May 30th at 8am - Big Canoe/Burnt Mtn EPIC RR. We also
updated the parking - This year we are parking at Trinity Church just past
the Big Canoe main entrance! It is also a large circuit instead of a Lolli
Pop. Much better for logistics and sweeping.
*Please note: This is NOT an easy course - notice the words EPIC and
Extreme.... Because of the distance and laps we are offering both CAT 3's
and Masters 35+ the option to race 2 laps. See the race flier and
registration page for details when signing up. 5-27-2011
