11-3-2011 Chili Dawg Rides From EMBA: Chili Dawg Rides Again! Does this mean you ride with a chili dog shoved into your left jersey pocket for lunch at mile 40? Maybe it means you carry a Chihuahua in your jersey pocket in 32 degree weather while riding one-handed on a Schwinn Sting-Ray with a banana seat. NO! It is the Editor's Choice for winter cross-training.

The Ellijay Mountain Bike Association will be hosting, again this year, the return of the Chili Dawg Rides. The kick-off ride will be the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, 2011 at 10:00 AM meeting at Mike and Terry Palmeri's house. There will be a short and medium ride on gravel roads. Afterwards, this is where the chili dawg comes in, everyone will chow down on Terry's Famous Smoked Turkey Chili. Bring your Thanksgiving leftovers. You can burn those extra calories and get rid of your Thanksgiving leftovers! As most of you know that have participated in these rides in the past, the ride is somewhere between 20 - 27 miles or longer on mostly gravel roads. After the ride we eat some hot chili! These rides are a good way to stay in shape through the cold winter months, so that when spring rolls around you can kick some butt. These rides will run on consecutive Saturdays for the winter season. I will be looking for volunteer ride leaders and chili cooks. EMBA will pay for the chili ingredients and we will set up a donation jar at each event as a fundraiser for EMBA. So spread the word. Additional information, including location an dates, can be found on the website at : http://www.ellijaymountainbike.org/

March 3, 2012
For the pre-ride!!! We are offering shuttles for the first 70 riders. After that, you may be own your own (or set up your own shuttle with friends.) Due to the otherwhelming amount of riders we have had in the past, we have had to cap the pre-ride off at this number.

Winter Pizza Ride From Mark Linenburg: The first Winter Pizza ride will start on Thursday November 10 @ 6:00 PM. We will meet at the same location we currently meet for the Thursday Pizza ride in Avondale. Use your discretion about the very cold/windy/wet days. The ride is a winter pace (i.e. moderate) to and from Stone Mountain Park. While in the park, we will do 2 small counterclockwise loops (9.6 miles in the park). The pace has been historically (and should remain) between 22 mph and 23.5 mph in the Park- mainly a steady rotating paceline (you don't have to be in the paceline, if you don't want to be). If you want to attack, drop the group, etc., this ride is not for you. Should you want to sprint on the final lap- no attacking the paceline until the base of auto museum hill (last hill of the final loop). Stone Mountain Park Police will not let you ride in the Park after dusk- unless you have some type of front and rear light.
Winter Pizza ends March 8, 2011.

Chattahoochee Bend State Park From Lisa Browne: " We have formed a committee to build brand new mountain bike trails at Chattahoochee Bend State Park in the northwestern corner of Coweta County. It is an awesome opportunity to get in while the hiking and biking trails are only in the initial phases. My fiancé, Scott Rush, is heading the committee. We need volunteers to help on the committee and help build the trails. We were out there looking at the Parks proposed site for the initial 3 mile loop and it will definitely be a good portion of the park for the trail. However, any state funds are being utilized for Park facilities like roads and restrooms. We need assistance, funds, and equipment to build the trails. Immediately, we need assistance getting the trail mapped out with the GPS coordinates onto our topographical map for presentation to the Park Committee." You can contact Scott at tsrush@charter.net if interested in being on the committee.

The trail style is open and flowing - like a Mini Dwelling Loop at Blankets Creek - and will be a welcome addition to the Taylor Randahl Memorial Bike Trail system. Please join us on Saturday, Nov 12th from 9am - 1pm. Tools and free lunch will be provided. Please bring gloves, water, and closed toe shoes. If you haven't attended a trail building party this year and enjoy Rope Mill and Blankets Creek parks, please help us out and attend this event. Thanks for your support. Hope to see you there. Georgia State Cyclocross Championship The Georgia State Cyclocross Championships is next Sunday at Ft. Yargo in Winder. The usual Georgia Cross schedule will be run with State Champion jerseys awarded in select races. From Dan Coy, the promoter:

"Racers who have been racing cyclocross in Georgia for only the past couple of years have not experienced the Fort Yargo cyclocross event yet. This course became an instant favorite when it was first introduced in 2005. Fort Yargo was the site of the 2008 state championships and because of the nature of the course it guarantees to sort out the best overall cyclocross racer.

Before we preview the course let's take care of a little business first.

1. Fort Yargo is a state park and requires either an annual ParkPass or $5 per vehicle parking fee.
2. This event will be scored using a chip timing system, bring your own chip if you have one, otherwise one will be provided to you.
3. USAC state champ medals will be awarded to the top three GA riders in each race category and a state champ jersey to each of the GA winners.
4. No warming up on the course during races or you will be disqualified from this event and possibly suspended from future races.
5. Ride hard. Race clean and fair. Have fun!

Fort Yargo is an exciting spectator-friendly venue offering a 360 degree view of the action from the playground and pavilion area. Crowds gather around and from one location can watch the start/finish lines, multiple barriers, run-ups, podium presentations and the always entertaining beach crossing. Inevitably riders, responding to the taunts of the spectators, test their skills at the beach and see how far they can ride across the sand before they dismount or thrill the crowd with a spill.

Here's a bit of what the racers can expect to be confronted with. The course begins with an uphill road section, which is not so steep the first couple of times, then the road turns and dives down toward the grass and some tight and twisty action on varying surfaces. Another short section of pavement offers a breather before taking a dirt section through the woods and popping out in another grassy section around the mini golf course. The riders then transition over a couple barriers next to the playground and barrel down the hill and across a bit of gravel toward the beach. Some pro riders have ridden the entire beach but it's not any faster than running. An off-camber hill is the only way back out of the beach and delivers the riders to another set of barriers with a technical approach followed by a short run-up. Remount and pedal back up the hill to the road where you either begin the next lap, or possibly face an all out sprint to decide who is the champion!

There will no pre-registration however to get through day-of registration faster you should sign-up now then pay on site. * Cyclocross racing age is your age on Dec 31, 2012 "

SC State CX Championships The SC State CX Championships will be next Saturday in Greenville at Cleveland Park. Racing beings at 11:00 am.

NC State CX Championships  The NC State CX Championships are Dec. 10 in Winston-Salem at Washington Park.

TN State  CX Championships The TN State CX Championships are Dec. 18 in Gallatin at Lock 4 Park.

11-28-2011 Good Hope Welcomes Cyclists The City of Good Hope, GA in Walton County officially welcomes cyclists. The opening of the bike routes was this weekend. Project Road Share "erected a stand at the park with a map of the city, clearly marking designated routes for cyclists which are viewed as the safest and best cycling paths through Good Hope. The city also has placed five signs, each asking everyone to share the road and be safer, at various points of the city — one on either end of town, along Highway 83, one on Jacks Creek Road, one on Pleasant Valley Road and one at the park itself." The Walton Tribune has a complete article on Good Hope welcoming cyclists.

11-30-2011 Chicopee Night Ride Rescheduled The Chicopee Night Ride scheduled for Nov. 29th has been postponed until Dec. 1. Details are on the SORBA forum.

Let's Get Visible Campaign The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition is beginning their annual Let's Get Visible campaign this week
They remind everyone of these tips:
Use a white headlight and red rear light that are visible from 300 feet. It's the law.
Wear brightly colored (or reflective) clothing.
Ride on the road, not the sidewalk. Bicycles on sidewalks are less visible to drivers who may be turning or backing out of driveways.
Ride with traffic. Motorists and other cyclists are not expecting to see bicycles coming towards them. When a bicycle is riding toward a motorist or cyclist, the amount of time they have to react is greatly reduced.
Ride away from the curb, gutter or shoulder. Motorists are not able to identify a cyclist as quickly if they are riding at the edge of a road. You will also reduce the risk of hitting debris or hazards that may be hiding in the shadows at the edge of the road
Slow down. Most bicycle lights do not illuminate your path as much as a car's headlight. Moving a little slower you greatly improves your ability to scan for debris and hazards.

Outback Bikes Sale Outback Bikes is having their Year End Clearance Sale at both locations--Little 5 Points and Hamilton Mill. All bikes are on sale as is winter gear!
