Rome Velo Rider to Belgium
Rome Velo racer off to Belgium

ROME, Georgia. (August 3, 2012) Rome Velo team member Brandon Pruett of Silver Creek GA arrived in Belgium on August 1st to begin a 20 day racing and training regime hosted by USA Cycling. Brandon competed against many other junior cyclists for this prestigious opportunity to be a member of USA Cycling’s summer development program. The program only accepts 6 junior athletes ages 15-16 each summer and is a major part of USA Cycling’s development process. Brandon’s acceptance is a testament to how far he has developed as a competitive cyclist and a great honor for his team that he trains with, Rome Velo.

USA Cycling’s Summer Development camp selects 6 junior athletes to train and race in Belgium for 20 days. The athletes will compete in 4 single day races and a 4 day stage race, all against many of the top juniors in Europe. Brandon and the other USA riders (2 from Idaho and 3 from California) will also benefit from immersion in a very structured program, learning what it’s like to essentially live like a Pro Cyclist, training and racing every day on the difficult roads of Europe. USA Cycling provides the riders with bikes and takes care of all the details, allowing the riders to focus all their energy on truly learning from the experience. For a 16 year old boy, this is a truly unique experience that Brandon has worked very hard for. The trip is especially important as it will serve to bring Brandon even more notice from national level cycling programs which can help to take him to the next level. USA Cycling is the governing body for all sanctioned racing in the US, and is also charged with developing and selecting athletes to represent the USA in Olympic Cycling events.  Brandon has been racing and training for about 3 years now and has rapidly developed to become one of the top amateur racers in the Southeast region. In 2011 Brandon caught the attention of USA Cycling’s Development Coaches by capturing the Bronze at the Junior Nationals Road Race in Augusta GA. He demonstrated his continuing development with numerous podium finishes for the next year including 2 GA State Championship Titles this year (Criterium).

Brandon has been working with his local team of Rome Velo with both hard training rides and motor pacing. Former Professional racer and National Champion Tina Pic is Brandon’s coach and mentor now for several years with invaluable guidance and support. Of course many local riders especially members of the Coosa Valley Cycling Association (www.cvca.org) contributed to help get Brandon to where he is. A number of CVCA members truly took his drive to heart and helped found the Brandon Pruett Cycling Fund to help with the expenses of both this trip and other National events. And of course all cyclists start the sport with support from a local bike shop. Cycle Therapy of Rome truly got behind the idea of a local rider achieving national success by encouraging Brandon to go to many National competitions and become the best racer he can. When Brandon first started racing, about 3 years ago, he was in Cycle Therapy and one of the mechanics showed Brandon a magazine article about “Life at the house” It was an article on 15-16 year old kids in Belgium learning, living the European style of life and racing. He remarked to Brandon…one day you will be there!” And Brandon has been dreaming of that opportunity since and now that day has come. Brandon continues to play an integral role as a top member of Rome Velo at races throughout the Southeast. Brandon will return in time to assist his team mates for the River Gorge Omnium on August 25-26. The event is very popular in the Southeast and features a downtown Criterium in the heart of Chattanooga plus a very difficult mountain top finish road race atop Raccoon Mountain TN.

The Rome Velo Cycling Team is a USA Cycling Sanctioned Club. The team of 15 athletes is largely drawn from Rome and Floyd County residents. The Team competes throughout Georgia and the Southeast in road cycling races. The team’s mission is to promote healthy living through encouraging youths and adults to become involved in competitive cycling. Rome Velo is always looking for more riders in NW GA who want to take it to the next level. The team is sponsored by Sun Trust Financial Services of Rome, The Claremont House Bed & Breakfast, the Coosa Valley Cycling Association, Courtesy Ford of Rome, Boyd Cycling, Kenda Tires, & Cherokee Cycles of Calhoun. Pirate Race Productions (828) 719-8448 info@pirateraceproductions.com www.bikehighcountry.com
Pirate Race Productions is thrilled to announce The Ascent Bike and Run Hill Climbs this Sunday, August 12, at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club in Blowing Rock, NC.

The Hardest Bicycle Hill Climb in the South is 9.25-miles, with 3,200 feet of ascending, yielding an average grade of 5.9 percent with a maximum pitch of 17.5 percent. Presented by Magic Cycles, the High country's premier bicycle shop, the Ascent course has a "Category 1" rating on Strava.com, the most difficult rating of any paved road in the Southern United States. The course records are held by pro racers Brian Sheedy (45:07) and Alison Arensman (1:01:41). The Ascent bike race is the second stop in the Capo Cycling Apparel King of Pain Series following Boone-Roubaix this past April and Three Peaks USA UltraCross at the Banner Elk Winery on September 23. The the bike and run course uses a brand new, buttery smooth road with incredible scenery around every bend. Unlike other hill climbs, we have the luxury of a two lane road that we can close, meaning your friends and family can watch from anywhere on the course, and you can ride, walk, or drive down from the top. Registration for both the run and the bike are available at Active.com for only $30 and $35 until 3PM, Thursday, August 8 with NO PROCESSING FEES or you can sign up on race day for an additional $5. The Ascent Facebook page will have updates about both the running and bike races. Folks traveling to the Boone Area for the event can find great deals on lodging at www.ExploreBooneArea.com.  ExploreBooneArea.com is your go-to source of information about visiting the North Carolina High Country. The Boone Area is mecca for cyclists thanks to its unmatched beauty, quiet country roads, and notorious climbs. The area is home to a pair of colleges with national champion cycling teams, and some of the nation's most popular and challenging cycling events. Magic Cycles (est. 1993), conveniently located in downtown Boone, is the High Country's premier bike shop for discriminating riders. Whether you're a beginner and just getting started or a pro looking to shave grams of weight or seconds off your time, Magic has a professionally trained staff to take care of your needs. Everyone at Magic Cycles is committed to providing you with the best bike shop experience imaginable. Blowing Rock Ale is a local brand that captures the essence of the High Country as much as you can with a beer. Refreshing, relaxing, recreation—these are part of everyday life in the High Country and these are the things Boone Brewing Company wants people to think about when drinking Blowing Rock Ale. Blue Ridge Mountain Club is: family-focused and community-centric; naturally spectacular location and privileged member programming; completed infrastructure and debt-free; the reasons why more families are choosing to own at Blue Ridge Mountain Club over any other High Country community today are as long as our views and as deep as our valleys. Pirate Race Productions is dedicated to staging and promoting athletic events that are incredibly fun for our participants, valuable marketing opportunities for our sponsors, a positive contribution to our host communities, and provide great entertainment for our spectators. Visit BikeHighCountry.com to learn about tons of fun events including The Ascent, Three Peaks USA, the Wilkesboro Cyclocross Festival, and Boone-Roubaix.
