2-7-2012 Silver Comet Incidences I've heard of two reported muggings of cyclists on the Silver Comet in the last 10 days. One was first hand and the other was 4th or 5th hand. I'm trying to find out more details and will post them when I do. Remember to always carry your cell phone on your person and not in your saddle bag. Don't carry anything of value. Act like you know what you are doing and where you are going. Let someone know where you are going and what time you will be back. Take id with you and keep it on your person. I like something like a RoadID that I can wear. If something does happen, please make a police report to the appropriate police agency such as the Paulding County Sheriff or Cobb County police. They track incidences, and information you have could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

Skyway Epic MTB Race The Skyway Epic will be be May 20th in the Talledga Ranger District in Alabama. The course is 60 miles out and back 6k+' climbing. 2-9-2012 Free Tire Change Clinic Free Flite will be having a free Flat Tire Repair Clinic at all of their locations on March 1 at 6 pm. http://www.freeflite.com.

Silver Comet Follow Up I followed up Wednesday morning with the Cobb County Police Department regarding the supposed incidents on the Silver Comet over the last 2 weeks. No incidents about someone being attacked, robbed, or mugged have been reported since the first of the year until February 8th. There have been some property crimes, namely car breakins at the trail heads. 60% of major crime in Cobb County is property crime according to the police department. The officer said to take precautions such as:

Property safety:
-Do not put your purse or bag in the trunk while you are at the trailhead. Put it on there ahead of time. Thieves will watch for people putting items in the trunk. This applies to other items like GPSs, electronics, and any valuables. Better yet, leave valuables at home.
-Do not hide a key on your vehicle such as under a tire well or in a roof rack.
-Lock your car doors and take the key with you. Many thieves are looking for unlocked cars and will not break windows to get to items.

Personal safety:
-Let someone know where you are going and what time you will be back.Tell them to call you and check on you if you don't return by the expected time.
-Ride/walk/run with someone else if possible.
-Take ID with you such as a driver's license. Cyclists can also wear ID such as a RoadID.
-Act confident. Stand tall and act like you know where you are going and what you are doing.
-Always be alert.
-Take your cell phone and keep it on your person such as in a jersey pocket. Do not put it in your saddle bag.
-If you see something suspicious, get out of the area as quickly as possible.
-Don't keep your IPOD/MP3 player ear buds in both ears. Leave one ear open. Don't turn the volume up so high that you cannot hear what is going on around you.

If you are attacked, call 911! Please report it to the appropriate authorities. Even if you are not harmed, the police want to know. They track crimes. You may have information that will help catch the perpetrators. You may also prevent it from happening to someone else.

2-10-2012 ALTO ALERT! The WBL has pushed ALTO back one more week because of deteriorating weather. There will still be a ride with sprints and points.

2-10-2012 Road Racing Road racing start soon! Up first are the Greenville Spring Training Series and Perry Roubaix! Are you ready to race?

Southern Cross There are only 10 more days to register for Southern Cross! What is Southern Cross?
Southern Cross is an epic cyclocross race based in the Chattahoochee National Forest of north Georgia held on Saturday, February 25th. In the same vein as the The Three Peaks USA, Iron Cross, Hilly Billy Roubaix, and Barry Roubaix the course will consist of a somewhat "traditional" cross course with twists, turns, run-ups & natural barriers. Then participants will head out on a 50 mile loop of dirt and paved roads featuring mountain top vistas, challenging climbs and views of tumbling creeks. Finally the course finishes with another CX course with features that the UCI would not approve like the Wall! Oh, you may encounter beer hand-ups to get you through it.

Bicycle Dreams Movie Bicycle Dreams, the award-winning feature-length documentary about the Race Across America (RAAM), will premiere in Atlanta at the Plaza Theatre on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. as part of the film’s ongoing nationwide winter tour. The screening is presented as a benefit for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and Georgia Bikes! and is co-sponsored by the Southern Bicycle League and Free-Flite Bicycles. The film, which has won numerous awards at film festivals all over the world, “is an up-close look at what RAAM riders go through,” says Stephen Auerbach, the director and producer of Bicycle Dreams. “They deal with searing desert heat, agonizing mountain climbs, and endless stretches of open road. And they do it all while battling extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation. It’s a great subject for a film.”

“Bicycle Dreams is a spectacular and heartfelt film that offers a riveting portrait of extreme courage in the face of inhuman obstacles,” writes TheLoveOfMovies.com. “It is an artistic triumph that renewed my belief in the power of desire and the strength of the human will.” “We are very excited to be able to bring Bicycle Dreams to so many locations along the route that have never had access to the film before,” says Auerbach. “Viewers will be overwhelmed by the amount of pain and suffering these riders go through.”

To capture the mammoth scope of the race, Auerbach worked around the clock with a complement of 18 cameras. Embedded camera operators traveled inside the racers’ support crew vehicles, gaining unprecedented access to the cyclists and their teams. Their footage captured emotional and physical breakdowns, late-night strategy sessions, and great moments of personal triumph, all in intimate detail. Auerbach then took on the enormous task of editing hundreds of hours of material and forming it into a powerful and inspiring look inside the most difficult race on the planet.

Bicycle Dreams also has been named one of the top 10 adventure films of all time by both The Matador Network and Playground Magazine, calling it the best bicycle film since “Breaking Away.” Tickets will be $11 in advance and $15 at the door the night of the show. To purchase advance tickets, order online at www.imathlete.com/events/bicycledreams.  The Plaza Theatre is located at 1049 Ponce De Leon Ave. in Atlanta.

55 Nine Performance Welcome to a new Southeastern Cycling advertiser, 55 Nine Performance! Many of you know Eddie and Namrita O'Dea as some of the south's best endurance racers and as the race promoters of Southern Cross and Fool's Gold. They offer many services for cyclists including Bike Fitting,  Sports Nutrition, Coaching (cyclists & multisport athletes), private instruction (mountain biking, cycling), and clinics (endurance racing, nutrition, training).

As some of you know, I've been in physical therapy for several months for some chronic back, neck, and shoulder injuries. My physical therapist has suggested the my position on the bike may be contributing to my problems. I have a fit with Eddie in the next few weeks and cannot wait to see what we change about my road bike. (I spend more time on my road bike than any other bike.) I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Airport Ride It's been posted to several Facebook groups that residents of the buildings on Peters St. in Castleberry Hills have been complaining that cyclists on Sunday mornings (aka the Airport Ride) have been taking a natural break in full view of their front windows and even on their doorsteps. If you need to take a natural break, find a business or at least go around a corner where no one can see you! Let's keep it decent!

2-23-2012 Protect two-by-two riding in Georgia From the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition:
Existing Georgia law protects the right to ride two abreast, which adds safety to our riding and enables the social element we hold dear. The right to sit next to your fellow traveler is taken for granted when we're driving -- why shouldn't it be the same on a bike?

Today a bill that would take that ability away was introduced in the Georgia Senate: click here for text of bill.
Only three states in the U.S. prohibit riding side-by-side -- let's work to educate our elected officials why it's important that Georgia remain a two abreast state. If you live in one of the following districts, please contact your state senator to let them know you support the right to ride two abreast and ask that they do so as well.

Intown Classics Daylight Saving Time resumes again on Sunday 03/11/12 at 02:00 AM. Therein, we are two weeks away from the advent of the In-Town Classics.
Effective the week of 03/12/12, the Sandy Springs (Tuesday), Peachtree Battle (Wednesday) and Chastain (Thursday) rides will commence at 06:00 PM EDT. Please note - due to the continued aging of the In-Town peloton, these rides will remain Winter Pace until the week of 04/02/12. The Italians call riders who violate this rule “testa di cazzo”. The Sandy Springs ride will be Short Option.

Effective the week of 04/02/12, the Sandy Springs, Peachtree Battle and Chastain rides will start at 06:30 PM EDT. This is the week that restrictor plates will be removed from all bikes. Therein, “Show Me What You’ve Got Night” on the Sandy Springs Ride will be 04/03/12. The Sandy Springs ride will remain Short Option.

Effective 05/01/12, the Sandy Springs ride will initiate Long Option until Labor Day. Mayhem - efforts to go Long Option prior to this date will blow-up in your face (as usual) and earn you eternal testa di cazzo status. This distinction will also readily be awarded to the usual suspect(s) who persist to screw-up the Chastain ride.

Also, note that the Tucker Ride will remain at its Winter start time of 10:00 AM EDT for a few weeks to allow the mornings to warm-up a bit. Tucker will move to its Summer start time of 09:00 AM EDT on 03/31/12.

"We have just received the very happy news that Senator Miller will not pursue passage of SB 468, preferring instead to work with Georgia Bikes on the implementation of a Complete Streets policy over the remainder of this and into the next legislative session. Many thanks to the Senator for his willingness to work with us to protect the rights and safety of all of Georgia's road users!""

Southeast Bike Expo Wrap Up The Southeast Bike Expo was held in Conyers, Georgia at the Georgia International Horse Park February 25-26th. Riders came from all over Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and as far away as New York. This was the first consumer cycling expo held in Georgia. Road, Mountain, and Cyclocross demo bikes were available from Trek, Specialized, Jamis, Blue, Scott, Orbea, Felt, Lynsky, and Niner. Riders took full advantage of the hilly GIHP trails and tested as many bikes per day as they could. Lines could be seen at several of the demo tents as riders waited for bikes to return. Niner reported over 75 test rides on Saturday alone. Stans No Tubes hosted several clinics on how to put together a UST wheelset. Georgia Cross spread the word about cyclocross with Mark Babcock doing cyclocross demonstrations throughout the weekend. Other vendors included local companies ProGold, Thomson, Mulberry Gap Mountain Bike Get-Away, Stuffits, Maxxis, Tifosi, Vee Rubber, the Southern Bicycle League, Southeastern Cycling, and the 24 Hours of Booty. The Cycle Youth mountain bike team hosted a bike swap. Vendors could purchase a table to sell their used gear. Plenty of bike parts, bikes, and goods swapped hands. All proceeds from the Bike Swap benefited the non-profit Junior team. Saturday evening there was a three hour evening ride with bikes outfitted with lights from several companies. Riders could also take out the lights for demo on their own bikes. The promoters said, “This is the inaugural year of this event and we are hoping it will be a special one. We will grow the event over the coming years to one of the premier consumer cycling expo events in the country. Our goal is to educate you the consumer about new and upcoming products. We are going to be working with all the major cycling vendors in the country to bring you the best selection.”

Over 1000 people attended. Proceeds went to SORBA/IMBA. SORBA was also on hand to spread word about mountain bike trail advocacy including the IMBA Trail Care Crew at the Lake Allatoona, GA trails the same weekend. Entrant were given a goodie bag to collect product samples and information.

Specialized brought its demo fleet to the Southeast Bike Expo.
