Basically, we will do three separate 30 minute rides at race pace and one 45 minute ride at race pace. You can do as many/few as you'd like. There are no categories, prizes, numbers or officials. It IS a USAC event (permit pending). Please spread the word. I looked and the 26th is pretty open. I will post a Facebook event soon as well as have the flier up shortly. Since we are not offering prizes or money, we can't call it a race. Think Marietta crit but on grass. That is sort of the idea. I hope to see many of you out there. Pinhoti Trail Fire From the NW GA Backcountry Horseman (applies to mountain bikers, too): Hello (from Kimi Gregg), Please share with other trail users.
Mike Davis, Acting District Ranger for the USFS-Conasauga Ranger District, just provided an update on the wildfire south of Villanow, GA. This fire is near the regional Pinhoti Trail between the Snake Creek Gap on Hwy 136 and Dug Gap west of Dalton, closer to Snake Creek Gap. This area is heavily forested with steep hillsides.
... The Forest Service is staging equipment from the FS/Pinhoti parking lot at Snake Creek Gap on GA 136, four miles south of Villanow. ATVs and perhaps other motorized equipment may be temporarily using this section of the Pinhoti going north from the parking lot. The Pinhoti remains open, but users are urged to avoid the area during the fire. Depending on weather and other factors the fire may not be contained and extinguished for several days. The Pinhoti is being used as a fire break, but the fire has jumped over in some spots.
Some trees may be cut to provide space for helicopter drops of cargo. Landing sites are not being cleared, just space so that a hovering helicopter may lower or raise cargo in a net. The firefighters need ice, water, and other supplies. Medical personnel may need to use the trail should a need arise. The Forest Service will restore the trail condition should the trail be damaged during this process.

SORBA Woodstock Reminders From SORBA Woodstock Reminder and heads-up to SUNDAY morning riders coming to Blankets Creek. Please help spread the word.

The church parking lot next door is still off limits Sunday morning to moutain bikers and will be until further notice. Plus, please don't park close to the entrance of Blankets. Plenty of room needs to be left for Fire & Rescue to get a truck in there. It may be YOU that needs it! Thanks

THIS SUNDAY... July 15th, Rope Mill mountain bike trails will be closed until late afternoon, due to the GA Games Moutain Bike Race. AND THIS SATURDAY, 14th, Rope Mill Trails will be closed in the morning due to GA Games Trail Run. (I'll update this post with what time they expect to be finished... for both Sat & Sun).

So... where to ride Sunday morning --- might I suggest Allatoona Creek Trail or Mt Tabor Trails, not to far from Woodstock and both great trails built by great chapters

7-14-2012 What Trish Does in Her Off Time (Allow me this self indulgence...)What do I do in my off time when not riding bikes, working, dreaming about cyclocross, or updating Southeastern Cycling? Ride horses! This is my favorite girl, Roma the Dutch Warmblood, last Wed. at the barn. The jumps were low, but it was hot out and we were all tired.

Back to your regularly scheduled cycling....

7-16-2012 Huntsville Track Classes From the Alabama Wheelmen: "I'm very excited to announce that we will once again hold track classes at the Huntsville Speedway/Velodrome. There will be three classes, starting at 6 p.m. and concluding at 8 p.m. The dates will be July 24, July 31, and Aug. 7. These classes are for any cyclist who wants to try something new and have some
competitive fun. We are also aiming to prepare folks for the upcoming Alabama State Track Championships, which will be held at the Dick Lane Velodrome in East Point, GA, on Aug. 11. The
events we will do at the speedway will be like those that will be part of the championships at DLV, including scratch and point races, match sprints, individual pursuit, team pursuit, and team sprint. There's no license required, but a donation to offset the cost of the speedway would be appreciated. Bring your road bikes and if you have a track bike bring that too. If you are interested in purchasing a track bike the local shops can set you up. I will be around the SCRD Rocket City Omnium this week- end to spread the word, and answer any questions you might have
about these classes. While these are classes, we will indeed race, and keep results, including an omnium across all three classes. You don't have to attend every class but certainly want to see a good turnout for the first night so please put it on your calendar. The speedway is on Hegia Burrow Road, which is off of Hobbs Island Road near Ditto Landing."--James Dawson

7-17-2012 Cross Clinic Notes:  The question has come up about bringing a road bike for the cross clinic on Aug. 26th at Jim Miller Park. I would not recommend it. Please try to bring a mountain bike with the bar ends removed or a cyclocross bike. Even a hybrid with knobby tires would be ok (if not heavy). Road bikes will slide out on the grass. Please also do not wear your road shoes and cleats. The cleats will probably not survive the clinic intact. Wear mountain bike shoes with mtb pedals or tennis shoes with flat pedals.

Chicopee Work Party From SORBA Gainesville "Trail Work Party at Chicopee Sat July 21, 2012 Join us for a morning of trail maintenance at Chicopee Woods. We will work from 9-1pm. Racing This Weekend  There are several races this weekend. Saturday and Sunday is the Dingo Days of Summer Crits in Gainesville. The GCS Mountain Bike Series wraps up in Helen, GA at Unicoi State Park. ORAMM, the Off Road Assault on Mt. Mitchell, takes place in North Carolina for the endurance mountain bike racers.

Glade Rd. Baptist Church This has been posted several places online. Please DO NOT use the bathrooms at the Glade Road Baptist Church or stop in their parking lot. This church is on several popular routes out of the Sosebee Bike Park or the Cartersville Bud Plant. This is not a public restroom. There are several stores on the routes. Buy a cold drink, and use their restroom.

From the Bartow Daily Tribune: "Sunday morning, a Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputy was dispatched to the Glad Baptist Church at 401 Folsom Glade Road, Rydal, in reference to criminal trespassing.
When the responding officer arrived, he met with various church members who were there for Sunday School.
They said a group of about 50 or more bicyclists had gathered in the church parking lot. When the church members asked them to move so church members could use the parking spaces, the cyclists protested. According to the incident report, they "became very verbal and insulting towards elderly members of the church. The allegedly said to the church members, "You people are why I don't go to church" and "Y'all aren't being very Christian."

Church members also said the cyclists were going in and out of the church's fellowship hall to use the restroom. All the foot traffic was muddying the floors and littering the restroom floors with paper towels, as they were not putting them in the trash cans. The septic system, church members said, was very small and could not handle being flushed so often, which increased the likelihood it would back up. They told the officer they were having homecoming services that day and the restroom would not be available for church members and guests. The church also had to clean the restrooms twice before Sunday school. However, the members dolt he deputy they "did not want to be mean about the situation," even though it had been an ongoing problem. The officer stayed at the church for several minutes until Sunday school started. Several cyclists rode up while the officer was there, but they continued down the road when they saw him."

7-24-2012 Woodland Brook Update Woodland Brook in Vinings is expected to reopen to traffic on Sunday, July 29. The road is an important cut through Vinings for several popular bike rides.

We are excited to announce that Jim Ellis Volkswagen of Marietta is the presenting sponsor, so expect to see them out at Blankets Creek with some sweet vehicles on July 28th as well as race day! We still have plenty of our awesome wicking race shirts left in all sizes S - XL, so sign up soon so you don't miss out on one of these great shirts. You can sign up online, by mail, or in-store at OutSpokin' Bicycles. Those who sign up at OutSpokin' will receive a bonus pair of Swiftwick socks with their registration. We are excited to announce a $500 total cash payout, 4 deep to the solo pro/expert men, with $200 going to the overall Men's solo pro/expert winner.

We have a great lineup of sponsors with great prizes and swag from OutSpokin' Bicycles, Evolution Bicycles, REI, Sports Authority, Personal Savers, Van Michael Salons, Mulberry Gap, Tifosi, Swiftwick, Road ID, Hammer Nutrition, Larabar, and Cascadian Farm. We have shortened the course this year to 7 miles, and it will include VMT (minus the Kevorkian Switchbacks) and Dwelling Loop. Please come out and show your support. This and other Mountain Goat Adventures/SORBA Woodstock events have allowed us to raise over $12,000 in 2012 for continued trail building and maintenance. It takes roughly $10,000 to build a mile of prime-cut Georgia singletrack, so we can use your support now more than ever to continue expanding the facilities at Blankets Creek and Rope Mill Parks.

7-29-2012 Team Share the Road From Lance Dobbs:  "We’re launching a new and exciting cycling club/team here in the metro Atlanta area, Team Share The Road, Inc. We’re first and foremost a non-profit cycling club with heavy emphasis on advocacy, safety, and etiquette….with the addition of a racing team, for those who like to race. Initially, we’re a road cycling team only, but we DO indeed plan to expand into MTB and Track cycling within 2 years. Each week, we organize a Beginners Ride and a Ladies Only Ride (on the Silver Comet Trail), on Saturdays we do a road ride (between Marietta and Roswell), and for our racers, we attend the Tuesday Night Crit (West Oak). When also attend and support advocacy events as well.
Why are we different? Quite simply, we feel cycling is going in the wrong direction; (a) most clubs do very little to actually support and/or grow the sport, (b) most group rides run stop signs, red lights, and exercise poor etiquette….which only fuels our poor, public image, and (c) most clubs do little to show younger, newer riders “proper” etiquette and courtesy among motorists. Consequently, we’re in a negative tailspin per se, and Team Share The Road, Inc. wants to make a fresh, positive impact….to LEAD by example.
By joining our club & team, you will have the chance to literally show other cyclists….and motorists…..that we CAN abide by all traffic laws, ride with courtesy, and coexist on the roadways. You will also be supporting one of the very few, local Beginners and Ladies Only rides, and, support local advocacy efforts. In fact, 10% of our annual budget is allocated to go directly toward local advocacy organizations (Bike Georgia, Atlanta Bicycle Campaign, and Bike Cobb). The more members we obtain, the stronger our impact. Thanks for taking time to consider joining us, and please feel free to check us out at www.team-share-the-road.com. We’d love to have you join us…it just takes a minute!"

Hit and Run From the Barrow Journal (Barrow County, GA, near Gwinnett) "The Georgia State Patrol confirmed it is investigating a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday that critically injured a Barrow County bicyclist. William C. Hubbard, 52, of Auburn, was airlifted from County Line Elementary School to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta around 9 a.m. on July 25 after witnesses found him lying unresponsive in the middle of a nearby road, according to Barrow County Sheriff’s Office report on the incident. Deputies assisted on the scene of the accident, listed as being on the 800 block of Boss Hardy Road. Paramedics told deputies he was unresponsive and suffering from a serious head wound when they arrived to the scene. Witnesses did not see what happened but said they removed the bicycle and the man's helmet in an effort to assist him, the report said. More details will be posted when available."

Sadly, the Gwinnett Touring Club reports that Bill succumbed to his injuries and has passed away Saturday morning. Southeastern Cycling's thoughts are with his family.
