11-1-2012 Savannah Superprestige CX Day 2 (See Day 1's report by Fulton Flyers racer Kim Sawyer at www.georgiacross.com)

Oglethorpe Speedway Park (OSP) in Pooler, Georgia was host to the 5th annual Savannah Superprestige Cyclocross Race weekend. The course for Sunday was the classic Savannah course, flat and fast. The start was on the track. It went into the Death Spiral followed by a set of 2 fast barriers and then back to the track through the finish line. The course went outside of the concrete barriers into a wooded section. Past the first pit was a long sandy straight away. Every race has a signature feature. OSP's is the TFFO. The Two Fingers Flyover was destroyed earlier in the year by a storm, and the OSP crew worked overtime to rebuild and widen it. Riders negotiated the TFFO and then a three step dismount. The course went around the pond although there were no alligator sightings this year. It then came back under the TFFO and towards the Death Spiral. In addition to racing, Sunday had a few special events. "MJ" cooked up Belgian Waffles Sunday morning to benefit the Savannah Wheelmen Juniors Fund. More than one racer was seen holding their stomach from eating too many waffles. A SSP tshirt was given for the best costume for racers and spectators. Mitch Askew worked the microphone for all of the races, providing color commentary to entertain everyone. Sunday's weather challenge was a strong northwest wind kicked up by Hurricane Sandy. Dust and sand clouds could be seen as some fields rolled by.

The Elite Masters started off the day's racing. A small group got off the front of the 35+. Soon it was down to 3 and then 2 as Nate Sibley (Scott Bicycles) rode off the front solo. In the final lap, Daryl Sawyer (Fulton Flyers) and Brady Rogers (Litespeed-BMW) were together. Brady hit the barrier without unclipping and went down. Daryl was able to pull away for 2nd place. Brady held on for third. In the Masters 45+, series leader John Phelan (ACC) took the lead early and never looked back. Ken Jones (Velo Brew) was second, and Michael Schmid (Deeds Publishing) was third.

A small but fast field of Juniors and Cat. 4 women toed the line next. Anne Moore (Moody/Evergreen) took the win for the second time this weekend in the Cat. 4 women. Jen Undutch (Sorella Cycling) was second. In the Juniors 15-18, Thomas Petit won with Haegan Altizer (Junior Flyers) in 2nd, and Willem Kaiser (Junior Flyers) in 3rd. Brothers Troy and Leon Waine (Junior Flyers) battled it out in the Juniors 14 and under. Leon was able to hang onto the wheel of the older Juniors for part of the first, distancing himself a bit from Leon. He would hold on to take the win.

In the Men's Cat. 3, Ryan Murray (Nouveau Velo) won with Hutch Zimmerman on the second step of the podium. The Women's 1/2/3 provided spectators with good action. There was some question as to whether one rider would be able to race. "She" rolled up to the line with a very hairy mustache. After officials determined it was Amy Frank (ALTX) in a Halloween costume, the ladies were allowed to go. While Shannon Greenhill (Peachtree Bikes) took the early lead, she was not able to shake Paula Burkes (Vantaggio) and Elizabeth Lee (Garneau Factory Team). Finally with two laps to go, Shannon pulled away and soloed to the win. Paula and Elizabeth chased but could not catch her. Paula made it through the barriers before Elizabeth, and she held on for 2nd place. Elizabeth got third. From the back of the Women's 1/2/3, Trish Albert (Sorella Cycling) was estatic not to get lapped by Shannon for the first time this year.

The Men's Cat. 4 field was dominated by Austin Sholly (Macon Cyclocross). He took an early lead and kept pulling further in front of the rest of the field. Charlite Putnal (Big Ring Racing) fought hard for second place. In the Masters. Cat. 4, Floridian Todd Leedy (352 Racing) won with Johnny Mayero (Frazier Cycling) in second place. Unfortunately, there were also several crashes.

The course in Savannah is the fastest that Georgia Cross visits. Average speeds for the Cat. 1/2/3 race approached 18 mph. Thomas Turner (Team Jamis) won by a wide margin, and Doug Ollerenshaw (Litespeed-BWM) got second.

The Singlespeed racers were able to run huge gears not normally run in Georgia. It paid to choose wisely, so that they were not spinning out. Series leader Aaron Pyle (ACC). David Marbut (Fulton Flyers) and Jon Wienandt (Team Fond Du Lac / Oshkosh Cyclery) rounded out the podium.

11-2-2012 Allatoona Trails Closed The Allatoona Trails in Acworth are closed until 1-1-2013 per Cobb County. There will be hunting in the park, and the trails are not open.

11-3-2012 NCGA Tuesday Night Ride From NCGA: "Time change on Sunday so Nancy G's at Night on Tuesday. For those not familiar, here is the the scoop. This Nancy G's at Night ride is a stay together group ride. We ride together at a tempo pace on the flats and regroup at the top of each climb. No one is left behind. We tend to find the hills and you are free to climb at whatever pace suits your training goals. We stick to the low traffic roads and ride together for safety.... Ride time is 6:30 from Nancy G's at the Fountain Oaks Shopping Center, Roswell Road at Long Island Road. Ride time is usually around 2 - 2:15 hours. No ride if raining but if it does rain on Tuesday, we will ride on Wednesday." Trish's note: This is a ride for experienced riders. Even though it's no drop, this is not a beginner's ride. The average speed may be 18+ mph even in the dark.

11-8-2012 Racing This Week More cyclocross is happening this weekend! Not that this should come as a surprise to anyone at this time of year. The Wilkesboro CX Festival is Sat. and Sunday in Wilkesboro, NC. In Chattanooga, the 10 Hub Endurance Chattanooga CX Race #2,   will happen on Saturday. The fifth round of  NCCX # is also Sunday.  Bamacross is at Lake Cullman on Sunday. Georgia Cross heads to Centennial High School in Roswell on Sunday. For mountain bikers, Saturday is the Chainbuster Oak Mountain 9/6 Hours in Birmingham, AL.

WBL 2013: Headline News News: Every Saturday at 10 a.m., a 3 hour ride will depart from the Hub / Jittery Joes at 5 Points. Beginning the first Saturday in December, the WBL will kickoff and the ride start will move to the regular location at Sunshine Cycles. The Winter Bike League is a series of winter training rides that take place in Athens, Georgia during December, January and February. These Events take place every Saturday and start at Sunshine Cycles at 10 a.m. ewt (eastern window time / 15 minutes after 10). All rides in December will be 3-4 hours (or less in cases of inclement weather). Safety is a primary concern on these rides. So is a consistent, quick tempo and a smooth, steady double paceline. These rides are not designed to drop riders, but neither do we cater to the weakest link in the chain. If you are the weakest link, you will need to raise your game. If you are the strongest, these rides are perfect for you because you will not overly tax yourself, but you'll log a great training ride. The goal is to ride at a super-steady tempo unlike anything you've ever done. We want to teach you how to ride and finish strong, not how to kill yourself and several others too. These rides are not rip-roaring fast, but neither do we crawl. We typically average about 20 to 21 miles per hour, shop to shop. Sometimes, however, controlling the pace is like herding cats--a difficult task. Maps are available on the website for every ride, buth text and interactive. Print one and put it in ye pocket or log it into your own GPS. We emphasize safety and we obey all rules of the road. We even provide a sag. We are like your mama, only better. Sprints begin in late December. We have sprints for all categories and Ladies too. We have points for riding and prizes for sprint winners, but best of all, we have great rides. We visit different parts of the pale every week, punching into the hinterlands on the far-reaching escapades. We roam far and wide, hither and yon. We push the envelope. We take the cake. Yes, we are all that and even more.

11-15-2012  Latest GBRA News
New GBRA Website The Georgia Bicycle Racing Association is proud to announce that we are launching a new website! The new site has an all new backend that will allow us a great deal of functionality moving forward. A new results upload system will allow us to get the GCS results online and tabulated in a timely manner and allow riders and team to keep track of their results throughout the season. It is the same system that is currently in use by several other states local associations, so we do know that it works, and are working on tailoring the system to suit the needs of GBRA and racing within the state. GBRA would like to thank the folks over at Big Nerd Ranch for their donated time in getting the intial portion of the system up and running for us. There is more work to be done on the back end of the site, but things are in place for us to be able to use many of the new sites great features, and you will see that most of the 2012 results are currently uploaded. The GBRA board is working hard to make the 2013 race season the best yet and we hope that this new website will be a great first step towards making that happen.

The 2013 GBRA Board is in the planning stages for the 2013 GCS and we will be updating the new website with some of those new details as they are decided upon. Southeastern Bike Expo  From Southeast Bike Expo: The Southeast Bike Expo has released the dates for the 2013 expo February 22nd-24th. The Southeast Bike Expo donated $3300 to IMBA/SORBA this year and will partner with them again for 2013. Saturday and Sunday February 23rd-24th will be open to the general public. There were over 1000 attendees this year. The 2012 edition had over 600 bikes for demo and 70 vendors. This year with the addition of other major bike brands there could be over a 1000 demo bikes to ride. Friday February 22nd will be a free dealer only day. This will give vendors time to meet with potential customers in the Southeast. In addition to having bikes to demo there will also be other industry vendors showing off all kinds of products. Companies like Tifosi Optics, Light & Motion, Camelbak, Shimano, Kenda, and Thomson. Our goal is to put on a fun event in a great location for very low cost to manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. This year we have added a metric century on Saturday February 23rd. We will be returning to The Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers Georgia for our second year. But we will be moving the location to the Grand Prix Plaza. This gives us the opportunity to have a more secure expo area that is enclosed by fence. There is a 1.5 mile road bike test loop as well. We still get to use onsite world class MTB trails as the GIHP is the location of the 1996 MTB Olympics. This unique outdoor demo area has space for over 1000 vendors, and is more consumer friendly.

The Southeast Bike Expo will take place February 22nd-24th 2013. To purchase advance tickets go to https://www.bikereg.com/Net/16902  Manufacturers looking to setup at the expo please email us at sebikex@gmail.com or register at https://www.bikereg.com/Net/16901  Please check us out at www.sebikex.com  and on facebook www.facebook.com/sebikex Hope to see you there.--Brian Molloy

USA Crits New Events and Live Streaming for the 2013 USA CRITS Season High speed racing drama returns to the streets of the US beginning March 9 in Tucson, Arizona
Athens, GA -- Ten high-speed cycling events in some of the country’s most compelling communities will make up the 2013 USA CRITS Series. The best criterium racers from around the world will compete from one side of the nation to the other for a chance at the coveted Champion System Orange Jersey and a prize purse worth $50,000.

Highlights of next year's series include a new stop in Glencoe, Illinois for the Glencoe Grand Prix, the 10th anniversary of the Presbyterian Hospital Invitational and the 30th edition of the Chris Thater Memorial in Binghamton, New York. Other events include beloved races such as the Terrapin Athens Twilight Criterium, Tour de Grove, and the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium. The combination of these and the remaining events on the calendar will culminate with the return of the USA CRITS Finals in 2013 to Las Vegas! "The Series brings together a combined tradition of racing totalling 150 years of this uniquely American style of bike racing." says USA CRITS founder Gene Dixon. "The events feature eight exciting nighttime races plus the former National Championship venue in Glencoe and the 30th Chris Thater Memorial." While all of the 2013 season’s events are also part of USA Cycling’s 2013 National Criterium Calendar (NCC), Dixon explains why the races of the USA CRITS Championship Series stand out among other cycling events in the nation.

"We are excited about being able to bring a strong focus to 10 of the 41 outstanding race days that make up the NCC. With all our events placed within the NCC schedule, the Series now allows consistent access to USA CRITS events to teams that traditionally have not focused on criterium racing. This just furthers the development of new icons within our sport." In addition to separate cash purses awarded at each event, men and women riders in the USA CRITS Series accrue points towards individual and team classifications. The Series’ points leaders will wear the Champion System Orange Jersey of the overall leader following each race, with the final winners crowned in Las Vegas. And although the USA CRITS Series will crisscross the nation, cycling fans the world over will be able to enjoy all of the action and excitement from race to race thanks to live streaming coverage sponsored by SmartStop Self Storage.  “SmartStop Self Storage supports a healthy and active life style," says Michele Cataldo, VP Marketing-Self Storage. "We have employees who participate in the sport as well as those who enjoy it as a spectator. The cycling sport is such a fantastic team effort that brings the team to victory, much like our SmartStop Self Storage work ethic. Bringing the “live streaming” to http://www.smartstopselfstorage.com will give customers a close glimpse of the action and excitement that this sport has to offer.”

Now in its seventh year, the USA CRITS Championship Series has brought the thrill of bike racing to some of America’s most flourishing downtown districts. It’s a unique opportunity to get a close look at both world and national champion-level athletes while they navigate the intricacies of a closed circuit course at high speeds right in the heart of a vital urban setting. Stay tuned to USACRITS.com for all the latest information regarding the 2013 Series throughout the season.

11-28-2012 Photo Contest Win Total self promotion: My photo of Ronnie Bratcher ringing a cowbell at the Marietta CX race won 1st place for the Sports and Action Category for the Cobb County Parks and Rec 2012 photo contest. Another one of my photos of a C Town Bikes rider placed 3rd. I've entered several times and am over the barrier at winning! (you can't be over the moon in a cross race, you need to be over the barrier....) It's my first photo contest win!!

11-29-2013 2013 Calendar The 2013 Calendar is up! It is still very preliminary. Quite a few race organizations have not released their 2013 dates. The confirmed 2013 dates are marked with an asterisk (*).  I'll be updating the calendar throughout the winter. If you have a submission, email me at sttarlite@hotmail.com.

I just got word that there will be a XC MTB race at Blanket's Creek in 2013. Oh yeah!
