With the “voting” out of the way, the annual meeting will still go ahead as planned on the 6th of October and will include planning for the 2013 season and discussion about the state of racing in the state of Georgia, so we would love for as many members to attend the meeting to meet your new board members and add to the discussions."

10-12-2012 Blanket's Creek Blanket's Creek made an appearance this week on a story about cycling on cnn.com.

Dedicated Athlete Product Review First, let me tell you the story of Go Jus (or was it Go Juice?). A young Johnny Gamble brought his first sports drink to the Marietta Tuesday Night crit years ago for riders to try. After one swallow, most riders stopped. It tasted that bad. Maybe it was the hose water used to mix it up, maybe it was something else. Johnny went back to his lab and reformulated it into another concoction--Rapidaide--and it was good, really good. The product sold well. Johnny went on to develop EP-NO, which was used by riders like Shonny Vanlandingham, and several other sports supplements. Fast forward a few years. In 2012, Johnny has brought Dedicated Athlete back. DA has a passion for proving high nutritional value training products to help athletes be successful and live an active lifestyle.

Let me get something out of the way first, I have a very sensitive stomach. A lot of supplements and sports drinks I have to be careful taking because my stomach will get upset. I've tried most of the products on the market over the years and can state simply and emphatically that my stomach doesn't like most things during a ride race except water. I can eat most gels as long as I don't use more than one every hour.

I've had the chance to use two of the products in the current DA line up. The first was the Athlete's Multi Vitamin. The DA website says that "Compared to other Multivitamin formulas The Athlete’s Multivitamin’s main differences are the high potency B12 and B complex, Boron, and very specific antioxidants in quantities that research shows may increase muscular endurance." I have a full blood panel done with my primary care doctor as part of my yearly physical. I'm usually not deficient in any areas, but he recommends that I take a multivitamin daily to prevent any problems. For years I've taken a potassium supplement on any days I am going to ride hard or race in addition to the daily multi vitamin. My antecdotal experience says the potassium helps to prevent leg cramps. Now that you are bored reading my medical history, let's get to the Athlete's Multi Vitamin. I cut the daily dose in half based on my stomach's preference and the amount of vitamins compared to my usual daily vitamin. My stomach did not get upset. I also stopped the potassium supplement during the time I took the Athlete's Mult Vitamin. I did not experience my usual cramping problems during a mountain bike race and quite a few hot, hard road rides this past summer in Atlanta.

The second product I tried was the Vegan Workout Recovery Formula. It's currently available only in chocolate. Being vegan, there are no animal products in the recovery drink. Soy, Hemp, and Rice proteins are used instead. It also contains dextrose and cane juice to replenish muscle glycogen as well as fatty acids for inflammation and plenty of antioxidants. I used it after a few hard group road rides and after a cyclocross race. Because of my stomach issues, I used half the amount recommended in slightly more water. I rode the day after I used it for recovery from the cyclocross race, and my legs felt good on a two hour mountain bike ride. Sometimes my legs will be dead the day after a cross race and sometimes they will feel ok. The recovery drink may have had a role in the feeling good. My stomach did not get upset after using it any of the times. The best thing is the Workout Recovery Formula tastes like chocolate crack. My love of chocolate is widely known, so maybe I'm a bit biased. To try something out, I froze a small amount and drank it a few hours later. It was as almost good as my favorite chocolate milk shake from a well known fast food place. With more than 250 calories per serving, it may be too caloric for people watching their weight. I would like to see a version with less calories, or you can use less like I did. I'd also suggest having it a few other flavors in case someone does not like chocolate (I know it's strange, but there are people that don't like chocolate.). When mixing the powder in the water, you have to really shake up the bottle as sometimes the powder wanted to clump. It works, it tastes great, what's not to love?

All DA products are certified drug free by the Banned Substances Control Group. More information about the BSCG can be found at http://www.bscg.org/Dedicated Athlete will be handing out samples at the Georgia Cross races throughout the season, so be sure to stop by their tent!.

Disclaimer: I recommend that you clear any supplements with your doctor if you have any concerns or a health problem or medical condition. Always talk to your doctor or health professional about your medical needs. Dedicated Athlete has been a long time supporter of Southeastern Cycling. The products were provided for me free to try, but I was not paid for the review.

10-17-2012 DLV Fall Work Party From the DLV: "We will be hosting our first off-season workday on Saturday November 17th starting at 9am. We'll have plenty to do, one major job we are looking to complete is burying wires for the timing system. We should have a job list up within the next couple of weeks, but there is definitely be plenty of leaf raking and tree protecting (from invasives) to be done, so put the date in your calendar. The day will score points for the 2013 season, and will count towards your two day volunteer discount off season passes for next year."

Augusta Cross Race Course Preview Ross Douglas, Augusta GACX Promoter provides this preview of the course for Sunday: "Okay boys, girls and children of all ages.. This is one race you don't want to miss.. Very classic Euro course (minus the mud) and will leave you with the feeling you're glad you came..

Race starts on a slight grass up hill, switch backs in a big open field, then down and through a park with some nice flowing sections.. A nice tight U turn and on to pavement you go (the only recovery area).. This will lead you to a nice swooping section that will lead you to a nice run up.. (of course you won't be thinking that at the time. Back across the park to the field through some sand and a nice long grass stretch a U turn and then a sprint to the line.. Slightly up hill of course just to make sure you work hard..

Please pull all the way on the field toward the fence, parking might be tight, volunteers will be there to guide you.." Because of unforseen circumstances, the course will NOT be available Saturday to preride as there is another event at the park that day.

Silver Comet Avoidance Riders may wish to avoid the Silver Comet on two upcoming dates. Oct. 27th is the Silver Comet Half Marathon starting at 7:45 at Floyd Rd./Silver Comet Depot. Runners will go out about 6.5 west and turn around. While the trail may not be "closed," there will be 2000 runners. My advice is to drive to the Florence Rd. trailhead in Powder Springs and go west. From my experience, most of the runners will be done by 11 am. There will be a charity walk on Nov. 3rd starting at Mavell Road. I have no information on the size of the walk. It may be best to avoid the first few miles of the Comet early that morning.

10-29-2012 Roads Being Resurfaced I have heard that Mt. Vernon Road in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs is being resurfaced. Cooper Lake Road in Smyna is also being resurfaced. Be careful if you ride on either of those roads.
