April 2013
4-1-2012 Alpha Roubaix Dirt Ride From
Alpha Bikes: “Ride
gravel. On my road bike. What? No way!” Way! Or "au contraire" –
as they would say in France. On Sunday April 7, the world’s best
road racers will gather in France for the 111th running of the
Paris-Roubaix race. 260 kilometers, 50 km of cobblestone. The
Queen of the Classics. We’re doing our own mini
“Alpha-Roubaix” in tribute to the grand daddy of the
mixed-surface races. Ours won’t be a race, but a ride. And it
will be your grand dad’s ride. Before all this asphalt, your
grand dad rode a lot of dirt miles thank you very much … uphill
both ways! We’re planning a 30-mile route, with about 12 miles
of well-groomed gravel roads in Alpharetta and Milton. Riding
your road bike on dirt is really not difficult. Just run your
tires to about 80 psi and take tight turns a little slower than
you would on asphalt. We’ll be there to coach you through it.
We’ll even have a few “challenges” for those who are game. So
join us on Sunday for a casual ride through horse country. Taste
a little dirt. Dream of denying Tom Boonen his 5th title. And
add to your riding repertoire. Hey! That’s also French. Bonne
chance!

4-9-2013 Boone-Roubaix: Spring Classic Bicycle Race & Gran
Fondo Boone-Roubaix, the “Hell of the High Country,” returns for the fourth
year on Saturday, April 20, offering cyclists from around the country a chance
to take on the dirt roads and steep climbs of the North Carolina High Country.
Riders from 15 states including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, New
York, and Ohio, are already signed up to ride in this scenic and tough race.
Thanks to the generous support of Performance Bike, the nation’s leading bicycle
retailer, this year recreational riders will have a chance to test themselves
while enjoying the stunning vistas of the Boone area at a leisurely pace in the
new “Gran Fondo” event, that will immediately follow the race on the same
course. Pirate Race Productions is excited to once again partner with the
Appalachian State University student Wine to Water chapter to donate proceeds
from the event to help provide clean drinking water to communities around the
world. Boone-Roubaix offers a unique course that consists of 50 miles of quiet
country roads with unparalleled views, including 10 miles that is unpaved.
“Boone-Roubaix is different because of the course. You don’t ride on gravel or
dirt roads in a typical road race,” says Patrick Beeson (Mock Orange Racing -
Winson-Salem, NC), “but it’s also different because of the laid-back atmosphere,
which is more akin to a mountain bike race and not one on skinny tires.” Melissa
Cooper (Storm Racing – Durham, NC), hoping to improve her second place finish in
2012, agrees, “I had a great time at Boone-Roubaix last year! I’m looking
forward to racing it again.”
The race starts at the High Country Fairgrounds, close to the hotels, shops, and
restaurants that make the picturesque college town of Boone such a great
vacation destination. To help riders around the course, the Performance Bike
Spin Doctors will be on hand providing mechanic support, and rest stops will be
stocked by Hammer Nutrition, Paceline Chamois Butt’r, and Perform Pain Relief.
For added inspiration, Blowing Rock Brewing Company is hosting the post race
party at the finish line, and there will be over $2,000 in cash awards and
prizes from Performance, Capo Cycling Apparel, Panaracer tires, and more.
ExploreBooneArea.com is offering lots of great deals on lodging, making the
event a perfect excuse for a weekend getaway for riders and their families.
Participants can register for the race and Gran Fondo online at BikeReg.com for
$50 through Thursday, April 18. Registration will also be available on race day
from 8:30AM to 9:30AM for $60. For more information, including the course map,
highlight videos, directions, and lodging info, visit the event website at

Cycling in the Queen City of Charlotte, NC CHARLOTTE, NC
- The bustling city with a down-home feel of Charlotte, NC, will play host to
the
10th Annual Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium this Saturday,
April 13, 2013. Boasting one of the largest purses for a single-day criterium
event ($75,000) and drawing 35,000+ spectators, it's no wonder that the
Presbyterian Hospital Invitational is a favorite among criterium riders. Held in
Charlotte's Center City, the race is a challenging 1.2 mile course that brings
riders through the start/finish area two times per lap. "We have a beautiful
center city, great cycling fan support. Our city and corporate leaders are very
supportive," said Thad Fischer, Race Director. "The teams and riders, our
volunteers, the course...it all adds up to make it special." The event is in its
10th year and benefits The Brain Tumor Fund Carolinas. "I was contacted to meet
with the board of the Brain Tumor Fund Carolinas and some corporate leaders
about the prospects of an annual cycling event in Charlotte," Fischer commented.
"We exchanged ideas and long term visions, and the next thing I knew is someone
said, "Let's do it", and now ten years later, here we are. We have also helped
raise of $5 million in the fight against cancer over the past nine years." A new
event for the race is a community ride on the race course. Starting at 3pm,
everyone can feel like a pro racer as they cross the finish with each lap within
all the fencing, hearing music and chants of the crowd of spectators. Hilton
Clarke (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) goes into this weekend in the top spot
after assuming the lead in the USA CRITS Championship Series from teammate Luke
Keough, who was absent at the March 23rd Delray Beach Twilight. But the gap
between he and Shane Kline of Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis is short, with
Kline trailing by only 19 points. Rafael Meran of CRCA/Foundation sits in third.
In the women's competition, the 2012 USA CRITS Champion Erica Allar
(CARE4Cycling powered by Solomon Corp) enters Charlotte ahead of Joanie Caron
(Primal Pro Women p/b BH) by 44 points. Allar's teammate, Lenore Pipes,
currently rounds out the top three spots in the women's race for the Orange
Leader's Jersey.

Kent Gordis Productions to Live Stream Remaining USA CRITS Events
Six-time Emmy Award Winner Kent Gordis has joined USA CRITS to live stream the
remaining events in the 2013 Championship Series. Gordis' work includes eight
Olympic Games, 6 Tours de France, and the Biathlon World Cup. The heroism in
cycling and the intensity of the sport has always been very appealing to Gordis.
As a small child growing up in Switzerland, Gordis has vivid memory of Eddy
Merckx riding the Tour de France. "I think in light of what's happened with the
Lance Armstrong scandal, I really believe USA CRITS, which has been around for a
while, and of course the crtierium themselves around for even longer, I really
believe it's an opportunity for this kind of bike racing to stand out a little
bit," said Gordis. "A lot of money has been pumped into a couple events on the
American circuit to try and replicate the Tour de France. But they're posted
huge deficits over the course of the years, so I believe that now with the
scandal and with less money coming into that part of the sport, it's an
opportunity for the crits to stand out and to really shine. That's why I'm a big
believer in USA CRITS. I think that it's truly American bike racing. It goes
back over 100 years, and I think they can really be ultimately the savior of the
whole sport." The strategy to cover the USA CRITS Series races will be to use
resources as cleverly as possible. There will be four live camera operators at
each course, one more than was previously used, and two fixed cameras--one on
the finish and one on the pit. "We're going to have a devise called the
TriCaster, which is kind of a studio in a box. It's all HD, it's very good
quality, it's new generation. It's very expensive, but we'll be able to
replicate a lot of what's done in sports television. Although I'm really excited
about it and I want to make a huge splash, there's definitely going to be a bit
of a learning curve. I don't think we're going to be exactly where we want to be
right away, but we'll be pretty darn close." Ultimately, Gordis' objective is to
help make the rest of the cycling season, outside of the tours in California and
Colorado, more important. "That's no way to run a sport. It's not good for
anybody--the teams, the athletes, the spectators. My number one objective is I'd
like to see a USA CRITS well-funded and thriving and growing. The number one
thing we need is to make sure the athletes, more than anybody else, benefit
financially from the sport. We've got these wonderful athletes, the best
cyclists in the world, and the way they make a living today is unacceptable.
That really has to improve." All-in-all, Gordis is very happy about joining up
with USA CRITS to produce the live stream. "I just want to say to me, especially
because of what we've just gone through as a sport, a lot of it has been
soul-searching. All I really care about is the sport. I know collectively it's
been a very depressing time, it's been hard for us to deal with, so I'm looking
forward to the opportunities. This is a huge opportunity for USA CRITS to really
shine. And I want to give a lot of credit to Gene [Dixon, Director of USA CRITS]
because Gene really has worked hard to create this great concept. A lot of it
has been in anonymity, and he's still there. He's doing it, and events are
benefiting from him, the sport is benefiting from him." Be sure to join Kent
Gordis, USA CRITS and live stream sponsor SmartStop Self Storage and catch the
Presbyterian Hospital Invitational this Saturday, April 13, by going to

(April 10, 2013) – The 12th Annual Historic Roswell Criterium returns on Sunday,
April 28, 2013 with an expanded race course in the heart of historic Roswell.
The schedule of events for spectators and athletes will include a recreational
bicycle ride, kids bicycle rodeo, 11 bicycle races, Moncrief Heating & Air Kids'
Zone, Vendor Village and Expo, and two New Belgium Beer Gardens. Having started
in 2002, the Historic Roswell Criterium has established itself as the largest
pro/am criterium in the Southeast and second largest single-day race in the
United States, surpassing 750 total race registrations for the day.
For the first time in 12 years, the Historic Roswell Criterium will introduce a
new race course. The criterium loop will be extended to 1.2 miles in length, now
including Heart of Roswell Park as the southern-most turn of the race route. The
long straightaway on Canton Street passes many of the popular restaurants and
shops in Historic Roswell where spectators will enjoy a prime viewing
experience. The challenging four corners of the course will require cyclists
(75-150 in each race) to use high speeds and precise skills to navigate the
turns. The start/finish line will remain on Canton Street in front of the Fickle
Pickle Restaurant. “All the merchants and restaurants in the area are excited to
be part of a longer course for the races. The Historic Roswell Criterium is a
showcase for cycling and a showcase for Roswell. It has become an open house for
merchants and restaurants to shine in front of thousands of people. Roswell is
becoming an event destination,” said Sally Johnson, president of the Historic
Roswell Merchant’s Association and organizer of Alive After 5 Roswell. The first
Alive After 5 for this year will take place April 18, beginning the eighth year
for this free event held the third Thursday from April to October. Canton Street
in Roswell was recognized as recently by the Georgia Planning Association as a
2011 Great Places in Georgia - Great Street.
April 28 will kick off with the Roswell Mayor’s Ride, a recreational ride to
showcase the City of Roswell. This event, organized by Bike Roswell, is suitable
for all ages & abilities and is the perfect way to begin the day of bicycling
fun in Roswell. There are three ride options that begin at 8 a.m. from Roswell
Area Park, ranging from a family six mile ride, to 20-mile and 42-mile ride
options. Advanced registration is open at BikeReg.com, $30 per individual, $75
per three-person family, $80 for a four-person family and $10 per each family
member beyond four. The six-mile family ride is free.

women racers. The men’s and women’s professional races (Men’s Pro 1/2 and
Women’s Pro 1/2/3) at the end of the day will feature some of the best athletes
in North America. The Historic Roswell Criterium continues for a fourth season
as part of the USA CRITS Speed Week Series. This racing series has a combine
prize purse of more than $120,000 for eight days of racing in Georgia and South
Carolina. Advance registration fees for all adult races range from $45 to $50.
Two junior races return this year for up-and-coming pros of tomorrow.
Registration is $30 for boys and girls ages 10-14 and 15-18. For younger
children on bicycles and tricycles, it will be the 12th year for the annual Kids
Races and Rodeo. The Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell Safety Rodeo begins at 3
p.m. (registration begins at 2 p.m.) next to the Roswell United Methodist Church
and is free for children six to 12 years of age with a signed waiver. All Rodeo
graduates are then invited to participate in Kids Races at 5 p.m.
An expanded Vendor Village and Expo will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. along
Canton and Webb streets at the south end of the bicycle race course. Some of the
professional teams will park official support vehicles in this area so that fans
can easily take photos and receive athlete autographs. The Moncrief Heating &
Air Kids' Zone will be part of the Expo and will be open until 5 p.m. One New
Belgium Beer Garden will be located on Elizabeth Way this year, with a second
location at the north end of Canton Street next to Woodstock Street. Throughout
the day, spectators should look for restaurant and shop specials in Historic
Roswell.
“The Historic Roswell Criterium has become so much more than just a day of
bicycle races in our community. It is a tradition that focuses on fitness,
family, food and fun,” said Roswell Mayor Jere Wood. “It’s a great springtime

community and international level. Our 100 mile course covers some of the most
scenic and lightly traveled roads anywhere in western North Carolina. Those of
you who are seeking a challenge will find it in the 9,600 feet of ascension on
that course. For a still challenging but slightly easier ride (a mere 6,500 feet
of climbing), you might want to try the 100 kilometer ride. This ride covers
about 64 miles and actually goes over Devil's Fork Gap and the Appalachian Trail
into Tennessee for a few miles. Click on the "courses" button for a complete
course description. The amenities this year include lockers and showers available
for both men and women, as well as, seven well supplied rest stops along the
course. We will have a great free meal after the ride for everyone. Each rider
will get a commemorative T-shirt*. A limited number of low cost college dorm
rooms are also available (See the "accommodations" pages on our website). Finish
times for all riders of the 100 mile and 100 kilometer rides will be posted to
this website after the event.

Racing This Weekend This weekend has a bit of everything.
The Boone-Roubaix: The
Hell of the High Country takes place in NC. Some of the best crit action
comes to Anniston, AL on Saturday at the
Sunny King Crit! (See the press
release below). Sunday is the
Foothills RR in Piedmont, AL.
Past Sunny King Champions Return To Anniston Among the
wealth of talent lining up at the 2013 Sunny King Criterium, are several of the
race’s past champions. The event, which is set once again to take place at the
center of Anniston, Alabama’s Noble Street Festival on the 20th of April, will
be revisited not only by 2012 winners Issac Howe (Team Smartstop presented by
Mountain Khakis) and Erica Allar (CARE4Cycling powered by Solomon Corp), but by
a host of previous victors including Hilton Clarke and Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare),
Howe’s teammate Frank Travieso and veteran women riders Laura Van Gilder (Mellow
Mushroom Racing) and Tina Pic (Colavita-Fine Cooking). “Sunny King has that
gradual uphill to the finish, which is a cool aspect of that course,” says 2008
winner Hilton Clarke. “It’s really a tough sprint out of the last corner. (But)
our team has a lot of experience together at this point, so I think right now
it’s playing to our advantage a bit. The team has a really good system going,
and we’ve just hit the ground running this year.” Teammate Karl Menzies, who’s
been a key part of Clarke’s unbroken string of victories this year, stood atop
the Sunny King podium back in 2009, and fondly remembers the ambience on the
night of his victory. “It’s a great atmosphere (there),” says Menzies recalling
that evening four year ago. “I love that race. The people there are awesome. You
never know what can happen at that race. I won out of a two-man breakaway with
Kyle Wamsley, but people have won it from sprints, people have lapped the field,
and people have won it from breakaways. It’s one of the courses where you have
to be ready for anything.” That’s a sentiment echoed by 2007 winner Frank
Travieso. “The year that I won my team controlled the race with one lap to go,”
remembers the former Sunny King champion who has joined the Team Smartstop
presented by Mountain Khakis team for this season. “Colavita was working during
the last lap for Alejandro Borrajo, but I passed him right on the line. It was a
big moment for me and my team.”
That same year Laura Van Gilder took the women’s title, and is returning to
Anniston in 2013 virtually as solid as she has ever been. “My form is strong
heading into Sunny King,” says Van Gilder, who’s had a number of top 5 finishes
already this year. “I’m happy to remain competitive and enjoy mixing it up with
all the women who are pedaling on the racing circuit. My sponsor, Mellow
Mushroom, is in Anniston and I am very loyal to those roots and their support of
me.” One of the women who she’ll be facing is Sunny King's sole two-time winner
Tina Pic, who has returned from retirement to reinvigorate the Colavita-Fine
Cooking squad. "(The race) always has fantastic crowd support," says Pic. "The
course is great because of the uphill (rise) at the end, and the wins are always
hard fought."
Many of the same riders racing on Saturday night will also be
participating in the annual Foothills Classic Road Race on Sunday the 21st and
features over 3000 feet of climbing throughout the day’s effort. Heralded as a
Top 10 event in Alabama by the state's tourism bureau, those fans in attendance
are treated to views from all around the course via a large full-color
monitor.“I love the big screen (on the course) where you can see all the
spectators screaming to the riders,” says Frank Travieso. For those not able to
get to Anniston in person, the race will once again be seen can once again be
seen online at a number of locations including:

Sunny King Results Alzate, Rivera Triumph At
Sunny King Criterium
New UnitedHealthcare fast man Carlos Alzate took home his first win of the 2013
season, out sprinting Predator Cycling's Sergio Hernandez at the 2013 Sunny King
Criterium in Anniston Alabama, Saturday April 20th. In the women's event young
cycling phenom Coryn Rivera (Marian University Cycling Team) got past reigning
National Criterium Calendar (NCC) champion Erica Allar (CARE4CYCLING p/b Solomon
Corp) right at the finish line to add to her long line of collegiate victories.
The evening's professional racing began not long before the
sunlight faded over the "Model City," with large crowds enjoying the atmosphere
of the annual Noble Street Festival. Despite fielding a large number of riders,
including two-time Sunny King champion Tina Pic, the Colavita-Fine Cooking squad
had to battle throughout the women's race just as hard as any other team out on
course. Attempts at a breakaway from the likes of Rivera, teammate Ivy Audrain,
Morgan Patton (Team Novo Nordisk), and Scotti Wilborne (LeBorne Development),
were unsuccessful at breaking the combined efforts of the field to not let any
one rider get away from the pack. As the laps ticked down and it was clear that
a sprint finish was in the offing, Colavita once again attempted to assert some
dominance over the race, sending Lindsay Bayer out on the attack with two laps
to go. Once she was brought back into the fold, the riders came out of the final
turn of the evening with Allar striking out first. The CARE4CYCLING rider seemed
to have the advantage on the long, uphill drag to the finish but Rivera, who was
biding her time several wheels back, launched herself up the left hand side of
the course and snatched victory away from Allar at the last possible moment. "I
have a teammate here...Ivy, and we tried to do a little lead out plan, like a
one-two punch at the end," said Coryn following the win. "And I was at the right
place at the right time, and I got the 'W.'" Colavita's Jen Purcell, who
recovered from a wreck earlier on in the race, positioned herself well enough to
take the final step on the podium behind Allar.
In the men's race, the opposite scenario proved out. 2009 Sunny King champion
Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare), Sergio Hernandez, Winston David (United
Healthcare of Georgia p/b The 706 Project), 2007 Sunny King winner Frank
Travieso (Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis) and teammate Thomas Brown, along
with David Guttenplan (AG Bicycles/Guttenplan Coaching) and Alzate found
themselves in the winning move not long before the midpoint of the 60-lap event.
Thanks to the commitment of the two UnitedHealthcare riders and the rest of the
firepower in the breakaway, the group were able to lap the field and thus secure
the first seven places in the final results for themselves. At that point, every
team who had had a man in that escape knew that they had to find a key position
in the remaining laps in order to bring their breakaway rider to the front of
the field for the final sprint. Predator took up the challenge first and
consumed a fair amount of what remained of the race to try and set up Hernandez.
Then it was UnitedHealthcare who put their near-patented "Blue Train" lead out
into motion, overtaking the efforts of Predator and positioning not one, but two
riders for victory. Team Smartstop's Shane Kline made a final attempt at trying
to bring his team within striking distance of the victory, but
UnitedHealthcare's strength was once again unmatchable. Alzate performed a
well-executed bike throw at the line and edged out Hernandez to become the 2013
Sunny King Champion. Teammate Menzies held on for third.
“I want to thank God,” Alzate told the assembled crowd. "And I’m very excited,
because I’m going to have a baby girl very soon.”
The locally well-attended event was streamed live to the world on several
high-profile cycling websites and received universal acclaim within the sport
for its high quality and innovative approach to cycling coverage. The #sunnykingcrit
hash tag began to trend significantly across the Twitter social media platform
during the event and in the 24 hours following the race's conclusion. Both
Hernandez and Rivera had successful rides on the day following the 2013 Sunny
King Criterium, with both riders winning the Foothills Classic Road Race in
their respective categories.
