2-2-2013 Bud Phillips Memorial Ride The Bud Phillips Memorial Ride will be Feb. 10th. It will start at 2:00 pm from Free Flite in Canton. The route is 23 miles and will be taken at a procession pace with everyone trying to stay together.

5 Hour Energy Team Camp Training Camp Comes to Georgia for 5-hour Energy presented by Kenda Racing Team
DAHLONEGA, GEORIGA (January 31, 2013) – The top professional men’s cycling team in the U.S. from last year is headed to the summer bicycling mecca of the north Georgia mountains for its winter training camp and sponsor symposium next month. From February 16-22, 2013, the 5-hour ENERGY® presented by Kenda Racing Team will head to the hilly terrain of Dahlonega, Georgia to test equipment and to work on fitness. It will also allow two members of the professional road cycling team to go off-road and compete in Southern Cross, the first endurance cyclo-cross race in the Southeast. The week will include wind tunnel testing and two meet-and-greet events for cycling fans.

Dahlonega is the headquarters for On The Rivet Management, which owns and operates the UCI Continental cycling team. The last two seasons, On The Rivet-owned teams have won more than 60 races, including the 2012 team championship on USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar (NRC). The February training camp and sponsor symposium offers a full week for all athletes, support staff and sponsors to work side by side and prepare for the upcoming season, which begins March 22-25 at the Redlands Bicycle Classic in Redlands, California.

“This training camp is unique because the riders are coming together for the first time. We have a home-field advantage in and around Dahlonega since On The Rivet is based here,” said Directeur Sportif Frankie Andreu, a 12-year pro rider himself who is in his fourth year as team director. “It’s exciting to have the guys out on the road with new Hincapie team kits and Devinci bikes. We use this time to meet our sponsors and refine all the equipment for individual riders, but we also find it as important to mesh as a team, and start building a strategy for the season.”

The team will spend eight days in Georgia to adjust and refine new equipment, such as the carbon road bicycles by Devinci Cycles. This is the first UCI Continental professional road cycling team to be sponsored by Devinci, using Leo SL and Leo T2 frames. Each bike will be loaded with FSA cock pit, Vision wheels, Kenda tires and microSHIFT drive train. Bold red, yellow and white team kits, created by Hincapie Sportswear, replicate the same colors used by title sponsor 5-hour ENERGY.

Two days of camp will include mobile wind tunnel testing with Speed Tunnel. This is the first wind tunnel that is designed exclusively for cyclists, offers yaw angle, produces industry standard 30 miles-per-hour wind speeds, and can be set up at any location. Speed Tunnel training sessions will be videotaped and available to watch on the team web site.

Team camp will kick off Saturday, February 16 with Francisco “Paco” Mancebo of Spain and Max Jenkins of USA participating in the 50-mile Southern Cross event at Monteluce Winery in Dahlonega. In addition to being the first endurance cyclo-cross race in the Southeast, Southern Cross is the first race of the 2013 American UltraCross Championship Series. Mancebo is a two-time winner (2009-10) of the Spanish Mountain Bike Marathon Championship and Jenkins won three cyclo-cross races in Sacramento, Calif. this winter. All members of the 5-hour ENERGY team who are not racing will host a finish line celebration for spectators and cyclo-cross participants for the conclusion of the race. The event expects more than 400 riders for this endurance event, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Winery.
At the end of an intense week of training, the Team will host a Team Presentation Gala on Friday, February 22. This event will be hosted by the new Monday Night Brewing, an Atlanta-based craft brewery which opened earlier this month near Atlantic Station. Cycling fans are invited from 7-9:00 p.m. to try the new craft beers and meet the pro athletes and staff of the 5-hour ENERGY presented by Kenda Racing Team. Admission to the event ($15 in advance, $20 at the door) includes a private brewery tour, beer tasting and souvenir glass. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Atlanta Bicycle Coalition by the 5-hour ENERGY team. To pre-purchase your tickets, visit www.ontherivetmanagement.com/tix.html.

2-3-2013 Cyclcross World Championships I've spent the last 3 days at the Cyclocross World Championships in Louisville, KY. It's been amazing! I'm sure a lot of you have seen my Facebook updates. I'll share some photos over the next week from Saturday's races. My feet hurt, I'm tired of being cold, and I'm just tired. I wouldn't trade it for the world! It was amazing! I was lucky to share it with so many from Georgia Cyclocross as well!

Perimeter North Magazine Southeastern Cycling was mentioned in an article on cycling in Perimeter North Magazine! Trish's notes: Some of the rides they chose to highlight only happen in DST, so be sure to check with the ride leader or sponsoring organization to see if it is a year round ride. Also, the Hell of the North ride out of Roswell is now the NCGA Sunday Training Ride. Further details on the rides are on the Rides Page.

2-13-2013 Silver Comet News From PATH: "Portions of the Silver Comet Trail have been in place for almost fifteen years. During that time, trees have been sawed up and left to decay, signs have been run down by motorists, and a few concrete slabs have settled. In short, there is a bit of deferred maintenance that needs to be addressed. This winter, PATH will inventory deferred maintenance needs in Paulding and Polk Counties and attempt to bring the trail back to peak condition. We will identify excessive vegetative debris, broken signs, missing bollards, faded striping, etc. and organize the repair of same during the winter months. Be aware, this effort will require intermittent closing of some sections of the trail. Check the PATH website before venturing out for a winter ride. We will do our best to keep you informed of any closings or detours. This effort is being funded in part by a Building Community Network grant from The Home Depot Foundation and in part from your donations to the 2012 Capital Campaign."

Georgia Rides to the Capitol City Officials to Ride and Rally for Improved Bicycle Conditions ATLANTA—On March 26, 2013 the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association (MAMA) will co-sponsor, along with Georgia Bikes and the Georgia Municipal Association, the Eighth Annual “Georgia Rides to the Capitol” event to raise support for the development of a regional-scale bicycle network of both on-road facilities and multi-use-trails, and cycling connections focused around major transit facilities, activity centers and schools.

The bike ride will have police escorted routes departing from the cities of Decatur and Roswell. There will also be a three-block ceremonial ride from Hurt Park in the city of Atlanta to the Capitol and several auxiliary rides. More than 1,000 bike enthusiasts are expected to join the ride that will culminate in a press conference on the Capitol steps with metro mayors and council members, state legislators and other state officials highlighting the importance of funding for pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and other alternative forms of transportation.

“Transportation should be about providing options for people,” said Decatur City Commissioner Fred Boykin, owner of Bicycle South and one of the event organizers. “Most car trips are very short – running errands and the like - and many young people today don’t even want to get into a car. Communities that can offer alternatives to driving like cycling, walking and transit attract young people and families and can help reduce congestion, improve our air quality and encourage a healthy lifestyle. They also offer healthy options for seniors too!”

During the 2012 event, an estimated 1,200 bicycle riders and more than 30 Atlanta metro-area mayors and city council members converged on the state Capitol to call for improved bicycle and pedestrian networks and a statewide Complete Streets policy. Georgia Department of Transportation officials who attended the GRTCC event heard the “Complete Streets” rally call and subsequently convened and coordinated a complete Streets policy task force, working with stakeholder groups like Georgia Bikes to address specific components of the policy. At its Sept. 20, 2012 meeting, the State Transportation Board, the governing body of Georgia’s DOT, unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the agency’s newly unveiled “Complete Streets” design policy. “This statewide Complete Streets policy ensures that all future roadway projects in Georgia that are funded with state or federal dollars must address the safety needs of all road users, including pedestrians and people who bike,” said Georgia Bikes Executive Director Brent Buice. During the 2013 Georgia Rides to the Capitol event, participants will call on state elected and DOT leaders to:1) Implement the statewide Complete Streets policy using federal funds set aside for bicycle and pedestrian projects; 2) Protect the legal rights of cyclists; and
3) Dedicate a fair share of funding for bicycle and pedestrian facilities and infrastructure. “The ride to the Capitol is my favorite bicycle ride of the year,” said Roswell Mayor Jere Wood, who will lead the bicycle ride from Roswell. “It’s not only fun, it’s a great way to demonstrate to the state that there is strong support for bicycling in Georgia.”

The bike ride is free and open to the public. Bicyclists are estimated to arrive at the Capitol at 11:40 a.m. The estimated departure times for originating cities are: Decatur at 10:45 a.m. and Roswell at 9:45 a.m. For more information and to register, visit www.GeorgiaRidesToTheCapitol.org.

Sope Creek Trails From SORBA:  Preparations Begin for Bicyclists on Trails at Sope Creek Sandy Springs: Visitors to Sope Creek and the popular fitness trail loop at Cochran Shoals between Interstate North and Columns Drive in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) may notice changes in the coming weeks as park staff prepares to implement a special regulation allowing expanded bicycle access on these trails. This regulation incorporates responses to comments received on the proposed regulation published in the Federal Register in September, 2012. The regulation is expected to take effect in mid-to late April. The exact date will be 30 days after its final publication in the Federal Register, which is expected sometime in March. For the text of the new regulation, please visit http://1.usa.gov/MVMEAU. Beginning February 22, CRNRA staff will be installing bike barriers at 26 trail intersections where the newly designated multi-use trail meets pedestrian-only trails. The purpose of the barriers is to keep bikes on the 6.7 miles of newly designated multi-use trails, while preserving the walking experience for pedestrian users on other trails. The installation of the bike barriers is planned for February 22 and 23 and March 6 through 8. After the bike barriers are installed, park staff will then put in place additional regulatory signage closer to the actual date when bicycles are allowed.
