Falls RR and Conestee Park Crit). There will be series overall awards for the
Top 3 in each division, which will be awarded after the final race.
1-7-2013 TBRA Schedule TBRA has
released their mountain bike and road racing schedules for 2013. The
Southeastern Cycling 2013 Calendar reflects the
changes. I'm working on updating Alabama and CCA.
1-8-2013 Rider Hit Louis "Bud" Phillips was
struck by a truck while riding on Sunday afternoon. He was traveling west on
Cumming Highway near the on ramp to I-575. Bud is a long time cycling enthusiast
and customer of Free Flite Bicycles in Marietta. He is in a coma with severe
head and chest trauma as well as other injuries. His prognosis is very guarded.
There are no details of the accident. His girlfriend asked a friend of theirs in
the cycling community to pass along a request that everyone carry some sort of
ID on them because Bud did not have any identification on him. The hospital did
not know who he was and had him listed as a "John Doe."
I HIGHLY recommend that everyone get a ROAD ID or similar ID to
wear. I never leave home on my bike or walk without mine. Even if you have a
phone, it doesn't say who you are. An ID bracelet or card will quickly let first
responders know your name and contact information.
Alpha Bikes Tool School Alpha Bikes will be hosting
Park Took School
starting January 15th. Jan 15th is Drivetrain, Jan. 17 is Brakes I, Jan. 22

1-14-2013 Silver Comet Trailhead Break-ins I have a
report from a friend that his car was broken into at the Mavell Road trailhead
in Smyrna on Sunday morning. He said that there were car break-ins at several
trailheads within a few hours that morning. The crooks used the card at a gas
station and a Target. Always hide your valuables or take them with you! Better
yet, don't bring them and leave them in your car. Be safe!
1-15-2012 Officials Training Interested in becoming
a USA Cycling official in Georgia?
Contact GBRA for more information about a possible upcoming class.
Cyclist Hit Bud Phillips, the cyclist that was hit near
575 the other week, passed away from his injuries today. A memorial ride is
being planned. I will post details when I have them.
Another Cyclist Gone Skip Floodquist, a long time rider
on the Saturday Sky Loop ride, passed away this weekend from natural causes
while riding on the Silver Comet doing what he loved. I shared many
conversations with Skip as we got dropped from the group over the years. I also
remember one 28 or 29 degree ride a couple of winters ago with there were only 3
of us crazy enough to show up. We cut it short, but we had a fun ride. You will
be missed, Skip!

Boone Roubaix Boone-Roubaix: Spring Classic Bicycle
Race & Gran Fondo April 20
4th Annual "Hell of the High Country" Challenges Cyclists with Unpaved Roads
Early Registration Discounts and Prize Drawing
The Hell of the High Country returns Saturday, April 20 for the fourth year!
Cyclists from across the U.S. will descend upon the North Carolina High Country
to test themselves on a unique route featuring unpaved roads, stunning mountain
vistas, and unmatched hospitality. Thanks to the generous support of Performance
Bike this year will feature both the age-based Race competition as well as a
Gran Fondo for riders who want to enjoy the breathtaking scenery at a casual
pace. Registration is only $35 until January 27, and includes a chance to win a
$275 Selle San Marco saddle. Boone-Roubaix will again benefit Wine To Water, a
Boone-based 501(c)3 non-profit aid organization focused on providing clean
drinking water to needy people around the world.
Boone-Roubaix is a unique opportunity for recreational cyclists and weekend
warriors to participate in a Spring Classic. At races like the the "Hell of the
North" Paris-Roubaix, professional racers face endless miles of cobble stone
pavé in the midst of the brutal northern European spring. The Hell of the High
Country has gained renown in the Southeast and beyond as a rare chance to test
your mettle in a similar challenge. Boone-Roubaix consists of a 50 mile route
along the New River and through the Blue Ridge Mountains. On the course cyclists
have to cover 10 miles of unpaved roads, and surmount a series of challenging
climbs. The most notorious section, dubbed "the Koppenberg of the High Country"
after the infamous hill in the Tour of Flanders, consists of a pair of quarter
mile climbs with 20% grades on a mile stretch of dirt road.
The North Carolina High Country is a magnet for cyclists of all stripes thanks
to its unmatched beauty, quiet country roads, and extensive trails. With the
addition of the Gran Fondo to the extremely popular race, Boone-Roubaix will
offer recreational riders a chance to enjoy our incredible roads and warm
southern hospitality. Gran Fondo participants will benefit from well stocked
rest stops and full support along the route from the Performance Bike Spin
Doctors, Hammer Nutrition, and Perform Pain Relief, as well as the free
post-race party hosted by Blowing Rock Ale.
Total participation is capped at 250 for the Race, and 100 for the Gran Fondo,
so cyclists are encouraged to register soon at
www.bikereg.com/Net/18048
to guarantee a spot. Cyclists can register for the Race or Gran Fondo on
BikeReg.com for only $35 through January 27. As an added incentive, everyone who
registers by the 27th will be entered into a drawing for a $275 Selle San Marco
Aspide Carbon FX Saddle provided by Performance Bike. On January 28,
registration rates increase to $40, but everyone who signs up by February 28
will be entered to a second drawing for a set of Look Keo Max 2 Carbon Limited
Edition Pedals also from Performance Bike. On April 1, registration increases to
$50 and goes up to $60 on race day, so cyclists who register early can save -
and win - big. No racing licenses are required for any category. For additional

1-18-2013 MTB Trails Closed Most of the Atlanta
area mountain bike trails are closed including Ft. Yargo, Rope Mill, Blanket's
Creek, Allatoona, Mt. Tabor, and Big Creek because of the rain this week. Many
will be closed through the weekend. Please check the trail status before
venturing out! It's a good weekend for
Rome
Winter CX! *Update* Word on the street is that
Chicopee and Blanket's Creek
will be open on Sunday. Ft. Yargo and Big Creek are already open. Ft. Yargo is
supposedly "good" considering all the rain but with the usual mud holes. The
Silver Comet Super Side Trail is in good shape. SORBA Paulding said that most of
Mt. Tabor is good except the meadow, which is still really gross.
