East Point Grand Prix Finale, Sept. 6, 2003

Although I have not heard any official word, from the crowd at Saturday night's East Point Grand Prix finale at the track, I'd say it was a success. Early estimates put the crowd at over 1000. It was good to see a diverse mix of people: mountain bikers, roadies, commuters, advocacy folks, members of the East Point community, non-cyclists and the racers. The Bicycle Little League racers rode hard under the guidance of former Pursuit National Champion Angie Vargas, and little Jessica Smith (NARC/Free Flite) stole the hearts of the audience with her attempts to stay in front. Jame Carney (Prime Alliance-The Bike Shop) won the Grand Prix over Chad Hartley (Jittery Joes) after a nail biting 50 lap points race.

Kenny Labbe (US Postal) on the boards for the first race of the night for the Pro/Am Riders.

Jessica Smith (left) and Quint Smith race for Freeflite-NARC. Jessica stole the show when she nearly updstaged two of the older riders in the Bicycle Little League Miss and Out race.
