SouthSide Century Ride For the second year, we are thrilled to announce our partner charity is Soles for Cole. S4C is a charity created by Cole Croteau and Christian Cullen to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis and support families of victims of this terrible disease.
Spin through the quiet country roads of beautiful Coweta, Spalding and Meriwether Counties. The event starts and finishes in historic Senoia. Ride is fully supported with a central well-stocked rest stop/party zone including nutrition, hydration, ice, bike mechanics and entertainment. SAG vehicles will be on the course. The cloverleaf route pattern allows cyclists riding different distances to stay together longer. Decisions on your ride distance, 35, 59, 75, or 100 miles, can be made as you go. Plenty of parking at the start! Triathletes welcome. Route Description: All routes begin with a short “stem” ride out to the spacious covered pavilion in Haralson. This is the location of the fully-supported rest stop “party zone” at the center of the “cloverleaf” route design. There are four unique loops of 17 – 25 miles with no overlaps. Each loop returns to the central rest stop. High energy Soles for Cole volunteers are promising some surprises at the rest stop throughout the day! Road and Para-cycling National Championships Cancelled Form USA Cycling USA Cycling announced on Tuesday that the 2020 USA Cycling Collegiate and Para-cycling Road Championships scheduled for May 6-10 in Augusta, Georgia will be cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic. “Given the uncertainty with regard to extended school closures, travel restrictions, and the cancellations impacting the collegiate road season, we made the difficult decision to cancel the event for this year,” said Chuck Hodge, USA Cycling Chief of Racing and Events. After communicating with the collegiate community, the 2021 USA Cycling Collegiate Road championships will be scheduled for May 7-9 in Augusta, Georgia. “After considering alternatives, including a postponement, it was decided that a cancellation would be necessary,” stated Liz Kollar, Director of Youth and Collegiate Development. USA Cycling will work with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee on 2021 dates for the Para-cycling Championships. In addition, opportunities for those graduating seniors who were planning on participating in the 2020 Collegiate Road Nationals are being explored for the 2021 race.

3-19-2020 Athens Twilight Rescheduled From Swagger: Athens, GA – The Athens Orthopedic Clinic Twilight Criterium presented by Terrapin, an annual springtime tradition, will now be a fall tradition, if only for a year. Local organizers have decided to postpone the 41st edition of the AOC Twilight to September 18-19, 2020.

Coupled with the CDC ‘s eight week recommendation for gatherings, USA Cycling’s (cycling’s national governing body) suspension of event permits through May 3, and the aggressive measures Athens Clarke-County have taken in the last 36 hours to curb the spread of COVID-19, the AOC Twilight ran out of time. “We felt we had no path forward to continue with an April date,” says Event Director, Ashley Travieso. “We had hoped to continue with a spring date, knowing how important this event is to both the local community and to the national and international cycling community. We were optimistically hoping circumstances might change prior to our target announcement date of April 6, but it is evident this will not happen.” The AOC Twilight weekend provides a lifestyle-defining event for Athens, offering something for everyone – the largest 5k run in Athens, competitive and non-competitive cycling events, kids events, a free music stage, and, of course, beer gardens – and at the same time provides an economic boost for restaurants, bars, and hotels. “Cycling, running, and walking are all great individual activities, and we hope everyone stays active, healthy, and safe,” adds Travieso. “Our hope is to create this amazing atmosphere the race is known for in the Fall of 2020 and return to the Spring in 2021.” There are national implications with the current situation, as well. “Events were the first to go, including professional cycling races. The early season of racing has been decimated, yet we are working closely with USA CRITS to revive a late season series of criteriums,” says Travieso.

3-18-2020 Cobb County Parks Cobb County has said outdoor parks will remain open, and restrooms will be cleaned at regular intervals. Trish’s Note: My guess this is subject to change.

3-17-2020 MTB Trails Clinton Nature Park is closed for 14 days starting March 15 by Douglas County.

Columns Drive Parking If you park at Columns Drive to road ride or mtb this is from the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area: Visitors accessing the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Columns Drive parking lot will notice a change in the coming weeks. A section of the gravel area has always been privately owned property and is utilized by the gas utility contractor for accessing the utility right-of-way. This area has been blocked off by the property owner Riverview Condominiums. Riverview Condominiums owns a section of the gravel area and has installed yellow bollard posts along their boundary. These bollards delineate their property line from the National Park Service property. As a result, the CRNRA will be making adjustments to the gravel area adjacent to the bollards to resolve anticipated issues and is researching parking solutions that fit within the park mission and compliance. Visitors may utilize parking areas located at Johnson Ferry South, Johnson Ferry North, Sope Creek, and Interstate North for access to Cochran Shoals.

Blanket’s Creek News Some good news from SORBA Woodstock! Trish’s Note: There is no timeline on this project. Who’s ready for great news! We need some right? The USA Corp of Engineers has finally approved our expert trail we are calling Gnarnia. We have been waiting almost a year for this approval news and it’s finally here! This expert trail will begin at the South Loop trail head and be comprised of narrow puncheons, steep cliff exposure, rock line crawls and much more. This trail by far has some of the rockiest terrain in all of Blankets Creek. It’s been on the list of dreams since the park was created 20 years ago and it’s finally approved to build!

We anticipate it’s going to cost $50K – $75K to build out via a combination of volunteer work and a professional trail building company. There will be some machine cut work and hand cut sections. Stay tuned for details of an upcoming fundraiser with sponsorship levels that we are putting together. We’ll have to pull together as a community to fund this one, but finally after years of building progression for all users, it’s going to be awesome to add a expert tech trail to the top of it all! Stay tuned for more details! Congrats to all those that worked to make this happen!

Mountain Goat Adventures Reschedules Events From Mountain Goat Adventures: The CDC has just issued a recommendation that for the next 8 weeks, organizers cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States. Several states have already issued bans on gatherings above a certain size. While we may be being overly cautious and I’d love to be able to move forward with these events, we feel that it is in the best interest of the safety of our participants, volunteers, and society in general to reschedule these events when the risk is lower and gathering bans have been lifted.

The following events are POSTPONED and will be rescheduled with dates still TBD:
March 28 – Rope Mill Spring Thaw Trail Run
April 18 – Blankets Creek Dirty 15/30 MTB Race
April 18 – Blankets Creek Trail Run
April 25 – Cohutta 100/Big Frog 65/Old Copper 30 MTB race
April 26 – Big Frog 50k/13.1/7 mile trail run
While we do not have any reschedule dates confirmed yet, all potential dates are after June 27th.

Rescheduling all these events is a huge undertaking for us so PLEASE PLEASE give us time to speak with land managers to schedule new dates so that we can handle these event reschedules in a somewhat organized manner. This could take a couple of weeks to get in order. All entries will transfer to the new dates and if you are unable to attend we will take care of you – we don’t want to just take your money but PLEASE do not email us individually asking about refunds or new dates. We will email you with all new information pertinent to your event and and details about refunds or deferrals once we have it and will be handling one event at a time. WE WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU, but please give us time to get it all sorted out.

Londonderry Speed Bumps -A warning from Don Dutson about the new speedbumps on Londonberry in Buckhead. No  more 40 mph on this downhill. Bummer! Londonberry is a very popular road to ride down. Please be careful! “Don’t let these new rubber speed bumps catch you by surprise while riding your bike at speed. Fortunately, they have now been painted so they are more easily recognized. It appears that more will be added along the full length of the street. They may be ridden over at 20 mph with a significant jolt. It might be best not to try to ride over them at significantly higher speeds on this steep downhill.”

2-25-2020 WBL History Ever wonder how THE WBL came into existence? There is a great write up on the WBL Facebook page this week. Reading it is like peeking back at how long I’ve been racing in Georgia (1998 is the answer). I know some of them and recognize all of the names. Those were the early years of my racing as well. I got to know a lot of the Athens crew through mountain bike racing at the old GAP series and the roadies back in my road and (first go around) track day. Who remembers the Zaxby’s pro team? You can still walk into some older Zaxbys and see a team photo on the wall. Go learn you some history and see why it is THE WBL. (For the record, I am not a Zealot. I’ve never done a WBL. It’s a bit out of my league.)
