Tour of the Southern Highlands Press Release:  Woodstock, Georgia (November 28, 2016) – Tour of the Southern Highlands Stage Race, the only Pro/Am stage race in the Southeast since the Tour de Georgia, announces new host cities for 2017!

Over the past five years, former professional cyclist, Nathan O’Neill and his partner, Betty Hodges, have grown the Tour of the Southern Highlands into a major stage race on the cycling calendar for the Southeast. The multi-day, Pro/Am race outgrew its previous 5-year location in 2016, and as the last wheel crossed the finish line in March 2016 the search was on. It took nearly 7 months to locate the ideal partnerships and locations to move forward and continue to grow. Woodstock & Ball Ground, GA expressed an interest in the partnership, capitalizing on existing road rider terrain, as well as the potential for event growth and regional economic impact for years to come. “We have an active built-in cycling community in Woodstock and surrounding areas, and bringing a National cycling race to our community is a natural fit for locals and visitors,” stated Jeff Moon, Woodstock City Manager. “The City of Ball Ground is known for superior road cycling by many advocates and we look forward to being part of this exciting event in 2017 along with Woodstock and Cherokee County,” added Eric Wilmarth, Ball Ground City Manager.

The event begins on Friday, March 3, 2017 with an exciting Professional Criterium for both Men & Women, in downtown Woodstock. Frequently described as “NASCAR on bicycles,” the criterium will feature vendors, live music, kid’s bicycle races, a fat tire criterium and more!   Saturday, March 4, 2017, the amateurs join the action alongside the pros for a Merckx Time Trial and a Circuit Race. Then, an epic road race, with over 1600 feet of climbing for each 16 mile lap, around the Ball Ground Community concludes the racing on Sunday, March 5. The three-day event is already attracting attention from many top race teams and has been circled on the U.S. Junior National Team calendar as a “Selection Race”. “We are excited to have new partners in Woodstock & Ball Ground, to continue to build a legendary stage race in Georgia, offering challenging courses and amazing fields, while continuing our tradition of promoting growth in racing, especially junior’s and women’s racing. These two cities are active and progressive cities, and they absolutely exhibit the qualities we know are important to the growth and accessibility of cycling,” said race director, Nathan

11-25-2016 The 2017 Race Calendar is updated as of 11-24-2016. I’ll keep checking and updating as things come in, I don’t anticipate having many more updates until the major road calendars (NC/SC, GA, AL, TN) start coming out in late Jan. 2017. 2017 races are either marked with an asterisk (*) or the heading says “2017.”

11-23-2016 Thanksgiving Rides I normally don’t post many one off rides, but I’ve had a few people ask about Thanksgiving day road rides. Here are two I know of: Brookhaven Thankful Ride: What are you thankful for? The 19th annual Thankful Ride happens again this year on—guess what?—Thanksgiving Day morning! What better time to gather with fellow bike riders, enjoy quiet residential roads of Brookhaven and Chamblee, and work up an appetite for that turkey/tofurkey dinner? The ride is 26 miles (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6510377) and leaves at 9 AM from the parking lot of the Brookhaven MARTA Station (Apple Valley side). The route is painted on the road so you can ride at your own pace. This year we’ve also pre-marked a 13 mile route for those looking for something shorter (
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/11227682 ). Also The Airport Ride will be meeting at the usual place & time for a hammerfest.

11-22-2016 Slow Week It’s a slow week. I think everyone is eating turkey. The only two events I know of going on are Turkey Cross and Stuffed Cross in the Chattanooga area. Georgia Cross takes a week off before preparing for the State Championships at Elks on December 4.

11-17-2015 Wildfire Updates I would encourage to check the status of your favorite trails in Western NC, Chattanooga, East TN, and N. GA. As everyone knows, the wildfire smoke has drifted over much of TN, SC, and GA as the fires continue to burn. I can’t keep up with the fire status timely enough to post on SE Cycling. It might be a good weekend to stick to trails close to urban/metro areas. SORBA Chattanooga reports that the TVA has closed Raccoon Mountain.

11-11-2016 Take the Poll on Facebook! There is a fun poll on the Southeastern Cycling Facebook Page! How do you train in the winter?

2017 Calendar The very, very preliminary 2017 Race Calendar is up. Most of the dates I have so far are for mountain bike and gravel races. The labels are pretty clear as to what is a 2017 date (hint, look for the asterisk * or the word 2017). Road racing calendars typically don’t start coming out until late January or even late Feb. I get them up as soon as I have them. Of course, don’t even think about 2017 CX calendars until next summer; let’s get through this CX season first!

Foot Revolution Review Foot Revolution is a new sock subscription service aimed at cyclists and triathletes. Every month they send out a different pair of socks. One month the focus is more on fun with bright colors; the other month the socks are more performance oriented with calmer colors. Subscriptions are available in 1, 3, and 12 month blocks. You can skip a month or change sizes if you plan to gift them to a friend. Currently Foot Revolution partners with certain brands such as Base Cartel to bring a variety of socks to its subscribers.

The Foot Revolution packaging reveals this month’s socks.

I received the Foot Revolution package just a few days after it was sent. The socks were Base Cartel with cute hearts and stripes on them. I thought they might be more appropriate for Valentine’s Day than fall, but they are cute. I was told by Foot Revolution that the hearts are the Base Cartel logo. FR also sent out another color for November, which was a black and neon color scheme. The socks felt nice and soft right out of the package. I usually wear Defeet Aireators, and these socks reminded me of them although a little thicker. I wore them a couple of times. Unfortunately, even the size small was too big for my tiny feet, which caused slippage in my Sidi shoes. They were comfortable otherwise. They held up well through a few washings in cold water and tumble dry on low.

If you like different socks and enjoy a surprise each month, Foot Revolution would make a fun subscription for you. Who doesn’t like to receive packages with a surprise? (I love subscription boxes and have tried a few over the last couple of years when the budget has allowed.)

Foot Revolution provided a one month subscription to Southeastern Cycling to review the service at no cost. Check them out on Instagram!

10-22-2016 Dirty Sheets Info From Pete Edmonson: “The time will be changing soon and many of you will be looking to the gravel roads to fill you cycling time. This is the Dirty Sheets Loop Route as it leaves from the park. There has been an important update to the route!!!!! The South Fulton Parkway crossing has moved slightly. No longer go around the black gate, the crossing is in front of gate now. This location is better for cyclist and the local land owner. Volunteers have spent many hours cleaning out the culverts on Upper Wooten Road in the past month. Hopefully the road will not hold water this winter. We will be fixing wet spots as soon as we can find them after the next rain. Remember the land past the park gate on Upper Wooten Road is private, Stay on the road!”
