September 2019 News

9-26-2019 Cheaha Challenge TT News From the Cheaha Challenge: It’s YOU against the clock! Join us for the 2nd Annual Cheaha Challenge Time Trial on Saturday, May 16, held in conjunction with the weekend events of the 28th Annual Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo Century & ULTRA on Sunday, May 17. Experience the thrill of exiting a time trial podium down a ramp onto a closed 12-mile straight shot course (only three turns, all near the finish), and test what you’re made of as you barrel along the flat, fast, fun path. Our TT is a qualifier for the UCI World Time Trial Championship to be held in conjunction with the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship in September in Vancouver, Canada. However, our TT has multiple another option besides just the UCI qualifier – if you’re a resident of Alabama or Georgia, you can race for the AL/GA TT State Championsihp (Age group, Junior Division, or Handcyle). Age groups are determined by racer’s age on 12/31/20. UCI World Time Trial Championship qualifier – Finish top three of your age group or in the top 20%, and you’re going to Canada to race in September! (Note: UCI recognizes only age groups of 19 years old and above.)

Alabama & Georgia State TT Championships – If you’re a resident of either state, you can race to place in your respective state’s championship. Age Groups include ages 9 and up. Junior Divisions are ages 9-14 and ages 15-18. Junior Division fees are ½ the adult division fees. Besides Age Groups, we have two other AL/GA TT Championship Categories: 1. Eddy Merckx Division – Don’t have a TT bike or all the gear? No problem, this TT Division is for you. Merckx racers must be 19 or older, and will not qualify for the UCI World TT Championship but will be counted as AL/GA State Champions. In order to race as “Merckx” you may not use any of the following (even one will switch you to “Aero”): disc wheels, wheels deeper than 50MM, aero helmets, shoe covers, aero bars. Allowed items are: Aero road helmet (no teardrop shape, ears cannot be covered) and skinsuits. 2. Handcycle Division – H1-H5 Male & Female scored separately.

9-18-2019 ALL For One Century The ALL For One Century is a fund raiser for the Van Purser Foundation which was created by a group of cyclists to honor Van Purser who has been instrumental in creating much of the cycling culture in the greater Atlanta area. Van helped start the “Tucker”ride which continues today as one of the best attended weekly training and social rides inside the perimeter as well as the ride enthusiast for the Webb Bridge Ride which many consider the best weekly ride outside the perimeter. Van created the Domestique Leadership training program to help teach cyclists how to be safe ride leaders working to help make cycling safer for all involved. Unfortunately, Van was diagnosed with ALS and the disease has been progressing very quickly since his diagnosis two years ago. Outside of the cycling community Van Purser touched many lives throughout north Georgia and beyond. Devoted family man, spiritual counselor, and business leader, his impact is broadly and deeply felt. Van’s physical reach is now waning as he suffers the ravages of ALS. The Van Purser Foundation is a non-profit charitable corporation (501(c)3), created so that we might pour out into others just as Van has poured out into us. The mission, simply, is to pull together to assist other cyclists in times of need. The foundation is the only one of its kind created for the purpose of supporting cyclists and their families in time of need such as after an accident, fall or worse. Please help support this great cause by volunteering, donating or coming to enjoy the ride at: https://www.bikereg.com/all-for-one-100 and to find out more about this great cause please visit our site at: https://vanpurserfoundation.org/ and learn more about our mission and Van Purser.

The Atlanta Streets Alive: Southwest program will open 3.4 miles of streets to people on foot, bicycle, or other human-powered wheels by creating a car-free zone for the community to play, exercise, and socialize. This route was chosen through extensive community engagement, working with a steering committee of locals and residents.
