Southcon Live Show

Date: October 3, 1998

Where: Covington, GA

Wow! What a great day. This is going to be pretty short since I am so tired. I woke up at 6 am to drive to Southcon, hosted by Laura Behning in Covington, GA.

Performance was slow as usual to those of us that only show halter :) I could have slept til noon and been there in plenty of time. I was a bit disappointed to see that the CM Performance division was a bit light on entries, but the OF was a bit better filled, IMO. Several nice horses were named champion, including Stephanie Annee's Firewind (a famous Arab on the GA circuit) and Meighan Daly's Miss Parker, a Lisa Rivera Western Horse. Of Performance saw a lot of winning by Meighan D. and Elaine Sulser. I cannot recall any of their champs.

Halter was well filled. Most of the classes had 30+ horses. Laura was happy to see the largest Morgan classes at Southcon in years. She said that it was torture judging them! The most unusual names of the day have to go to two QH's---Stud Muffin and Unamed Fishead, although we were told that Fishead's name will be changing. Honestly, I was too busy running around with my horses to watch the halter classes. Some highlights I did catch: Lesli Kathman had some LOVELY Pour Horse Custom glazed horses that she did on a recent trip out there. I drooled over the pinto. From what Lesli said, she and Kristina found a way to produce pintos, so who knows if we will see that in the future from the Pour Horse. Foals did really well in halter, including some lovely H-R's. Oh those H-R's! They were out in droves this year at Southcon. I was afraid that someone was going to hit the china table and send thousands of dollars of chinas onto the floor. There were some lovely horses. Personally, I had my best Southcon ever. I re-qualified several horses for NAN and had other good placings in halter. Wade Hampton, a Small World SR CWP, won the OF Plastic Pony class, triple qualifying himself for NAN for 99-2000. One of my antique finds, a 70's dapple grey Shire mare, won 3rd of over 35 entries in the OF Plastic Draft class. For those of you who were at GEM live and remember Mojo, he didn't get double NAN qualified :( but watch out for MOJO at a NAN near you in 1999. The only HSO going....be afraid...be very afraid.

Prizes for the championships included painted resin horseheads done by Laura, which are going to be lovely.

Of course there was food at a southern live show! Laura's mother in law, Mrs. Behning, cooked a wonderful lunch for us including homemade baked beans and potato salad. I hadn't had a homecooked meal since I moved to Atlanta. A big crowd of us went out to eat Mexican afterwards. Mmmm....my poor stomach is aching after all of the good food today.

It was great getting to hang out with all of the Southeastern regulars, minus a few, and meeting some new faces (Heather...that means you ;) to put with email addresses.

BRAVO LAURA!! GREAT SHOW!!
