Big Greek Freeride Area CLOSED From RAMBO: "For the next 2-3 weeks the DH
area that is technically closed, will REALLY be closed 100%. They have gotten
plans from their engineers to build their ADA trail and connection to the
school. So equipment will be in there every day and signs are posted. Leave them
up.
The layout of the trails they are building do pretty much mess up the very lower
part of the DH runs and will cross back and forth (2 places) over what i call
the half pipe or gully. The city has asked us (RAMBO) to get the word out on the
forum and we will also post somethhing in the kiosk at the parking lot. There
are more details but i prefer not go into them here. I will say that when they
are finished, the rest of the open areas, including everything above the new
maintenance road and everything including the old DH run down towards the
bonecrusher will remain until we get a revised plan and have time, manpower and
of course approval from the city to proceed with freeride area trails. i will
bring a marked up map to next RAMBO mtg for all to see what the city is
building, how it effects trails and what possibilities will be for new runs. it
will require new layouts from what DVNT and SOFA did earlier on.
So the last "thing" that had to happen before we really knew what was going to
be done, will be over in 3 weeks. Then if any FR guys want to work with us to
plan the revival and re-newal of the area, the final planning part is about to
start. RAMBO will be building XC trail all year so as far as building, even if
we got a plan and got it approved, would not happen for at least another year.
Sooner if people specifically want to work on that area, during RAMBO or with
other approval.....we will make it happen.--Bob Grieco"

6-12-2006 TdG Economic
Impact ATLANTA, Ga. (June 8, 2006) – The impact of the Ford
Tour de Georgia continues to make a positive impression as a top-rated,
international sporting event and as a significant economic development success
for the state of Georgia. Having completed the fourth edition this spring, April
18-23, an independent study found that the event generated $26.2 million of
direct impact to the Georgia economy and host cities, compared to $26.6 million
in direct impact last year. Over half a million spectators watched the Ford Tour
de Georgia along its 606-mile route, and the study found that the average spend
per spectator at the event increased 17.5% from 2005.
“What makes the Ford Tour de Georgia so impressive is that the event has grown
by leaps and bounds in just four short years. In that time, we’ve been able to
provide over $121 million in direct economic impact to the state of Georgia and
its communities and become one of the highest ranked cycling events outside of
Europe. And we’ve been able to build a relationship with the Georgia Cancer
Coalition that has translated into millions of dollars of media value and
positive awareness, as well as has generated over $100,000 in funds for vital
cancer research. It is a true success story of a public-private partnership that
continues to build momentum,” said Chris Aronhalt, managing partner of Medalist
Sports, the sports agency licensed to operate the Tour, who has been involved
with the event since its start in 2003.
Five of the primary objectives of the Tour are to produce a world-class,
professional cycling event; showcase the beauty of the state of Georgia; provide
value and service for corporate sponsors; support the initiatives of the event
beneficiary, the Georgia Cancer Coalition and ultimately generate a positive
economic impact for the state and host communities. The Tour conducts an
intercept survey during the week of the event to garner statistics that qualify
its performance each year.
The economic impact for the state of Georgia and its host communities is based
on individuals who responded to the intercept survey at specific sites who
stated that they were present to watch the Tour and were from out of state. This
is important to note, as individuals who are Georgia residents could have
conceivably spent money in the state regardless of the Tour. Spending categories
included food and beverage, local transportation, retail, recreation, lodging.
The study found that lodging and food/beverage accounted for close to 55% of the
total direct impact numbers.
"As the Ford Tour de Georgia rolls through communities across the state, it's an
ideal opportunity to introduce spectators to the diversity of Georgia's tourism
assets," said Craig Lesser, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic
Development (GDEcD), the agency which serves as the marketing arm for the state.
"The Tour's positive economic impact on the state and the many communities it
touches is well-documented, and we look forward to helping it continue to grow
in 2007." GDEcD is responsible for developing tourism, which is Georgia’s second
largest industry behind agriculture.
One significant finding is that the average number of nights that visitors stay
in Georgia has increased each year and these visitors are spending more money
during their trips. In 2004 spectators spent an average of .92 nights visiting
the Tour and its “rolling festival” in Georgia; in 2006 that number has
increased to 2.78 nights for all spectators (in-state and out-of-state). On
average in 2005, out-of-state visitors stayed 3.87 days in Georgia and spent
about $186.75, per visitor per day. In 2006, out-of-state visitors stayed in
Georgia for almost the same average number of days (3.8), but the spending
increased to $441 per day. While international visitors/non-U.S. residents
accounted for only 4% of respondents in the study, they averaged 4.2 days in
Georgia with an average daily spend of $303 per day.
A total of 1,740 completed surveys were used for the final analysis from a
general cross-section of spectators at all 11 host cities in Georgia, and also
Chattanooga, Tenn. Both the North Georgia College and State University, in
Dahlonega, Ga. and Input Technologies, based in Alpharetta, Ga., assisted with
creating the survey and conducting the intercept interviews. The collected data
was then extracted and analyzed by Input Technologies, with assistance from the
Institute of Government at the University of Georgia in Athens. Crowd estimates
were determined with input from the Georgia State Patrol and local public safety
officials.
“When determining economic impact we do the assessment on a very conservative
basis. We do this by making sure that we only reflect funds circulated in
Georgia which would otherwise not have been spent in Georgia,” said Walter
Leicher, VP Business Development of Input Technologies and a cycling enthusiast
himself. “In 2005 it was estimated that $36.2 million was generated for the
Georgia economy from direct and indirect revenues. Using the same factor to
assess indirect revenues, we estimate that the total revenues, direct and
indirect, would range from $35.5 to $35.75 million this year.”
For 2006, there was an increase in foot traffic at the Live Healthy Georgia
Expo, with 88% of visitors stating that they had attended or planned to attend
the Expo and “rolling festival” activities; this is an increase of 10%-13% from
past years. Strong numbers were evident in other areas as well. The number of
credentialed media remained strong, 460 in 2006 versus 520 in 2005. There was
significantly more pre-event media coverage for the Ford Tour de Georgia this
year, including a 16.5% increase in exposure for the Georgia Cancer Coalition
related to the event and an increase in usage of the new logo treatment. The
event continued to attract 4,000 volunteers for the week from across the U.S.
“The Live Healthy Georgia Expo is our centerpiece during the event to spread the
message of cancer prevention, early detection, awareness and treatment. As a
partner with the Ford Tour de Georgia, we are very pleased to see that visitors
from across the state continue to be engaged by the variety of activities at
this event and that the event continues to strengthen in many areas,” said Bill
Todd, president and CEO of the Georgia Cancer Coalition. The Georgia Cancer
Coalition and the Georgia Department of Human Resources teamed up to bring the
Live Healthy Georgia Expo to the finish cities of the Tour.
The Ford Tour de Georgia has gained international stature this past year, having
been elevated as a 2. Hors Classe (2.HC) road cycling competition by the world’s
governing body of the sport, the Union Cycliste International (UCI). This makes
the Ford Tour de Georgia the only HC stage race in North America, and one of
four of the highest-ranked events outside Europe. In 2005, the Tour received
unprecedented recognition as the third best Stage Race in the world by a
Cyclingnews.com Reader Poll, and as one of the “Best Sports Event Series or
Circuit” for a professional event in a SportsTravel Magazine poll. The Tour was
also designated by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue as one of the Top 12 leading
economic development successes of 2005, the only sports property on the list.
The 2006 Ford Tour de Georgia was won by Floyd Landis, an American who is
captain of Phonak Hearing Systems (Switzerland) and a favorite for this year’s
Tour de France. Previous winners of the Tour have been Chris Horner (2003, Team
Saturn), Lance Armstrong (2004, US Postal Service Professional Cycling Team) and
Tom Danielson (2005, Discovery Channel Professional Cycling Team).

FREE Movie in the infield and under the stars
Stay after the races and watch the all time 1979 cycling classic "Breaking Away"
starring Dennis Quad, Daniel Stern and Paul Dooley. It's the movie that puts
humor to the words "REFUND". The story follows the cutters as they try to prove
to the college kids that they are real human beings, not outcasts to be looked
down upon. As one of the cutters is a champion bike rider, the climax of the
film and the contest to prove their worthiness, comes down to the Little 500
Bike Race. This is an annual bike race that is still held at IU and is one of
the seminal sporting events of the college year (the screenwriter Steve Tesich,
who won an oscar for his screenplay, actually won the Little 500). It is the
perfect ending for this remarkable and uplifting film.

Breaks Ins at Columns I've had a report of another break in at the Johnson's Ferry parking lot at Columns Dr. Be sure to leave any valuables out of sight, in your trunk, etc. I haven't heard of any breakins at either of the "Sope Creek" parking lots near the jogging trail off of Johnson's Ferry or I-285. Those parking lots may be another option.
6-23-2006 Go Girls! Go Steph and Val! Rock the crit this weekend. Woooo!!!
6-26-2006 Cartersville
Century This Saturday was the Catersville Century, benefiting the Boys and
Girls Clubs of Bartow County. Some highlights (some are repeats
from last year, but I want to make a point)
*Trigeeks...The idea is to ride your bike in a straight line. Not side to side
like Mr. Miagi said in the Karate Kid. Not in a semi-circular pattern. Not over
the line playing chicken with the oncoming car. Not into the rider next to you
forcing them into the grass. A straight line. A straight line looks like this:
--------, not like this _-_-_-__-.
*Trigeeks...Do not ride in your aerobars in the middle of the peloton. It's
stupid. If you lose control of your bike, you can take yourself and other riders
out. I don't feel like calling 911 when you break your collarbone. It's just too
dangerous.
*Trigeeks...If you do happen to be riding in a straight line, please keep riding in a straigh line.
Do not suddenly decide to turn left for no reason in front of the 5 people behind you.
*Club Riders...Do not bounce all over your bike like you are on a pogo stick. Work on smoothing
out your pedal stroke. Just watch DVDs of Lance! His butt stays in the saddle in between every pedal stroke;
it doesn't bounce out of the saddle with each upstoke. Also, when stopping, do not jam on your brakes and try to circle.
I was on your wheel, and you knocked me off the road. Cross skills, Baby!
*Volunteers at the rest stops...Thanks! Ya'll were so nice! Thanks to NARC, too.
The Barnsley Garden stop ROCKED! I loved the watermelon.
*Katie, Carol, and Tracy...You chicks rock as always! Thanks for not dropping me
too badly on the climbs.
*Elizabeth--WOW 17 mph for only your third week on the bike. RAWK IT!
*The Route...Great! Mostly low traffic roads with rolling hills. A few flat
sections made for fun hammerfests.
*The Hammer A Group Boys...Put the trigeeks in their place! My apologies to RBM
and Bigelow that the OTR boys decided to race instead.
*The Boys and Girls Clubs of Bartow County...Thanks for a great ride! Just one
request--can you have something other than hamburgers at the end? Pasta! :)
