October 2006 Archive

10-2-2006 Nashville CX  Nashville, TN – 1 October, 2006 – The 2006 Nashville Cyclo-Cross Series will begin on October 21 at Shelby Park in Nashville, TN. The four-race series will continue with races in Nashville at Two Rivers Park on November 4, Seven Oaks Park on November 5, and in Madison at Cedar Hill Park on December 9.

Cyclo-cross is an event characterized by the riding of a bicycle over a variety of terrain, consisting of pavement, grass, sand, gravel, dirt, and, occasionally, mud. In cyclo-cross races, riders must navigate over obstacles such as tree branches, steps, and temporarily-placed, artificial barriers during each event. Races are held on closed-circuit courses ranging in distance from 1.5 – 2.2 miles. Each race is between 30-60 minutes in length, and involves successive, repeated laps of the course.

The series beneficiary is House of Mercy, Inc., a house for homeless moms and their kids to live together during recovery. Series sponsors include: Bongo Java Coffee, Circle A Cycles, Clif Bar, De La Paz Coffee, Gran Fondo Cycles, Sean Letterman Photography, Lightning 100/ Team Green, NashvilleCyclist.com, Pacenti Cycle Design, Richmond Re-Cycles, L.H. Thomson Company, White Industries, and WickWear Sports.

All interested bicyclists are invited to attend. Each day will feature several races. Participants will be categorized according to their age, sex, and skill level. Awards will be provided to the top three athletes in each category; all racers 12-and-under will receive a small prize. More information can be found via the contact information listed below.

10-23-2006 Team Health Coach HealthCoach sponsors men's and women's team in 2007
Austin’s AG Cycling management group this week announced a new men’s squad, HealthCoach/ConexTrain Cycling, as well as a new women’s elite team, HealthCoach-travelgirl Cycling. HealthCoach, a wellness and lifestyle coaching and fitness management firm, has signed on as title sponsor for both teams through 2010.

The men's team, HealthCoach/ConexTrain Cycling, will be racing the 2007 National Racing Calendar (NRC) and other national criterium, road and time-trial events. For 2007, HealthCoach/ConexTrain Cycling’s men’s team has secured Dave Wenger, 2005 Texas Cup winner, and Phil Wikoff, 2006 Texas Cup winner and seventh-place finisher at the U.S. Cycling Federation’s (USCF) National Championship Men's Elite Race in Downers Grove, Ill. Negotiations are underway for the team’s third key rider.

According to Tim Pletcher, AG Cycling’s executive director, the men’s team and HealthCoach Cycling organisation will see significant program growth in 2008. "HealthCoach sees the cyclist’s lifestyle as a great example for its clients, so it’s stepped up the commitment for visibility through the sport," said Pletcher. "Amateur and professional cycling in the United States has seen consistent growth in terms of participation numbers and lifestyle popularity, despite highly visible issues on the European ProTour. Our teams and athletes will play a great role in outreach for the sport and sponsor." Pletcher noted that AG Cycling’s athletes will be held to the highest standards for conduct and sporting participation.

Also, the women's team ConexTrain and Atlanta-based travelgirl magazine women’s professional cycling teams consolidated last week, forming the new team, HealthCoach-travelgirl Cycling. The former squads bring together champion criterium riders and time trialists, two disciplines which will make up the 2007 team’s focus. ConexTrain leader Jen McRae and teammate Allyson Brandt will join forces with travelgirl’s Kim Sawyer, Leigh Valletti, Tiffany Ballew, and Kim Foland.

"I am very excited about the prospects for 2007 and the opportunity to bring the travelgirl squad into our camp," continued Pletcher. "We’ve put together a group of athletes who will strengthen our national presence, particularly at criterium and time trial events. Having travelgirl magazine on board also brings considerably more marketability for women’s pro cycling and this top-tier squad of athlete-role models."

Sawyer, who was also the travelgirl team manager, was also pleased. "I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. The AG Cycling folks have great depth of experience, access to top-tier resources and most importantly strive for a team culture we find very attractive. In looking for a partner for 2007, we were concerned about finding the right fit and were fortunate through a series of coincidences to connect with the riders and managers at Team ConexTrain," she said.

The new HeathCoach-travelgirl magazine team will debut in October at the AMLI Downtown Criterium, taking place in Austin. Additional sponsorships and a race and events calendar for both teams will be announced in the coming months.

Bike Fitting From Adventure Cycles: Everyone is invited to attend a Bike Fit Clinic at Adventure Cycles in Oakwood, GA on October 26 from 1-6 p.m. Local Physical Therapists and staff will be offering basic fitting measurements for your mountain and road bike. This is sponsored by Pro Therapy, Tugaloo Home Health, and Adventure Cycles. We hope to see you there.

Augusta Cross Bravo to Ross Douglas and crew for promoting a great cyclocross race today in Augusta! He even ordered some Belgian weather for us in the form of temperatures in the 50's and drizzle all morning. Waffle House and Coke provided nourishment for all of the racers as well as the cold weather essential--hot coffee. Sorry, not a single photo this week. It was wet, and my camera preferred to stay in its dry bag. I wasn't motivated to do anything but hang out today anyway.

Augusta CX Augusta Grand Prix Recap
The Augusta Grand Prix was the first race of the 2006 Georgia Cross Series to see a wet and muddy course. The rain started early in the morning and soaked the course before the first event began in pouring rain. The sandy course held the rain well and made for a great day of racing by all in attendance. The Augusta course got good reviews last year and the race attendance grew by over 20% this year. All the races were hard fought with the day being capped by a hard fought A race won by 2005 Series Champ Jed Schneider. Early in the race Jed dropped the hammer and showed that he was back and in charge while the rest of the field fought out the other placings. The race ended with 2 fantastic sprints for the line and a Tour De France like run of spectators from one part of the course over to the finish to see the sprints. The City of Augusta did a great job of hosting the event with Waffle House and Coca-Cola providing food and beverages for all in attendance. From all the racers, thank you Augusta for hosting the 2006 Georgia Cross Series.

Now, a poem..........

Good-Bye Sunlight

by Trish Albert

Good-Bye Sunlight
Oh! How we will miss thy warm rays

Good-Bye Bellyache
How we will miss the suffering thou dost inflict

Good-bye Short Sleeves
Off to the depths of the closet with you!

Good-bye Lactic Acid
How it burns within the quads

Good-Bye Warmth
Until we meet again in the spring

Hello Darkness
Bring out the artificial beams

Hello Cold
Thou dost torture us with thy bite

Hello Trainer
The boredom, the monotony of thee on dark winter nights

Hell Gortex Booties
Protect the feet from cold rain and wind

Good-Bye Friends
See you when the sun shines again

Ride Times Change Just a reminder that most group rides will be ending this week. See the ATL Rides page for some information on "winter" rides. Also, most group rides switch to their winter times on Sat., Nov. 4th including Tucker, Webb Bridge, Beyond Six Flags, etc. As always, ask the ride leader, sponsoring shop, etc. about your favorite rides.

Roswell Winter Ride From Bike Roswell: As the time changes this weekend the Roswell Sunday Ride begins. It is the same route as the Thursday night ride but more subtle in tempo. Two loops gets you 50 miles and 3200 ft of climbing. I have many out of towners requesting directions to our Sunday ride so expect new people to meet and share the ride. Ride leaves from City Hall at 9AM on SUNDAY for 20, 25, 40 or 50 mile options. It is winter training time get an early start on base miles and the pre Turkey workouts! Join us on Sunday. The ride is leaderless and participation is voluntary. You don't ride of you don't show up. I know John Knop will be there this Sunday.

10-26-2006 Trish's note: They are still searching for a new title sponsor. BLAIRSVILLE, Ga., October 26, 2006 – United Community Banks, Inc. (NASDAQ: UCBI) has signed on as a two-year major sponsor of America’s premier cycling event, the Tour de Georgia. The bank’s Founding Partner sponsorship includes ownership of the “King of the Mountain” presentation jersey and rights to consumer promotions across the Southeast.

The 2007 Tour de Georgia will be held the third week in April and will again travel through Union County, the home of $6.5 billion-asset United Community Banks, and numerous other counties where the bank has a presence. Event organizer Medalist Sports, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), will announce the Host Cities, route and dates in early November.

Tour de Georgia benefits the Georgia Cancer Coalition, a not-for-profit dedicated to reducing cancer deaths by accelerating prevention, early detection, treatment and research. Since 2003, Tour de Georgia has raised more than $125,000 and boosted public awareness for the Coalition.

“Our customers and communities strongly support Tour de Georgia and the mission of the Georgia Cancer Coalition,” said Jimmy Tallent, president and chief executive officer of United Community Banks. “We’ll be there to welcome and cheer on the cyclists when they ride through our communities across the state.”

Professional cyclists will compete for the United Community Banks King of the Mountain (KOM) jersey by collecting points at designated KOM locations, including the summit of Brasstown Bald Mountain. The rider with the most accumulated KOM points is awarded this jersey. United Community Banks will give spectators oversized cardboard “hands” for their use in encouraging cyclists along the challenging mountain roads.

In addition, United Community Banks will soon unveil a custom Tour de Georgia check series and debit card for fans of the Tour.

“We’ve had wonderful support from all the communities the Tour has touched, and it’s thanks to them and sponsors like United Community Bank that the Tour de Georgia has grown each year and was able to add an extra day to the schedule in 2007,” said Craig Lesser, commissioner of GDEcD. “The bank’s sponsorship and the Tour have a great synergy that will create a new dimension to the event’s economic impact in the state.”

GDEcD has been a Presenting Partner since the inaugural Tour de Georgia in 2003. The agency communicates the state’s economic and tourism assets to Tour attendees, and works closely with Tour staff to align with business partners for sponsorship and hospitality.

“United Community Banks is an ideal example of a Georgia community leader that embraces the Tour de Georgia and becomes a true corporate partner,” said Chris Aronhalt, managing partner of Tyrone, Ga.-based Medalist Sports. “We will announce 2007 event details soon and begin activation right away with great partners like United Community Banks and the Georgia Department of Economic Development.”

Last year’s Tour de Georgia began in Augusta with 120 athletes on 15 teams representing 22 countries. These world-class cyclists raced over 600 miles throughout the north Georgia mountains and finished in Alpharetta. The event attracted more than 500,000 spectators and had a $26.2 million direct economic impact on Georgia.
