Saul to do first race! From dailypeloton.com  Saul Raisin - First Race in Utah
Saul Raisin Pro Cyclist to Continue Miracle Comeback at Porcupine Hill Climb in Salt Lake City, Utah On July 7, 2007 Saul Raisin Will Ride His First Post-Accident Race On April 4, 2006 during a European stage race, pro-cyclist Saul Raisin suffered a devastating crash that put him into a coma and on the verge of death. The prognosis was so bleak that Saul's parents were discussing organ donation with his doctors by the time their son woke up. As he gradually regained consciousness Saul's parents were rocked by another revelation. During emergency surgery a portion of his brain had been removed leaving his left side paralyzed for life.

Throughout his recovery Saul was unwilling to accept such a prognosis, and his determination has made all the difference. The story of his fight to regain full functionality is the stuff of legends, but it doesn't stop there. Saul dreamed of returning to pro cycling and winning the sport's most prestigious race, the Tour de France. Saul recently passed a major milestone on that journey when he cleared medical controls and regained his racing license. The next step is to participate in an actual race. He chose the Porcupine Hill Climb for his debut race because his fianc頬ives in Salt Lake City. Saul will marry Aleeza Zabriskie in Hawaii this December.

The Porcupine Hill Climb, which starts in front of the Porcupine Pub and Grille (3698 Fort Union Blvd., Salt Lake City, Utah) and finishes at the base of Brighton Ski Resort will be held on Saturday, July 7. Spectators can watch the race at any point along the course up Big Cottonwood Canyon. Citizen racers take the start line at 7 AM. Elite level racers, including Saul, will take off at 8 AM. Coincidentally, at the exact same moment in London many of Saul's teammates and friends will be powering through the streets of London in the prologue to the 2007 Tour de France. He intends to join them in 2008.

White, GA Warning! From Tom Hanks: "Cyclists, WARNING!! If you are riding your bicycle, at the brewery and are any where near White, GA (White is close to the brewery and on the BBR route)you have to stop at all the stop signs, or it'll cost you $103 and a possible mark on your auto insurance.

A few weeks ago the White police gave some of my tri geek friends warnings, now they are ticketing. I was there and I saw cyclists being ticketed today. The White police are laying in wait. (I'm not being paranoid, I know they're out to get us)

To add insult to injury, these poor folks who were ticketed weren't regulars, there were on a training ride for the MS 150 Charity ride in Sept.....Hanks

7-17-2007 Accident Insurance Please read the following from John Johnson:
TO: Open Letter to all Riders

From: John Johnson – Head USA Cycling Official GA/AL

Subject: Accident Insurance

This weekend we had an accident. A rider left the road during the descent in Rome. He crashed down the mountain hitting trees and rocks. The system worked like it was supposed to. A rider stopped to provide immediate aid and make sure the official (me) was flagged down. We had police on the scene in less than five minutes and ambulance and emergency unit in about 10. The emergency personnel did a good job evaluating the rider and getting him secured on a back board with the appropriate neck braces and splints. It took six of us to manhandle him back up the mountain to the road. The ambulance transported him to the bottom of the mountain where they met the life flight helicopter. From the time of the accident to the time the rider was flying to Chattanooga was less than 30 minutes. He will stay several days in the hospital. Fortunately it appears he will be ok. It was my decision to call the ambulance and the emergency personnel decision to transport by Life Flight. The rider was in no condition to discuss alternative treatment options. I have no idea what this weekend will cost him. If I was guessing it was not cheap.

NEWS FLASH!!! Bicycle racing is an inherently dangerous sport. Unfortunately, if you are on your bicycle be it racing or training, on the road or in the woods, there is a very high probability you will eventually crash. Often times through no fault of your own other times because you mess up. Several years ago I got knocked down on a group ride on the silver comet trail. We were not going hard nor fast. Folks were not riding aggressively and no cars were involved. I still ended up with a broken pelvis and tweaked shoulder.

So, it is not if you are going to crash it is when you are going to crash. Most crashes are a little bit of road rash and soreness and maybe some parts for your bike. All too often some of them can involve an ambulance ride, a helicopter ride, and days in the hospital.

The reason I am writing this is to say, as much as I like bicycle riders and appreciate the people in the sport, if you are riding without accident insurance you are an IDIOT. I know this sounds harsh but in my opinion it is a fact. For all the issues we have with USA Cycling, they have done a good thing by partnering with a third party insurance company to provide low cost pretty good accident insurance. See the attached link

http://adventureadvocates.com/usacycling.html

For less than $25 per month you can protect yourself from the costs associated with any accidental injury, from bike racing to falling off your roof. That is a lot less than a set of racing wheels.

The insurance provided by USA Cycling for the race is designed for catastrophic events and primarily to protect the promoters, sponsors and venue. It does provide some accident insurance but with very high deductibles. Fortunately there is a reasonable cost alternative.

So if you do not have insurance Please, Please, Please, look into getting this or some other insurance. They also have comprehensive health insurance but at the very least get the accident insurance.

Rides Page Update I have updated the Rides page with some rides out of Epic Bikes in McDonough, and a while back I added the Outspokin rides from Canton.

After my yearly OBGYN (for the guys, this is the "girl doctor" that women hate going to every year) and a routine pap test in May and more tests last week, I have Stage 3 CIN, which is precancerous. Thankfully, we caught it, and I will have surgery towards the end of August to get rid of the abnormal cells.  Ladies, please see your OBGYN yearly to get a pap test. Guys, get an appointment with your family doctor. I cannot stress taking care of your health above everything. If you don't have your health, you cannot ride, take care of your family, work, or live life!

Bike/Pedestrian Accident? Does anyone have any details about a bike/pedestrian accident on Simpson St. in NW Atlanta yesterday? The rider looked to be riding a "nice" road bike, but the news stated he wasn't wearing a helmet.
