Gone Riding Races USAC Sanctioned Press Release: Gone Riding race promotions has announced that its four cross-country mountain bike series, which consist of 32 events across the southeast, will again sanction with USA Cycling in 2016. The South Eastern Regional Mountain Bike Championship Series, Georgia State Mountain Bike Championship Series, Florida State Mountain Bike Championship Series, and South Florida Coconut Cup Mountain Bike Series offer ample off-road racing opportunities to cycling enthusiasts across the southeast. Now, as USA Cycling-sanctioned events, these 32 races will also offer riders the added benefits of being included in the nation’s only bike racing results and rankings program, as well as accident medical insurance for incidents that may occur during an athlete’s involvement in the sanctioned event.

“Gone Riding has a long history with USA Cycling that goes back to the early 1990’s,” said Gone Riding President and Race Director David Berger. “Due to positive changes at USA Cycling, we’re happy to announce that for no additional cost, we’ll once again provide our racers with the benefits of USA Cycling.” Some of USA Cycling’s goals in 2016 are to lower the barriers of entry to the sport of cycling, and to increase its support of amateur and grassroots racing. For mountain bike races, this means a $5 rebate on one-day licenses to the race director, the elimination of permitting fees, and the elimination of one-day licenses for practice days.

1-25-2016 ALL CALENDARS ARE UPDATED!! All calendars have been updated with the 2016 race information as of 1-24-2016. Please see the individual links at the top under “Races” for the current calendars. You can also see them all here on the 2016 Page. I update the calendars approximately once every 4 weeks. If the race is not listed, I don’t have a date or information for it. As always, PLEASE, PLEASE contact the promoters if you have a question about their race. What does that include? Race times, prize questions, directions to the race, anything you could think of about that specific race. PROMOTERS: Please contact me if you want your race listed! There is never any charge to have your race listed on the calendars. Send me any press releases you may have, too! They made be edited for length and clarity.

As this time I do not maintain a calendar for centuries, charity rides, fun rides, BRAG, or tours. I simply don’t have the time (Volunteers? Bueller? Bueller?). I offer a one time mention for a press release in the News Section of Southeastern Cycling. I recommend sending those to me 6-8 weeks before the ride date. I reserve the right to refuse to publish any press release or material sent to me.

1-24-2016 Tour of the Southern Highlands Cycling Stage Racing Returns to Georgia with the 2016 Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands GAINESVILLE, Georgia (January 20, 2016) – After an eight-year absence, cycling stage racing will make its return to Georgia in March with the launch of the Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands. The event is the first stage race in the state since the Tour de Georgia ended its run in 2008. Formerly known as the Gainesville Gran Prix, the 2016 Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is transitioning to a pro/am stage race in this its fifth year of operation. The March 4-6 race is centered in the mountains of northeast Georgia. Race weekend will feature four events for the pros and three events for the amateur competitors.

Friday, Friday, FRIDAY! It all begins on Friday, March 4, with exciting street sprints in downtown Gainesville. These “drag races on bicycles” are part of the “S’More to Life” family fun night and include competition for the pros and the kids. A s’mores and hot chocolate bar will be at the center of the the kidzone action off the drag strip and event sponsors will also be on hand with prize drawings and more. These fun family activities will make downtown Gainesville the place to be on Friday night! On Saturday, March 5, the amateurs will join the action along with the pros for a time trial and a circuit race. Then, an epic road race with over 7,000 feet of climbing concludes the racing on Sunday, March 6.

The event is already attracting attention from many top racing teams. The three-day event has even been circled on the calendar of the U.S. Junior National Team as a team selection race. “We are very excited to reintroduce stage racing to Georgia. In addition, as a USA Cycling Junior National Selection Race, the 2016 Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is the only race east of the Rockies offering juniors an opportunity to demonstrate their ability while bringing national attention to the our sponsors and this beautiful region”, said Nathan O’Neill, race co-director. The Mission Source Tour of the Southern Highlands is also seeking volunteers and host housing during the race week to accommodate the numerous riders, coaches and support staff that will flood the region. Just as the local community extends a warm welcome to the race participants through volunteering and by opening their homes, visiting teams are encouraged to give back to the Gainesville community by scheduling one or more school visits during their stay to provide the local school children with a great interactive experience. Those interested in volunteering our hosting visiting athletes should contact Co-Race Director Betty Hodges at 512-844-6383. Registration is open.

Cheaha Challenge Press Release: 24rd Annual Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo Century & ULTRA ride: Sunday, May 15, 2016 What the heck is a Gran Fondo? Basically, it’s a huge party after a grueling bike ride. There are three essentials for a good fondo – great ride, great food, great beverages. We have those and more. The Northeast Alabama Bicycle Association is hosting riders from all over the USA to compete in the “Toughest Ride in the South.” As if the original century course was not challenging enough, ride organizers added an ULTRA to the event, 124 miles/200K. The ULTRA encompasses all the major climbs in the area totaling more than 12,835 feet of climbing. The Challenge offers distance options of 24, 44, 62, 84, and 100 miles, plus the ULTRA, with 7 Rest Stops on the course. The Challenge is part of the Alabama Backroads Century Series. If riders are not quite up for the challenge of the Challenge, they can opt to do the Chief Ladiga Cruise family ride, a kinder, gentler ride on the paved rails-to-trail, Chief Ladiga Trail. The Cruise has distance options of 12, 24, and 50. Event venue: Pete Mathews Coliseum, Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, AL. Time: Challenge/ULTRA start at 7:30 a.m.,  Chief Ladiga Cruise starts at 8 a.m., Benefits:  Coldwater Mountain Bike Trail, Chief Ladiga Trail, Area High School Mountain Bike Teams

Freeze Thaw and Trails From SORBA Atlanta “It’s that time of year again night time temperatures drop below freezing and afternoon temperatures get warm and melt the frozen trails. This year Freeze Thaw has been amplified by all the precipitation last month. Indeed, December was the wettest in a century, coming within a quarter of an inch of breaking the 1911 record. Much of that moisture is still in the ground and will lead us to close the trails longer than usual.Nothing tears up a trail tread more than riding in Freeze Thaw. In the afternoon, all the trapped moisture in the tread thaws out and turns into mud. Riding on this surface leads to rutting which then traps rain and exacerbates the problem. You must have a tread that will easily shed water if it is to remain sustainable.’ Read the full article.

1-8-2016 Lupus Racing Team Press Release: The Lupus Racing Team has named former professional cyclist Phil Cortes as its Sports Director for the 2016 professional cycling season. The team will focus on premier road race events across North America, as well as select UCI-sanctioned stage races. Steve Carpenter will return in 2016 as the Assistant Sports Director, focusing on domestic races. The second-year UCI Continental men’s cycling team will compete under a new logo that will be incorporated in the redesign of all team kits, apparel and support vehicles. “I am excited to lead the team for a full season this year. We have tremendous support from our corporate and industry partners. And we continue to develop an aggressive strategy to support our mission to generate awareness for the proper diagnosis and treatment of the autoimmune disease of lupus,” said Cortes.

Managed by Cycle Culture Inc. in Atlanta, the Lupus Racing Team will continue its partnership with the Georgia Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America. Borrowing the colors of purple and green used to promote awareness for lupus, the new logo was developed with the help of returning team rider, Evan Murphy of New York. “We aimed at giving the team a long-term image that is clean, and distinctive. We are not just athletes working together as a professional cycling team, but we are also ambassadors working together to generate awareness to cure a disease,” said Murphy, who studied at Rhode Island School of Design. The complete redesign of the team gear and apparel will be unveiled at a team presentation event on Feb. 5. Peachtree Bikes in Atlanta will host the event, which will be open for the public to meet riders and management personnel.

The roster and race schedule for the Lupus Racing Team will be announced later this month. Team management announced the signing of 31-year-old Slovenian sprinter Jure Kocjan in December. The 13-year veteran won a stage at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and wore the race leader’s jersey for one day. “We are excited about formally introducing the Team to our sponsors and fans in a few weeks. We’ll be aggressive in many ways. It’s the backbone and DNA of what I want our team to be – aggressive, hard working, strategic. Having someone in the breakaway every day is a dream situation, both in terms of race tactics and for sponsor visibility. We will have a lot to talk about this season with Jure as the Team leader and a great mix of U.S. and international riders,” added Cortes.  Twitter: @LupusRacingTeam, Facebook: LupusRacingTeam

1-7-2016 Cyclocross National Champion Masters 30-34 Men Congratulation to Chattanooga resident Spencer Whittier (Privateer) for his win in the Master Men 30-34 at the National Cyclocross Championships! It was a great race to watch! At the end of the first lap, Spencer’s toe spikes got caught on something on the first barrier. He fell (see photo) and took about 15 seconds to get back up. On the third lap he put in a huge effort to take the lead. After that, he didn’t look back! Congratulations!!

1-6-2016 New Georgia Bicycle Law Firm From the Daily Report: “After 24 years solo, Decatur personal injury lawyer Bruce Hagen has formed a new firm, Hagen Rosskopf & Earle, with Ken Rosskopf, who focuses exclusively on bicycle wreck cases, and Hagen’s senior associate, Myrlin Earle. “Ken is the bike law guru for Georgia. He’s opened my eyes to that world,” said Hagen, who’s been subletting space to Rosskopf in his building, the Marble House, for about a decade. Over the years, they started collaborating on cases. Hagen said cyclists who have been hit by vehicles need zealous advocates. The general public, he said, likes “the idea of cycling, but we hate that they’re on the road. Every driver hates bicyclists.” So do juries, he added. “When we do jury selection, there is open anger and hostility against cyclists. I don’t know if it’s because jurors think they’re blocking the road or resent their freedom—as a group, riders bother people.” “They can’t wait for the opportunity to say cyclists don’t deserve the same protections as anybody else.” Trish’s Note: I am so excited for Ken and Bruce! They have given their expertise to cyclists for over a decade now! Congratulations!

Free Flite Bicycles Thanks to Dan and Brian for helping me find a sweet Kuat hitch rack this summer! Free Flite has 3 locations. If you need a bike fit, see Michele; he’s amazing and has fit a ton of my friends! He’s been doing bike fits longer than almost anyone else in the area!
Cycle Therapy If you are north of Atlanta or in the Rome area, these guys can’t be beat for customer service! They host quite a few clinics throughout the year to keep locals up to date on the latest bicycling technology.
-Parks Law Have a need for an attorney and want one that understands cyclists? Clay Parks represents clients in most civil and criminal matters. Clay also races for the Litespeed-BMW team.
-Bike Rides Thank you to all pf the bike rides and races that have advertised with Southeastern Cycling this year! I’m glad to help get the word out about your events!
