Volunteers Needed for Pro Race From the DLV: We need a few good volunteers to help out with our Pro Race Series event The Omnium on July 9th. Racers, you can still help us out, and earn rider of the year points by appointing a stand in to work for you. We need help with set-up, gate control, merchandise, bike valet and tear down. All shifts must be at least 3 hours and must be signed up for. We need to count on folks, so while we love the help at tear down, no ROY points for spontaneous sense of good will. Just adoring praise. But, helping us set up before and tear down after could be considered a shift. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. It’s what makes these races happen! Email Rob@dicklanevelodrome.com if you would like to help!

6-23-2016 Prima Tappa News Press Release: Prima Tappa Athletic Club reorganizes, appoints new board, updates non-profit status Oakwood, GA – A new board of directors met in the board room of the King’s Hawaiian company to define a new vision for the future of Prima Tappa Athletic Club, Inc (PTAC). Prima Tappa (Italian for “first stage”) began in 2013 as a regional cycling specific club that partners with bike shops and is sponsored by local businesses like its main sponsor Mansfield Oil Company. But in the past two years, Prima Tappa has grown to be much more. The board members ratified new by-laws and cast a vision to create events and programs that first and foremost promote healthy living through cycling. As they see it, cycling is a lifelong hobby that can change lives and change statistics, specifically the high rate of obesity in Georgia especially among our children. Prima Tappa Athletic Club, Inc. had two main programs this year, an Elite team program consisting of a 15 member men’s road race team, a 9 member women’s road race team as well as a middle school/high school mountain bike racing program for students who want to compete in the Georgia Interscholastic Cycling League (GICL). These programs operate under some pretty simple mandates; have fun, promote the healthy lifestyle of cycling and be good sports.

Board member James Himstedt said, “Our focus going forward will be to advocate for cycling as the new golf. With a bike, you can train to race and ride for fun with the family. People need to get out and feel alive! Our elite teams are made up of good people who work for a living but enjoy cycling as a sport. Our student teams competing in GICL are learning a lifelong sport that they can continue after high school. That’s what we want to promote.” The new 5 member board of directors are James Himstedt, Owner Strong Rock Camp in Cleveland, GA, Chad Hayes, Controller Hayes Automotive, Sean Philyaw, Owner Eurotruck Importers, Tim Evans, VP Economic Development Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce and Dan Raatjes, VP of Operations King’s Hawaiian. All are cyclists and family men with children. They are quick to point out, however, that the success of the club is all due to the hard work and support of their families, program directors like Dillon Swaim, Dan Podrasky, Jeremy Spafard, Alex Fuentes, Loren Morgan and assistant coaches Mike Stabler, Jeff Branyon, Loren Funk, Eddie Montero, Paul Schmidt, Alex Harrod, Lisa Hayes and the many club members who contribute daily to the club vision. “We created this new charitable 501c3 non-profit so they can have confidence in supporting and promoting the club’s programs and events,” said Chad Hayes who is also the head coach for the mountain bike program, “Opportunities were flying at us, but we decided to back up and create a solid foundation to grow from before taking advantage of the exciting things in our future.” So what’s in that future? Dan Raatjes says, “There are opportunities to promote races at some really cool venues, expand our middle and high school mountain bike program, provide scholarships, create awareness in the community of bike path development and provide greater support to our elite teams. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!” But Prima Tappa does need more leaders willing to help make events and programs possible so they are asking anyone with a heart for cycling to reach out and see how you can get involved. “Help us make a difference in family’s lives!” Dan said.

6-20-2016 Update on Trish I usually leave news of my own racing to my personal Facebook page or to tell tall tales to my Sorella teammates. I can’t leave out the GA, AL, and TN State Track Championships that were hosted this weekend at the Dick Lane Velodrome. Mike Barman & the East Point Track Club did a fantastic job with the races! I had to call an end to my mountain bike season in May when my back refused to heal from the latest round of injuries. It’s been a 15 year saga with my back-at times it’s better than others. Road riding does not bother it, but sometimes it’s too much to mountain bike hard. I do it all to help my back-chiro, great non-surgical back MD, massage, etc. At the encouraging of some friends, I decided to start racing at the track again. I last raced at the DLV around 2006. I’ve always enjoyed going down to watch and take photos but hadn’t put much thought into racing until a few weeks ago–well, about 5 weeks ago. I now have a new track bike (the Dolan in the photo), an amazing coach (Cheryl Fuller-Muller), and am making a serious run at the Masters National Track Championships. Thanks to everyone that have helped me get my track equipment together quickly–Tom at Smyrna Bicycles and Todd at Reality Bikes and to my fellow DLV trackies for their invaluable advice on gearing, aero helmets, and how to race/strategy/advice.

I had a great State Championships. I was sick the entire week leading up to it and didn’t really ride. Much to everyone’s shock, including my own, I was 2nd in Friday Night’s 200 meter flying Time Trial. I was also 3rd in the Women’s Scratch race. Kim Fuller (EPTC) and I were second in the Women’s Team Sprint. Saturday brought high winds (I hate wind) & me feeling sick again. My legs were sluggish. Kim F. got the best of me in the Women’s Sprint, and I took 4th. I set PRs in the 1.5 lap TT and 9 lap IP. I sat out the Points race to save my energy for the Keirin, in which I was third. I think I love the Keirin! High speed behind the derny and only 1.5 laps of hard effort! I can’t wait for the Omnium Pro Race July 9-10! Don’t worry, I will be back in the dirt for CX including my yearly clinic in conjunction with Georgia Cross and Sorella. Look for a date announcement around the first of August. I’m still on the GACX Board of Directors as well! I’m hoping to carry some track speed into CX season…

Fools Gold Mountain Bike Races From MGA After several months of planning and scouting, we are excited to announce that the 2016 Fool’s Gold Mountain Bike Races will have a new Start/Finish location! We are pleased to be partnering with Anderson Creek Retreat in Ellijay, GA to host the event. Anderson Creek Retreat is a 1,200 acre mountain community next to the Chattahoochee National Forest near the historic mountain towns of Blue Ridge, Ellijay and Dahlonega.
One of our primary reasons for the move was to provide you with the option to camp at the race venue. Due to limited space, you MUST RESERVE YOUR SPOT by emailing lisa@mountaingoatadventures.com no later than Sept. 1st. Please include the type of camping unit…RV, Sprinter, Tent or Sleeping in car/SUV, so we can ensure we have room for you. While the new venue is situated between Ellijay and Dahlonega, the cost of lodging in Ellijay is more affordable than fall rates in Dahlonega and there are most of the same amenities (Lodging, Cartecay Bike Shop, Numerous Restaurants, Wal-Mart and Home Depot) within a 20 minute drive of the venue. Course Improvements – Now 60 and 90 mile courses! Same Fast and Flowy Bull and Jake Mountain Singletrack. As far as the course, all of the fast Bull and Jake Mountain singletrack that you know and love will remain the same and will continue to be ridden in the same direction that you are used to. We knew you’d like to hear that. The 90 mile course will complete two 30 mile laps of the Bull and Jake Singletrack and then head back the same way as the 60 mile riders for a course that includes approximately 60 miles of trail and 30 miles of gravel or paved road. The reduced course distance, while still providing a very challenging course, will also help keep finish times down so that most riders can finish within the time cut-offs.

Double Down Challenge From the Promoter:  Have you ever wanted to feel like a race car driver? The Double Down Challenge race day in Kershaw, SC provides that opportunity with two different courses during the day. Some racers will have the opportunity to get their fill of the closed course with four races throughout the day. Taking place at the Carolina Motorsports Park, this event provides all the experiences of race car drivers to the participants. Onsite concessions, restrooms and showering facilities are available to everyone, open air garages can be rented, and camping is an option as well for those wanting to make a weekend of it. Registration closes June 24th.

6-6-2016 Coach Profiles Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting some coach profiles. They will all be available on the Coaches Profile page.  All of these coaches live in the Southeast and enjoy working with local athletes. First up is Christian Parrett, a former pro road racer.

1.    What is your cycling background, and how did you get started in coaching? I spent almost a decade racing and traveling the world, starting in my late teens.  I’ve been a US National Team member and a pro on a few teams, including two years with 5-Hour Energy/Kenda.  Although none of my accomplishments on the bike have been truly exceptional, I’ve been lucky to compete against big names in the sport and learn from very accomplished coaches, directors and teammates. I began coaching when, after giving advice on training and racing to many of my friends, a good friend of mine offered to pay me to coach him rather than hire someone else.  He was a former triathlete coming back from having his leg brutally shattered by a car.  We successfully got him from Cat 5 to Cat 2 in half a season, and I became convinced coaching was something I could enjoy and be successful at. From that moment I began coaching a small number of riders to supplement my racing income.  That was about 5 years ago.  Around one year ago a good friend and former teammate asked me to take over his coaching company, Kinetic Potential Coaching.  He’d become too busy with his new business to continue coaching, and trusted me to manage his athletes and the training camps he ran as well.  I took over running the business, and now handle all KPC Athletes plus the training camps and cycling vacations we do several times a year.

2.    What type of cyclists do you specialize in coaching in? With my deepest experience being in road racing, that is what I tend to gravitate towards in my coaching.  I have a pretty wide range of experience in road racing and can handle crit junkies or TT specialists equally well.  I also have a background in MTB and cyclocross racing so I’m perfectly happy to work with those riders as well.  I’ve also had a lot of success with non-racers who focus on a few centuries or gran fondos during the year.  I do find, however, those type of riders need a lot of internal motivation to stick to a training program without the constant feedback of racing.

3.    What kinds of training plans do you offer? At KPC we have three tiers of training programs, all based on the athlete’s needs.  One thing you will find in our training program is that none of them have limits on emails, phone call duration, schedule changes, or any form of contact with the coach.  This is because we believe writing a good training plan is only a small part of being a good coach.  Being able to change the athlete’s schedule when they have a wrench thrown in their plans, being able to give tactical advice, or just being a friend and providing emotional support are important parts of being a coach.

Christian Parrett used to race for the Kenda-5 Hour Energy Team. Photo courtesy of Christian.

4.    How do you motivate athletes? This is entirely dependent on the athlete.  The same rant I might give one of my riders could get me fired by another.  It’s up to me to identify the personality of who I’m working with.  Some thrive off of positive reinforcement, others need a bit tougher approach.
6.    What are your pricing plans? I offer three levels of coaching programs that cost $160, $200, and $250/month.  Here () on our website we offer a chart that compares all three of the plans on offer.
7.    Do you limit on number of athletes that you coach? I don’t have a particular number of clients in my head that I would limit things too, but I would choose to limit taking on new athletes if I reached a point where I couldn’t give all of my riders the time they deserved.
8.    How does someone contact you if they are interested in coaching services? I can be most easily reached at cparrett89@gmail.com, or 478-250-6305.  You can also learn more at http://www.kineticpotentialcoaching.com.

6-5-2016 2016 CCA Regional Road Race Championships For the 3rd year, C4 will be the host of the Carolinas Cycling Association Regional Road Race Championships. This years event will be held on the tried and tested course we all know well in Wade, NC. There will be one day of category based races and one day of age based racing. Of course we will have a some non-championship racing as well. Online registration is available at USA Cycling and will be extended until noon on Friday.  On-site registration is available on race day at the Wade Fire Department 7136 Powell Street, Wade, NC. Volunteers Needed. Volunteers can register for the Better than Able Coaching CCA Regional Road Race Championships presented by Cross Creek Cycling Club and Hawley’s Bicycle World. If you’ve never volunteered at a road race before, no worries. We got you covered. Below are some instructions on the areas of volunteers needed. We need 2 types of volunteers. First is the course marshals. These are volunteers that are there for traffic control. Second is the drivers for wheel trucks and pace cars. While this has a lot of responsibility, it is also pretty fun as you get to see all of the racing action during the race. Please click those links to find the information to either register, or review the responsibilities.

6-4-2016 Healthy Newton Omnium After a two year hiatus the Healthy Newton Omnium is back on June 11th and 12th!  It is one of the few traditional Time Trial, Criterium, and Road Race Omnium weekends in Georgia.  All races take place in Newton County, GA where you can see 200 year old mansions and farm houses.  The criterium will take place near historic downtown Covington, and the road race will go through the beautiful rural roads of Newton County.  All proceeds from the race go to benefit Newton Trails.  All races are USAC sanctioned with numerous categories to accommodate all levels of racers.  Pre-registration is required to participate in the omnium.

The Jackson Brevet’s motivation is to raise as much money as possible, that will be donated to THE KELLY WILHITE APLASTIC ANEMIA RESEARCH FUND at Emory University.  $0.90 of every dollar donated goes DIRECTLY to clinical research; an unprecedented amount.  Ninety-five percent of all patients are kids 15 yrs old and younger.  Our Ride Director Chris Ouimet and his bride Leigh lost their 9-yr old daughter in 2014.  Olivia Rae’s memory lives on thru the Brevet every day and every year in June.
