Road to Unbound for Lauren DeCrescenzo Begins at Border Wars

Lauren De Crescenzo hits the reset button in a big way this weekend to begin a fourth season dedicated to gravel. She’s raced for 13 years, most recently with a multiple-discipline programme with Cinch Rise, but the 2021 Unbound Gravel 200 champion now proudly declares herself as a professional gravel cyclist with ‘a side of road’.
De Crescenzo left Cinch over the winter to pursue a solo privateer career. It’s not unfamiliar territory for the 33-year-old, who excels in time trials and hits the gas for solo efforts in just about any type of race.

The 3rd Annual SPIN FOR SPECIAL OPS (SFSO) charity ride will be on Saturday, May 25, 2024. SFSO volunteers look forward to hosting cyclists for a great day on the bike with post-ride lunch and festivities. The event will start at 8:15 am at 100 Busch Drive, NE (the Budweiser Plant) in Cartersville, GA. There will be 30, 63 and 100 mile options with SAG, mechanical support, rest stops, and T-shirts. Participants can also buy raffle tickets for a chance to win a Wahoo ELMNT ROAM bike computer and Wahoo POWRLINK pedals. Proceeds from the event will benefit the 501c3 nonprofit “Operation One Voice” (O1V). O1V supports the needs of critically wounded or fallen Special Operations Forces and their families. Carrollton GreenBelt Off Road MTB Trails Grand Opening

Come join us for the grand opening of Carrollton’s new GreenBelt Offroad Mountain Bike Trails. Sat., March 2 11 am-3 pm Situated in East Carrollton and Lakeshore Parks are nearly three miles of professionally built mtb trails with berms and curves and rolling hills. Try out the pump track in the woods at Castle Playground. Or ride the Downhill area at Lakeshore park behind Barry Carroll field- here you will encounter 4 downhill paths made for railing around the corners and catching air on the jumps. There are also a couple of long sections of cross country trail that can be ridden in conjunction with sections of the Carrollton GreenBelt to create a multi-mile ride for all skill levels. You will need to bring your own bike and a helmet. Riders under 16 should have a parent attend with them. We will have a cook out, a jump jam and group rides with leaders to show you around the new trails!!

Last Call for Maxxis Tires Southern Cross Bike Race – March 2, 2024 – Registration Closes February 26th! 50 Spots Remain! Time is running out to register for the 2024 Maxxis Tires Southern Cross Bike Race and the event is almost full! The course is 50 miles with a bit over 6,000 ft of elevation gain (two major climbs), and consists of pavement, gravel roads and a short (but hard) grass section at the end of the race up to the finish line. The course is gravel bike or mountain bike friendly, so pick your poison! Riders will pass by an aid station twice during the ride, and be treated to Terrapin Beer and Moe’s Burritos for a hearty post-race meal. 30 Mile Junior Course Avallable! We have a shorter 30 mile option for Junior riders with categories for 10-14 and 15-18 male and female riders. 30 mile Juniors will ride the infamous “Winding Stair Loop” and are allowed to have a non-participant adult accompany them for safety, but are not allowed to draft or have the adult carry any of their food or water.

Barry Collier Memorial Ride

PRESS RELEASE:Cycling Community to Honor Fallen Cyclist Barry Collier with Ghost Bike Placement and Tribute Ride Stonecrest, GA – The local cycling community mourns the tragic loss of Barry Collier, who was fatally injured in a hit-and-run accident while on a Thanksgiving Day ride. In remembrance of Barry, a dedicated Ghost Bike placement and Tribute Ride, themed “Barry’s Final Ride,” are scheduled for February 10th, 2024, to honor his memory and complete the ride he could not finish. The events will commence at 9:00 AM in the Miller Grove Missionary Baptist Church parking lot located at 3800 Miles E. Fowler Way, Stonecrest, GA 30038. Participants will gather for a brief staging process, where they will get a safety briefing, sign a QR code waiver, and receive a BC sticker to be placed on the left rear side of their helmets. The ride will start promptly at 10:00 AM, covering a 1.1-mile journey to the Memorial Site across from 3721 Crossvale Road, where the formal Ghost Bike placement activities will begin at 10:20 AM. Following the placement ceremony, a 10-mile Tribute Ride will trace Barry’s intended route at a pace of 12-15 mph. This ride seeks to pay tribute to Barry, as well as, raise awareness for the perils cyclists face daily. The route can be reviewed at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45176368.
All activities are expected to conclude by 1:00 PM. The procession will be escorted from the Church to the Memorial Site, along the route and back by the DeKalb County Police and Fire Rescue Services to ensure the safety of all participants. Spring Rolling! Pecan Shaker and Opelika Okey Dokey Deets!

Pecan Shaker celebrates the timeless tradition of pecan shaking. Except this time, you’re the pecan tree and the shaker is miles of gravel roads. In 2024 we are moving this ride to the spring, so it’s more like Pecan Blossom, than shaker. Either way, you’ll Speed past pecan groves and through fish hatcheries, private timberlands, watermelon, sunflower and peanut fields and over a wide variety of surface conditions. Similar to the terrain on our Bird Dog 100 course, you’ll encounter Georgia red clay, red dirt, white kaolin, loam, dust over crust, and of course….the loose stuff! This is one of our favorite courses and it definitely shows! We’ll have you covered with multiple aid stations at various intervals and flushing toilets with a smorgasbord of tasty treats and real food as well as our favorite; pickle-back shots! We’re keeping the Carver’s Store in the courses this year as that proved to be a hit with both riders and with the store owners. Everyone loved it, especially the milkshakes, burgers, BLT’s and everything else you all ate!
Say Hello to The Opelika Okey Dokey! Our newest event in the Gravel Roll world is the Opelika Okey Dokey (say Ohkee-Dohkee). Opelika means “Big Swamp” in the Creek language, and you’ll ride past dozens of creeks and over bridges seemingly lost to time and space. But don’t worry, there’s none of the loose stuff here, just hard red dirt interspersed with a sprinkling of gravel across miles and miles of twisting and rolling terrain. You’ll ride through endless timberland and spooky hollows and be rewarded with occasional views of the Fall Line as it stretches across the landscape. Look closely and you may even discover another Appalachiosaurus hiding in plain sight in the road berms. If you are looking to put some finishing touches on your Unbound training this is the perfect course. While Unbound will lack the curving roads, the short and recurring undulations of the Okey Dokey mimic much of what you will experience at Unbound.

Cobb County Breaks Ground on Final Section of Bob Callan Trail

“CUMBERLAND — With shovels in hand and dirt flying through the air, local leaders broke ground on the fourth and final phase of the Bob Callan Trail on Monday.
The ceremony was hosted by the Cumberland Community Improvement District and saw representatives from the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Cobb County Government.
The $7.4 million expansion project is expected to be completed in January 2025, and will wrap up over 20 years of trail planning and construction. Read the full article.

Big Creek Greenway Closure

Closure Alert! The Roswell section of the Big Creek Greenway will be under renovation beginning on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024. This Bond-funded improvement project will be completed in two phases. Phase I will involve the closure of bike paths and is expected to be completed by late spring 2024.

Are you ready to get shreddy? The course includes most of the trails at Blankets Creek in a counter – clockwise direction for a total distance of 15 miles per lap. Each lap has 1400’+ of elevation gain, so this will be a challenging course. The categories for 2024 are age based, so that all riders can choose between the 15 mile course (1 lap) and 30 mile course (2 laps). Junior categories available in both race distances. Rope Mill Fast+Furious 15 Mile Mountain Bike Race presented by Northside Hospital – Cherokee – May 25, 2024 at Rope Mill Park in Woodstock, GA!
Make plans to join us for our newest event! This Fast+Furious 15 course features nearly all the trails at Rope Mill Park and will begin along the concrete path to allow riders to space out before entering the singletrack portion of the course. Riders will turn right at the bridge and complete Moore’s Pass, Power House, Raceway and Turbine all in a clockwise direction. These trails are farily wide and allow for passing. Riders will then return across the bridge and complete Explorer Loops 1, 2, and 3 counter-clockwise. The course returns to the start/finish via singletrack trail that links Explorer to the parking lot, crosses the parking lot, then heads onto the Avalanche Trail where riders will proceed counter-clockwise on the Avalanche Trail Loops 1, 2, and 3 and then head back to the start/finish to complete the course.
The categories for 2024 are age based and the same as we are using for the Blankets Creek Dirty 15 Mile Race.
