8-27-2021 All for One 100 From the Van Purser Foundation The Van Purser Foundation All For One 100 is Saturday, October 2, 2021 We are excited for this years All For One 100 Ride and we are counting on you joining us again! The Van Purser Foundation is a non-profit charitable corporation (501(c)3), created by a group of caring cyclists, so that we might pour out into others just as Van has poured out into us. Our mission, simply, is to pull together to assist other cyclists in times of need. 100% of the proceeds of this event go towards helping fellow cyclists in our area who are in need of assistance. A lot of the needs that we meet are financial assistance following a cycling related incident. We are honored as a foundation to have helped many cyclists in the last couple of years with a multitude of needs. Registration is open! Trish’s Note: There are distances of 32, 64, and 100 miles.

8-24-2021 ATL Airport District Gears Up for First Spin the District Races in Hapeville & College Park Criterium races start off the initial Spin weekend ATLANTA (August 23, 2021) – ATL Airport District kicks off its third annual Spin the District cycling series in Hapeville and College Park, providing an immersive experience for cyclists and spectators alike and transforming the area’s streets into a premier cycling destination. Following last year’s cancelation due to COVID-19, Spin the District is returning in full swing this year – offering food, entertainment and festivities for all to enjoy. The first events include the Hapeville Crit on Saturday, August 28, followed by the College Park Crit on Sunday, August 29. This year’s roster of cyclists boasts riders from 19 different states and 11 countries from across the world. “After this past year, we’re excited to bring Spin the District back to the ATL Airport District this fall in a safe, fun and inclusive environment,” said Cookie Smoak, President of the ATL Airport District. “We’re looking forward to bringing our communities together to welcome the best riders in the country to our corner of the world. This year, we’re coming back as part of USA CRITS Speed Week Finals, further showcasing the District as a premier cycling destination.”
Kicking-off this eventful weekend, spectators and cyclists alike are invited to the “HandleBar Crawl” at Beer Girl from 6 – 9 p.m. Guests will indulge in beer, slushies, food, music, and Spin the District merchandise. To receive a coveted wristband, guests need to say the secret word which is “CRIT”. If a spectator rides to the event on their bike they will receive a free Spin the District cowbell. The races begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Spin the District launches during USA CRITS Speed Week Finals with the Hapeville Crit – a fast-paced, 1.4-kilometer route in the heart of the city. Hapeville’s course will feature the first and fastest cycling adventure for participants – including a seven-corner course and 150-meter straight finish. To end the day, spectators can watch the crowd favorite kid’s tricycle race and the best pro men and women racers from across the country. Friends, family and cycling enthusiasts can gather for a Saturday Block Party at the parking lot across the street from Hapeville First Baptist Church to commemorate the weekend with frothy drinks, food and festivities throughout the afternoon.
Wrapping up the initial Spin weekend and USA CRITS Speed Week, the College Park CRITS will last from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with an artist market scheduled from noon to close. The College Park course will feature a five-corner circuit, tight turns and an uphill finish, all located in the historic streets of downtown College Park. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., spectators are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, tents and sunscreen – and can indulge in local food trucks throughout the afternoon, alongside family-friendly games and kid’s races. 8-17-2021 Atlanta Resident Wins SBT Gravel From Cyclingnews: “Lauren De Crescenzo (Cinch Cycling) took a solo victory at the SBT GRVL race in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. on Sunday. De Crescenzo crossed the line alone taking the win in just under seven hours ahead of US road champion Lauren Stephens (TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank) in second place, Flavia Oliveira (Abus Pro Cycling) in third, and Crystal Anthony (Liv Racing) in fourth, all crossing the line separately. The SBT GRVL route was 144 miles and included roughly 9,400 feet of climbing more than 100 miles of gravel sectors, making it one of the more challenging gravel races on the calendar.” Read the entire article.
Tucker Ride – Roads Closed From the Tucker Day organizers “We are hosting Tucker Day this year on Saturday, 9/4. I’m wanting to let the cyclist who ride from Main St in Tucker on Saturday mornings about the roads being closed to bikes and cars from 6am-7pm.” So, the roads near Tucker High School will be closed on Sept. 4. You may want to plan an alternate route and/or starting location on that date.

In addition, participation favorites will return which include the Sparc Twilight 5k run and the Specialty Paint and Body Gambler, a 50 or 100K bike ride through Athens-Clarke and Oglethorpe County plus the opportunity to be in the Southern Sol VIP area on the finish line.
Athens Clarke County passes revamped open container ordinance The new pilot ordinance passed August 10th allows for open containers of beer and wine within a Festival Zone provided attendees have an approved wristband and utilize an identifiable container provided by the event. For the Twilight this area will encompass Washington Street from Pulaski Street to Lumpkin Avenue and Hull Street from Washington Street to Hancock Avenue. “We are excited to be a part of this new program and hope to make this a positive working solution for all downtown events” says Ashley Travieso, event director of The Athens Orthopedic Clinic Twilight. The introduction of Festival Zones will allow for sales of beverages not only from the event but will also allow for sales from bars and restaurants within this area. The Festival Zones are building to building where the previous ordinance only allowed for fenced areas in a curb to curb placement. “It has been a long time coming to fruition, but I really appreciate the commissioners’ efforts to learn about and implement this change,” said event founder Gene Dixon. “as the first event in this pilot program, we hope everyone will work together help make it a safe and enjoyable event for all involved.” The event will also feature a VaxNation Zone on Hancock with an area reserved for vaccinated fans and space to be socially distant.

Between COVID, my own health problems, and general lack of desire to be around a lot of people during the pandemic I’ve only had it out a few times. Dirty Duathlon From Mountain Goat Adventures Rope Mill Dirty Duathlon and 3.3 Mile Trail Run presented by Northside Hospital – Cherokee – November 13, 2021 at Rope Mill Park in Woodstock, GA! Join us for our SORBA Woodstock Season Finale at Rope Mill Park! This is everyone’s favorite event where you can race as a solo or on a team. Pair up with your spouse or kids! The opening bike loop will be 5.5 miles on the Mill Trails, followed by a 3.3 mile trail run on Explorer, and finally a 5.5 mile bike on the Avalanche Trails. Solo, 2 and 3 person team categories are available in the duathlon. We will be using traditional mountain bike race categories, as we have done in the past, to help alleviate congestion on the opening bike loop. The run is short enough that those who do not typically run still have plenty of time to start training! All participants receive a super comfy t-shirt and those that register by October 13th also receive a commemorative coffee mug. Prizes and awards presented to the top 3 in each duathlon category. Post race snacks and water available. We are also offering a separate 3.3 mile trail run on the Explorer Trails at this event for those who would prefer to just participate in a run.

Build Party #7 Chattahoochee Bend From MTB Atlanta Join us for Build Party #6 at Chattahoochee Bend State Park! Saturday, Aug. 14 9:00 am. MTB Atlanta is building the new “Campground Loop”, a 3.5 mile beginner trail. This trail is Phase One of what will be 15-20 mile four loop system at the park. Come help us do finishing work on the new trail build. Have a mask, gloves, wear long pants and closed toed shoes and bring a pack, water, snacks, bug spray and your epi pen if you are allergic to bees. We will bring extra water, drinks and snacks. Tools and stoke provided!
Build Party #5- Canongate Nature Preserve From MTB Atlanta Join us to do trail work on our brand new trail build at the newly established Cannongate Nature Preserve in Coweta County with the Southeastern Trust for Parks and Land. Saturday, Aug. 14 9 am We will be doing finishing work on the new tread and general trash clean up around the Park. We are also looking for a few volunteers in Coweta or South Fulton to help put in a rail fence and clear some scrub around the parking area at Canongate Nature Park. The trails are pretty much done but need some dry weather to get the last steps finished. Once we get the parking area straight we can open. Refreshments will be enjoyed at Cochran Mill Brewery afterwards.
8-4-2021 Southeast Adaptive Mountain Bike Tour Catalyst Sports has partnered with a number of our SORBA chapters to create the Southeast Adaptive Mountain Bike Tour. This tour will run from September 11th to November 14th 2021, with a new location every weekend. Each of the 9 stops will have a weekend filled with aMTB rides lead by Catalyst Sports staff and local volunteers. The tour sets out to give people with disabilities the chance to go mountain biking as well as showing everyone that people with disabilities are people with ability! They will be at Blanket’s Creek Sept. 18-19 olunteers Needed! At each location volunteers will be required to assist with the rides. “Volunteers will be riding along side our athletes assisting with creating a fun and safe environment. Therefore, we do ask that the volunteer to have experience mountain biking. Also, Catalyst is unable to provide standard mountain bikes so each volunteer will need to bring their own bike.” There will be a mandatory training on the evening of Thursday or Friday prior to the event at each location.

People decided to not renew, ride their bikes, retire, move on – it has put the *REGION* in a very tight spot. Pulling officials from Atlanta to Savannah (or beyond) to work grass roots races is not practical. I am asking not only for Georgia, but Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Alabama – if you know somebody that might be interested in officiating, have them contact me! Fools Gold News From Mountain Goat Aventures We are down to 85 spots remaining in the 2021 Fool’s Gold Bike Race – Register by 8/15 to beat the late registration price increase. The 2021 Maxxis Tires Fools Gold will be held on September 11, 2021 at the beautiful Montaluce Winery, in Dahlonega, GA. The Fool’s Gold Mountain Bike Races will again offer riders a 38 mile or 60 mile course. Primitive camping is available at Montaluce Winery for Friday and Saturday nights. 10 spots will be held back for “Donation Entries” for those who would like to make a donation to CTHA or NE GA SORBA. (You pay the regular race registration fee + a $100 donation to one of our trail groups). Please reach out directly if you would like one of those spots. Both courses begin at Montaluce Winery and will have approximately 3 miles on pavement, then transition to gravel roads. The 60 mile course begins with a stout 3 mile gravel road climb and takes riders to some great “backcountry style” trails and lesser known roads. The 38 mile course heads directly to the Jones Creek Ridge Singletrack Trail along gravel roads, giving riders the opportunity to space out before hitting nearly 30 miles of fast singletrack. 7-23-2021 Youth Cycling League at the DLV From the DLV It’s back! The long-awaited start of Youth Cycling League 2021 is this Monday, July 26. We will have YCL every Monday and Thursday from 5:30-6:30 for beginners and 6:30-7:30 for intermediate riders through October 14th. As in years past, we will provide bikes, helmets, water, and lots of fun, but you can also bring your own helmet and water bottle from home. We recommend all riders wear athletic clothing and sneakers with short laces. Other frequently asked questions are answered on the DLV website. Please bring a signed waiver on the first day.
