2-20-2019 Good News about Lost Mountain Trails! From SORBA West Georgia’s Facebook Group “I (sic) received a call from Cobb Commissioner Mike Boyce and he told me that Mountain Biking will be allowed to stay at Lost Mountain. There will be signs put up to share the trail and that we may have to make it directional. He was going into a meeting with Commissioner Keli Gambrill to discuss. He stated that groups that put this much effort into the caring and improving of trails will not lose access. He appreciated all the kind and supportive emails of the trails and the county employees.”

2-19-2019 Cobb County MTB Trails Need Your Help! From IMBA SORBA West Georgia “Friends we need your help again. Many of you already know that there has been some discourse about mountain bike use at Cobb County trails recently, specifically at Allatoona Creek and Lost Mountain Parks. Our access may be threatened at these parks. Unfortunately, we bikers get a bad rap as a user group and the public is not aware of all the volunteer hours that go into maintaining our trails. Your chapter is working hard to raise awareness but we need your help. Please take a second to email your District 1 Commissioner’s office at Keli.gambrill@cobbcounty.org and let them know how important the trails are to you and how important we are to the trails. Keep it positive and and to the point. We also need to have another positive showing at the next parks planning meeting on March 4th. More details will follow.”

Trish’s Note: If you are in Cobb County, cc your elected official and Commissioner Mike Boyce mike.boyce@cobbcounty.org. Find them here.

2-15-2019 Six Gap The rumor has been going around Facebook on Wednesday that the Six Gap Ride is dead. Nope. From a Facebook Post: “Rumors are swirling from this weeks article about the Chamber & Visitor’s Bureau in the Dahlonega Nugget. Direct comment from the Six Gap Ride Director, Rebecca Jackson: Six Gap is NOT, I repeat NOT ending for this year or even in 2020. We are re-evaluating how the Chamber as a whole is run and Six Gap is a massive part of our funding and it makes a huge economic impact on our community. There is a lot more to the story and a lot more to be determined. As a responsible organization we have to take a look all angles of our business and how it is being run. We will have some challenges with trying to run 6 Gap with just 3 staff members but that is something we will have to look at in the coming years. Again, this does not effect this year’s event. We are still fully staffed through 2019 and plan on hosting a top notch event this year as always.”

St. Paddy O Pedal From the Promoter: “We are excited to announce that Registration for the 2019 St Paddy O’Pedal Ride to Conquer Childhood Cancer is open. Let’s not forget about the fun after ride party, where all cyclists will now be returning at approximately the same time to enjoy free beer and food with improved distribution, music and an awesome raffle. To top it off, the funds raised will target pediatric cancer research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, a truly great cause!

1-21-2019 Cobb County Trail Marker Program Cobb County has extended it’s trail marker program to the Silver Comet. It is already present on several other trails including the Noonday Trail System. If you have an emergency, give the 911 dispatcher the number off the nearest trail marker, which will allow first responders to find you more easily.

Silver Comet Robbery Jeffrey Smith posted this on Facebook. It has been verified. I come from a family of law enforcement officers. I can’t stress enough that if you come up on a situation that doesn’t look right, FOLLOW YOUR SPIDEY SENSES and get the heck out of there! You can always find another way back to your car. YOUR SAFETY comes first! This happened around Anderson Mill Road, which is at mile 5 just before the Dogwood Golf Course.

“As some of you may have heard I was robbed at gun point yesterday evening on while trying to get in a quick bike ride at the end of the day on the Silver Comet Trail (just west of Anderson Mill Rd). I am fine but sadden that something I enjoy so much has been tainted. So the two young men (~18) had moved a large tree limb and parts over the trail and sat on the path waiting for a victim. When I got to their location the sun was already setting so I wanted to keep moving as quickly as possible. I and asked them if they had done this and they said no. I got off my bike to clear the path. I removed the largest tree branch and when I looked up they had flanked me and both held guns on me. They asked for my wallet but in a lycra outfit I don’t much more than a phone and happy thoughts. They became more aggressive and agitated. I threw out my phone. They picked it up and ran off into the woods. I was able to call my wife and track the phone but they discarded it. We called the police, filled out reports and went back to look for the phone but could not find because the battery had gone dead or been turned off. The good news is I am alive and unharmed and what a great gift that is for my birthday today. Thanks to those who let a strange man use your phone and thanks to CCPD for the fantastic job.”

1-10-2019 Pisgah Stage Race Press Release Brevard, NC – January 7, 2019 – 5 days, 140 miles and 20,000 feet of elevation gain. The 11th Annual Pisgah Stage Race, hosted in Pisgah National Forest April 8-13, 2019, is revered as the best and highest quality stage race in the world with consistent, gnarly singletrack on the docket every day. Pisgah has earned a growing reputation for having some of the best trails in the country featuring rhododendron tunnels, picturesque creek crossings, incredible leaf colors, and rooty, rocky singletrack. Get a sneak peek here.

Blue Ridge Adventures (BRA) is well-known for putting together premier endurance events including road rides, stage races and mountain biking races, and BRA rolls out the red carpet for the internationally attended Pisgah Stage Race. The week’s events include 5 days of racing, a recovery zone with snacks and recovery drinks at the race finish, Leaders’ Awards Ceremony and happy hour each evening with adult beverages, farm-to-table catered dinner six nights, continental breakfast and a closing ceremony celebration party. BRA even offers new on-site housing at the Brevard Music Center and full-on travel packages from the Asheville Airport for those interested in an all-inclusive epic mountain bike week. As a leader in the trail building world,Todd Branham’s creation of the Pisgah Stage Race course is always a thing of beauty. This year’s race features three new courses that travel through 76% singletrack, 19% dirt and only 5% asphalt riding. The course includes the East’s most rugged trails, including a daily enduro section, two of which will be new in 2019.

1-8-2019 TN Women’s BAR Series! Tennessee Women’s Cycling Project is thrilled to share that the Tennessee Bicycle Racing Association created a women’s masters BAR series!

What does that mean? Women, who are 40+, can now choose to race in masters road races, TTs, and crits! Masters women will now have a “red jersey” competition! Women’s masters races will now count toward team competition points! And best of all, we get to race against our age-group peers! For the P/1/2/3 ladies, this is a chance to race less distance in road races and less time in crits. Hopefully, this will allow more women to continue racing into their 40s, when we might not be able to train for the longer distances for a variety of reasons. Not necessarily slower races, but shorter! Hopefully this will also bring some women back to the sport who had left, especially those who left to compete in other sports that offer age-group divisions. Last year’s Empower Her series was a lot of fun, and we very much thank the promoters, who gave women’s masters racing a shot! You are the reason we now have a BAR series!! Three River Rumble, Oak Ridge Velo Classic, Cedar Hill Criterium, High Roller Crit, Cookeville Criterium, and Rockabilly Gran Prix Jackson TN, Promoters will have the option to provide a women’s masters race at their events, so be sure to check flyers at tbra.org.

Charleston Park Closed From RAMBO: Unfortunately Charleston Park is going to have to stay closed for a while. The bridges are under water and in one case… Well completely gone. We are working with Forsyth County to get things back open but we have to fix the one bridge and wait for the lake levels to go down. We also do not have a full understanding of how many down tree there are.

I expect this to change by the beginning of Feb. Spin the District in GA appears it will retain its Sept. dates and not move to the spring.
