2-21-2017 Southside Park Grant From SORBA Atlanta: We’ve received a $70,000 Legacy Grant from Park Pride to fund the expansion of a network of natural surface multi-use trails, including a bridge spanning Poole Creek and its surrounding wetlands. Park Pride and members of the local mountain bike community recognize that professionally-designed natural surface trails promote public health and well-being through activities such as bicycling, hiking and running. At 211 acres, Southside is the third-largest park in the City of Atlanta and also one of the least-familiar parks to its residents. Brett Davidson, President, SORBA Atlanta: “This project builds upon the 1.25-mile Evergreen Trail we completed in 2016 and is another step forward in our plans for a trail network at Southside Park totalling almost 7 miles.” “We’re so excited to be able to support the expansion of this project with a Park Pride Legacy Grant, supported by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation,” said Allison Barnett, Park Pride’s Associate Director. “Our hope is that these new trails will help transform Southside Park into a destination park for the City’s broader constituents, particularly those on Atlanta’s south side.

The announcement of the grant coincided with the kick-off of SORBA Atlanta’s first capital campaign, designed to raise an additional $21,000 for this project. Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) has pledged $8,000, and Atlanta Cycling has offered to match all individual donations up to the first $3,000 raised through SORBA Atlanta’s web site.

Pro Cycling Returns to Anniston in April for 15th Season Press Release A blend of cycling, eats, treats and tunes return April 8-9 for the annual spring street party in Anniston, the Noble Street Festival and Sunny King Criterium. The weekend will feature two days of amateur and professional bicycle racing, called the Alabama Cycling Classic. The 15th annual Sunny King Criterium will be held alongside the Noble Street Festival on Saturday, and the McClellan Road Race will be held on Sunday. This is the only professional cycling event in Alabama that is part of USA Cycling’s Professional Road Tour.

“The Sunny King Criterium is know nationwide as the ‘king of all crits’, for the incredible southern hospitality and huge community support. The addition of a second day of racing and designation as a Pro Road Tour weekend has helped attract the best male and female athletes for top-level racing. This event continues as the ‘king’, thanks to the support from longtime sponsors Sunny King Automotive, and services from the City of Anniston and Calhoun County,” added Marilyn Cullinane, who returns as race director for a fourth year. Her event management company, Start Smart Cycling, operates both races for the Alabama Cycling Classic. The Alabama Cycling Classic kicks off April 8 with 21 categorized races for a variety of age groups and skill levels, from a one-lap youth contest (ages 3-8) to one-hour races for professional women and men. Host Housing for Tour of the Southern Highlands From Tour of the Southern Highlands: Host an athlete or team. Standing behind the fences and at the sidelines, most spectators come within an arm’s length of the racers at the Tour of the Southern Highlands. Host families, who house the racers and the team support personnel, get even closer. While the level of interaction varies from house to house (some hosts prepare dinner for the riders, others simply offer up their spare room), the riders and the host families always enjoy some quality time together. Many of the host families even come to think of their guests as “their” racers. Host housing helps because it brings more racers to our event. You will be asked to provide: A comfortable place to sleep – bed or airbed, Bathroom and shower, Use of the kitchen and storage for food, Use of the washer and dryer, A safe place to store the racer(s)’ bikes It’s especially convenient for racers to be housed near their teammates and team support staff.  If you have any neighbors that might be interested in this wonderful experience, please encourage them to contact us as well. Fools Gold 60 Mile MTB Race – September 16, 2017 We are excited to announce that registration for the 2017 Maxxis Tires Fools Gold 60 Mile Mountain Bike Race is now open. The Maxxis Tires Fools Gold is scheduled for September 16, 2017 at the beautiful Anderson Creek Retreat, in Ellijay, GA. We received great positive feedback in 2016 about Anderson Creek Retreat and we are looking forward to building upon that momentum and continuing to raise the bar on this event. The 2017 Maxxis Tires Fool’s Gold will offer only a 60 Mile option. The decision to drop the 90 mile course was made after seeing a steady drop in numbers so that we could allocate those resources to making the 60 mile event better, as historically the shorter course has comprised over 75% of event participants. Those who normally race the longer distance will still be challenged by our 60 mile course, and you will arrive at the beer and fajitas several hours sooner! 400 rider field limit for 60 mile race.

12-26-2016 Small Calendar Updates I made a few small updates to the 2017 Race Calendar. Last week I was in contact with Stuart Lamp, the regional USAC rep. (Stuart is great if you ever need anything or have questions about USAC!!) He said that GBRA is working to nail down a few dates before releasing the full calendar. I already have a some dates up. I know & have confirmed that the East Atlanta/Litespeed-BMW crit is not returning. Grant Park will be coming back. Twilight and Roswell have moved back to their regular race weekend where they should be. TBRA should have their calendars ready in a couple of weeks. Alabama’s races are updated with the known dates. I expect NC/SC to have their race calendar ready in Feb. They are usually a bit behind the rest of them because of the extensive calendar. I updated mtb races last week. A lot of the smaller promoters–mostly mtb and gravel–have not made updates to their race websites. I check about every other week for those. If you know of any dates, please email me at sttarlite at hotmail.com or use the contact page.
